5:47 those settings are sampling frequencies, not bit rates. LO-FI 1 is 7.81 kHz, LO-FI 2 is 3.91 kHz. SP-202 is actually processing sound internally with 16 bit rate.
I used to frequent a Cash Converters in Braintree Essex, the manager asked me if I could take a SP-202 home and check out its functionality, see if it was ok and worked as it should. He had no idea how it worked. Having no manual, I quickly worked out how to sample with it so I could demonstrate it for him the next day. Didn’t want one back then, but now years later, at least a decade actually, I now have a SP-202 and a DR-202, it’s drum machine accomplish. They look good together. It’s lofi sampling along with the gritty drums of the DR-202 make them good play mates.
The first beat I made for my underground album “2003 Beat Poetry” was made on the sp 202. I was embarrassed back then because I couldn’t afford an MPC 2000XL but now I’m honored that I use that machine. I made the rest of the album with a Boss Br8 digital recorder sp 303 and sp 505. No MPC’s involved. Great video!
My first SP, and the start of a whole new way of making beats. Sometimes not having the luxury of resemble and limited effects forces you to get a bit more creative. Great video!
I just got an SP 505 from eBay today....awaiting delivery , after getting the SP 202, and SP 808ex , I would love a SP 303/404 ( Koalasampler app has been a welcome tool to my arsenal) ...the SP 303 for the weight of sound ....but the 202 is the dirty secret, that sounds great... Gr8 series.... viva la SP....be in good health all.
Every video i see abt the 202 people just gloss over or flat out ignore the pitch locked "timestretch". The very reason i picked this puppy up. Such an important utility when coupled with other vintage sampler/sequencers
Nice video - I’ve always been interested in the SP series, but just haven’t gotten them for whatever reason. The 202 seems one of the more interesting ones of the bunch to me. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the beat you had in it too. Didn’t even mind the ring mod.
Love my 202, use it in every beat I make. Pretty sure your 'Delay' function wasn't working because it only works when it's in 'Mono'. Your beat was using 'Stereo'. I'm like 90% sure that's the reason.
I bet a lot of people bought them for that reason. A friend of mine had one back in the day and it was the first hardware sampler I ever used so it has special place in my heart.
This is so dope and informative. Would love to see if u can do the similar presentation on Kaoss Pad products. Heard that Kaoss pad are more steady than SPs. Most people collect these products for effects more than anything.
Cheers great vid thanks!! Getting my SP-202 this Friday always wanted one 😁. Got a fairly good deal in great condition. Who knows they might be up to 5 or 600 bucks within a year or two😦
If they updated the 404SX with velocity sensitive pads, 16 levels (or 12 levels in the case of the SP), and being able to record externally while simultaneously resampling samples onto a new pad like the 303 is capable of doing. Oh yea and also being able to play more than 2 stereo samples at once while resampling. I'd sell some furniture for that
The collector in me would like to have one but I feel like my SP-606 covers that ground already. Is there anything unique to the 505 that the 606 can't do? Thanks for watching and for the comment by the way.
@@MattGreerMusic tbh I’m not sure what ground the 606 covers, so maybe my comment was a little hasty. The 505 has a good auto loop function, and also a bpm sync...but the less said about that the better, it’s pretty poor.
@@johnchesters81 I think they're probably pretty similar. The 606 has an auto-chopper, a 4 track sequencer, midi I/O for beat sync. Probably a lot of overlap to the 505 I guess. I would still like to have one though. I just love these things.
I thinks it’s primitive functionality is what makes it good. It’s easy to get your head around, even the inbuilt mic is adequate for immediate sampling.j
Which SP would you recommend to pair with Korg KP3 and MPC 1000? I was really looking into the 303 and 404sx as well. Sequencing isn’t a big thing to me just the tone and sound quality. I mostly make Drill, Techno, and Rap-Hip/Hop etc etc so I’m open to any opinions. Thanks :)
@@MattGreerMusic maybe you understood the question - but I’m guessing they’re wondering why you’re not reviewing them... But the obvious answer is that you don’t own them. Maybe you can borrow them to complete the series!

My dad used as a DJ sampler i use as a lowfi machine. Liked the look of it since a kid🤣

Great video ! Did a great job , can’t wait to see more from your series ! 😈😈😈
Thanks for the kind words!
Great series! I have a Roland SP 404sx and a Boss RC 505 which I not only consider a looper but a sampler as well. My personal opinion ;-)
Nice. I've never actually tried the RC 505 but I certainly see them in a lot of hardware setups.

That 4bit lofi with some low pass would be a cool thing to put an intro before it opens up into the much higher quality beat drop

What you describe is a MPC. :)
That function alone placed 303 in it's own class!thought the 404 would do it but it don't😔
So weird how some SP's do things that later versions of the line don't.
Please could you do a video like this on the SP 606, there’s literally nothing on RUclips about it, either way love your videos keep it up!!!
I've got this video for now. I plan to do another one soon.

you should do an episode 0 on the Roland MS-1. I believe it's like a precursor to the SPs.

Will you still be mostly constructing your beats on the MPC?
@@MattGreerMusic yes. The MPC mainly for the sequencing, sampling, and slicing.
@@adriannunez8868 I'd go for the 404sx. It has more effects and sampling time. It's great for processing sounds before bouncing them to a MPC.

Hello, how can I hear the 202?? I have one now but can't hear what's on it 😢
@@bigdenver7325 Do you have a memory card? Are you certain there are samples already on the unit or have they all been deleted off?
Does it support MIDI Sample Dump to transfer samples to and from a computer for storage?
No unfortunately it doesn't support anything like that. It only has midi in too.
@@MattGreerMusic oh that’s right, only the MIDI in port
Do you know of any cheap chromatic sampler that can be plaied with a keyboard?
Casio SK-1/SK-5 are probably the cheapest options although prices on those seem to be going up lately.

My sp 202 has a hiss noise when recording on hifi or standard how come your doesn't ?
