  • The Portuguese Flag has been the official flag of Portugal since 1910, but its history is much older than the 20th century stretching back into the Middle Ages and the fight of its earliest counts and kings against the Moors during the Reconquista.

I've always preferred the blue and white to the green and red. Blue and white are considered monarchist colours, but if you just get rid of the crown, then blue and white are just Portuguese colours, like the azulejos. The flag of the Azores is blue and white and looks great.
Along with the shield and armilary sphere, I would add the Cruz de Cristo somewhere. Very powerful Portuguese symbol.
Another great flag belongs to the city of Lisbon which doesn't get as much love as it should. The black and white design can be found in the mosaic sidewalks all over Lisbon. Great video! Cheers.

In terms of colour scheme, I agree blue/white is better than green/red.
But in everything else the Republican flag is better than the Monarchist:
      - The 2/3 ratio of the Republican main colours is much more harmonious than the 1/1 or 1/2 ratios of the Monarchist flag (different ratios for land and for sea).
      - The Iberian (rounded) shield is the traditional one; the pointed one used in the Monarchist flag was borrowed from the French and it look awful.
      - The golden armillary sphere looks great and historically relevant.

The green and red colours were the colours of the secret society that committed the Regicide in Portuguese these society is called Carbonaria. The flag of Carbonaria had the green and red colours inverted but the Republicans chose such colours to symbolise that they were enemies of the monarchy.
I'm not in favour of the green and red flag because those are the colours of a society that it's pretty much like the free masons. Portugal's colours were from the very beginning blue and white. I'm Portuguese and I know that there are more Portuguese people that agree with me but unfortunately it's a minority.

I'm a fairly new subscriber and I haven't seen your other flag videos but as Portuguese who was taught all those myths in school (5 wounds of Christ, 30 pieces of silver, 7 castles conquered) and only recently did my own research about the history of the flag, I'm really, really impressed. You covered everything I expected you should and quite thoroughly and well reasoned, with all the uncertainties that there are about the early flags/coats of arms.
The only thing I might add is that still to this day, most Portuguese believe the green represents hope and red the blood of those who fought for Portugal, despite this being an invention of the Estado Novo authoritarian regime. The colors of the flag where never given an official symbolism during the First Republic although of course, there are connections to earlier flags but the real reason is that they were the colors of the Portuguese Republican Party as you said. And the current constitution mentions no symbolism, just that the Flag of Portugal is the one adopted after the Republican Revolution.

7:13 About Henriy's (Henrique) connection to Burgundy, you mixed up the things a bit...
Count Henry was not count of Burgundy, but count of Portugal.
He was from Burgundy, but not from the County of Burgundy (which was a party of Holy Roman Empire), but rather from thee *Duchy* of Burgundy (which was a part of France).
But Henry was not the duke of Burgundy, he was the younger son of the duke, and later the brother of the successor dukes, so he never inherited the title. That's why he came to Iberia: to look for fortune and titles, as a "cruzader" against the Moors.

    • @BogusLion
      @BogusLion Год назад +1

Well you're both kinda right, because the Duchy of Burgundy at the time of our first king, was indeed in that area, although originally it was from Switzerland/Austria(From Viena to Geneva), but 2 centuries later, it became a county with lands in the Netherlands as well, that kingdom went north of France with exchange of lands:
"The Burgundian duchy was absorbed in a larger territorial complex after 1363, when King John II ceded the duchy to his younger son Philip. With his marriage with Countess Margaret III of Flanders, he laid the foundation for a Burgundian State which expanded further north in the Low Countries collectively known as the Burgundian Netherlands. Upon further acquisitions of the County of Burgundy, Holland, and Luxemburg, the House of Valois-Burgundy came into possession of numerous French and imperial fiefs stretching from the western Alps to the North Sea, in some ways reminiscent of the Middle Frankish realm of Lotharingia.#
So in the 15 century that kingdom had lands in Switzerland, Austria, Northern France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg. But at the time of the first king of Portugal it was only Switzerland/Austria, and a bit of Northern France.

While I can't confirm this, I don't think the "West" in the Arabic name of the Algarve refers to the fact that it is in the "West of Portugal," as you stated in this video. This is because it isn't actually in the West of the country, but in the South. The reason it was called "the West," I believe, is that it was to the West of Al-Andalus, the term for Umayyad Iberia.

The king didn't fled to Brazil, he moved.
This move was planned since the early XVI th century, not thinking about the French but rather thinking about the Spanish.
It was a marvel of planning and logistics. Every kingdom service and 11000 public servants, aristocrats and royals moved at the last minute when the French were entering Lisbon. With this smart move, Portugal maintained its head of state, its independence and it was possible to negotiate with the British the terms by which the Portuguese army would by rebuilt a reorganised and by which would occur the war against the French that would cross Iberia and end in Toulouse.

Awesome to see my own heritage on this channel, even if you do speak like a Spaniard lol. You were a lot closer to the correct pronunciation when you said "Partido Republicano Português," here some further tips:
O ending a word is usually pronounced more like the Spanish "U"
R starting a word is more of an English "H" and at the same time "R" sound ("Republicano" sounds more like if you were to pronounce this word in Spanish: "Jrepublicanu"),
S ending a word/leading into a consonant is usually an English "Sh" sound, ("Estados Unidos" is pronounced like these words would be in Spanish: "Eshtadush Unidush," you already did this when you said "Português," nicely done),
J is a voiced "Sh" English sound, like a Chinese "Zh," (e.g. "Beja" is like English "Besha" while keeping your voice going),
RR is either a Spanish roll, or a uvular roll (Hard to explain, but you probably know what I mean), choose based on preference,
M and N ending words nasalize the previous vowel (another hard one for me to explain, "Bom Dia" is something like this in English: "Bouw Deeya")
The E's are significantly harder for me to explain, but these few tips should get you a whole lot closer
As for the video, "Muito Bem!"

    • @eefaaf

Hij bedoelt te zeggen dat de R in portugees een brouw-r is.
And the j is like the s in English leisure. The consonant in Chinese close to that is in fact the r, that is indeed voiced, unlike zh. In fact, most of the consonant in the pinyin transcription of Chinese that look like our voiced consonants, like b, d and g, aren't voiced either, but mostly like p, t and k, that in turn in Chines are pronounced more emphatically and with an aspiration to distinguish them from the former. Furthermore, the zh isn't the counterpart of sh, but of ch (c and z representing a 'ts' sound), where the h indicates the retroflex quality of the consonant, not palatalization.

I believe that a sound critique is a good thing to make us improve, especially when we know that our work will have so much diffusion and we want to be responsible and not spread disinformation. I'll start by saying that the armillary sphere is not a "symbol of Brazil" but a symbol of Portuguese navigations and explorations in the age of discoveries, it was a personal and quintessential symbol to King Manuel I (1495-1521) and became engrained as a national representation, In fact, you can see it all over the place in buildings of that era and in a famous painting in the Convent of Christ in Tomar, a spiritual center (Manuel was also the grand-master of the Order of Christ)
That's why later on, you are surprised to spot it in the 1816 flag, when in fact is not directly related to Brazil (pretty much a Portuguese creation, at least back then) but a symbol of the union of three realms (Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves). Being elevated to a position of Kingdom "per se" meant its ruler would be sovereign to a combination of realms. Afterward, You had the feeling that it was not exactly logical to ditch the royal symbol and re-used it in the republican flag, but the false assumption had been made.
As to Sebastian, he was not numbered for the simple fact that no one after him bears this name. He started to rule at the age of 3 in 1557 under the regency of his grandmother, and afterward under the regency of his uncle. he acquired full power in 1568 and ruled until his death in battle in 1578. So he ruled for 10 all years, having died 2 years before 1580 and briefly being succeeded by his uncle (Henry).
The first flag, I mean the blue cross over a white (similar to that of Finland's today) was really the first flag of the realm. Afonso Henriques or Afonso I was son to a nobleman from Burgundy, The Cont of Portucale, not the count of Burgundy. Also, Burgandy lasted for a number of centuries and became a very powerful Kingdom in West-central Europe and attained it's height in the 15 th century. The most powerful Duke of Burgundy John "The good" was married to a Portuguese Princess Isabel (daughter to John I, the "green cross" King). Burgundy is not the Netherlands, it is a historical region of France and once a very powerful player in European politics.
The green used in the republican flag is not inspired in a medieval military religious order (!). It's the color of positivism, a philosophy that profoundly affected in Europe in the 19th century and is inspired by equality and "progressiveness". On a more conspirational level, it is also the color of the Portuguese Carbonari (a secret armed branch of the republican party with direct links to the freemasons and loosely inspired in the network of Italian secret revolutionary societies of the early 19 th century). There's a point where lack of a proper investigation turns into second-guessing.
I also did not like the expression you used at some point something "another thing they invented" It's not in a good tone and may be misinterpreted. As to the frequency of changes, it was quite a stable flag, with each version for every 100 years. Also, it is important to remind that as a "personal" form of government it comes as natural that each monarch has his say on the design of the flag (Now the flag is stipulated under art 11 of the current Constitution as it suits a republic), not mention the monarch's personal flag (even then they had an intuition that the person of the King and the Crown were not the same thing)

Blue and white represent Portugal way better, in my opinion. Many people ( and not only monarchists) prefer the old colours. When he overthrew his older brother he kept his coat of arms. And since the flags and banner were the same as the king's arms, the border passed to the flag too. It was later on regulated the exact number of castles and bezants.

The true flag of Portugal is the flag of the Kingdom of Portugal (the blue and white one), the blue and white colors are actually a reference to the cloth of Our Holy Lady of Conception, protector, and Queen of Portugal (that's why since 1640 our Kings and Queens don't wear the crown on their heads).
Social revolution!?!? What social revolution!? It was a revolution created by radical republicans who were basically proto-fascists! They killed King Carlos I in 1908 because those republicans were linked to Freemasonry! Hell, the current flag of Portugal, besides the stolen national Historical symbols, the colors have no Historical meaning besides being the colors of the Republican Party and of the Carbonária. It puzzles me why we still have that thing that the "Third Republic" calls a flag. Plus neither in 1910 or in 1926 or even in 1974 there was a referendum if the people wanted to keep the Monarchy or wanted a Republic. Props for showing our Portuguese History, my friend.

I´d only like to add/correct that one main reason for the green color in the flag is because it is the color that usually is associated with Hope (the future), and it was choosed precisely because it would be a logical poetic complement to the red color, which means the blood of (all) the forefathers spilled for Portugal (the past). So, the past and the future are both represented (and linked) by those two colors in the flag.

whereas the House of Orange-Nassau of the Netherlands, founded by William the Silent was originally appointed Stadtholder Holland etc. by Philip II, King of Spain and son of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor who is in turn the son of Maximilian, Archduke of Austria and Mary, Titular Duchess of Burgundy, and Countess of Burgundy - they lived in the 14th century
these 2 houses of Burgundy (Capet-Burgundy - Robert I and Valois-Burgundy - Mary) are distinct and different . . . . not to mention the almost 400 years gap between them

The only flaw is the lack of a hard "R" in Republicano, like the French/German one.
