already daily driving my pinephone w/ Mobian. When I get my pinephone pro i'm retiring android and ios for good. The Pinephone pro with keyboard accessory is a spiritual successor to my favorite phone of all time the Nokia N900. Its taken 12 years for a worthy successor to arrive. I am beyond elated. Long live Linux on mobile!!!
Are you using Mobian phosh by any chance? Wondering how you daily drive it.
I really am not able to daily drive it since the battery is so unpredictable. If I send a couple of messages through Telegram it's already down 7-10% :( Tried to take it with me a couple of times but it never lasts more than a few hours when I try to use it as I do my other Android phone.
Curious if I need to throw some settings around to make it last longer or make it a bit more snappy(don't get me wrong I'm not expecting flagship wonders but it often misses some of my swipes, reacts to swipes very late or takes 10 seconds to launch something)
I'm considering the pro but I'm worried it won't make a huge difference so I'll check some reviews first :)
Just found out by a blog post from the Mobian team I had to switch apt sources list to get the good stuff, curious if it improves my experience after installing these 700 updates :p
based
@@frankhuurman3955 Keep us posted. Did battery or performance improve? I'm a fan of telegram too so its a MUST...
@@readme7121 Aw yeah me too! A lot of people talk about how great Signal is with its encryption of messages, but enrcrypting the transport layer only and selling my data is even better! I love both the CIA and the antichrist!
This is great news! Congrats to the pine team and the community 🥳
Thank you to all who were a part of making this trailer - you guys did a really good job :)
Glad to see this idea still exist. There should definitely be a movement for true Linux-powered smartphones that doesn't run Android.
Can't wait for the PinePhone Pro Max ;)
A little more RAM, an upgrade in terms of graphics power, two more CPU cores and improved cameras. Looks good. ^^
They are also A72.
@@microlinux Yes, that's very promising for single-threaded improvements.
We already have enough ram to run smoothly.
@@krimsonbun I agree but it's still neat to have more. It could be used for more caching, I guess.
@@TheJackiMonster yeah but the mainstream phone users won't need more
I'm sure this is a good opportunity for people to properly "btw i use arch on my phone" :)
btw I a(arch)64
Holy crap I can't wait, so excited to get one! Need to go earn myself some extra coin now, bye...
God, I wish that was an oled screen. Oled + Terminal = infinite battery life
Hanging out for an E-ink Pinephone :) I get almost a week on my Hisense A5 Pro CC (colour E-ink). Love it, but would much prefer to have something natively Linux
My Braveheart screen broke. I was able to switch it out with a new screen. Maybe you could switch it out with a custom screen, and be able to run troubleshoots thanks to the convergence abilities.
@@mindtrizzle a electro wetting display on the pinephone pro would be great too
@@idcrafter-cgi I try to keep my expectations reasonable.
Fxtec is releasing a phone with oled display, you can have ubuntu touch natively on it.
I like this new cinematic stlye
So excited to get one and play around with it!
I can't wait to order one of these in upcoming weeks.
I never owned a smartphone. Didn't buy the PinePhone because of the low specs. But this might be my first smartphone. I love the RK3399. Got the PineBookPro and tons of RK3399 SBCs. I hate Android and IOS, so I'll never use that. Now just hope it will be a reasonable price. Good luck.
Its priced at 399 USD, does not look like reasonable price to me, but for those who can afford it it might be reasonable.
@@randomrandom316 That indeed is a bit too steep for me. I expected -300$. I can't give that much for something I don't need. I hope the price will come down in a while.
Yes, I want this phone. I assume it has a headphone jack. This is a MUCH needed device and I just shared it on FB as an alternative to current options in the marketplace. Yes it is different but I think many people would like that.
the hardware toggle switches are a great idea, but I'm mainly hyped for the new rice scene that will emerge from having linux in this form factor :D
Unixporn is already on this
Woah! I want one!
Dont think i'll cop this one seeing as I have the normal pinephone, but im damn glad its coming out. Still lookin out for the pinenote
I'm honestly waiting eagerly for a device that will allow me to replace an e-reader (nook/kindle) with something having the connectivity of a cellphone. Keeping it at or under 7 inches so I can put it in my pocket would be AWESOME!
I'd love to start seeing reviews on this phone. When are YT channels gonna get their hands on them?
This makes me so happy!
I hope it becomes mainstream
I'm excited to buy this! Those higher specs should help a lot with performance!
Nifty. I wish I could just get my original Pinephone working properly though. I know PINE64 doesn't do software, but neither my Pinebook Pro nor my Pinephone work particularly well yet, and I already don't see updates being pushed out for either device. PBP Manjaro's okay, but as unstable as a rolling release distro usually is, PBP Debian is a non-starter still, and Pinephone Mobian is functional but half-baked as of yet. At least any dev attention that gets brought to Phosh should be ported back to the OG Pinephone, I suppose?
Well...who am I kidding, I'll probably get a Pinephone Pro sooner rather than later anyway.
Link me to a PineBook Pro
NOW
Does the dock for pinephone works with the pinephone pro as well?
lookin good, can't wait to get one
this is gonna help me test my new mobile operating system :)
Also OpenCL1.2 (or higher) on the GPU drivers would be a wise thing to go ahead with _(especially to use with Sci Lab, geogebra and GTK4 such as in python3 and C++ and MariaDB with "Simple S-A-M-L PHP" installed for open id connect),_ and php generally like XAMPP/LAMP. A higher version OpenCL for greater double precision with gaussian function would be nice but as long as it is OpenCL1.2, that is the minimum and good. This can help with SDR dongles like the rtl2832u for HAM Radio (FFT) Fourier Analysis. A usb-boot option for an HDD would be a nice-to-have for SWAP space grinding to save NAND when the phone is deployed like a small desktop occassionally, but also for RieserFS , Reiser4 from year 2021 and up for journaling since RAM is so low for performamnce instead of ZFS, etc). In a BSD system (like for Jails), In Reiser4, the pinephone booting off HDD usb should make it obvious at setup (if BSD is chosen) how for files managed by unix-file plugin (reg40) you can specify item types implicitly via assignment "formatting=foo". Like say, formatting=tails or formatting=extents or "formatting=smart" _(default option)._ It's cute they hoiked 4GB RAM up her, but for a faster Filesystem we must be realistic for RAM and Reiser does well for that performance on mechanical HDD usb boot. Being able to purchase a 4year LTS distro supported version _(with ClamAV in a pinephone "e mail" address and all the above with an Open Id connect Service-provider and Identity Provider would be totally worth it, like say £100 each 4years LTS subscription for a member of the public and a higher pro version for business at a higher cost)._ Being able to buy a lifetime Open Id connect registration via a one off payment (like say £500) would be worth it with some of those things thrown in _(not including the phone but as an extra at the check-out when already buying the phone or after buying it when registering at home)._ That is sensible prepping.
Sending blake2b hashes (quadcore) over the LoRa can help a wise usage of such skinny a bandwidth such as for a rainbow-table. Mentioning all this means, if all such software is in the distro, any sandboxing (capsicum, etc.) is an additional security, not a replacement for that which is in the distro dependencies done by pinephone.
My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.
What about battery capacity and GPU? Are they better or still the same? If better, how much better?
I wish I knew how to ask this on an official chanel, but I'd there a way to also buy this with the "convergence" hub available for the original? Also I now no longer see the pro listed on the website... Where'd it go? Why'd that happen?
The PinePhone Pro is still listed on the community website. It is not yet for sale to the public. As for the dock, you can check the wiki for docks the community have reported as compatible with the base model PinePhone, however pretty much any 3rd party USB-C dock should work.
amazing - keep it going!
Can GPS also be switched off hardware?
beautiful!!!!
This is what I was looking for since 4 years now as these devices are powerful enough to fully cover my tablet, notebook, PC and smart TV usage. As soon as there will be a 8 core / 8gb version available I will get one. Once Windows is moved to ARM I will use it for home & work 24/7 as my only device I need to maintain and renew from time to time.
Microsoft has already working on ARM chipsets since 2017, but Microsoft doesn't go full-on Apple style because a vast majority of users are still using x86-x64 CPUs. Heck, I even see loads of retail stores that still use Windows XP to this day.
if it's linux what kind of apps can it run? how they can be installed? we have telegram on desktop linux can this version of OS run it?
Fantastique !
This actually nice move
Nice jobs, folks!
This is great work guys!
I have a disgust towards the big tech and what they're doing taking our human rights away.
This is the solution!
pretty dope. Hopefully I can get one of the olders for a lower price. Kinda want a linux ipod/media player. Not sure I would trust it for a daily phone just yet, but time will tell
Finally, great!
At least it gives some hope. Great job.
Well I'm looking forward to some reviews. I'm currently using older model phones that just aren't as good or are off brand stuff that doesn't have software support anymore so I'm stuck . Will seriously look at this if it runs well in reviews
The product isn't released yet, but there's some overall review on some Linux/Privacy supported channels like The Linux Experiment, Techlore and more. Full review... Not really.
@@ObjectPresents i mean one needs only to look at the specs to not be surprised, this thing is slightly worse than the *original* Pixel, for the same price as a 2020 iphone SE
Very nice, may I suggest an charger for batteries and a bigger battery option! :) around 6400 mAh or so, and it will protect the back camera as well.
- Darkijah
Ok Ok Ok, BUT no pinephonepro in the store !!! Any reasons ?
oh man, so touching
Wow!
You could bump the price up 200 or 300 more dollars get a full hd screen and get a distro that can run on it without any jitter and I will 100% buy it
Linux desktop distro on smartphone is still pretty much a WIP to this day, so it will be a while before we get there.
Hope that you will look into te possiblities of upgrading the pinephone to pro-ish version (I read on the website that it is, currently, not possible). It would really be a waste to have to buy a completely new one. Especially if the pro has decent battery life.
yay
Awesome! Great upgrades in the specs. Does it have exactly the same body as the original? From the looks of it, it seems so and since they also said accessories will be compatible.
Personally, I think 6GB of RAM would have been awesome since it'll really help when in desktop mode.
In any case, I will wait for now unlike before when I got the BraveHeart edition 😄
Honestly i did not expect original pinephone to perform as badly as it does. My old android with similar specs performs good enough for anything i want from phone, but pinephone not really. Some websites just work too slowly. It is getting better with updates, i think it can get to the point where it does everything i want from phone well enough but its taking long.
Great news
Does it have wine for android?
There’s a small group porting Android to the PinePhone. The majority of the work is going towards mobile Linux.
There's Waydroid for running Android apps on Linux, however it's in its early stages and has missing functionality and bugs.
@@PINE64inc thanks for your reply. i would love to buy it but i'd have to know if my online banking app would work on this device because i meed it a lot
@@Gigachad-mc5qz Have you ever tried it in a browser?
@@protocetid oh i havent thought of that one. im gonna see if it works but i kinda doubt it
4gb ram? My old Samsung 9x has 6gb...
...and probably wastes a ton of that by running all that spyware in the background.
Lads.
The GPU has OpenGL 3.1 and Vulkan support
Oh, and please make some decent cases (or partner with someone who will) as it will be difficult to find a case for my new PinePhone Pro when i do buy it.
Nice..my pinephone beta hasn’t even arrived yet 🙄
Wonder what the price is going to look like. I love my pinephone, but it's shit slow.
400 usd
haha same man, love it so much but it's so slow and non responsive to use(also battery life is still mweh for me on Mobian phosh) and I actually thought we could hook it up to a usb-c monitor without the use of the extra usb-c dock or maybe I didn't try that correctly yet.
The danctnix arch image is pretty good on power and speed, plus it can run with phosh, and I love it.
Can a phone have two usb ports so one can charge it on one port while attach peripheral on another? No, no dongle please.
There's the dock, and you know a majority of phones only have a charging/data port right.
What about the GPU? My understanding was that is one one the main limiting factors of the current pine phone
Basically same as in Pinebook Pro.
@@freemancrowbar
From the official website:
"Although both devices use a similar SoC, due to the thermal constraints imposed by the chassis, the PinePhone Pro is around 20% slower than a Pinebook Pro. The RK3399S chips used in the PinePhone Pro are binned and voltage locked for optimal performance with sustainable power and thermal limits. That said, the perceived performance of the two devices ought to be comparable due to the PinePhone Pro’s lower screen resolution and better optimization."
@@themedleb I said "basically". Still closer to PBP, performance-wise.
Well, on mainline rockpro64 the gpu was running at 800 mhz IIRC.
such a design...
Bah... My Pixel 3a XL crapped out a month ago. I caved and replaced with with a Pixel 5a 5G. Would have seriously considered the PinePhone Pro instead if it had been available then!
Don't worry its not available even now, will be more generally available only in 2022, so you anyways would not have been able to wait for that long.
este dolor llamado vivir en colombia
Yall should upgrade the processor.
Government “you must have this app”.
Me “is it available as a Linux App?”
Government “what’s Line ups?”
This should buy me a decade of messing with them.
This is much better than any of the Chinese crapphone on the market.
Take My moneyyy take My moneyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!
PinePhone glow up
Is this a pinephone ad or a Toyota ad?
Whatever model is released we Indians won't be able to grab these devices. Customs in India would deny the delivery inside the country.
Because India is mass market for mobile phones. Corporates want data from our devices. 😡
I want's a decent material, no cheap plastic. Materisl that doesn't burn!
A little dated in the RAM department, but looks interesting,
despite the fact it's voiced by the guy hired to do spoof cinematic trailers, and set to 1973 by James Blunt.
No, the RAM is perfectly great. Look at the newer iPhones.
It's not an Android device that wastes memory with bloated user space environment. 4GB is absolutely fine.
4 GB is the standard for the lower tier of a line up of phones. The iPhone 12 and 13 still only have 4 GB. The pro versions have 6 GB. iPhone 11 Pro only 4 GB.
This is the same for Android devices.
To the people comparing this with Android and iPhone, claiming 4GB is fine... how much RAM do you have in your PC? Because while this trailer mostly skips over it with just a brief still shot, the Pinephone Pro is intended to be docked and used as a desktop PC as well.
This also isn't Windows either ;)
It's pretty easy to get a usable Linux experience at even 2GB of RAM
I'd love to see a linux mint style smartphone, I mean linux mint already has its own open source app store, the software manager
Fire, needs more ram tho.
4 gigs is enough if you are only running a few apps.
i got 4 gigs in my laptop . I'm happy with it .
@@caleb7475 I know my usages, 6 gigs would be enough for me
Only higher end phones have more than 4 GB.
@@jeremyleeshields9721you can try a used oneplus 6 then. Although I think this phone will be enough for most people. They might also release a slight enhanced version later with more ram like they did with the pinephone 1
Kill the GPS`?!
Great idea, wonderful concept and good idea, but when will these companies who make these amazing projects learn, specs are too low, prices are too high considering hardware, design wise also lots of place for improvement (of course very dependent on individual tastes). Good example of how Linux and open source device should be is the Jingpad, decent hardware, good specs + all advantages of open source. I wished so much the next pinephone to be exciting and something the one could buy and use long term. I mean the specs are still too low for the date. Nevertheless I am happy to see this moving forward and improving. Hopefully 3rd generation will be it. You guys are close, but you should think not only enthusiasts, but daily consumers as well and see what they need and then you have one of the greatest devices ever, sustainable, privacy oriented device for long lasting use. You could become as big as greatest mobile device companies. Best wishes ❤
It's got the specs of a budget Android phone, wouldn't exactly call that "pro" but when your only competition isn't trying to compete and is instead making dev kits, you can call it whatever you'd like haha
Manjaro? Meh
You can always change it other distro of your fancy.
The PINE64 Community wants us to compromise on quality for the sake of Linux, alone.
Privacy and security is #1, but why should we get mediocre specs? We deserve better and are willing to pay a premium for it, so make it happen.
Make this a daily driver, not an experiment please.
Because mobile hardware manufacturers don’t open source their drivers and most consumers don’t stand up for themselves so nothing changes. The people buying this and those contributing to software development are the ones doing something about it. Pine64 isn’t big enough to develop their own powerful SoCs that are open. Buying PinePhones shows mobile hardware manufacturers that there’s demand for non black boxed parts, if there’s no money to be made they don’t care. Another option is to get your politicians to enact laws against shitty locked down phones (that also tend to be unrepairable). Thanks to the original model’s success Pine64 was able to make a successor, but don’t expect a newer model later if these don’t sell.
2023 now, you can't seem to buy this thing anywhere in the EU.
Congrats, wish you had someone from the Linux community do the voice over rather than a generic voice over.
nah this sounds more professional and to be truly successful you needs to capture as much of the mainstream as you can
Linux phones could be great once they're Steam & proton compatible.
That is not what Pinephones are made for. I recommend reevaluating your expectations.
Steam doesn’t run on ARM. Valve could totally make an x86 phone and accelerate mobile Linux development though.
Why good small companies like this one think it's a good idea to play mediocre dramatic piano music in a teaster/ad in 2021?
Awesome. But it would be great if it has pop-up camera, full screen display, stereo speakers, on screen fingerprint reader, Micro sd card slot etc.
400 usd too expensive for what it is
Does Pine64 source their materials for their phones ethically? I'm 100% sold on their focus on privacy and security, but want to know I won't be supporting a company that reaps the benefits of unethical practices.
Boost it with a Snapdragon 888 and this will beat everyone else
Completely proprietary disaster
Holy crap I can't wait, so excited to get one! Need to go earn myself some extra coin now, bye...
