Hello! I’m currently at the hsk 2 level. I started hsk3 book and memorizing about 60-80 words - 汉子 per day. My goal is to memorize all the vocabulary of hsk 4 about 1,200 words + (Chinese names and some words which is not mentioned there) by May 24th and start preparing for actual HSK4 (ibt)+ HSKK (口）on June 11th. Wish me luck! I’ll update my results after the test. ✌🏻

Make sure you're using the new hsk word lists.
Just a reminder: you want to memorize 60-80 漢「字」per day, not 漢「子」。There's a huge difference.

I learned Mandarin the same way that I learned English - by hearing nothing else in my 2 hour lessons, and watching the gestures, expressions, and body language.

Love this video ! I hard the hardest time remembering the radical "zhu2" (bamboo). The word reminded me of "zhu1" which means pig, so I visualized a pig looking UP (for the second accent) to a bamboo forest. Now it's so easy to remember ☺

this video applies to any language you want to learn, actually many of these techniques are very similar to the ones I used to learn first english then french, italian, turkish, romanian, except I did it intuitively, however lately Ive been fascinated by how effective these techniques work, its true some of us are better at creating connections or speaking but it works for everyone
I read every day 1 short article in chinese to increase my vocabulary. Afterwards I let google read it for me several times.

I found that the best way to learn words was to formulate the word into a question, then ask somebody the question and have a conversation with him or her about it. I would commonly do this with taxi drivers, barbers, security guards at the buildings where I worked and random people on Wechat. Eventually, I got into discussing the economy, politics and even whether or not people believed in ghosts or thought that they had souls.
The best way to learn any given language is immerse with native speakers. However if that's not possible, start with getting a dictionary, practice writing and see how words are paired and matched to give a meaning. Even as a Chinese Singaporean, we don't find it easy learning in school but listening and practice its writings helps. The dictionary is my best companion.
This is actually a very good way to remember the vocabulary and it's true that if you let your brain be creative it will help you retain the word. I also tried to remember the meanings of Chinese characters. And instead of just random strokes (of course they are not random, there's a whole science and history behind each stroke, but I'm just a laowai, what do I know) I started seeing small stories. Like in the character 跑 I can see a little man on the left running and pulling some weird toboggan on a snowy hill. The only problem is that not all the characters are easy enough to come up with the connection like this and even if you do, after a few hundreds of them the stories might mix up in your head 😅.
But the good part about this mnemo technique is that at some point you just "know" this word without needing to pull up that link again, same as at some point you just know the way to your new office without a need to use a map over and over again.

i have pleco i got the paid version, pretty cool to point on characters and it reads it for you. it has flash cards, I was trying to learn it over the years and I would spend alot of time on it, but i couldnt even converse a little bit. discouraged I quit.
For me it doesn't pay to study, it could just be the language, it can be the most spoken or complex in the world, the problem is a lot of confusing things in its characters and it takes years and time to learn and read, it can even be a course without paying for free but it doesn't work out because I have friends who live in two communities in china who speak english and portuguese told me it's not easy, it takes some time to learn.
The writing system is what makes Chinese so challenging, absolutely correct! That's why we spent years creating The Mandarin Blueprint Method curriculum. This course makes the writing system genuinely easy to tackle. Sure it still takes a few weeks or months, depending on how fast you want to go through it, but it's not hard anymore. Interesting and useful tips, for sure, thanks . As a DLIFLC grad (Russian) I observed that learning styles can be quite individualistic depending on how the learner is 'wired'.. some in my class did use mnemonics effectively (as in your BeeGees example) while others , myself included, found mnemonics completely counterproductive and a waste of time.. for some, mnemonics is just additional cognitive 'overhead' utilizing illogical associations, with other memorization methods working better. Everyone needs to engage in a bit of self-discovery to find out which method works best, there is no one universal 'best method' for memorizing vocab, language learning.

Im at B1 Chinese, I found my self improving my vocabulary starting from day 1 memorizing 15 words and to 3rd month I can memorize 50 now.

When I was still on a English basic level I learned "needle" because I was going to buy some and the package was in English. I could clearly see the item, and immediately realized "needle" was "aguja" in my mother language. Connections and personal experiences are the BEST for learning.

It's nowhere near as hard as you may think. It's just that most methods lead learners astray by teaching in a way that goes against how our brains acquire language. Continue watching our videos and all will become clear! You can also check out our courses (links in description).

Speaking about mnemonic. When I was learning my first characters I distinguish between 他 and 她 by radicals on the left side which looks like a male and female genitals for me. So, yeah, mnemonics can be awkward =)

Yes! I'm brand new, ran into these two characters and thought, "how am I going to recall the difference if they sound the same? Well... that one kinda looks like a penis..." then looked at the other one and I lost it laughing at myself. Glad I wasn't the only one!
I think we can do a challenge for exp we can separate characters in a one month and you can teach each of it how about that

It took me a year to learn about 600, because I let the meanings absorb well and do not rush. I don't like being overwhelmed with 100 per day. That is too much.

A question on category 1: do you actively review those mnemonics? And how to do you do it? I am wondering how you connect the mnemonic and the word. I feel like having to actively reproduce the mnemonic while retrieving a word might be a hindrance.
I have a follow-up question. Have you ever tried just memorizing the English meaning of a word by memorizing the mere combination of characters, without using keywords? So in a sense, using "only" the optical features of the combination of characters?

Also, yes, to review the mnemonics, we use SRS, that is, flashcards.
Have you applied this method, in any way, to teach your own children a second language? If so, can this program be modified by a parent to “expose” their toddler to the Chinese language?
No, as mnemonics require a more developed brain, and they draw from real life experience, both of which make it unsuitable for kids. They learn words the natural and slower way of pure exposure and repetition.

Bijiao.. bi + Jiao can literally mean pen/marker + shout. So to compare is like shouting with a marker... a pen.
"Bee bee cahn" means compare and contrast, where "cahn" means look. So translated literally imagine holding a pen in your hand using it to measure or count... mark mark look or tally tally look or slash slash look. I'm not just making this up am I, it sort of makes sense

Can you address if your course is suitable for people who only want to be able to talk and understand, so do not need to learn the characters, Pinyin alone is sufficient for them.

So on your first day you already know 100 words and can have casual conversations combining the characters. I don’t think any one can memorize that many characters a day I know how they work in sentences and memorize all the strokes tones and the pronunciation and the grammar rules even if you’re fluent, and you read the dictionary, you’re still not gonna have a memorized and understand all the meanings and the correct spellings in this case, characters and tones
If asked to make a choice Suibian is like "meh, its whatever, up to you". Going with the flow.
Sui, pronounced "shooway" is also water
Bian, pronounced "beeyeean" is also bend or alter or change
So suibian is waterbending :o
