  • Bom dia pessoas. In this video I walk around Lisbon Portugal encountering people from different countries and walks of life. I ask them what they think about Lisbon and about Portugal, and about travel and life in general. I also visit. the oldest bookshop in the world. I talk to a Brazilian expat and a retired veteran who was forced to fight in Portugal's colonial wars.
    Lastly, I had an unplanned encounter with a digital nomad friend, Matt whom I met in Budapest 2 years ago, just before the pandemicc happened. It was nostalgic but also inspiring to see him again and to reflect on these past two crazy years. I hope you enjoy the video, and remember to subscribe and hit the notification bell!
    Obrigado,
    Ross

      Yes, I agree. I love his videos. He actually gets involved with the people, he asks questions, he finds interesting people and they share their views and experiences, and that is the most interesting thing about a place. Of course Portugal is beautiful. I was born there. 💖 💚💛❤

    I have just discovered your channel. Am on many travel UTube sites and yours now is the very best! I love that it is SO personal and that it is the people you are most interested in. Thank you for all you are sharing. I hope one day you come to Mexico; we are moving there permanently within the next year after spending over 40 years traveling all over Mexico, Central America, and South America. We live in Bend, Oregon. I absolutely LOVE what you are doing and how you create these very creative and personal interactions wherever you go. I am impressed with your language skills. I only speak Spanish. I hope your channel grows exponentially. It SO deserves it!!!

    Fado was created by a student in Coimbra University on the 18th century! It does not go back centuries! If it did, Portugal would have never become a global empire because Fado would just make everyone depressed!

    "Bom dia! " It's not Brazilian, neither it is "Bom dia pessoal!" ... There's no such thing as Brazilian language, only Portuguese language! In Portugal this sentences are used on daily basis.
    Last time i checked "Good morning!" Or "Good morning people!/everyone!" Is still English language, not Australian, Canadian, South African, (...) , or American (USA) language. I find it really funny when foreigners say they can speak a certain language, but in the end they can't even comprehend the basics... An accent don't make a language different.

    I am Portuguese and the Fado does not mean fate or destiny, the word actually comes from Arabic حدو (ḥadû), which means [caravan] chant. Fado was sung by Muslims and Cripto-Muslims (New Christians still practising Islam) in the old Moorish Quarter (Mouraria) of Lisboa, the Fado was only outed into the streets after the end of the Inquisition in 1821. I think it is important to refer that Amália Rodrigues went all over the world on tour as part of Salazar propaganda to whitewash the regime in the 1940s and 1950s, she was one more victim of the regime, the same happened when Salazar invited reputable international photographers to take pictures from Portugal and spread all over the world.

      Is there proof Fado came specifically from Mouraria and the muslims? I always thought no one quite knew for sure (and Mouraria part, I'd never heard it before now)..

    • @paulocastrogarrido3499
      @paulocastrogarrido3499 6 месяцев назад

      @@jeanjacqueslundi3502 the History of the fado is carefully hidden by the Portuguese elites, they will tell you as little as possible. Although most fado houses are in Alfama, fado did came out to the streets in Mouraria right after the end of the inquisition in 1821, it was a song hidden for centuries by former Muslims. There is a commemorative marble guitar right at the entrance of Mouraria, the first known fadista was Maria Severa from the Mouraria too.

      @@jeanjacqueslundi3502 There isn't it. Fado comes from Coimbra University. A student created it. This is well documented!

      @@paulocastrogarrido3499 Sounds a bit weird. There's stuff in our culture that comes from our muslim heritage, specially in the Algarve and I never thought of it as having faced the same treatment.
      Do you also agree with the original poster as to the root of the word "fado" (being hadu)?

      @@anna3046 Hmmm I can give the benefit of the doubt to you, or the other two posters. What to do, when one is interested in the truth? :)
