I grew up in Lisbon. My whole family and some of my friends (those who didn't eventually emigrate) lived there in the center my whole life, yet I am being forced to go elsewhere in the interior of the country or just straight up abroad far away from everything and everyone I know because the housing crisis won't allow me to move out unless I get multiple roommates (which growing up in poverty with several siblings my entire life, I am adamant in not having any anymore as my one rule). I miss that city so much, and I wish it were possible to get even a decent little studio apartment near my loved ones while I'm earning minimum wage, but it's absolutely impossible to get up on your feet and get any independence and space on your own while starting out your life unless you have a shitload of help from affluent buddies and wealthy relatives, or you're willing to keep living in squalor.
Watching all these digital nomads move here to work remotely while earning their country of origin's living wage fills me with both joy and resentment, because on the one hand I absolutely love meeting different cultures, but on the other hand their salaries are SO much higher than normal here and yet they're always talking about how cheap and affordable it is to live in Lisbon when... it's just not. Not for the locals, nor any of the people who actually grew up here. It really is no wonder that Lisbon and surrounding areas (hell, even Porto and Algarve) is mostly composed of tourists and immigrants now, I have a hard time finding any locals that haven't had to adapt their whole lives to catering to foreigners by either selling their businesses or ramping up prices to match foreigners' higher budget, turning their homes into AirBnb's, or learning English just to be able to communicate with their costumers in order to keep making a basic living. It's not as good a thing as you'd think, as that cute authenticity that everyone loves to talk about when they go back home after leaving Portugal is just rapidly fading away due to all of this.
I don't mean to push any buttons or insult anyone here, I'm just expressing how exhausting and saddening this whole situation is when you're basically getting forced out of where you belong simply because you're not even halfway rich. Portugal is just a massive entertainment park now, only meant for temporary people.

thank you so, so much for sharing your personal experience and providing myself (and other viewers) insight into the worsening situation. i wish the government set limits for the rent prices and that there was a way to alert foreigners of these ramifications so that they become aware of how this is affecting locals. i know that rent prices are crazy right now simply because ignorant foreigners accept ridiculously overpriced places just because they can afford to and don’t know any better! i honestly feel so guilty at times knowing that i’m one of the reasons why this continues to happen but feel at a loss at what to do :(

It's kind of funny, human nature. We leave places that have us in a rat race, so we can go to a place more laid back and relax. Then complain about the pace being too slow when it's not convenient for US. We have to learn to slow down and appreciate everyone around us is also going at a slower pace. Like rush hour traffic lol.

Portugal 10 mil people compared to Uk 67 mil the demand for goods between the two countries is understandable UK have more stores.
I love London , I visit my family monthly, rent prices are very high in London and unfortunately Lisboa is catching up to the rest of the Europe.
I hope we don’t get Amazon it will kill the small charming stores around every city. It was not so long ago Coca Cola was not allowed in Portugal. I hope we don’t become the Uk , nothing against it but we different people.
Uk as 24 hour gyms depressing, the reason is long working hours and no sunshine, I know my son goes at 5am he and daughter in law work 20 hour days. 17 months granddaughter spends 10 hours inside a crèche at 2000 pounds a month. They happy I am sad.

The thing with the cheaper shops you actually find a lot of them if you move a bit out of the city. For example around Amadora or Sintra (still in the Lisbon district) you find a lot of small family grocery shops where everything is incredibly cheap. Most of Portuguese of Lisbon actually don't live in the center of the city because it's incredibly more expensive.

I have difficulty understanding your comments about Amazon in Portugal. Delivery from Amazon Spain to Portugal usually has NO COST at all. Also if you have an Amazon Prime membership (which costs 36 euros per year and gives you access to Amazon Prime streaming!) delivery happens in around two days. If you order from Amazon Germany of France than you'll have delivery costs. I also don't see prices on Amazon UK being cheaper than on the other European Amazon sites.

@@nicolewaithera1814 I'm not sure I understand the difference between home address and postal address. You should use an address where there will be someone to receive the parcel during the following week... Please note that IVA (VAT) is 21% in Spain and 23% in Portugal, so when you check out there will be a slight increase in the price that you saw advertised. For example, if you buy something on Amazon Spain that is advertised for 121 euros, it will show as 123 euros on checkout if being bought from Portugal. Same applies to the prices advertised on Amazon Germany, France, etc. You need to check what IVA (VAT) is in each country to understand what the exact difference in price will be.

(Most european countries I've lived in or know how amazon works in usually ship from Amazon uk and us just fine... but I often end up paying more for the shipping than the product. lol)

    • @DOTPIE
      @DOTPIE Год назад +1

Late answer, but relating to using amazon uk or amazon us in Portugal, be prepared for the shipping costs to ramp up considerably as you said, and many, many items may even not be available at all to ship. I can tell you that even before brexit, amazon uk was always more expensive with shipping to Portugal at least, and people here usually order from amazon es (the spanish site even implemented a somewhat poor portuguese translation to cater to this a year or so ago), or even other amazons based in mainland europe.

Foreigners like Portugal for being cheap. My question is? Are we interested in receiving tourists or foreigners without money? Lisbon is not cheap and the salaries are low, around 1,000 euros on average. It's not 700, but even a thousand euros isn't enough for anything in lisbon. So, if you think you're coming to an African or Asian city where everything is cheap, forget it.

My daughter is on the Autism spectrum and currently attends a public school that offers a really good ESE (Exceptional Student Education for children w/ disabilities). Are you aware of any similar programs within any of the Portuguese Private Schools? She’s currently in 6th grade.

people in London can no longer afford to live there so that's why they have to live further out or if they want move country. Lisbon is no different. You can't have the benefits of incoming FDI and none of the drawbacks. at least people can move to lovely places outside of Lisbon where prices are reasonable. We are all born randomly into a country and we should have the chance to move other countries. Life isn't fair or it's totally fair depending

The UK's oldest legal ally and one of the oldest alliances in the world is between the UK and Portugal. And with the dominance of the english speaking world, they take advantage of learning English, especially the advtanges it gives them natively with their tourism industry. Of course the relationship between these two nations is the reason for the occupation of Macau (Portugal) and Hong Kong(UK).

Wouldn't say 300 days of sun but yeah, some 280 ate least 😂... Forget the language, stop wasting time with that, we all speak English and we love doing it... I lived in London and as soon as you start drifting from the basics and going for nice cheeses and even just cookies, prices are triple on UK Supermarkets... Housing yes, a T1 is triple minimum salary, remember, UK rents are high but minimum wages is more than double the Portuguese... A montly pass that allows you to ride any transport is only 30€/month, never ever pay as you go, in 2 days you will spend more than those 30€, but our public transports are terrible, everyone soon starts using Uber, do not believe Tourists making videos saying how cool transports are here, THEY DEEPLY SUCK after you settle... You forgot safety, Lusbon is very safe compared with other European capitals, although I also found London quite safe (Zone 1 & 2)

You complain about your experience with the portuguese bureaucracy, but do you realize it's exactly the same for foreigners in your own country?
In the UK foreigners applying for residency have the same experiences with bureaucracy... or worse. The UK's Home Office is notoriously slow and inefficient, often loosing entire files including passports.
You may have noticed that in Portugal you are a foreigner / estrangeira (sorry to break it up to you like this...) and since you do not have portuguese citizenship, you have to go through a bureaurocratic process to get residency here, that's what makes Portugal a safe place, all prospective residents are vetted.
No exception for the so called "expats" (aka immigrants who come from countries that feel superior).
TIP on cost of living: if you are moving to another country because the cost of living there is much lower than in your own country, you need to live like a local when you move there, not like you lived before in the place you moved from.
