ive never heard anyone sing this song as well as dave. the texture and tone of his voice, not to mention his range, was made for this. there's a reason females mainly attempt to cover, the range is insane, but of course they can't get that raspy male vocal to go with it. it has just enough grit to go with the range. and i personally love dave's phrasing, i know they wanted the guitar stabs to be short and sweet to go along with the punches during the montage of the movie and i think his phrasing suits that gritty sharp mood of the song.
i think its a lot about the simplicity. neither the guitars are overloaded, nor the vocals, still its just great and pictures the simple man, the lonely wulf, the fighter. And you know yourself how it is to be back on the street, the short choppy phrases, you have to take care on each corner. and still this song is epic. it got me up time and time again and gives power to go on. i'm thankful this song exists, its a great tool!
Daves recording is catching your soul right away, even or maybe BECAUSE of these "imperfections" (if one may call it that). The "rushing" and the short-breath-stops in the first verse, his tembre in the choruses, even the "pitchy" phrases. it goes right into your (at least into MINE) ...soul. when i listen to it acapella, it gives me goosebumps
Sorry Ken, but I think you misjudged the vocal ability of Dave. You said it seems that Dave was just reading the lyrics. But you forgot that that the song was without music. Dave sang based on the music.
The interesting back story about this track is that it is actually a “demo” that was pitched for the Rocky 3 movie but Survivor wasn’t planning to be the final artist to record it for the movie soundtrack. In the end though, the producers for the movie wanted to use the Survivor demo. So the song that we know and love and became a #1 song is actually the original demo that the band cut. I’m sure if they had known it was going to be the actual track used for the final soundtrack they would have done some other takes to get their best vocals, etc. Having said that I think it’s pretty good for just being a demo.
The demo is only used in the movie. The album version, which was recorded later, was also used for the single and the video. Watch the music video and then search “Eye of the Tiger demo” and you’ll hear a big difference. Stallone liked the energy of the demo, and that’s why it was used in the film.
Funny how yesterday on one of my road trips I got on RUclips and pulled up the album Premonition. And then I get this to show up. Love those early albums and especially Dave's voice. always dead on
This song got me into rock music and that was about 12 years ago and i still love it today, another amazing job Ken, love your work as always. keep it up man.
I think Ken is profound in pointing out where you, as a singer would want to tighten up your game to give the best possible performance while at the same time acknowledging that sometimes soul wins out over everything else. Maybe it's the less than perfect techniques that humanized this hit and made one of the biggest songs of all time. Whatever it is, it will be listened to for generations to come.
I love how the voice sounds better with the whole band. Survivor, although it had two great singers, was always a band oriented to the song, the lyrics and the vibe instead of the virtuosity of any of its members. Maybe that's why their songs are so memorable and they are one of my favorite bands of all time! I love your voice, Ken! You are great! From Argentina.
I agree. Although all the members were talented at their art (Frankie Sullivan is actually probably a bit underrated as a guitarist), it was really about the whole package for them.
Harmonies wouldn't have matched the design intent ... Rocky against the world ... one-on-one, etc. Had to be a solo vocal else it wouldn't have worked in the movie. That's why everyone remembers it being so epic!
Thank you, Ken. Another great voice analysis. I saw some concert footage of Dave and Jimi performing together shortly before Jimi's passing. It looked like mutual respect and admiration for each other. By the way, there was a mix done with the both of them doing a duet with the song, " Ever since the world began". I don't know how many times I've listened to it. I think any Survivor fan will enjoy it. Cheers from Ottawa.
All I hear is Yo Adriaaaaaan!....lol. Great song from a good movie. Sly actually heard Survivor's song "Poor Man's Son" and asked them to write something similar for "ROCKY III." " Eye Of The Tiger" was so popular Survivor was brought back to do "Burning Heart" for "Rocky IV." Great band that brings back a LOT of 80's memories.
Hearing that soulful voice the first time in 82 got me hooked into the art form that is called rock’n’roll. What a bummer it was to learn that Dave Bickler, the cool dude with the beret, had lost his voice. Enter Jimi Jamison - the voice from paradise. Survivor weren’t the biggest band. But they had two of the greatest singers of the 80s. And they also had America’s McCartney, the inimitable chord-master Jim Peterik putting those songs together.
Love the album 'Eye of the Tiger'. A lot more than the title track. The other 8 tunes are really good, and so dang catchy. Dave was awesome on the Bud Light commercials 'Real Men of Genius'. Great episode, Ken.
I'm with you on the reading! I felt the detachment until he comes up upon the chorus it then comes alive . Lucky for him they had a good producer whom made it work. Great job as always. Blessings 🤘🙏🏻🤘
Thanks for the analysis, I enjoyed it. According to the Jim Peterik interview, the demo of the song was used for the opening of Rocky III - it has some subtle differences from the final produced version. Should be able to find it on YT easily.
Even though Dave killed the recording, I always preferred Jimis version. He just had that rasp and power that took it to another level. Maybe it was a hair out of his range at the end of the night, but he still killed it. This song though is still one of my favorite songs to sing and base where my voice is at for the day. If you can sing any survivor song, you can sing in the mix
Back then, with this band, Journey, Kansas, and the singer for Rainbow Joe Lynn Turner, it almost felt that there is a whole "school" or discipline of singers in this style, very clear and bright. The song is almost disco with rock guitars and it feels that in spite of the minimal backing in places, there isn't much space to move around the tempo. One two three four tump tump tump eye-of-the-tiger-and-don't-mess-around-in-between-the maraching order.
I remember this song being huge.one of the most inspiring songs to lift weights, jog, fight training..All the trappings of youth.Yes.I too remember it being much bigger. Not just the voice but the guitar, drums as well.Need's a Zakk Wylde treatment.
1982 was a great year for music. "Eye of the Tiger" spent 6 weeks at #1. Only surpassed by "Physical" which spent 10 weeks at the top. "Centerfold" also was at #1 for 6 weeks. I couldn't tell that Jimi Jamison didn't sing that song. I learned it later. I'd say my favorite male singers of the 80s were Jimi Jamison, Lou Gramm, Mickey Thomas, and of course Steve Perry.
👏🏼As always, great breakdown on the epic song, Ken! 🔥I feel like those imperfections even add some charm to it. Survivor is my favourite band, it would be great if you analysed more of their songs. I have too many favourites: Desperate Dreams, Rebel Son, In Good Faith, I Can’t Hold Back, The Search is Over, Everlasting, I See You in Everyone, Jackie Don’t Go, I’m Not That Man Anymore, Ever Since the World Began, Poor Man’s Son, Runaway Lights. In other words, so many fantastic songs😀 I love Rocky movies, but it’s a bit sad that Eye of the Tiger gets all the attention.
Ken, this is what separates you from other vocal trainers. You take the time to point out these flaws yet how to correct and even add enhancement to iconic songs! Would love to have had your training and expertise before damaging my chords some time back. Highly recommend you to any artist wanting to sing the proper way!
Hey what's going on with the first "rising up"? There's a real clash of pitch with piano. He sounds sharp there, I'm surprised they didn't punch that in.
I recommend checking out rockin into the night. Great vocal preformence and harmonies. There is also some great stuff with bickler of the first survivor album as well
Please, please do the Jimi Jamison version. Jimi gives it so much power, his voice is truly beautiful!!! Check out his “Crossroads” album, he has some amazing songs.
Once again, a real blast from the past. I absolutely love and adore Eye of the tiger, amazing song that still holds up to todays music standards in my opinion :)
Survivor is one of my favorite bands ever. Bickler was good but Jamison was in a class by himself. I will say this, the guitarist Frankie Sullivan had some awesome tones and you can hear it in this song.
This was great, as usual. Something you said of the nature of the song made me go back and review it in context of the film and WOW. I saw things I never noticed before. How the big parts of the song are lpunches being landed with full body blows. More shocking to me was how it was Mr T who was the "Eye of the Tiger". It really was song writing being dictated by a movie. Again, thank you, am getting so much out of this series. You ROCK 🎸 🎤❤👑🎶🔥
Great break down! I like how you harmonized with Dave at the end, but I totally understand why they didn't do that. They didn't want that effect, when you harmonize like that, it almost makes the song a little too pretty, and I think they wanted the song to have more of a "punch" (no pun intended), and harmonizing would alter that effect. BTW, can you please do a video break of Toto's "Africa". Anyway, thanks for the awesome break down videos!
I like his scoop on Don't lose a grIP, good pitch! Does it on distance as well..On under annunciating sometimes you keep that ball of air or tanking to keep from disconnecting.. Like singing a long line without refilling pacing that breath with leads to..in some cases under annunciating! I will always be a student and Love what you do Ken!!
He sounds a lot like Steve Perry to my ears, not that perfect in pitch but when he holds on his long sung note it's beautiful sounding. Thanks to Sly they had a career ;) Cheers
That huge reverb is typical from the beginning of the 80s, imho. The "with the eye" part is unreachable to many singers and you make it look simple. Worse, or better, you harmonize it to a higher pitch!
I'd love to hear your breakdown and also your opinions and what you would keep or change to Warrants Blimd faith. It's one of my favorite songs. That and Coming home by Cinderella. I've never seen a breakdown of Blind Gaith by warrant done or discussed and I'm so curious your opinions on Jani Lanes vocals.
Once agian you pointed out things in the way this was sang I would have never noticed!!!!!! I'm glad your being picky, shows us that even good singers are not alwase spot on!!!!! You knowledge is truly impressive!!!!! Thank you for another great video. See ya soon I hope. Your friend from Nebraska
Some of the “reading it” feel could be explained by the need for perfection. It’s been a while, but I watched an interview with Jim Peterik. From what I recall, they did the demo for Stallone, which is what they actually play in the movie, but they struggled to get the “final” version to sound as good as the demo. So maybe Dave was “trying too hard” so to speak.
Love watching your videos! Very interesting. I have listened a lot to Survivor, and just wanted to point out that it was Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik who wrote the song. I think Dave and Jimi both are great singers, Jimi obviously the more technically skilled singer, but in my opinion it's the lack of the same skilled technicality that gives Dave a certain kind of feeling in his voice, which I think is very special. And I will never stop wondering and being amazed by how Jimi is able to sing those high notes so unaffected, without using falsetto. My humble opinion 🙂
Maybe my ears are really old but I didn't hear Jimi at all. Also, it's JIMI, not Jamie. For both singers, I do appreciate their great diction, especially Jimi's. I was so sad to discover Jimi died and I've been listening to everything I can find on RUclips. BEST voice ever.
It's probably an unpopular opinion, but I prefer Dave Bickler. Nothing against Jimi Jameson, he kicks ass. Kind of cool having two singers that sound pretty identical to each other.
@@kentamplin Yes! 😝✊🏾, one question though. Do you mind if you can send me a link to one of your videos that teaches how to make your voice gritty like the grittiness of Stevie Nicks? Thank you✨
Took a few times for me to understand about song sounding bigger. I think i see now, or think i do, that they make vocal sound bigger with reverbs (halls) and doubling even alot sometimes. And the band driving the volume being pushed. Do i have that right?
Picky is one thing…. This song is one that the raw vocals just worked. Sure, someone could have just been head voiced, sharp and just rolled with it. Instead, a performance was recorded…. It just worked. You can’t bottle lightning.
Welcome back to Ken Tamplin's fan support, where the prove is in the comments. It's not only that this song is a masterpiece, but also you don't just sit there... you know, banging your head and playing faces while listening to it... but also teaching useful knowledge instead to make things easier for us to improve our technique. It's a like from me. Wish you the best! ;)
there is also a studio recording with Jimi Jamison on it, which is more "perfect". but the "fire" is in the original singers recording. (though i love jimi jamison and his recorded version too).
Absolutely love survivor Ken awesome band survivor such a great band they had a lot of great songs I'm used to listening to Jamie Jameson loved his voice i loved eye of the tiger the search is over the moment of truth from karate kid David was great as well so yea I've always loved survivor the vocals are great live but anyways yes they had such a lot of great songs by an awesome band survivor rocks👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
ive never heard anyone sing this song as well as dave. the texture and tone of his voice, not to mention his range, was made for this. there's a reason females mainly attempt to cover, the range is insane, but of course they can't get that raspy male vocal to go with it.

Dave Bickler is still the original and the best.Ever since the world began outstanding
Sorry Ken, but I think you misjudged the vocal ability of Dave. You said it seems that Dave was just reading the lyrics. But you forgot that that the song was without music. Dave sang based on the music.
I personally love the imperfections. It shows they’re just people like me and you!
That's right!
Dave Bickler was perfect.
I ran into jim peterik a few months ago coming out of walgreens. Was gracious to talk to me for a few mins. Been a survivor fan for 40 years....
Incredible song and vocal performance! Jimi was fantastic too. May he rest in peace.
Gone too soon.

Jim Peterik was the band member that Stallone contacted....love your stuff Ken!
This song still gets me pumped up. I’m old but still can rock out. LOL
Rock on!
The Music in this song give you power
💪💪
I love how you’re able have strong opinions and remain genuinely humble.
Thanks for listening, C B! I appreciate it!
Touché
Dave didn't write this song. He just sung it. It was written by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik.
Even though Jimi was fantastic and phenomenal, - We all know this song was a massive superior hit BECAUSE OF Dave Bickler.
Period,💝
He's one of my favorite singer at all time.his voice is too powerful.nice pitch.especially when he sang "ever since the world began".
This song got me into rock music and that was about 12 years ago and i still love it today, another amazing job Ken, love your work as always. keep it up man.
Awesome! Thank you!!
Dude hes voice is just perfect for the song
Agree! Reminds me of Steve Winwood.
"Burning Heart" from the Jamison era would be fun.
Indeed! Thanks for listening!
Still wanna hear the Baywatch theme song by Jamison :)
I think Ken is profound in pointing out where you, as a singer would want to tighten up your game to give the best possible performance while at the same time acknowledging that sometimes soul wins out over everything else. 14:09 14:10 Love that part
Did you know that Dave Bickler also sang all of those comedic Bud Light radio commercials? They released them all on 3 CDs and I bought them.
Loved those commercials!
Real Men Of Genius!
Actually one of the hardest songs to sing in the way of how Dave sang it - at least for me lol!
Harmonies wouldn't have matched the design intent ... Rocky against the world ... one-on-one, etc. Had to be a solo vocal else it wouldn't have worked in the movie. That's why everyone remembers it being so epic!
Thanks for weighing in, Dean!
Agreed! Though I do like the harmony Ken sang..lol Cheers all!
I was listening to survivor yesterday Ken singing the search is over that's my mom's favorite survivor song
Loved moment of truth from karate kid and of course eye of the tiger from Rocky
Say hi to Tammy!
I sure will Ken
One my favourites. So much energy.
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Well Sylvester Stallone wanted the song “Another one bites the dust” of Queen for Rocky III, however Freddie Mercury refused… thank god he did :)
Thank you, Ken. Another great voice analysis. I saw some concert footage of Dave and Jimi performing together shortly before Jimi's passing. I was crushing SO big on Dave back in the day 😍
nice tutorial bro amazing video
Humble man... Love you man
Thank you, Dipankar!

This is definitely one of those top 3 anthems like We Will Rock You. Still tests very high today
One of my all-time favorite bands!! Very underrated. Both singers are excellent!
Yes they are!
Sometimes imperfection makes perfect. This song is not easy to sing.Love it video👍😍
Love the album 'Eye of the Tiger'. A lot more than the title track. The other 8 tunes are really good, and so dang catchy. Dave was awesome on the Bud Light commercials 'Real Men of Genius'. Great episode, Ken.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Rockin' into the night was supposed to be on the album too. Instead they gave the song to .38 special, and they made a hit out of it x)
I'm with you on the reading! I felt the detachment until he comes up upon the chorus it then comes alive . Lucky for him they had a good producer whom made it work. Great job as always. Blessings 🤘🙏🏻🤘
Thanks for the thoughts!
Thanks for the analysis, I enjoyed it. According to the Jim Peterik interview, the demo of the song was used for the opening of Rocky III - it has some subtle differences from the final produced version. Should be able to find it on YT easily.
😊👍
Thanks for sharing this videos
My pleasure!
Seriously very interesting, thank you for pointing these small details out.
My pleasure!
His singing reminds me of a saxophone. I like the soulful tone of his voice.
Cool!
I love this song...
Great!
One two three four tump tump tump
eye-of-the-tiger-and-don't-mess-around-in-between-the maraching order.
Thanks for weighing in, onsese joo!
Written by the keyboard player, Jim Peterik. He wrote "Vehicle" as well. 😃
👍
I remember this song being huge.one of the most inspiring songs to lift weights, jog, fight training..All the trappings of youth.Yes.I too remember it being much bigger. Not just the voice but the guitar, drums as well.Need's a Zakk Wylde treatment.
And of course our favorite RJD on vocal.
Thanks for weighing in! (see what i did there?😆)
David another good singer, very talented, thanks for your views on this singer
1982 was a great year for music. "Eye of the Tiger" spent 6 weeks at #1. Only surpassed by "Physical" which spent 10 weeks at the top. "Centerfold" also was at #1 for 6 weeks. I couldn't tell that Jimi Jamison didn't sing that song. I learned it later.
I'd say my favorite male singers of the 80s were Jimi Jamison, Lou Gramm, Mickey Thomas, and of course Steve Perry.
All greats! Thanks, amanda!
any suggestions on how to pick apart and play back different instruments and parts of songs without any physical mixers to work with?
This song IS glory. I love the phrasing, but this high pitch is a challenge :)
Raw but great
Thanks for watching, Andrew!
Great voice. Always loved the song
Glad you enjoyed it!
👏🏼As always, great breakdown on the epic song, Ken! 🔥I feel like those imperfections even add some charm to it.
Survivor is my favourite band, it would be great if you analysed more of their songs. In other words, so many fantastic songs😀
I love Rocky movies, but it’s a bit sad that Eye of the Tiger gets all the attention.
Thanks for listening, Anastasija!
DB was the singer in the humorous "Real Men of Genius" beer commercials of the 90's/00's.
One of my Favorites!!! Love the shirt btw.
Yay! Thank you!
I used to love those beer commercials dave did, when they saluted great beer drinkers.
You have such a deep speaking voice. Blows my mind how high you get. 🤯
Thanks!

Ken...love your harmonies.
Wow! Thank you!
Awesome, just listening to them yesterday!
Glad you like them!
Nonsense. His voice is unique
I recommend checking out rockin into the night.
Great vocal preformence and harmonies.
There is also some great stuff with bickler of the first survivor album as well
Rock on! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
This song rocks it's one of my favorites. Can you do a vocal analysis on Rob Halford singing Hell Bent For Leather.
Great suggestion, Steve!
Survivor is awesome! You gotta love epic thematic melodic music! I would really like to see your analysis of "Theocracy"...literally any song by them!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Survivor is one of my favorite bands ever. Bickler was good but Jamison was in a class by himself. I will say this, the guitarist Frankie Sullivan had some awesome tones and you can hear it in this song.
Thanks for weighingin!

I forgot about that,Was the Mr T film, not the Russian.lol..Got my Rocky's mixed up..You know, where the Squirrel fought the Moose...
I loved your added harmony!
Thanks for listening!
Great break down! I like how you harmonized with Dave at the end, but I totally understand why they didn't do that. Your material helped me a lot! I learned too much about what to look for when I evaluate my recording. Thank you Ken!
Glad it was helpful!
I like his scoop on Don't lose a grIP, good pitch! Does it on distance as well..On under annunciating sometimes you keep that ball of air or tanking to keep from disconnecting.. Thanks, soulguitar noyd!
He sounds a lot like Steve Perry to my ears, not that perfect in pitch but when he holds on his long sung note it's beautiful sounding. Thanks to Sly they had a career ;)
Cheers
Thanks for weighing in, Don!
Jimi Jameison sounded similar. Did a great job too.
That huge reverb is typical from the beginning of the 80s, imho.
The "with the eye" part is unreachable to many singers and you make it look simple. Worse, or better, you harmonize it to a higher pitch!

Jimi Jamison does have his own version of the song. That would be awesome if you could make an Isolated vocal analysis video for him.
Best vocal coach on RUclips! Love your videos!!!
Wow, thank you!
So excited you did Survivor...just waiting for The Search is Over...with Jimmy
Rock on!
Great video Ken enjoyed it 👍
Glad to hear it!

I believe he is singing, imitating the rhythm, the fighter's breathing, then speeds up a little.
Love watching your videos! Very interesting. I have listened a lot to Survivor, and just wanted to point out that it was Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik who wrote the song. I'm guessing we were all waiting for the highest pitch of the chorus, which is *freakin fire* ! 😝✊🏾
Rock on!
@@kentamplin Yes! 😝✊🏾, one question though.
Do you mind if you can send me a link to one of your videos that teaches how to make your voice gritty like the grittiness of Stevie Nicks? Thank you✨

@@kentamplin Thanks Alot Ken😊❤
You've frankly spoken 👏
Rock on!
00:17 OMG Ken you slaping your stomach caught me by surprise 😂😂😂 You make the best videos when you enjoy yourself!!
Glad you enjoyed!
Took a few times for me to understand about song sounding bigger. I think i see now, or think i do, that they make vocal sound bigger with reverbs (halls) and doubling even alot sometimes. And the band driving the volume being pushed. Do i have that right?
That's a big part of it, Michael.
Picky is one thing…. This song is one that the raw vocals just worked. Sure, someone could have just been head voiced, sharp and just rolled with it. Instead, a performance was recorded…. It just worked. You can’t bottle lightning.
The harmony concept towards the end gave me chills.. Man that would have been epic!
Thanks for watching, Ryan!
Great Song and vocal. Loved this so much in Rocky. Thanks for doing an ISO on it! God Bless Ken
So glad you liked it!
Wish you the best! ;)
Thanks so much, Miguel! I appreciate that!
there is also a studio recording with Jimi Jamison on it, which is more "perfect". but the "fire" is in the original singers recording. (though i love jimi jamison and his recorded version too).
