  • This week I'm talking about Salomon Skates. Ricardo's Industry Killers video popped up on my home page a couple of weeks back and this inspired me to put pen to paper and make a video of my own.
    Are these skates still killing the industry in 2021? Let's take a closer look...

    I still remember my mom taking me to the skate shop to pick up my pair of Salomon Aaron feinberg's in the dark grey color way. Best skate I ever owned. So many memories with this brand. I'm 33 but looking at these skates makes me feel like a kid again. Best hard boots in the game even now IMO. ST9 & ST80 were also personal favourites but the AF's were the 1 for me. Salomon was all I wore for a lot of years lol.

    Completely agree with you, there’s no other hard boot that looks or feels quite like a Salomon.
    Everything about it is so aesthetically pleasing, between the heel cup/cuff section is what really has always grabbed my eye, and the look down when skating them, also the lacing system, can’t believe no one has utilized the lace locks to this day.

    I saw that video as well. I love Ricardo Lino’s stuff. His perspective made sense to me on the one hand, on another hand, as many have said- buying soul plates, wheels, etc still supports the industry. I agree with one of the commenters that if an industry is being tanked by a decades old product, that industry is not doing enough. I think it’s important to remember as well that a lot of these industries are paid for by the money of middle schoolers and high schoolers. Not all of them get money from their parents. And there’s a huge market still in Latin America. One commenter from Latin America commented on Lino’s page that in his country, it would take an extremely long time to save enough to buy a complete pair of skates. So he bought used because that is the only way that he could participate in the industry. Your primary purchasing demographic doesn’t necessarily have a lot of money to burn. I think it’s really cool that people have found a way to make those old boots work.
    Also he has since posted a video taking a lot of these types of comments into account.

I’ve just got back into blading after 15 years away from the scene and I used to have a pair of Salomon skates back in the day and loved them, I never thought they were killing the industry....exactly the opposite actually. I really didn't get his video. Like, there is no actual problem.
    He's telling people not to buy second hand skates because they're ruining the market? What? In what way? Also this would be true for ANY "dead" brand, not just Salomon. It's simply not true, yet it's all he says. Which shows that he just seems to have a personal issue with Salomon or that there actually was something sketchy going on for him to make such a video.
    Most of Salomon shoes nowadays are sold second hand- which DIRECTLY supports skaters. Then you buy new parts for them anyway etc.
    The second big problem I have with his video is him telling us to support the industry by buying from literally any (alive) brand on the market. As "great" example he uses wish. Which is the worst market place ever.
    90% of brands produce as cheap as possible in China. Why should I support these brands over a great second hand boot where my money goes directly to a passionate skater (who eventually might use it on these brands anyway)?
    It just doesn't make any sense.

    One of the only few plastic boots (whose usage has endures) that looks markedly different than a slightly modified Rollerblade Lightning TRS. Aeons being another one that was a significant departure from a super 'traditional' boot mold.... Sals also are made of some incredible plastic. No backslide plate and they still last for years and years on concrete ledges.

    I feel like the original 'industry killer' video was just purely channel marketing. The fact that he termed it in such an abrasive, divisive and reductive way that caused and still causes his video to be referenced should be proof of this. Same with the 'identity crisis' stuff recently. Clickbaity, easily repeatable sloganeering. It's the biggest non-issue.

    • @chrischadwick1
      @chrischadwick1  3 года назад +1

      Hi Shaun, thanks for taking the time to respond. I think your right that that the title of Ricardos original video was intentionally provocative, but i think he genuinely feels strongly about the issue and it made for some interesting discussion.
      However i dont think the identity stuff is a none issue, i think we do need to decide what we call our sport and its sub divisions. Interested to hear why do you think its a none issue?

    • @ThatShaunBoy
      @ThatShaunBoy 3 года назад +2

      @@chrischadwick1 I'm probably being cynical but I really don't feel like he does feel strongly about it. It's such a ridiculously small amount of people who are even skating Salo's and the counter-arguments you made in your video should be obvious to anyone who has given it even the smallest bit of thought. And on the identity crisis thing, does it matter? Without having any data of course I'd say the vast majority call it inline skating/skating as an umbrella term anyway and if I was to throw in a curveball and call it rollerblading to a random person, they'd understand what I meant. Do we call slalom, aggressive, freestyle/urban, rec, speed, downhill, marathon, etc, etc all one name? I doubt that would be easier to market and pretty reductive seeing all those things barely interact with each other culturally (you know how hardcore aggressive skaters are!! haha). Do we force non-english speaking countries to use one English term? That would be troublesome and anglocentric. I feel like everything else is the same also. You wanna go biking? Does that mean BMX, mountain, road biking, trials biking? Skateboards, long boards, penny boards, cruiser boards etc etc. Language is messy and is in constant change depending on the context. I think trying to lock the world into a single term is a waste of energy.

      I know this is 7 months old now, but I think that USD has multiple skates that are like salos. I think USD Carbons and carbon free are a very Salo esq shape and feel...but FAR lighter, better sole plate design and tbh a better overall skate (not knocking salo's btw they are great I had like 3 pairs back in the day including the vinny mintons with the huge sole plates that were actually terrible). The USD Aeon is sort of like a Salo kind of skate, with a lot of the same drawbacks he named in this video tbh that vanilla (without any mods) Salos have. Lastly, I'd say Iqons the AG 10 and 20 are both similar to Salos...BUT, in my opinion, actually better..seeing as those are just rebranded USD carbons and carbon free's. Hope you get back into blading though.

    Skating has always been about selling used skates, and used products We never really thought about the industry because we are the skaters not the sales managers for the companies. We sell used skates, used helmets, used wheels and parts so we can make money. It never had anything to do with trying to get a little more money into the huge corporations in the industry. If you want to support "The Industry" buy products from the companies you like.

    • @chrischadwick1
      @chrischadwick1  3 года назад +1

      Hey man, a factor's to consider here
      Condition (particularly liners and shock absorbers) Most salo shocks have crumbled and melted into the bottom of the boot over the years!
      Rarity is another factor, the st8 blues are one of the rarist so attract a higher price tag. The Rob Thompson Pro and the St teams also sell well.
      But as a general rule of thumb a new or like new pair should be £100 to £200. A well used pair £40 to £50. A rare pair in mint condition £200 and up.
      If you are buying factor in price of new shocks and liners where needed and whether or not you'll need to convert them to ufs. Its easy to do but takes a bit of time. Oh and Facebook Blade trade will often show you the price skates sold for so you can use this as a guide too. Hope that helps man!
