    I learned more about computers in one day than I did in the last twenty-five years of owning a computer! Thanks for this. Everything worked exactly as you said it would although Windows 10 made it a little trickier to find things. So glad I stumbled onto your video. My new CD will now sound exactly as I intended it to sound.

    A very big thank you, dude. Our press plant said "no ISO, please send a DDP". I got scared that I have to buy such expensive mastering software. But fortunately I did all the recording, mixing and mastering with reaper so it was good to see that REAPER can also make DDP files. With the help of your tutorial it was quit a simple thing.
    Thank you very much and go on!

      André Hinkel You're welcome. I wouldn't call this a simple thing to do but saving a few hundred dollars over buying DDP software makes it all worth it. That plus DDP is better quality than sending them a CD-R and having them rip it. Plus, you save on shipping costs + the drive to the post office/UPS/Fedex.

    Realy great tutorial, as posted before learned A LOT in the last 35 minutes!
    Just for the record, ddptools is available for macOS (from the address in the description) as binary, which can be installed and run from any directroy in the system.
    Also would like to point out that you can have index 0 (! markers) for every track, specially when usig gaps beween tracks, so you get the usual countdown before play starts and tracks on CD match actual wav file play time.
    Thanks for yout time on doing this! Already a fan!

    If you aren't already try using an external hard drive. Those usually run faster (7200 RPM vs. 5400 RPM of typical laptop drives). USB 2.0 or firewire if possible.
    But definitely check out the Offline Audio Mixing video.

    You make the DDP files in REAPER and then verify them with DDPTools. The link for DDPTools is in the video description. Look on the right side of the page for a Windows download link.
    It's underneath the Linux link, which is a little unusual but hey!

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  5 лет назад

      In case those links ever are dead, I have backed up DDP Tools at realhomerecording.com/plugins . Both the 2011 version featured in this video and the latest version as of this post.

  • @RealHomeRecording
    @RealHomeRecording  12 лет назад +1

    VSTis and certain plugins can suck up a lot of CPU. Especially when you're running high sample rates. Have you seen my video about Offline Audio Mixing? That may help a bit.
    For VSTis I would, after you're finished editing notes, render it down so it's not pulling samples. Synths usually aren't a problem unless they are samples of synths. But I always try to bounce VSTis and disable them (but don't delete in case you have to go back and fix something.)
    Core Duo processors are slow...

    Hey! Thanks for the video! One question: At the start your track (the first item) _starts_ at 00:00. The second marker goes to 00:02. At the end of the video the original audio track starts at 00:02, not at 00:00, like in the beginning. At which point did the audio tracks get moved to start from 00:02?

    • @Gitternmaker
      @Gitternmaker 5 лет назад

      I was wondering this, too. I assume the start of the first track DOES have to be moved to 00:02? Otherwise, the track marker is in the wrong place. The other tracks and their respective markers also have to move to correspond. Ripple editing should cope with it, but it would be nice to see a heads-up in the video description.

    Great tutorial, thank you very much :-) I've followed all your steps to check that the Render worked, and the only slight issue I have is the frame value for most of the songs (a 10 track album) in the DDP_image.cue file are one frame out, compared to where each song actually starts in the Reaper timeline. Is that a concern, do you know? Thanks again 🙂

    • @RealHomeRecording

      Being one frame off may be something to report to the REAPER developers and also ask the place that will be replicating the disc.

    BTW, yes, I've got epicVerb v1.5, and I just removed it from all the tracks in my most recent project; now when I playback the project, I'm below 50% the entire way! Actually left NastyDLA in, and it appears to be behaving just fine now, which is nice; I really love the delay presets it has!

  • @RealHomeRecording
    @RealHomeRecording  12 лет назад

    Make sure you're using the latest version of REAPER....4.261. I believe this was an issue fixed in version 4.26
    If you do a Google search of data strem length does not match subcode ddpinfo the person who coded the DDP portion of REAPER acknowledged the bug on July 21, 2012.
    If that doesn't work I would download a demo of Sonoris DDP Player to verify the files.

    Hello RHR channel owner, thanks for your effort on putting this tutorial available to the public.
    I've just grabbed a copy of a sample project with all the DDP info to be inserted, and I found it very simple, even though we have to deal with the CD text manually, the arguments for metadata and how to split them on CD text is easy.
    Some things I'm yet to understand. The album information should be put at the end of the project?
    Also, setting the project tempo to 240 is mandatory? Why?
    Thanks in advance for your feedback on this matter.
    Peace,
    Edu Camargo.

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  6 лет назад +1

      It's been awhile since I've watched this video but if I said in there to put album information at the end then that's what should be done.
      as for the tempo no that is not mandatory that is just to make it easier to set cue markers more precisely.

    If you give Discmakers a CD they will rip it to a DDP file project. This leaves room for errors. If you can make your own DDP project not only are there zero errors but you can also send it to them over the internet and save on shipping costs.
    Just make sure you follow every step in this video and you should be good to go. Follow the verification steps (those are IMPORTANT) and if you are afraid your DDP file doesn't work check out Sonoris Audio Engineering's DDP Player software.

    Core Duo's are 6 1/2 year old tech at this point. If it's under 2 GHz even worse.
    Ironically I'm using a better system (2.4 GHz Core 2 Quad) as my day to day computer and a slower one (3 GHz Core 2 Duo) at "studio B" which is where I do all of my "serious" recording and mixing. I can easily use a lot more plugins on my Quad system even though my sound card is garbage with lots of latency.
    You also have a hard drive bottleneck as well. More than likely a 5400 RPM drive. Solid state rocks.

    Classical music CD's often use it.

  • @oliverarnold7913
    @oliverarnold7913 5 лет назад

    First of all - big thank you for that helpful tutorial. It worked fine here. Just one question (mentioned earlier already, but i just did not get it...). You imported the Godsmack tracks in Reaper. All at once, all in one track. Am I right that this means reaper will attach track 2 to track 1, track 3 to track 2 etc. without any silence in between? As far as i have been told, the red book standard says "leave at least 2 seconds between the tracks". Is there an "autmatical" way to do this when importing the tracks to reaper? If not, this means i have to leave that gap "manually"? What consequences does this have for the markers? I mean usually, the CD Player says -00:02... -00:01, then 00:00 and the track starts. How do i set that one up correctly?

    • @oliverarnold7913
      @oliverarnold7913 5 лет назад

      okay... solved it: arrage the tracks in the way, that you have the desired silence in between. Set markers at track beginnings just as shown in the tutorial. Then add markers at the end of the tracks and name each of them "!". Thats it.
      Another hint: the special character, named Pipe - you won't find this one e.g. on a german (QWERTZ) Keyboard. Solve this by clicking and holding the ALT-Key and type 124 on the numeric Keypad. This is the ASCII-Code...and the pipe will appear.

    Ya, I got it sorted out; would really hate to lose the use of epicVerb & NastyDLA, tho; read that assigning them to "dedicated processes" could help out; gonna try that out tonight. Reaper was crashing on some VSTi's, until I did that; now it's very stable again. Seems like epicVerb, more than NDLA, can cause issues. I guess I need to be on the look-out for other free verb/delay plug-ins -- any suggestions for freebies that are good (low cpu)?

    Does anyone know: If a production is DIY and has no particular ISRC or EAN, what do I do? Is there a universal code for such a case? Thank you!
    Also, great Star Trek theme!

    Hi, Thanks a lot for this complete and detailed tutorial. Anyway, I just have one question : Can you make that whole ddp operation in reaper if your files are already dithered to 16 bits, 44100 ? Or is the dithering process should always intervene at the very last stage?
    Is it destructive in any form, If I do this with my files already dithered in reaper and export it as a DDP file? (with nothing on the master or mix buss and without changing any volume knob in the mixer or anything else)
    A million thanks for your answer

      +Linge Records You certainly can use 16-bit dithered files as the final stage. Especially if you aren't doing any processing and just using the session to compile all of the tracks together. And if you do use 16 bit/44.1 kHz files just disable dithering when creating the DDP file because at that point it's no longer necessary.

    Hi, the CD factury is saying I have a missmatch in the MD5 file. I believe it's because I didn't set the project framerate reaper ti 1/75. I cannot find anywhere in Reaper how to set it. When I test the created WAVE file in the first few songs with the phase shift I have no sound, but after a few songs I they start to be seperated. Minor seperations and in fact not a match. How do I sort this out?

    Hey dude, cheers for the vid, I want to use this method to make the CDs myself, do I now just run the cue file through Nero or something?

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  7 лет назад

      No, you should send the files either burned as a data CD or FTP them to the duplication company. The cue would mess things up. Good question!

    Darn I keep having trouble with the cmd part. I type in ddptools and it ALWAYS says 'ddptools' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I'm not savvy with this sort of thing. Any suggestions?

      What operating system are you using?

    • @hivisboys

      windows xp. i just kept on trying variations and placing the ddptools folder in different locations in C and it ended up working. At first it was on the desktop and couldn't find it.

      Ahh OK. Yeah, the Desktop would be a pain in the ass to do a command line on so I just put it in the C drive too...as you saw on the video. :-) Glad you figured it out!

    Thanks for this. Why exactly are you changing the tempo to 240?

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  6 лет назад

      It's just to get more snapping slices. That way marker cues and other items can be set more precisely. This video was made almost six years ago, so hopefully my memory serves correctly!

    • @TheGoodDrEvil
      @TheGoodDrEvil 6 лет назад

      Ak, so you mean 'inter-frame snapping slices' ?
      Because in the end, if the audio is not exactly divisible by frames (75 a second), there will be silence added to it automatically to fill to the next frame point.
      Normally you wouldn't notice this, but if you're making a gapless disk with crossfades, this could cause a audible hiccup,
      So I'm not sure what benefit the 240bpm gives you.
      I guess you can freely move the audio to where you want it to be, as long as you then trim its in and out points to be exactly on a frame line.
      Thanks for getting back to me!
      I'm just learning about this DDP creation ability in Reaper today. (It's not my main DAW, I've been evaluating it for years, mainly for tests. I might get a license and start using it for this now.
      Cheers!

      Yvo van gemert you are correct. The 240 suggestion isn't anything that needs to be exact. It's just a way two more easily place the cursor for cue markers.
      I'm not sure about whether silence is added or not.

      Yvo van gemert if you look through some of my recent videos from the past 2 months I did another one about a cheap DDP creation software. It is a lot easier to use than Reaper and you can check your disc a lot easier.

    1. Now, how do I burn a CD from this point?
    I want to have the cd text on it.
    2. Why does the ddp_image.cue file in my Notepad not show anything with special characters, such as letters čš ...?
    It even don't show the COMPOSER and SONGWRITER tags. Why?

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  10 лет назад

      Robert Petrič This video was uploaded in 2012 and REAPER + DDP Tools has changed. I know that you can burn a reference CD...not sure about one with CD Text though.
      I really don't know the answer to your second question. You will be better off contacting the guy who made DDP Tools.
      If any of this feels too complicated then you may want to check out www.sonorissoftware.com/catalog/ddp-creator-p-47.html . It's much easier to use but it's not free.

    Hi, and what if the files are already in 44.1kHz, 16bit and dithered? You mention the dithering is the last thing to do. Do we dither again or can it be ignored?

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  6 лет назад +1

      Correct. No dither is necessary if they've already been dithered.

    How do you create silence between tracks?

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  10 лет назад

      Keith Sudano Just leave a gap on the timeline at the end of a track.

    • @KeithSudano
      @KeithSudano 10 лет назад

      RealHomeRecording.com Thank you. Not trying to be difficult at all, just want to make sure I understand. So, if I want a 5 second gap I leave a 5 second space on Reapers timeline between tracks? If so, that's too easy and Discmakers really worded that badly.

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording  10 лет назад

      Keith Sudano Make sure you're following ALL the steps in this video. If you have a track that you need to add 5 seconds to then you would of course need to move your other items (mixes) and markers (cues) as well. The Item menu then Nudge/set items may help you with this. The markers signify the start and end of new tracks.
      With DDP you're creating one big sound file with cues. This is how it's done at professional mastering houses (that's how they can get tracks to fade into one another seamlessly, etc.) Again, follow the steps in this video carefully and you should be good to go.
