Program Notes:
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, while fondly remembered by some, is often overlooked among the many Disney favorites. Its soundtrack, however, is truly beautiful, incorporating many elements of church music to reflect its setting in and around the Notre Dame Cathedral. The story itself, based on the Hugo novel, contains many dark themes, subjects, and places, but eventually moves towards a positive conclusion (unlike the original book); I wanted to show that contrast and ultimate optimism in the medley, re ecting the movie as it moves from the darkness of Frollo’s power to the joy of Quasimodo’s freedom.
The piece begins as the movie does, with “The Bells of Notre Dame”, a piece that swings wildly between the tragedy of Quasimodo’s backstory and the majesty of Notre Dame itself, featuring the tolling of bells and the drama of Latin church music in both cases. The medley (and story) then drops to a more somber mood with “In Here”, as Frollo rebukes Quasimodo for dreaming of life outside his tower, the scolding bassoon line echoed by the oboe as Quasimodo agrees with and accepts Frollo’s admonitions. Here, though, the medley begins to skip over the movie; it leaps first to Quasimodo’s lovestruck happiness in “Heaven’s Light” with its sweetly simple clarinet melody and joyous bells, but then returns to a darker atmosphere with the twisted drama of Frollo’s growing obsession in “Hell Fire”, featuring church chanting in the cellos and Frollo’s prayers in a horn chorale.
Finally, the medley begins to move towards a more hopeful conclusion with the pensive beauty of “God Help the Outcasts” and its more joyful variant, “The Bell Tower”. Here Esmeralda’s themes come to the fore, the upper woodwinds taking the lead before bringing in the full orchestra for the majestic conclusion of “The Bell Tower”. Finally, this optimism ushers in the initially troubled but ultimately joyous “Out There”. The song is actually from much earlier in the movie, normally coming directly after “In Here”, but its reckless positivity serves as a fitting end for the medley. Here the entire orchestra comes together for one last fantastic rush to capture Quasimodo’s guileless optimism, finishing with a brassy fanfare as the camera backs out over all of the majesty of Notre Dame.
This medley has been a massive undertaking with which I’ve had tremendous amounts of help-countless thanks to Haohang Xu for help with the arrangement itself, and to Pong Trairatvorakul and Gwen Antell for managing the addition of handbells. Видеоклипы
0:00 - Disney Intro
0:40 - The Bells of Notre Dame
3:41 - Out There
5:41 - Heaven's Light
7:15 - Hellfire
9:03 - God Help the Outcasters
10:50 - The Bell Tower
11:41 - Out There (reprise)
Hi there! Arranger here - thanks for putting this together, it's spot-on. I just want to add that "God Help the Outcasts" metamorphoses into "The Bell Tower" at 10:50; it's an instrumental version of the same melody that I loved too much to leave out.
Also, bonus musings - you're quite correct that both 3:41 and 11:41 are "Out There". However, as a meta note, I personally consider the 3:41 section a different song titled "In Here"; Frollo dominates this section, and when he leaves there's a musical transition to Quasimodo's segment (11:41) so strong that it practically feels like a different piece.
@@sundapplet.c.4546 Thanks! I didn't know this was a different song, I always thought it was the opening part of "Out There".
By the way, this is the best arrangement of this movie I found on RUclips. Your work was just amazing.
@@dunke10 Sorry, to clarify - you're entirely right that it's only ever officially treated as the opening of "Out There" on the actual soundtrack; it just "acts" like two songs in a lot of ways (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_There_(Disney_song) for some interesting discussion). And thank you so much! It was definitely a labor of love, it's a beautiful soundtrack.
God bless people like you.
Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone
Gazing at the people down below me
All my life I watch them as I hide up here alone
Hungry for the histories they show me
All my life I memorize their faces
Knowing them as they will never know me
All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day
Not above them
But part of them
And out there
Living in the sun
Give me one day out there
All I ask is one
To hold forever
Out there
Where they all live unaware
What I'd give
What I'd dare
Just to live one day out there
Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives
Through the roofs and gables I can see them
Ev'ry day they shout and scold and go about their lives
Heedless of the gift it is to be them
If I was in their skin
I'd treasure ev'ry instant
Out there
Strolling by the Seine
Taste a morning out there
Like ordinary men
Who freely walk about there
Just one day and then
I swear I'll be content
With my share
Won't resent
Won't despair
Old and bent
I won't care
I'll have spent
One day
Out there
The music of Hunchback was soaring. The score and the music really overshadowed the lyrics.
Just to clarify, one of the things about medleys is that they'll cut some songs short, as to not make the performance longer than it should be, and that they mix the songs up as to make it interesting. So don't be surprised when you, at first, don't hear your favorite song, or when they cut some of them short.
That opening though!! 😃
This is absolutely flawless. Thank you to the orchestra, the cameraman and all those who assisted in sharing this beautiful performance
thank you im crying, its beautiful
I've probably listened to this about 100 times, at the very least💜
Whoever believes magic doesn’t exist, hasn’t listened to enough orchestral music.
Best song at 7:50

Thanks, was searching for it. It was so epic.
thanks mate
Haha totally was looking forma this :D
We all Know that's the reason why we are here lol
I like just listening and didn't hear that the bells at all (only realizing there were later). They're completely drowned out by the (gorgeous) music. Beautifully done! Just sounded off without bells
Gorgeous!!
YES! This is absolutely beautiful
superb... speechless... how one songs goes over into the next... 10/10 .. no words
I feel like they should have used tubular bells rather than hand bells. They would have sounded more like cathedral bells.
We have a handbell ensemble on campus, so playing this piece was a small collaboration with them. Thanks for your suggestion though, let us know if you know any other popular pieces that would suit handbells or tubular bells! :)
I wish this happened in my country
what a waste those empty seats... i would have paid god knows how much for admission...
yeah wtf its empty? i really wish i could be there
How did I miss this I love HOND
Truly incredible!❤️
Pretty sure that the whole of the french horn section was drunk
AlienMidget123 The saxophones at right are overpowering. The fanfare is supposed to be Horns, not Saxes.
The frech horns are always drunk. 😁 Now if you will please take out a number two Puerto Rican...
Can't tell ya how grateful I am they left A Guy Like You outta the medley lmao
This is very good stuff! ^_^

Amazing medley. I really wish there was a better recording of it, without the audience noises.
we're working on better recordings for our future videos!
Great recording
You forgot the organ…it’s right there! The whole movie was centered around a cathedral! I mean, it sounded pretty and all but, a missed opportunity right?
Amazing !
Before I'm even ten seconds in, something bizarre stands out to me. They have the Disney intro at the start. This may seem fitting of this suite, since it was a Disney film, but when you watch the movie, something stands out that makes you realize how weird this choice is. See, the film doesn't use the traditional Disney intro music. Instead, the intro sequence plays over the "Olim" section of "The Bells of Notre Dame" as bells toll and drown the voices out. With that in mind, the Disney intro seems like a bizarre inclusion.
It's also the modern Disney intro (with CGI castle), so it me it doubly stands out. Perhaps they do that everytime they do Disney though?
Great job!
Awesome! But my favorite is missing (Sanctuary!)
Wow

THE SAXES!!!!😭😭💛🎷
can we just celebrate the fact there are so many women in the brass section!
Yes we can! 🎺
Everywhere I go, I see simply piano ads can someone help me
I have a question. This score of The Hunchback of Notre Dame arranged by Emily Goldberg is now on sale?
Arrangement is so wonderful. I would like to watch score.
Sorry for Hellfire cut short
What...NO BASSES!?!? You cannot be an orchestra without a contra bass voice cable of the 16' C rank (aka C1).
We try
Are there no bassists in your area? If not, you have quite the number of cellos, are none of them willing to switch to bass? Where are you located?
+PerspectiveZero We have bassists in our past few concerts! Subscribe to look out for videos coming soon! :)
Okay...I am still amazed how you can have so many string players with no basses...for the sake of musical integrity, I would hope you would have then. I though you may be close to where I live, however I am nowhere near Yale University, otherwise I am a double bassist with a completed Bachelor of Music from Grand Valley State University (I am currently finishing my second major, education) and would enjoy playing in such an orchestra (I play on a five-string double bass).
👏👏🎺🎷🎼
They skiiped "Out There" and jumped to "Heaven's Light?", and cut "Hellfire" short....
12:06
Wait! Where is "out there"? Sorry, is at about 12:06
