- This is a suite I made with the orchestral cues from the original cd. It's the best score written by Menken for Disney and it didn't win the Oscar ! It's complex, richly orchestrated and all the themes are beautifully written. It is a masterpiece !
This, by far, deserved the Academy Award.

Monique Schmn Bc it was an example of political incorrectness and you know the political correctness wusses hate that. It's tragic that this mesmerizing captivating film did not the recognition it so highly deserved.
I bet the Academy thought Alan Menken had one Oscar too many. He had won 8 in not just 6 years. Still, this scored was robbed big time.

I've always felt that this and the score for "The Little Mermaid" were by far Menken's best works.
On another note, hearing this score brings back memories seeing as how I played an orchestral arrangement of it back in middle school lol.
I was obsessed with this movie back then and mainly because it touched on so many things related to being human,
For me, his best scores are Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Pocahontas. I wish he will do scores like this again.

If you liked the movie, you'll love the stage production. It's unbelievable, trust me. I recommend the recording of the La Jolla Playhouse performance on youtube.

They really ignored this movie accept for all the promotions. However, I am pretty sure now with the tragedy with Notre Dame, this movie will now get the recognition that it deserves.

I agree cause I've always felt that this score, even on its own, was so powerful, so full of strong emotion, that I always felt it was one of the better examples of why Alan Menken should be up there in common opinion with John Williams or Elmer Bernstein
I'm currently reading the original book for the first time (well, an English translation because my French is terrible lol) and it's so different from the Disney movie. I'm enjoying it a lot nonetheless because wow, Victor Hugo knows exactly how to pull his readers into the story. I'm at Book 3 now and it's truly a masterpiece! Also this music gives me goosebumps
Glyhnzel i'm still trying to find an English copy and all i could find are 2 copies in my school library and one of them still has the price sticker on it. Turns it was bought in our local bookstore and it's not even that expensive!
