Olivia was an angel who blessed this earth. Her legacy of music, animal welfare, her clinic and her spirit will always have an impact on the world. She accomplished her purpose and was called home. Forever grateful for this beautiful soul.

I can picture her with this glow around her just like in Xanadu, my favorite movie. Olivia epitomized class, beauty, femininity, talent - her voice was angelic.. I am 41 years old and, my dear Olivia, you have been my inspiration and accompanied me in the good and the bad moments, in happy and sad ones, since I was 14 years old. What an awesome tribute by the great Delta Goodrem. Thats love and friendship speaking. Olivia was a sweet lady and will always be missed. She leaves a great art and human legacy. I had the privilege to see her in Miami in 2007 and it was a great intimate show.

That's so true - as human beings we're so flawed and multi-faceted but she was revered as much in life as she has been since passing. Usually people look back with rose coloured glasses after someone dies but she's always had a completely unblemished reputation. What wonderful person she was.

@ Melvyn Gardner. Her mother wasn’t British if you use your own definition. I already knew she was the daughter of Max Born, the German Jewish Nobel Laureate in Physics and as a mathematician he was instrumental in the development of quantum mechanics. He and his family emigrated to Britain to escape the obvious Nazi threat as his career as a university professor had already been suspended. His daughter Irene, born in 1914 and who later married and had Olivia and her siblings had an obvious German accent. As someone who met Olivia privately after we’d both recovered from breast cancer, I knew that she unfortunately had a high risk of getting It in the first place. Most of us involved with breast cancer education learn that Ashkenazi Jewish females have a very high genetic risk of having it. I don’t presume that Olivia’s mother brought her up in that faith but the reality is that biologically, she inherited the genes from her mother’s German Jewish family. Ben Elton, the British/Australian comedian who now lives in Fremantle, WA, is Olivia’s third cousin via her mother’s side. By coincidence, both Olivia and Ben had become naturalised Australian citizens. Ben married an Australian and they’re living here until their children have graduated from high school.) I’m not a great believer in strangers making statements on another person’s perceived cultural identity. We all know that people like Olivia, Ben, John Farnham, Sandy Gutman (Austen Tayshus) and thousands of other migrants were born somewhere else but when they sound Australian and have formally chosen to be naturalised, then who are we to define them and override their own sovereignty over self? Ironically, in the case of Mel Gibson, his paternal grandmother was Eva Mylott, an opera singer who was born a few kms from my home town in NSW. Dame Nellie Melba heard her and encouraged her to be her protégée and come to London for an opera career outside Australia. She later went to New York, ( I’ve heard anecdotally from her Mylott relatives in Moruya that she was with the Metropolitan Opera but it’s not included in her Wiki bio.) She met an American, John Gibson and had two sons, one being Hutton Gibson, Mel’s father. Hutton’s decision to bring his family to Australia would have been helped by the fact that his mother was Australian. Is it true to say that Australian blood was running through his veins? A few generations earlier they weren’t from Australia or the USA - just mainly Celtic migrants from various parts of the UK. If you or other readers are curious about Eva Mylott, her Wikipedia entry has a good bio page and photo of her. A search for Mylotts Bakery Moruya has an article about Jack Mylott by the local historical society and includes some details about Eva’s relatives. Basically, I think that modernised travel should have changed any rigid concepts of who we are. I had a Scottish grandfather who migrated here with his family when he was just one year old. Through that accident of birth I was eligible for a visa giving me the right of abode in the UK some years ago. All the above examples and then everyone we don’t know personally are analogous with various lottery tickets. Some have advantages and small wins, some are bigger wins. Some are no wins but if we’re legally eligible to change our ticket through our occupation or by sponsorship we may be able to change our future.
