    Good job Moose!! NOE U got me thinking about that pile of old PC's and all the ones I see sitting by the road.ALL THE TIME.
    I live in Jupiter Florida.The folks around here have WAY MORE MONEY than common sense.
    Bet I could collect 50-60 used PC's a month. Some need minor repairs,(which I would fix and sell as good used) and many are older and would just go on the pile... I have everything U have mentioned an all 3 vids.All I need it the Precipitation agent.
    I have saved all vids,subscribed to your channel as well.
    Nothin' left to do now but, acquire precip. agent and START MAKIN' GOLD BABY!!!
    Thank you Mr.Moose for allowing us to see your fine method of gold recovery..
    Someone once told me "it's useless to mine gold in Florida"...We know better tho,huh? :-)

    What I did was is hot sand clear the cellphone boards then I soaked the boards in nitric acid now I am stuck with dark mud substance from the board mixed in with gold flakes not being able to separate the mud that came of the boards I mixed in the bleach in to dissolve mud and it has not dissolved yet.
    ie did not clear the cellphone boards with liee to remove green solder.

    ok .. ? i have over 1.5 lbs of gold fingers... that were pulled out of old boards....there solid fingers not like the flake on the green boards .... cant i just smelt them all down into one solid chunk....? or smelt it all together and refine it down to it purest form ? most of it doesnt have any soder on it however 4oz's of it does... cant that be melted outta the gold by smelting it out ?

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  7 лет назад

      that would be a big mistake. The result would be far less than 25% gold. There is still layers of other metals under the gold and once its melted and alloyed together, you will need much stronger acids to purify it.

    What's the point of the borax? I thought borax was used in iron and steel smelting to inhibit oxidation but gold doesn't oxidize. Is the borax used to keep the gold from sticking to the crucible?

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  10 лет назад +1

      ding ding ding ding!!! We have a winner! Yup, the melted borax makes a nice glassy finish that allows the gold to all melt and pool together. make sit a lot easier to pour as well.

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  9 лет назад

      Luke Ketelhut Honestly I am not sure, there are a lot of variables. My gut says the gold fingers because the base material green board is far lighter than brass the base material under the gold in ide pins however, I would say there is much more surface area of gold in one pound of ide pins. As for the pins, you can do all at once if you like, for one pound you would need at least a half gallon of hcl. as for the heat, it is only that hot at the focal point of the flame.

    • @moosescrapper5928

      Miner Kyle If its gold then yu should be able to melt it down. You will want to make sure you have a layer of borax on top and approach it really slowly to not blow away the gold.

  • @bdaug67
    @bdaug67 8 лет назад

    I'm new to gold recovery and I'm just wondering why the fingers have to go through the acid wash before smelting. Couldn't you simply remove the gold bearing material from the pc boards, ink cartridges, phones, etc. and smelt them?

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  8 лет назад

      no, the gold layer is so incredibly thin that what you would be smelting would likely me 90% or more copper, nickel, etc. The acids remove those metals. Make sure you read CM Hokes book before trying any of this stuff. It should answer all the questions you can come up with

    Question. So is it better to go through the process of collecting gold fingers and refining, or selling the cartridges whole to a recycle company?

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  9 лет назад

      +Matt Lytle wait, what? sounds like two different things....are you talking about ink cartridges? or Ram sticks? Ram does not come in cartridges, and ink does not have fingers.... Either way you will likely make more money selling the inks to recyclers, and prices are over inflated on ebay for gold material right now so its a sellers market. You will also make more money selling the ram in ebay as a whole as well.

    That blue color in your crucible (once you have your button) tells me you have quite a bit of lead or copper in that gold. Have you ever considered using Aqua Regia to actually refine the gold first? Simply mix up some Aqua Regia, mix in your gold and stir until disolved (this makes Chloroauric Acid), then once the Aqua Regia is saturated (can't add any more gold into solution), now filter through a buchner funnel through a coffee filter (to catch contaminants, silica, etc.), then precipitate out the gold from the Chloroauric Acid by slowly adding Sodium Metabisulfite. Filter again (to remove your gold dust from the bottom of the beaker), then use THIS powder to make your button. Your end product is almost 4-9's pure. Your lead, copper, etc. will be thrown away during the filtering process.

      @davidlee1719 8 лет назад +13

      As he said, he is not a professional just a hobbyist. Getting to 22K or higher is great for most hobbyists and you could refine repeatedly to get slightly more pure each time just using the process HE used. I am still grateful for his time to put the video together. Most people want methods which are cheaper than Nitric and HCl (Aqua Regia) so this Poor Man's AR is the perfect trick for us.

    Hi moose, I have a couple of questions when you have all the foils such as you do in a large vial and your brain is telling melt it ..melt it, how do you go about that with out your torch accidently sneezing on it..? And second I cured my cruisible and tried to melt what I thought I would get a beebee ...(wrong) lol but there is a tiny tiny piece can I just leave in there till my next melt and will it group up? Please pardon me for my question I am one month old on this and need all the help I can get as I have ruined already, I find your videos be really helpful to me thank you so much for your videos god bless. Martin, Tucson Az

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  6 лет назад

      Hi and thanks for watching! Well, for your first question, I would try to convince my rain to not try and melt it, but if you must... rinse the foils well in a filter, roll them up in the filter paper and squeeze out as much water as you can and put that in your melting dish with some borax on top. let the flame approach real slow and you should be fine. Also helps to do that over a corning ware casserole dish just in case. As for the dot stuck in borax glass, yes, you can leave it there until the next batch. Its not going anywhere and when you heat it up again the borax will liquefy and free it up to join its brethren gold being melted.

  • @grim5866
    @grim5866 9 лет назад

    The glazing really is important. I did not glaze my crucible enough and now I have a mess to scrape out that is really stuck. Remelting doesn't work eather as the heat just seems to disperce.

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  10 лет назад

      Hi there, if you used HCL and an air bubbler, you can save it and use it next time. Keep reusing it until it stops working then put some stainless steel in there to cement the copper out of the solution and use it some more! It can be used quite a bit! When completely done being usefull, you can evaporate all the fuilds out so you are just left with like metal salts and bring to a waste disposal facility or attempt to neutralize it and dispose safely.

Thanks , many times over. my 60 birthday coming up and I'm living off my VA pension because my body's wasted. do you have video on your channel that speaks to where to find the most mid grade boards. would flip that gold so fast and buy silver coins that's my gift to you moose. sorry so long

Its hard to always know what will be inside something though. Best of luck to you!

    Love your videos, have you tried doing the same process for the gold trimmed boards? some of them have large corners that look gold plated to me and i bet you could get monster size foils if you cut the corners of the board and processed them like fingers.

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  10 лет назад

      Yup, you can, however those are more from newer electronics and the gold is mostly flash plated on there so the foil is so thin it breaks apart in the ap. But its still gold!

      You can use the same one, not a need to reglaze before each use. I suggest one for gold and one for silver as the copper in sterling tends to coat the crucibles.

    just curious, how often are you collecting salvage for computers to be able to make this much gold? Is it worth the time to hunt online for freebies?

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  9 лет назад

      +Josh M That is entirely up to you if it is worth it. I do the gold recovery part because I enjoy it, not to make money. And if you are eBay savvy, you certainly can make money off the rest of the computer parts. SO yes, I feel it is very much worth it.

  • @jkrush
    @jkrush 10 лет назад

    2.5 g = $96.79 total gold value as of today not bad for a pound of scrap...just have to subtract the cost of supplies thanks Moose!...by the way what would your supply cost be?

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  10 лет назад +1

      Well, supply cost is reall yhard to say. I think I spent about $75 for everything. The HCL, bleach, SMB, MAPP, crucible, tongs, borax, beakers, and the little odds and ends. A lot of the stuff I get while scrapping for free. Most of the items I can use indefinitely, the only items that will need to be replenished are the chemicals and even those last a long time. I have had the same $3 box of borax for 3 years, the same $1 bottle of bleach for about that long too ( I think my wife took one at one point for laundry...) and the HCL is about $7 but I really get a lot of use out of one gallon. SO I guess you could say that the equipment would cost about 2 grams of gold and then the next several ounces are processed free.

      Hey Tibor, I did not use Borax because when this video was made I was still learning alot. I do use borax now. At this time I was using the slow approach method which can work ok but you are right, a tiny amount of gold can be lost to blow out. Thanks!

    This is beyond awesome! I do have a question though. When you are done smelting down the gold and you finally have that little nugget of awesomeness is there anywhere specific that will take your word that it is all gold and was smelted down properly? Or could you just say 'this is pure gold'; do the acid test, and it's good to go? I guess what I'm asking is is there any concerns when selling it at market value to anyone?

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  9 лет назад

      +starpointstudios Not really any concerns. places that buy gold would never take anyone's word on anything. Even if it was in a pretty little perfectly shaped ingot with 24K stamped on it. They all test it due to so many forgeries.

    Once the Gold is in a liquid state, I throw a few pinches of borax in there. It will remove the surface impurities from the Gold. The end result is quite beautiful.
