Aikman “we all sacrificed something (players) to be good, but the two guys leading the organization never did, and they were the ones telling us to do it. That’s the part that really bothers me” Well said Troy
He layed it out. . basically.. Jimmy wanted to fish...he was leaving Dallas anyways. Whether him and Jerry got along or not and the issues didn't pop up until after the Superbowl win .. Jimmy has said , he and Jerry worked together on building the team
Like how egotistical do you need to be to actually do that though. I feel like 99% of people would just swallow it and let him stay whatever differences they had.
99% of people on social media believe media and lies about what happened between the two and swallow that up ..have you ever watched the Jimmy Johnson documentary ???
I’m not a Dallas fan but I truly believe that if Jerry just kept his ego in check and stayed on the administrative side and let Jimmy coach and stay on, the Cowboys would have probably been the first team to three-peat. And I agree with Troy they would have been a juggernaut for a very long time. I wonder if Jerry regrets making Jimmy leave.
Out of all that you came away with Jerry lol it was both of them , Jimmy really had the big head at that time. The players even said it and if you’re the owner, yes he wasn’t Perfect but it’s his house and he pays the bills and jimmy’s salary so it’s more on Jimmy
ABSOLUTELY NOT!! It’s 100% on Jerry. Jimmy NEVER EVER attempted to take credit for Jerry’s business decisions!! Jerry CONSTANTLY undermined Jerry and tried to take credit for SEVERAL of Jimmy’s trades he had ZERO to do with!! Jerry should have SHUT HIS MOUTH and kept signing the checks. Did you ever hear Jimmy try to take credit for Jerry’s PSLs, the Pepsi deal, the Nike deal, his marketing or the FOX deal? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! If anyone’s to blame it’s JERRY!! Signing Deion was HORRIBLE for the Cowboys I’ll take the 35 players we lost over Deion’s 35 million dollar contract ANY DAY!! Dallas won TWO Super Bowls WITHOUT Deion and it would have been AT LEAST 4!!!
Exactly. No one thinks Jimmy was a saint, but it's Jerry who became highly envious of the spotlight that Jimmy had. Jerry publicly admitted "I wanted to be in on that, making the draft picks, the trades," etc. (something very much like that comment). Well, Jerry, you got that chance since you're the owner. And now we've seen more than a quarter century of basic ineptitude, where the 'Boys--a once very proud franchise that made the playoffs regularly and then some--haven't won more than even a wild-card game in all that time.
@donaldwhite369 You can say all you want about it being Jerry's "house, he pays the bills, etc." but his #1 responsibility was to do whatever was necessary to produce a championship caliber team & MAINTAIN IT, but Jerry didn't. The Cowboys had the most formidable team in the early 1990s and Jerry wrecked it.
Jimmy Johnson's eye for talent after the Herschel Walker trade is what made that dynasty in the 1990's, and you'll never see a trade like that again. The Cowboys could rotate four defensive linemen and four offensive linemen and they keep fresh legs in all day. And some may agree or disagree but the 1992 Dallas Cowboys was the best roster in Cowboy history.
Actually the players that rotated in were. Kevin Gogan, Rookie Eric Williams, Frank Cornish, And long snapper Dale Hellestre. These players saw action to rest starters.
Actually Erik Williams was NOT a rookie in 1992 that was the year he became a full time starter. Kevin Gogan lost his starting job in 1992 and only came in in short yardage plays or the goal line as a tight end. Cornish and Hellestrae were both back up centers who rarely saw time. Hellestrae doubled as the long snapper. While the defensive line rotated linemen every few downs the same could not be said fir the offensive line. John Gesek was the starter in 1992 at RG who lost the job to Gogan in 1993 and started at Center for Stepnoski. They were good backups but didn’t see much time.
Cornish got a-lot of playing time and since your on U-Tube watch some of the 1992 games. And even Emmitt Smith said when he gave his Hall Of Fame Speech. He gave a very special thanks to Frank Cornish.
@@joshuahendricks7701For 28 years Jerry watched Rome burn while he callously treated the team like an ATM with his “got five?” t-shirts and 90’s SB throw back merch.
Agreed!! Jerry Jones is an arrogant fool. That 90s Cowboys team was the greatest collection of talent in NFL history. People don’t understand how GREAT that team was. There were only a few free agents Dallas ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT afford to lose. Jerry STUPIDLY cut Jimmy Smith on the eve of camp when he was going to be the starter in 1994 when he tried to trade Harper to move up to get McGinest in the draft. The trade fell through when New England selected McGinest the pick before. Yet Jerry tries to get Smith to take a pay cut when he’s still on his rookie second round deal after he signs CRACK BOY Cory Fleming who the 40 Whiners didn’t have the league required money to sign after they CHEATED on the 1994 Salary Cap. Jerry cuts Jimmy and gives Fleming his number. Smith was dubbed “Silk” in practice because he was so smooth. Jimmy Johnson knew what he had in Smith he gave up the value of a first round pick with Cleveland to move up and take Smith the pick after Woodson in 1992. Smith was stuck behind two first round picks for good reason. He led the Cowboys in receiving in the preseason in 1993. He had an emergency appendectomy and almost died on the operating table. It occurred in practice. Jerry tried not to pay him because he said it was a non football injury. Jimmy filed a grievance and won. Jerry held a grudge against him. Jerry held a grudge against him as well because Jimmy Johnson never consulted him on the trade. Can you imagine Dallas GETS BETTER on offense after Harper leaves with Jimmy Smith a LEGIT HOFER on the other side of Irvin? The tale of the tape Fleming 8 career catches for 63 yards. Smith 862 catches for 12,227 yards. Absolutely INFURIATING to think about!!
As a 49 year old lifelong diehard Eagles fan who had a significant part of my teenage years ruined by the Dallas Cowboys, I take no pleasure in saying the 92 and 93 cowboys were easily the most dominant team in my lifetime. No holes anywhere. Had that team stuck together with Jimmy Johnson, there is no doubt my mind they would’ve won 5+ Super Bowls in the 90s.
54 year-old Giants fan here, and you could not have said it better. Jerry was too much of an egomaniac to keep Jimmy, and it has benefited us both, Lol. Looking forward to being competitive again with your team, Alexandria. Good luck this season!
And what made the Cowboys the GREATEST OF ALL TIME was playing against the Eagles, Giants and Redskins. That was THE GREATEST DIVISION IN NFL HISTORY PERIOD!! The Cowboys were the Bulls of the NFL and the Eagles were their Pistons!! They had lost 8 straight games to the Eagles and 6 straight to the Giants before they finally beat them both in 1991. That 1991 Eagles defense was TOP THREE of all time. Dallas gave up 11 sacks to Reggie White, Jerome Brown and Clyde Simmons that first game. They won the second in 1991 with a heavy dose of Emmitt with Steve Beuerlein at the helm. That’s what made Dallas GREAT!! Only free Agency and JERRY JONES EGO destroyed them and the NFC East. THE GREATEST DIVISION IN NFL HISTORY that won 7 of 10 Super Bowls from 1986-1995 and IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN 8!!!
Jerry Jones wife said Jerry Jones cannot leave well enough alone. Jerry Jones needs to sell the Dallas Cowboys! He does not deserve a fan base like the Dallas Cowboys. Tex Schram and Tom Landry had 30 years of winning records, 5 Super bowl appearances, and 2 Superbowl wins. Jerry Jones 25 years of losing and no Superbowls. Oh thanks Mr Jones!! The three Superbowl wins belong to Jimmy Johnson! Thanks fired employee Jimmy Johnson leader of men!
Jerry jones will never sell the team so just let those thoughts go brother. And his son is taking over when he dies. Maybe not winning but as far as popularity and fan base, like it or not, is because of Jerry
Jerry for 25 years has put a competitive team on the field nearly all of them. Also kept the stadium packed nearly 365 days a year. He was also smart enough to get the city of Arlington to pay for 49% of the new stadium without paying back any of the profits!!!! Ya Jerry is sooo dumb! Lol I wish I could learn something from that dumb guy that also btw has 3 super bowl rings!
With arguably the best offensive line in the history of the NFL, that squad could have easily been in the thick of things for another 5 years if the breakup didn't happen. They were mauling the best defensive lines in the game like they were pushovers.
The Great Wall. Larry Allen chasing down Saints LB Mark Field after an Aikman interception. Dan Dierdorf and Frank Gifford simultaneously saying Larry Allen. Just as great as one of my favorite Cowboys Randy White chasing down an Eagles WR. Both plays were from a standing position and from behind. Larry Allen was probably the strongest player that played in the NFL history.
Larry Allen was definitely the strongest player in NFL history. He benched 760 lbs. That line was great but only Allen is in the HOF!! The Raiders line of the 70s had FIVE HOFers.
@@joshuahendricks7701 Unfortunately, Nate Newton sullied his career with criminal activity, I think Mark Stepnoski hurt his chances when he went to Houston (a mediocre team) and wasn't talked about as much. Of course, Tuinei dying of drug overdose probably hurt his chances for the hall, too. In my mind, he's the one who should be in the hall -- started with the Cowboys as a DT, moved to center, guard, tackle and back to defense as the organization needed him. Stayed healthy for 12-15 seasons. A great player.
Newton didn’t get caught until after he retired. Most of the Cowboys were up to no good after Jimmy left. Tuinei while a good player didn’t make the Pro Bowl until his twelfth year. He was done by 1997. Adams was a good replacement. I think Newton and Stepnoski both make the Hall if Dallas wins a couple more Superbowls. Newton made 6 straight pro bowls as did Stepnoski although three were with Houston where he NEVER should have been. Jimmy Smith also makes the Hall playing on the other side of Irvin. Johnson NEVER EVER cuts him like Jerrah did in 1994 based on a petty grudge. That Dallas team was without a doubt THE GREATEST TEAM OF ALL TIME!! Jimmy gave up the value of a first round pick in a trade with Cleveland to move up and take Jimmy Smith the pick after Woodson in 1992. He was stuck behind Harper for good reason but led Dallas in receiving during the preseason two years in a row. Can you imagine Dallas GETS BETTER on offense after Harper leaves in 1995 with a legit HOFer on the other side of Irvin. I’ll take Smith over Cory Fleming, Deion Sanders, Anthony Miller, Raghib Ismail, Joey Galloway, Billy Davis, Terry Glenn and any of the rest of the Plethora of receivers Jerry WASTED picks on at that spot after he STUPIDLY cut Jimmy.
Troy, you're 100% right. I believe that 90's Cowboys Team would have won five 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 Super Bowls in a Row if they would have stayed intact with Jimmy Johnson! The Cowboys were the Patriots before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Except, the Patriots didn't have an Egotistical Owner, that's the only difference. The Patriots had an egotistical Head Coach but not both. The Patriots owner just wants to win. That wasn't the case with the Cowboys Owner. The Cowboys owner not only want to own the Team, he also wants to be the CEO, GM, Head Coach and Bobby Busche aka. "The Waterboy". After firing Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones said he could find 500 Coaches to Coach the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. Well, it's almost been 500 Coaches and 27 years later and the Dallas Cowboys hasn't reach the Championship Game in 27 years, going on 28. Jerry Jones was HIGH when he made that statement after Firing a Two Time Super Bowl 🏆🏆 winning Head Coach! And the Super Bowl they won with Barry Switzer is Jimmy Johnson Super Bowl, Barry Switzer was just there to accept the Trophy 🏆.
I think Aikman's career was also shortened by the NFL tradition of the worst teams getting the best quarterbacks, due to draft position. Aikman took a lot of hits and sustained a lot of concussions, before that offensive line - maybe the best in NFL history - was assembled.
Only Jim Plunkett in his first 2 years took more hits than Troy in his first two. Plunkett had to sit for a few years after that just to get his brain unscrambled.
they win 5 if he stays. The only team stopping them was the Niners. Im a Cowboys fan, have been for 40 years, and they were just a machine on both sides of the ball. Maybe the most complete team from a dynasty perspective of all time
Dallas OWNED the 40 Whiners. Only the NFL allowing them to CHEAT on the 1994 Salary Cap STEAL half of the 1993 NFC Pro Bowl roster including Ken Norton, FIVE HORRIBLE CALLS in that championship game and Jerry Jones ego ended that rivalry 5 years early!! Like Eric Davis said about 1993“Dallas was a machine if we played them 10 times MAYBE we win ONE”!!
Note to Joe and Troy: we who grew up in Dallas and enjoyed the Murchison and even the Bright ownership years, the drama imposed on us by Jerry Jones is more a pain than a pleasure. Super Bowls included.
Troy won 90 games in the 90's the most ever for QB and that's with all those injuries he suffered. Still he was right the Cowboys would have been knocking on the door playing the Green Bay Packers in 96 if they had beaten Carolina. It's just the lack of discipline, the salary cap, free agency, along with bad drafting killed the Cowboys. The Packers finally got over the hump and the Broncos with Terrell Davis were a force. In 1998, the Broncos and the Cowboys played each other the Broncos just tore up the Cowboys with Terrell Davis showing how the Broncos were the better team and they were. The Broncos won the Super Bowl and went back to back in 97 and 98.
It's very possible Deion Sanders comes to Dallas instead of San Fran in 94. That got Niners over the hump. Possibly Dallas gets homefield rather than Niners that year but who knows. No doubt, Cowboys were better with Jimmy than Barry Switzer. Switzer took his foot off the gas when he got there. Jimmy didn't.
"It's just the lack of discipline, the salary cap, free agency, along with bad drafting killed the Cowboys." I agree. Jimmy leaving also killed them. Jerry not keeping Jimmy around killed them. We will never know how good they could've been.
The lack of discipline was huge, and Troy did NOT like Switzer because of that. Switzer just let guys do whatever they wanted. They only won that 3rd SB because of the talent they had on that team. I really believe they would've won 4, maybe 5 straight with Jimmy.
@@redleader3394 Jimmy was looking for a way out. He's admitted to that. It wasn't all Jerry. Jimmy said he was an ass too. Their relationship got careless.
Signing Deion was THE WORST thing the Cowboys did after firing Jimmy. They lost 35 players because of it. I’ll take those players over Deion and his 35 million dollar contract ANY DAY!! Jerry and his son Stephen almost came to blows after Jerry told him he’d offered Deion 35 million. Stephen was in charge of cap compliance and knew it would gut their roster. Dallas won TWO Super Bowls WITHOUT Deion and it would have been FOUR!!!
@ 0:25 ... an image is worth a thousand words... I remember watching these victory celebrations LIVE and wondering "why is that weird guy stepping in and taking all the joy away from the coaches and players. Jones even said "anyone could've coached that team to a Super Bowl victory," while Johnson was still coach. Jones thought he was the reason... and anyone could've owned that team when they won those Super Bowls.
I love listening to Troy Aikman talk about football in general, he has great perspective and wisdom and I'm saying that as someone that HATES the Cowboys. I agree with his point on Brady and Belichick people always want to pin all the credit on 1 person and just need to understand it doesn't work like that, they are both responsible for their success and Brady wouldn't have turned into the Brady we knew towards the end of his career if it wasn't for Belichick in the beginning of his career.
My wife is from Dallas and a huge fan, I am from NE. She has been telling me this same story for years, how much more winning they would have had if Jimmy was the coach.
The thing is Jimmy was just as guilty as Jerry not letting go their egos. Jimmy putting out there and the chance of going to Jacksonville. They just couldn't share the spotlight and both know they messed it up especially Jerry deep down. That's why with the Patriots with Brady, Belichick, and Robert Kraft all they worried about was winning and they did it for 20 years. It worked that well, they left their egos at the door and focused on the team and winning. It lasted all those years and for the Cowboys I know one thing as fan that if Jimmy had stayed the next year the Cowboys would not have gone down 21-0 to the 49ers in the NFC championship after the first 3 possessions.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!! Furthermore Erik Williams NEVER EVER stays out until 3 am drinking and runs into a retaining wall at 75 mph. He plays the first game Larry Allen plays the whole season at RG and Dallas runs SF out of their stadium at home. Dallas also NEVER spots San Fran 21 points in the first seven minutes Jimmy DID NOT TOLERATE turnovers. Ken Norton also doesn’t leave Dallas if Jimmy stays. Jimmy also NEVER cuts Jimmy Smith for crack boy Cory Fleming and NEVER EVER EVER gifts the 40 Whiners William Floyd and Tyronne Drakeford for that BUST Shante Carver. Dallas wins by AT LEAST 21 points under Jimmy.
The former Cowboys still act like if Jimmy had stayed they win like 6 in a row.. From 92-96 they won 3 SB's and were in the NFL Champ game in 94. They lost in the divisional round in 96. By 96 Favre and the Packers were now great going to 2 straight Superbowls and of course the Elway/Davis Broncos winning 2 in a row 97 and 98. But they keep deluding themselves into thinking Jimmy would have meant more rings.
Anyone DELUSIONAL ENOUGH to pretend they wouldn’t have doesn’t know football. San Fran CHEATED on the 1994 Salary Cap and STOLE half of the 1993 NFC Pro Bowl roster all while magically trimming 20.4 million off of their cap. They STOLE Tim McDonald, Deion Sanders, Rickey Jackson, Richard Dent, Toi Cook, Bart Oates, Ed McCaffrey, Ken Norton and Gary Plummer then we’re even able to re sign Tim Harris who never should have left. They STOLE THEM WITHOUT COMPENSATION then traded their players FOR COMPENSATION cut some of their stars and then Jerry Jones gifted them William Floyd and Tyronne Drakeford for that BUST Shante Carver. The 90s Cowboys were THE GREATEST TEAM IN NFL HISTORY PERIOD END OF STORY and it isn’t even close!! ANY DYNASTY FROM THE PAST ABSOLUTELY ANNIHILATES THE SORRY MONEYBALL PATRIOTS!! The rest of the league never “caught up” to the Cowboys!! They just STOLE 45 players of their 53 man roster so go sell your DELUSIONAL FANTASY to someone else!! I know more about the NFL than you could ever learn in this LIFETIME!!!
Dallas OWNED SAN FRANS ASS in the 1990s. You can keep deluding yourself into PRETENDING the 40 WHINERS built ANYTHING in 1994!! They STOLE one by CHEATING on the salary cap and mortgaged their future in the process!!
Dallas instantly stopped drafting well the day Johnson left…of course they dropped off. Switzer, Gailey, Campo…cmon man. Those other teams got better, but the Cowboys clearly dropped off.
As a Generation Xer, growing up in Dallas and having to endure those bad Landry years and seeing the success of the 90's Cowboys...we really had it all...
Has a lifelong Cowboys fan starting as a kid watching Roger and Tony. We could have at least had a taste of success in the early 80’s. Danny White got robbed of a chance to go to the Superbowl by the 49ers. After that it was downhill until the Vikings came along and gave us a king’s ransom for Walker. That changed the course for the Cowboys.

I'm a raider fan but my good buddy is a cowboy die hard. I will never forget the day it happened... He called me on the phone crying. Again remember die hard Cowboys fan. He still hasn't gotten over that to this day. We talk about it a few times every football season in the what it could have been. If you weren't present during that time you just won't understand how good they really were with Jimmy.
Even though I'm a Redskins Fan until I die, I have a ton of respect for Troy Aikman. Personally I think the Lavar Arrington hit on Troy when he was trying to run out of bounds, is what made Troy retire.
@@joshuahendricks7701 You better check again. That Arrington hit messed Troy up bad. His brain was in a fog for months after that hit. That's what made him retire.
YOU need to check again Troy Aikman himself said that had ZERO to do with it. Watch his a football life and get back to me when you know what you’re talking about!!!
@@joshuahendricks7701 Lol, YOU NEED TO CHECK AGAIN. A Football Life. 🤣😂🤣 You mean a show that glorifies stories. Naaa, I CHECK STATS. Troy Aikman was knocked out of football games, 3 times with CONCUSSIONS, in the 2000 season. December 10 2000. Arraington knocked him out. THAT WAS HIS LAST GAME EVER. He did not play on DEC 17 2000. The next game against the Giants. Kerry Collins was the QB. He did not play on December 25 against the Titans the final game of that season. Troy Aikman did not play in the 2001 season. BYE BYE. 😂🤣😂
Hilarious LAUGHING BOY!! Troy Aikman has said REPEATEDLY PUBLICLY that his concussions had ZERO to do with his retirement!! I’ll take HIS WORD over your DELUSIONAL FANTASIES ANY DAY!! I remember the play he got knocked out on. HE ABSOLUTELY DID NOT HAVE THREE CONCUSSIONS IN 200!! He missed three games FROM ONE!! That’s a different story. I really really agree with Troy! When they went to Super Bowl 30 they were still running on Jimmy Johnsons coaching and maybe a little of Barry Switzer and then it went to hell in a handbag! Hopefully with Jimmy going into the ring of honor will change everything about this team. Lets bring back the glory days! May Cowboy Nation rise and shine. Go Cowboys. Americas team. DC4L
Troy Aikman was the coach of that 1995 team. They were running on what was left of Jimmy’s talent on the roster. What are BARRYs initials?? B.S. and that’s what he was!!
The vast, vast majority of people know ....EGO...which sadly demands credit at all cost......has cost and will continue to cost or prevent Dallas from winning a Superbowl. Mr Jones needs to have control.
I've been a die hard cowboy,s fan for 30 yrs. And Jerry Jones is the worst thing to happen to this organization. What I'd give to have Jimmy back. I will keep pulling for Dem Boys til I die but dear Lord we need a new owner.
Chris....... I have been a Giants fan for 46 years, and in all honesty you may be changing your mind soon. Your team looks like it could do some damage in 2023. I believe that McCarthy is an excellent coach, and you guys have some studs on both sides of the ball.
@@paulmysliborski4832 well we do have a great team. Just seems like the last few seasons we get right to the play offs then go belly up. But I'm not much jumping on the band wagon I will pull for them till I die. Thanks n good luck with your team as well friend
My take was Jimmy made the moves to bring in his players then discovers at some point that Jerry has made news conferences saying HE made these moves , and this chapped Jimmy's ass to no end . Who know's what else mite have been done or said behind the scenes that got under Jimmy's skin before that we will never know but to many red flags & he just couldn't work with Jerry anymore .
I’ve read it. Jimmy NEVER EVER tried to take credit for Jerry’s business decisions Jerry OFTEN tried to take credit for Jimmy’s trades. THAT is what ended the relationship!!!
I'm a 49ers fan and agree, with Jimmy they would've have won at least one more title.....I'm thinking 4-5 titles total with Jimmy.....and they would have been a better team overall with him.....they had something missing without him....their 3rd title didn't have the same dominance they had in the past.
I think so too they became snakebit against the 49ers once Jimmy left they were fortunate during the 3rd title run that Green Bay knocked off the Niners because they would have probably got boatraced again against San Francisco.
I hate Dallas more than anyone, but I 100% agree with everything Troy said. The thing that ruined that team after Jimmy was poor drafting. They never replaced Harper, Novajeck, Haley, Maryland. They wasted every 1st Rd pick on players like Carver & Pittman
Troy put it straight foward. he loved it first hand. Jimmy Johnson was an innovator and was able to surround himself with winning coaching staff and had the best eye for talent as well as a love for the game. it was a sad day when he left cowboys. I have been a Cowboy fan through thick and thin for over 60 yrs. Jones has the lifetime karma of firing Tom Landry in rhe manner he did. His controlling attitude and being always in the spotlight shows day in day out. Jones turned the value of the cowboys to unbelievable Dollar amounts . The Dallas Cowboy name has been built on the backs of so many great players coaches and staff. I hold my head up won or loose.I don't have to like it. The what ifs and What the hell are so much in me as well. The Dallas Cowboys will always be bigger than Mr Jones.Saddle up Dallas thank you for the Football of the Past,Present and future of the Game.
I'm no Cowboys fan at all. But to me Jimmy Johnson was one of the best Football coaches that ever coached ! I believe he was better the Bill B. In New England, because as soon as Tom Brady left its was never the same. Im a Texans fan , but to this day, I never seen a coach so intense and new how to get the most put of his players. If Jerry Jones stayed out of the way, they could have won 5 Superbowls. In my opinion. He was awesome!!!
What ruined the Cowboys lack of winning over the past 30 years is Jerry Jones as GM Jerry Jones draft history is worst ever and his handling of the salary cap and players salary is a NFL worst $100 million for Zeke who career rushing mark is 40th all time Cowboys lost Amari Cooper because of Zeke contract Jerry Jones only concern now is team value.
Troy is my alltime favorite quarterback. Dude had the IT factor. Didn't take any bullshit from any player, always demanded your best and focus. It's a damn shame Dallas didnt play in or win more SB's during his time.
When Aikman mentioned how him, Smith and Irvin made sacrifices for the benefit of the team, someone should have told that to the Steelers Killer Bs, cause ego was exactly what brought the downfall of one of the best offenses in the early 2010s. FYI, I'm a Ravens fan, I had to see my team get destroyed by this offense featuring Roethelisberger, Bell, Brown, and an underrated offensive line unit. I don't like the Steelers, but I certainly respect what they have done to stay competitive, and yes, I do believe that had all 3 men kept their pride in check, "Stairway to Seven" could have been a reality.
As a Skins lifer - our jaws hit the floor as much as any Cowboys fan - but in much different ways I assure you. We all said "Please Lord, keep Jerry Jones around a long time if for no other reason than the NFC East" And Dallas has been cursed since that day. But isn't it strange? Kind of what they did to Jordan and Pippen and the Bulls - In the middle of building the absolute model of perfection, shut down construction and burn it ~ But, that's the way of billionaires and their ego.
Yep, playing In the NFC East was what made the Cowboys what they were. People forget how GREAT that division was. From 1986-1995 the NFC East won 7 of 10 Super Bowls and it should have been 8. Dallas always seemed to squeeze one out against Washington no matter how bad they were but they hadn’t beaten Philly in 4 years or New York in three years before they broke that streak in 1991. That division was a meat grinder. That’s why when free Agency hit every team raised the NFC East. The NFC East was like the Pistons to the Cowboys Bulls that level of competition is what made them what they were.
The biggest factor in ‘94 was the 49ers getting Deion. Than that reversed in ‘95. So the question is would Jimmy had been enough in ‘94 to withstand Deion on the Niners and beat them. And would Deion had been signed by the Cowboys in ‘95 with Johnson as coach whether winning in ‘94 or not?
Jerry was and still is the problem with everything wrong with my Cowboys, Jerry wanted to do back then just what he's doing now, give all the interviews, give injury report, coach the damn team and be the GM, he doesn't want anyone getting the spot light but him, this is what we're dealing here, a ego maniac. I been a fan since 1965, I love my Boys but I can't stand this owner.
The most common and strongly held opinion of almost all the Cowboy fans. Jerry has ruined the image of the Dallas Cowboys. Anytime I hear him speak on the radio or TV,It’s an automatic tune out.
This team has been a disaster for quite some time now. I am no where invested like I use to be and still to this day not sure why I was Cowboys fan. Grew up exactly 2.8 miles from Giants stadium 😂
I will never forget watchin Cowboys playing preseason game in Mexico City & Barry Switzer was Coaching , & Jerry Jones strutted up to coach Switzer & wanted to BS with Switzer and coach Switzer pointed the way to go to get the the hell out of there. Classic
In my opinion especially the first one that was the greatest team ever put together on the field Certainly one of the top five And the first one was definitely the best Super Bowls to watch ever
I'm sorry to tell you, the Dallas Cowboys may never win another Super Bowl in your lifetime. They have the Browns curse. In 1963, the Browns fired the best coach in Football at the time, Paul Brown, because Art Model let his EGO get in the way of winning. They won another championship in 64 without Paul, but with Paul's team, and that was it. In 1994, the Dallas Cowboys fired the best coach in Football at the time, Jimmy Johnson, because Jerry Jones let his EGO get in the way of winning. They won another Super Bowl in 95 without Jimmy, but with mostly Jimmy's team, and that was it. As a lifelong Browns fan I have to tell you, you might have a long wait.
I'm not a Cowboys fan but I love this topic. Jerry Jones got the job done. Jimmy Johnson stepped down and Jerry Jones hired Barry Switzer who won a SB in year two. Securing a Dynasty. 3 in 4 years.
I don't know how much Jimmy had to do with the break-up, but from my distant perch, it looked like Jerry just couldn't stand the fact that Jimmy was getting all the credit, and the fact that he deserved all the credit. Jerry's main contribution was hiring Jimmy.
"I would've been regarded much differently than I am now"...Dude, what nonsense. I can't think of anyone who would think poorly of Aikman as a QB. In the same light as TB? Maybe not, but as he points out, TB had Belichek. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what you do on the field. It's off the field that really counts. And in that light, every bit as great as TB or anyone else.
Unfortunately it’s people out there who says Troy was overrated. Like you said he wasn’t a Tom Brady but he was the perfect qb for that team. And a qb who wins 3 superbowls can never be overrated. We see a team today like the Niners who have basically everything but have won nothing because they’ve had a qb problem holding them back from winning it all. When you look at a situation like that I just don’t understand when people say “any qb could have won with that team” yeah maybe won some games but winning multiple superbowls? You gotta be a different kind of qb for that
He was BETTER THAN BRADY!! He just didn’t play in a TWO TOUCH CANDY ASS NFL where defense has been outlawed!! The NFL has been HOT GARBAGE for the past 25 years!!
I disliked Dallas but they were a very good team during Johnson years. I was so envious of the triplets and I wished my team had a trio like that. I was happy when Dallas self-destructed but looking back, it's really sad to see such a talented team squander that ability.
Agreed. The Cowboys would have established a Jimmy Johnson dynasty. Just like if Kobe and Shaq could have gotten along, and a lot of other groups, couples, teams.
It wouldn't be the first time that a duo with big personalities would split up because of ego. But, there you have it, one of the biggest "What ifs?" in the NFL.
1994 was the Niners year no matter what they got Ken Norton Jr, Gary Plummer, Tim Mcdonald, Deion Sanders, William Floyd, Bart Oates etc, meanwhile Cowboys lost Erik Williams for year even with Jimmy Johnson as coach it wouldve been hard to beat Niners in 1994.
San Fran was great in 1994, but Dallas took their foot off the gas and relied on talent over discipline, and it showed in that game. But, they almost made the comeback on that 49ers team. The universe was not on Dallas' side that Sunday.
Under Jimmy A Ken Norton NEVER leaves and B. Erik Williams NEVER stays out until 3 am drinking and runs into a retaining wall at 75 MPH he plays in BOTH GAMES and the Championship is in Dallas AGAIN!!
A Major League Owner, doesn’t matter which sport, must toe a fine line between him and his head coach. Jerry is also the GM. That in itself complicates matters. Egos will always play a role and ultimately it’s the Owners team. But be ready of the consequences of the Owners decisions. In this case, it costed the Cowboys a decade long dynasty.
Troy makes a great point. He is the least regarded (maybe Terry Bradshaw can make an argument) multi Super Bowl winning qb there is. You never hear his name come up when ppl mention Montana, Elway, and Marino in that era. They just don't, and they should. Personally, I think Troy could hang w/ any of those fellas, except maybe Montana. He's a notch below Montana. But Jimmy Johnson handpicked him for a reason.
45 year cowboy fan here and yes we would have. Everyone knew it was either Dallas or sf back then with Dallas with the edge. Remember Dallas was 10 points behind from the get go and almost came back in 95 with Switzer.
Aikman “we all sacrificed something (players) to be good, but the two guys leading the organization never did, and they were the ones telling us to do it. That’s the part that really bothers me”
Well said Troy
That part hit hard
He was right...
Hell of a statement right there
He layed it out. . basically.. Jimmy wanted to fish...he was leaving Dallas anyways. Whether him and Jerry got along or not and the issues didn't pop up until after the Superbowl win .. Jimmy has said , he and Jerry worked together on building the team
💯
" You don't fire your coach when you are winning superbowls"
Jerry Jones : "Hold My Beer "
Like how egotistical do you need to be to actually do that though. I feel like 99% of people would just swallow it and let him stay whatever differences they had.
99% of people on social media believe media and lies about what happened between the two and swallow that up ..have you ever watched the Jimmy Johnson documentary ???
Troy’s the man. Wellspoken, a champion, totally legit.
Green Bay Packers are the league's history only 3 peat. People seem to forget the Superbowl Championship is also referred to the NFL Championship.
Niner fans would definitely agree
The Cowboys NEVER rotated their offensive lineman. They did rotate their defensive lineman.
Jerry and jimmy had the football world in their palms of their hands. They could have won at least five superbowls if not more. We will never know.
Jerry did. Jimmy CREATED that roste!r!! Jerry DESTROYED it!!!
I appreciate reading comments like this.
Did it shock you when that team came apart?
The jimmy johnson curse on the cowboys is alive and well. I love it. Good job jerry
And now he’s in their ring of honor. Watch the bastards win the super bowl this year.
@@denimchicken104 yeah, yuck.
Aikman is like the kid torn between both parents after a divorce.
Jerry Jones destroyed the future of the cowboys , not one sniff of a SB in 29, 30 years !! Smh
As a long time suffering Cowboy's fan, am waiting for the day he is no longer among us.
It was actually Darion Conner he chased down in 1994.
Watching Switzer coach was like watching the tail wag the dog!
Troy was being respectful and modest. He knows the Cowboys would have DOMINATED the league like no other team for some YEARS. More than NE.
0:53 Troy SPITTING THE TRUTH about Jimmy and Jerry.
I hate to think about the “ what if” As a fan it’s still haunting. Two huge egos got in the way.
Note to Joe and Troy: we who grew up in Dallas and enjoyed the Murchison and even the Bright ownership years, the drama imposed on us by Jerry Jones is more a pain than a pleasure. Super Bowls included.
Love em or hate em, no question they had one of, if not the best, rosters ever assembled. That was a machine!
“Jimmy wanted to go fish” 😂😂😂
Johnson was the Winner 🏆, just look at how many Fish 🐟 he has caught, since then 😂😂😂
In a clash of egos, there are no winners. It’s that simple.
They were about to be the patriots of the 90's, Real talk. And I'm not even a cowboys fan.
He's saying Jimmy wouldn't have called Off Tackle Left 3 times in a row at his own 30 in the winter in Philadelphia.
Balance of ego, humility, talent, wisdom part of great people and their success. Sustainability may be the toughest accomplishment of all.
My wife is from Dallas and a huge fan, I am from NE. She has been telling me this same story for years, how much more winning they would have had if Jimmy was the coach.
The only place for Jerry's "bust" in the HOF is the men's room.
Great interview much aided by Troy's candor
Yeah, Troy said all that champ
@@howdydo5760 I agree.
That 1994 season NFC Championship would have been in Dallas and not San Francisco if Jimmy had been the coach.

No discipline with Switzer. I think that was the biggest thing missing.
J jones doesn’t know how to run/coach a team. He’s why they are always losing.
Always losing…?!😮
Troy would have been the Goat had Jimmy stayed
They weren't young they were both in their 50s
I'm no Cowboys fan at all. But to me Jimmy Johnson was one of the best Football coaches that ever coached ! I believe he was better the Bill B. In New England, because as soon as Tom Brady left its was never the same. Im a Texans fan , but to this day, I never seen a coach so intense and new how to get the most put of his players. If Jerry Jones stayed out of the way, they could have won 5 Superbowls. In my opinion. He was awesome!!!
What ruined the Cowboys lack of winning over the past 30 years is Jerry Jones as GM
Jerry Jones draft history is worst ever and his handling of the salary cap and players salary is a NFL worst
$100 million for Zeke who career rushing mark is 40th all time Cowboys lost Amari Cooper because of Zeke contract
Jerry Jones only concern now is team value.
Troy is my alltime favorite quarterback. Dude had the IT factor. Didn't take any bullshit from any player, always demanded your best and focus. It's a damn shame Dallas didnt play in or win more SB's during his time.
Jerry Jones’s ego is what couldn’t let Jimmy still run the team and it shows why they have been irrelevant since 1995.
I fully expected John to stay in Dallas for at least 15 years and dominated in that time. They were so good they still won despite the turmoil.
Well put, Troy!
I agree. I’m not a cowboys fan but parting ways with Jimmy Johnson would’ve been equivalent to the Patriots parting ways with Belichick in 2009…
Dallas would line up on the ball, and say here we come try and stop us. Nobody could. It was poetry in motion.
THE GREATEST DIVISION IN NFL HISTORY BAR NONE!!
Who are the Skins 😮😮😮
The biggest factor in ‘94 was the 49ers getting Deion. Than that reversed in ‘95. So the question is would Jimmy had been enough in ‘94 to withstand Deion on the Niners and beat them. And would Deion had been signed by the Cowboys in ‘95 with Johnson as coach whether winning in ‘94 or not?
I agree with you Troy 💯 Dallas Cowboys would have Won many games and Super Bowl 🏈 God bless You 🙏 and Happy new Year 🎉
Jerry was and still is the problem with everything wrong with my Cowboys, Jerry wanted to do back then just what he's doing now, give all the interviews, give injury report, coach the damn team and be the GM, he doesn't want anyone getting the spot light but him, this is what we're dealing here, a ego maniac. I been a fan since 1965, I love my Boys but I can't stand this owner.
Well said
The most common and strongly held opinion of almost all the Cowboy fans.
As a diehard NY Giants fan, I can appreciate that era of football under the Cowboys. They were box office. America’s team…
Jerry is the issue your an owner sit your ass down and if you look the great Parcells couldn’t deal with the ego of Jerry jones either
I will never forget watchin Cowboys playing preseason game in Mexico City & Barry Switzer was Coaching , & Jerry Jones strutted up to coach Switzer & wanted to BS with Switzer and coach Switzer pointed the way to go to get the the hell out of there. Classic
Man if Jerry Jones didn’t have an ego
In my opinion especially the first one that was the greatest team ever put together on the field Certainly one of the top five And the first one was definitely the best Super Bowls to watch ever
Lotta great teams. Colts, Pittsburgh, even the Giants w YA Tittle, Frank et al
Aikman should be respectful, be respectful to Barry Switzer for the great job he did in Dallas.
This had to be the best day of Joe Bucks life.
Why?
2:03
That 92 team in my opinion was the youngest fastest deepest team in modern superbowl era
Not sure about all that… and of course we will never know
I'm not a Cowboys fan but I love this topic. Jerry Jones got the job done. Jimmy Johnson stepped down and Jerry Jones hired Barry Switzer who won a SB in year two. Securing a Dynasty. 3 in 4 years.
💯 percent spot on correct!
I don't know how much Jimmy had to do with the break-up, but from my distant perch, it looked like Jerry just couldn't stand the fact that Jimmy was getting all the credit, and the fact that he deserved all the credit. Jerry's main contribution was hiring Jimmy.
Your the only Cowboy I like and respect 100%
Jerry’s the owner. Jerry’s the problem. Nothing is going to change that. End of story.
Probably two more, if he stayed.
He’s not saying the real truth…Jerry f’d it up cuz he thought he was a gm & coach. He’s neither & time has proven that.
Should have been 4 straight.
Love you brother..❤❤
Troy is a real one.
I agree with Troy. I'm glad they broke up though, man I hated the Cowboys in the 90s. They were all to me great teams though.
I hope Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson heard this. New England was able to avoid all the mistakes that were made by those 2.
You hit the nail right on the head Troy it would have been a four peat no doubt in my mind Jimmy was a king
If they hadn't let him go 49ers probably won't have won in 1994 thank you JJ😮😮😮
I’m not a cowboys fan but I totally agree with that I believe Brady was chasing the wrong Qb.
TO BE HONEST i dont think Cowboys beat those 95' Niners. If was SF's year.
45 year cowboy fan here and yes we would have. Everyone knew it was either Dallas or sf back then with Dallas with the edge. Remember Dallas was 10 points behind from the get go and almost came back in 95 with Switzer.
