- Can you turn the Land Rover Discovery 5 into a competent and reliable Australian Outback, off road tourer and tow car? You'd better believe it! We show you what we did and where we've taken our off road touring weapon! Air suspension comment - air suspension was added to the Range Rover Classic LSE, a luxury edition. The P38 was across the range. I was wrong with the date HDC was introduced in the Freelander. It was 1997, not 2002. Here's links to some of the companies we used in our build. I really wanted a d5 or a discovery but I didn't have the money for a new car for either models, I also never tow so this opened up my options. I ended up going for a competitor that has air suspension, unibody construction, factory 18 inch alloys with all terrain tyres, steel under body protection, rear LSD with clutch packs that can lock, low range, hill descent control etc. I wanted to say thanks. Although I couldn't stretch out for this and spent $35K less you opened my eyes to the off-road potential of a luxury SUV. I am far happier with this than a dual cab ute or a dual cab ute wagon variant which are the majority of competitors in this field.

I’ve had a D4 HSE SDV6 for nearly 11 years and at 330,000 Km it’s still going strong. As a rural dweller with mud, potholes, narrow lanes and constant wet weather, I’ve had all the iconic 4x4s you can get in the UK and it is the best of the lot. So much so, I can’t think how we’d replace it, if we ever wanted to or had to. It does everything and you can always squeeze more stuff in it. D5 is probably the best bet for us, one day, so your video has been very encouraging.

Nice video. Maybe you could also do one on your experience with maintenance and any reliability issues you may have faced. I love these vehicles but hate the all the comments about reliability etc., I'm sure you've heard "you go into the desert in a LandRover & come out in a Land Cruiser" Which you've proven wrong by the looks of it all while towing 3.5t. I am very jealous of your outback opportunities living in the Scotland is green and lovely country but getting away from the main roads and into great open spaces is great. I’ve visited Australia for work 3 or 4 times visiting Melbourne, Darwin, Broome, Perth etc but had little time to explore further afield. Approaching retirement one day it is my dream to drive some of your remotest tracks & places before the world is eventually covered in tarmac & concrete. Thanks for your video & obvious enthusiasm, long may you enjoy .
Hi Peter. Thank you very much for your detailed comment. We can only say that if you get the chance to come here for the Outback, do it! You certainly won’t regret it. We were coming to the UK and Scotland of course in 2020. Well, you can guess what happened to those plans. Maybe in the future. Take care and enjoy your Land Rovers!

Well real axleis am issue the SDV8 is a great Power unit.
@@ianbailey4114 the 7-seat D5 has a rear axel load of 1900kg - 100kg more than the RRS I think.
@@wewouldntbedeadforquids6005 Yes I have removed the 2 lead batteries and rear mufflers, now run Ĺipo4 batteries. Only carry fridge and tools.

Land Rover launched air suspension on the Range Rover Classic LSE in 92 not on the P38 which came after. Hill decent was conceived for the original Freelander due to lack of a low range transfer box and was fitted to that platform at it's launch in 98
Thanks Gary. My dates were provided by a source who was actually working at LR in Solihull at that time. I sent a fart to him for fact checking and comment. I had thought 1998 for the HDC, but was corrected to 2002. Seems he was incorrect. He also told me about the P38. Previously as you said just the LSE. It was across the range in the P38 I believe. Anyway, I can’t do anything about it now. Thanks however.

Thanks @4bnewb969. The Fourby Fitouts system is great. We wouldn’t be without it. If we need to, it’s very easily removed too. It was the first they’d done for a D5. Love our “unmolested look” too.
Great and useful information ....thanks for your posts. I notice the Do35 hitch sits higher and seemingly further out than the factory hitch? What brand of hitch is that? The standard LR hitch is not high enough for an offroad van, and most riser hitches sit further out than the max. 165mm recommended in the handbook. Closest I can find is the Stinger Aluminium hitch abt. 210mm from hitch pin to ball. Interested to hear what you use. I am finding aftermarkets also have a lot more play in the reciver and shims are needed side and top, which you also seem to use? Looking forward to your reply!
G’day Jason. Thanks for your comments. The hitch is a Hayman Reece #21126. It is the exact same length as the OEM hitch. The rise is 30mm and at road height it is 500mm. Perfect of our XCE.

G’day @SteveC-gn7by. Thanks for your comment. I wasn’t aware that Boos had closed. I’m sorry, I don’t know of any other manufacturer in AU. Lucky8 LLC in New York make one and will ship here. Rhino 4WD in Mornington, Victoria make a winch compatible replacement front bumper/bull bar with integrated bash plate but VERY expensive. Check with TuffAnt in Brisbane to see if a bash plate is on their agenda.

Do you know if the Ingenium D300 engine is reliable compared to the SDV6?
G’day @tempestv8. I have no experience with it personally, but I know people who have the D300. I’ve heard nothing bad about them so far and they’ve been around for 3 years now. Much better on AdBlue consumption the the Sd6 and Td6.
Terrible audio. I made it to 4:59 and gave up after that.
Can you tell you are driving a diesel? I had the p360 and it was so quiet and smooth as every petrol of course...
G’day@OshoLee. The D5 is extremely quiet.The sound insulation both under the bonnet and in the cabin is excellent. On start up there is the typical diesel rattle. However it doesn’t sound like a tractor like almost all other diesels. Once under way there is no way you’d know it was a diesel. It’s quiet, smooth, powerful and very responsive to the throttle.
