abso lootely brilliant, we had big grins on our faces the whole way through your video , not because we're weird, just because we're happy you're getting things done!!
🙏
So great to hear! Yeah, getting those trusses up there has been a top experience for me. So great to have the help. :)
Dude Spence. Absolutely loving this build. Your a talented dude. I love your thinking outside the box/problem solving skills. I would work with you anytime anywhere.
So cool to hear! You made my day
I’ve been waiting for this one Spencer. Great job!! I loved Melissa’s play by play commentary too. My firewood is out of the woods and split. I just need to transport a truckload home each week until my wood shed is full.
Big thanks. Yeah, we had a great time out there. My firewood pile needs some TLC ... thanks for the reminder! :)
“Hideous but effective” … stealing this one for my headstone. Great video dude.
hahahaha! oh boy. that's a good one. a phrase that describes ssoooooooo much in life :)
Hey Spencer! This was quite a nail-biter. You and Melissa are a great team and having family help is the best! This is going to be such a useful structure. Here's a thought, picture roll-up doors on the sides of the containers for access to the midway point. My company had a similar structure and the roll-up doors made accessing the entire container so much easier, because lets face it, guys like to pack containers with stuff. I'm sure you've got great plans already swirling around the brain. I'm enjoying watching the process. Have a great weekend and you all stay safe!
I'll have to look around for some roll-up doors -- that sounds cool. I've definitely been realizing that accessing the containers from one end is a pain. Thanks for that! :) It's been a fun project
@@metaspencer I know you'll figure it out and make it cool.
I wish I had the patience you do Spencer. Every time I work on something for myself I lose every bit of patience I've ever had. My shed roof makes that "lopsided parallelogram" look great!🤣🤣🤣
Looking forward to the next one!
Oh that patience is a hard thing to keep alive! When things get really bad I usually walk away and leave things for a while :)
" I just gotta pause to say ... that it is SO nice having help ....." LOLOLolol..... FerrReal!!!!
Hahahaha
Awesome job Spencer! Things are really coming together. Great to see the family lending some helping hands. Take care!
It's hard to explain the gratitude I felt having all those helping hands. What a great day ... thanks
Thanks! Buy the family a cold refreshment!
We need those cold drinks! (Especially Melissa ... she really made this one happen.) Big thanks and much appreciated :)
Nice.
You won't see the funk when it is covered over in the roofing of your choice.
Thanks for sharing.
Michael (from Scotland)
I'm looking forward to that roofing! small steps
WOW Spencer what a wonderful idea using that steel tub beam! Great job guy's! Enjoyed watching!
I was pretty happy it worked out. :) thanks Loren!
This unicorn tractor is a damn good idea! Well done 👍
The unicorn worked out! What will it lift next? :)
You are getting it done! Looking good!
Coming along for sure ... it's been a fun one!
Spencer! This is awesome! I can't believe that boom worked! BOOM! Looking forward to seeing it comes together!
Yeah that boom working out was a mini-miracle. :) What a wild day! thanks man
When I was 10 my 15 year old brother helped by 41 year old dad build his dream 40'+72' barn. I slide the truss some 24' along the top. They were 2' apart. That barn in now 50 years old and Dad over built it. Back in the summer of 1973.
'73! that sounds like a priceless experience ... what a great opportunity
I'm a Home Theater nut. This looks perfect ! Put a Murphy Bed in the corner with Cindy Crawford. PERFECT !!!! cheers.
Big screen! I hear ya
I would have used 2x8 on the side roofs and cantilevered them out 4 feet for free covered storage for shelving and ladders, etc.
Great idea ... next time!
Can’t wait to see you do it.
You are very good, You stuck to the job, and did it. YEAH !!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Wow this is coming along great!
Thanks for the encouragement!
Brings a new meaning to sketch artist. That worked surprisingly well
We definitely got lucky there ... great to have the help!
Head protection if definitely a good thing!
"The only thing sketchy.. other than the whole thing" 😆
That about sums it up
I love those GRK screws, they are the best! I'm glad that you had some help for a change. Looks awesome!
GRKs all the way, for sure. Thanks for taking a look ... we definitely had some fun out there
Excellent video! I also use my tree gear for other jobs. Well done sir
I knew that extra harness would come in handy! :) good eye
Of course the gutters on top of the truck. About like where is my tape measurer? 😂
you said it
I love this tractor extension!
The dang thing got the job done, that's for sure. :)
Great job! It's great they didn't have to walk a wall to help set trusses.
yeah much more foot room up there than usual :)
Your my man! Exactly what I was looking for!
excellent ... good luck with the project!
you guys killed it!
It's been a fun one! thanks
Gracias amigo! mucho gusto!
Looking great.
Thanks buddy!
Great job!
Thanks for checking out the build!
Great tractor work.
Big thanks! Yeah, it was nice to see it come together
Looks good!!!
Thanks for checking it out, man
very impressive group effort
Couldn't have done it without the CREW for sure!
I cannot believe that a metal stick vetically attached to the BUCKET OF A TRACTOR WORKED!!! Yeah... Farm Craft!!!
Yeah it was a sketchy last-minute idea and somehow worked out :)
Nice work sir! All kinds of storage.
That's what I'm looking forward to! Thanks man
I like ur tree vids but I gotta say, I prefer the building and working around the house vids u do. With that said, keep the vids coming. Can’t wait for the next updated build
Thanks man. Yeah, I have to admit that I feel the same way ... but the tree jobs pay the bills :) Roofing is on the way!
@@metaspencer I hear ya, do what u gotta do to pay the bills lol
I enjoy ur vids.
when a tree guy builds a barn, he does it with his masdam 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
and climbing harness :)
I set a lot of trusses with my 30 ton 110' of stick boom truck. It always amazes me when I see equipment on the jobsite that could do the same job with a little bit of modding, but the people are either too ignorant or lazy to figure that out!
110' stick boom! now that sounds like a useful piece of equipment :)
You have some good videos
Big thanks! Nice to hear
Awesome ingenuity
Thanks! Yeah, it was monumental to get that part of the project done :)
good job folks
Big thanks!
awesome job Spencer if there's a will there's a way you will figure it out be safe
You said it man. Big thanks
I had that crazy idea to do the same thing . Now that I see you did it successfully I just might do it
Good luck!
Nice work
Thanks buddy!
You walked out into the middle on those trusses and I thought -- OK here he goes again. Any excuse to hang out high.
hahaha! I thought you might notice that. Kinda crazy up on that jungle gym :)
it would be very easy t o build them your self, just leave those 2x6s in place as a mold and just build what below, the hardest part would be hand pressing those truss ties
Yes you're right -- set up a jig and you can mass produce them
That boom is a cool idea, but people really need to be careful. That puts a huge amount of stress on the rams and can bend them. It's a lot of leverage and we all know how much power a simple lever has. Shovel attachments on buckets can do damage too if people are not careful and watching.
Now that you mention it I know what you mean ... fortunately the tractor survived the abuse and keeps on ticking. Thanks for that insight
I thought you were joking at first about having a Crew, hah!
Funny! Yeah, they came out to help and boy did I need the extra hands. Now if I could just get them all out there working the trees :)
If you ran a cable with a turnbuckle in from the top of the boom to the back of the bucket your boom Pole would be stronger.
thanks for the tip! yeah that's a good idea ... I was using it again recently and that would have been a big help as it was FLEXing a lot
😊👍
Привет я из России 😊👍
Отличный! Приятно слышать
You just had the same company fabricate the exact same truss, did you not read the information data sheet they provided you? It provides the weight of ea truss. A tow hook from a roll back wrecker works great for setting trusses.
Yeah those data sheets were great for the new trusses. All kinds of info in there -- but I never checked for weight :)
Very nice almost like Matts place
Thanks for checking it out
The end trusses are saddle trusses and are not self supporting they are designed to sit on a wall, etc to form a gable end,(they are not triangulated)also being a gable roof you must diagonally brace the trusses during erection otherwise the whole roof could collapse like a pack of cards!!!This video is not how it is done in Australia!!
Good thing we added all that diagonal bracing -- might have been in a later video. The end trusses ended up supported by posts so it might be okay haha :)
Those end trusses are designed to be on a gable wall, not free-spanning..
I heard that from someone else, too ... thanks for the info!
It’s looking good so far. The rafter lifter mechanism seemed to be just what the job called for. I’ve never seen a come-along that uses a rope, but it makes a lot of sense for longer spans like your barn. I’ve been looking for building options to build something to hold our 42 foot RV and have some kind of structure that is reasonably priced, while still functional and insular able. I’d be curious to know how the cost of this structure compares to a pole barn of similar size.
It's been a fun project for sure ... the rope puller is from Maasdam amzn.to/3RoaPx8 ... I use it all the time. It'll be nice to get that RV inside :)
do you think there will be container movement from frost enough to bother your roof? and the reason i ask is i am about to do the same thing. the ground is hard, i plan to put 3/4 inch gravel down with round 18 inch by 6 inch thick concrete pads down?
my boxes are on concrete piers that go down below the frost line ... no movement so far :)
I'd suggest doing down below frost line in your area for the footers
Looks nice but I would of used less wood.
Sounds like a way to save some $$$$$$
@metaspencer is there a diy for the breakaway rope system ?
the rope up top?
Hi, how are you? How much did you spend in the whole building? Beginning to end? Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
It’s been on the cheap for sure … but I don’t keep track of costs
I would say 75 lbs or half of your weight maximum
got lucky I guess!
What is the span ? And what was the cost of the new trusses?
30' span ... I can't remember the cost of the new trusses but they weren't cheap!
Should have had a flat truss designed and installed instead of a stub wall which would have taken the loads to the corners. Since the roofs and walls do not have much capacity for load what did you do to support the roof?
I see your point there but the ceiling height would have been a lot lower. The knee walls come down close to the edges and seem to be doing fine. I've considered welding in reinforcing triangles ... I see your point for sure!
@@metaspencer It shouldn't affect the ceiling height as it would be installed in place of the short stub wall you have on the exterior that would span the length of your container most likely what is referred to as a gang truss only it would be a flat truss. The walls and roof are not designed to carry any structural load, only on the corners.
@@gary24752 Yeah I see your points there. Makes sense
Not a big fan of drill/screwing the tail of rafter, blocks between with hurricane ties.
I see your point there man ... next time I guess!
How big is that tractor
48 horse on a good day
I keep the hawg on the back for extra weight
A lot of waisted money and time, all had to do was install steel trusses been a lot less money and a whole lot faster. Same concept as a pole barn. They are spaced 10ft apart with 2x4 runners for metal roof . Been so much faster and more durable.
Sounds like a good way to go but I've never worked with them or found them second hand on FB (like these were) ... so less $$$ on the trusses but more framing needed under the roofing? I can't quite picture it
@@metaspencer No it would be less framing the trusses attach directly to containers then you have 2x4 runners across them for the metal roof. A lot less materials needed. On a 40ft container would only need 5 trusses!!
@@Gearswapper oh dang man, I see what you're saying now. Sounds like a cool way to go ... "next time" as they say haha
need nails and screws
This could be a house too , not a barn , you walked on those beem , please be careful,
Yes it would be a cool way to build a house ... I might do that next
Amateur. We built all our trusses.
Absolutely! That's so cool that you build them. I thought about it but just kept doubting myself without a flat hard surface. Well done
@@metaspencer We built them in place. No hard flat surface. My dad was a master woodworker.
@@joeyl.rowland4153 Cool too hear. You guys have some serious SKILLS :)
Are your trusses built to any engineering standards if not they might fail!
@@davidwalters3419 when theose houses were built in the 1980's we created the standard those houses are still standing. They went through a severe winter with a large accumulation of snow.
Engineering standards are solely for causing house values to increase, and were generated by theiving insurance companies.
Our trusses were strong than modern day manufactured trusses.
