Hey man what do I do if my board wants to do a varial kick flip instead of a kickflip? When I go to do it my board goes to flip like a kickflip and then suddenly it veers off to the right and the back of the board ends up as the front if you know what I am trying to say.
steve pitt Make sure your foot is popping straight down, a varial is basically a pop shuv it and a kickflip.

Thanks to you Spencer/Ride (along with Aaron Kyro) I landed a kickflip today. I quit skateboarding at around age 15 because I got frustrated with it. I had no mentors or instruction and I was too afraid to go to a skate park and ask for help. I'm 23 and I just picked up skating again. Thanks to these videos and others, I'm progressing faster than I could have ever hoped.

Aidan Smith it's hard to explain you, for one you HAVE to use that certain part of your toe, if you don't it's harder to flick, but I practiced 6 hours a day on just kick flips and got it in a week, but even after you land it you have to keep practicing to get it better

whanowa things have changed ever since 12 years, now you have videos to help you step by step. I myself quit for around 2yrs "not a lot but still". And I quit beause I couldn't learn any tricks. I started back again this Jan, and I'm progressing really fast, I know the nollie, Ollie, Ollie switch, shuv pop shuv. Don't worry man
***** I guess so. Five years after quitting I had a one day session and hell I could still pop a kickflip after the third try. It´s kinda amazing how long muscle memory lasts!

The side by side ollie kickflip is so cool. Shows how precise a skater has to be, as even a small change in the movement has a massive effect on how the board reacts.
Not going to lie, I haven't skated in years, maybe 9 or 10. I just found my old board while sorting out my in the loft junk. Perhaps its time to get into skating again...

Thanx bro, watched heaps of other kick flip vids. Could never do this trick back in the day. I'm 39 just started skating again and today started landing em on concrete thanx to your video. Im so stoked I'm still learning but a huge thanx, your simplicity in your video is what made the difference. So what I now say to myself just before i do a kickflip is... pop, flick, commit......
For me if i do all three good enough I'll land.

I learned this trick In about two weeks after I got my ollies down good and high. Thank you Spencer. I've almost had a year of skating, after learning kickflips it really does open up to new tricks. I have my kickflips (that are as clean as his), varial flips, tre flips, front side flips, hardflips, and half cap flips. Funny thing is, I'm bearly getting my heelflips . . .

about a good 3 weeks lmao. I kept doing ollies until I could get up curbs and ollie over at least one board (I can do 3 stacked sideways)

Jesse Harding The more you ride around with your board and get familiar with it, the easier tricks will come because you'll be more comfortable. When pros like P-rod say #skateeverydamnday, thats what they mean

but see that's what im wondering. In his set up video he uses spitfire classics. but in other instructional videos he use bones wheels and states it's his favorite. Just, stuff like that makes me wonder what his actual setup preference was.

As a kid there was no you tube I never learned to Kick.. 25+ years later at the young age of 47 I just learn drilling kick flips.. In uploading a video tomorrow with my advice as a old guy. You give the best instruction on you tube though.

Varial flip was my first flip trick, but then I don't do them anymore after I learned how to kickflip

I tre flipped first now when I try kickflip I varia as well I think I'm jumping backwards causing the board to 180
OMG! Lol it only took me 3 days to land a kickflip smooth and good. I can do it every single time I try it now!!!

Nathaniel May bro I'm not saying you should quit skating, or that you should give up, but maybe skating isn't for you if it takes you a whole 3 years and you don't even have your Ollie's down
***** Nathaniel May well saying "i needed 3 years for ollies" doesnt say anything. You wont get an ollie down if you dont commit, and it will never be enough to do like 3 tries on your ollies per week. E.G. i was "trying" do do kickflips for about half a year now, but last weekend i tryharded and spent about 10 hours on praciticing, now i got them down quite well. I think nearly everyone could learn to ollie in about 5 days if he only committed hard.

But I do realize that when skating, you learn things some people never teach you. Like, just lifting your front foot up just before you pop the tail, instead of literally jumping. Most people usually leave all the wait on their front foot, which may cause the board to do thing you don't want it to do. Of-course it isn't going to guarantee you to automatically land the trick first try, but it really helps.
When ever I kickflip, the board keeps wanting to spin, like I'm trying to do a varial kickflip.
u need to put your feet a little bit up in the board then u jump a lot.
It's everything in your upper body. Keep it straight when you jump and you will see the board is not trying to rotate.
Learn a varial flip!
daniel santos he's saying, don't put your foot on the edge of the tail, but a little more in the middle. That way the board is less likely to rotate.

I got the kick down, how do you catch the board and land?
Jump high and try to get the timing right. Try to let the board flip when you're in the air and when you see it flip all the way, bring your weight down

im a 20 year old male and i want to try and get back into skateboarding. I got a decent skateboard when i was about 8/9, me and my dad built it. I learnt how to ride it comfortably and managed to do ollies and done a kickflip like 3 times but the hobby wore off a bit after about a year. I find the entire culture surrounding skateboarding very interesting and id love to try and get back into it. I practised my ollies and i think im just too scared about injuring myself because ive been very injury prone in the past - i used to rollerblade. Broke my leg and a year later i broke both my arms within 4 days of each other - so i lack confidence in pushing myself to try other tricks. Earlier today i picked up that same skateboard for the first time in 10 years and i landed an ollie and sprained my ankle pretty bad, and it just put a huge dent in my confidence and i dont want to try and skate if it just brings me pain and the inability to do other things (i ride my bike regularly) And i am looking for a new hobby. Can anyone give me any advice? I'm not asking for a way to completely avoid injury as that is ridiculous... I just want to adopt an approach to skateboarding that wont be totally consumed by the fact that i am injury prone and that i find it difficult to break on through to the other side. I just want to learn how to ollie over/onto things, a few flatground tricks etc... But need that strategy that wont fail me and make me put my skateboard back in the garage and let it collect dust.

safer. and practice on grass or something.. its really not that common that you'll get hurt unless you do something insane like stair jumps
gabriel king That'd chicken foot and if you still have trouble with that practice falling properly. Find a grass line, so if you slip out you fall in the grass then slowly move away from it. Also laying down some cardboard helped trick me into commiting.

Pop backwards
Thats what my board did while I learning the Ollie. When you pop with your backfoot, try to "kick" the backfoot a bit backwords, not directly down to the ground!
Flick straight, not up or down, and make sure you flick with your toes off the side, not the nose.
