My father & I attended the ‘82 US Open. On 14, we were standing behind the green directly behind Watson’s ball looking straight down the line it traveled as his birdie putt went into the hole. After Watson holed that putt and watched him hit his drive in 15, we went straight to 17 to get as close to the green as possible. As Watson was readying to hit his famous chip shot, I whispered to my father “I think he will get it close”, to which my father replied “He’s not getting it close; he’s chipping it in.” A man standing next to my dad gave a big eye roll as if my dad didn’t know how hard that shot was. When the chip went into the hole, my dad let out a big “I told you so” and the man standing next to my dad just walked away shaking his head. Lol
Fantastic stuff - thanks as always for posting. I remember Rogers being close to tears at the end but watching this again, I can really see why. If his putting had come anywhere near to matching his iron play, we would have had a very different outcome.

My memory of this Open is, I was with my Dad at NY’S Belmont Park Racetrack making thousands of dollars. I remember watching a little of this in the Bar. It was my Greatest Day at the Racetrack.. I hit 8 out of 9 races!! I won over $35,000 that day at Belmont., that’s hard t do at a Racetrack.. I was buying everyone in the bar drinks when Watson made his famous Chip in!! Ahhh Great Memories!! 🐎 ⛳️!! Lol 😂
Nicklaus had to beat one legend after another. Sometimes he played good enough to win but did not. Tiger played against guys who saw the red shirt and their knees buckled. Nicklaus had to beat guys who won multiple majors and refused to fade on Sunday.
The guys Tiger played against saw an Avalanche of Fans and Photographers following and Cheering Tiger on and said "Screw that, I didn't sign up for this!" They just tried to get out of Tiger's way. 😅
@@radar0412 Jack had a similar problem when he started out. Arnie's fans, against his wishes, gave it to Jack. Calling him fat. That soon ended once the GOAT was accepted. Tigers fans were uneducated World Wrestling fans who only knew the bare minimum about golf. Tiger remained silent while his fans disrespected his opponent so that became the norm. Trash person who was liked by uninformed fans whose golf knowledge grew the more they drank.

Tiger's opponent's had 2 insurmountable problems, 1. dealing with the huge throngs of Fans and Photographers, 2. trying to beat a fundamentally superior player who could deal with the pandemonium. It was natural for Tiger's opponent's to just get out of his way, because nobody was skillfully better than Tiger or mentally tougher, with very few exceptions like Darren Clarke and Hal Sutton who were able to stand up to Tiger at least once.
@@radar0412 True about Tiger until he lost his edge around 2012. He switched swing coaches and started steroids to look like a linebacker. He never recovered and only won one more major. I hope your not comparing Sutton and Clarke to the hall of famers Jack faced. Also the crowds following tiger were low intelligence and thought they were at a football game. They were dead silent when the home team (Tiger) had the ball. They never became totally quiet when the visitors ( his opponents) hit their shots. In Jacks day at least the crowd that cheered Arnie were respectful when Jack had a shot.

Had Nicklaus played that putt for birdie on the final hole like a Regular downhill putt, I bet he makes it or lips out. But trying to force the issue with the putter on 18 was very Un-Jack like. Guaranteed Jack's thought the same thing for 40 years.
Amazing to watch this. All the talk over the years was Watson’s chip-in on 17, but his putts on 10, 11, and 14 were also huge. Thanks for posting.
