Skip to 2:00 if you are installing 7th Heaven for the first time.
My last video has been out of date for a while but the new method is so much simpler that it wasn't really urgent to put this out, but I decided to include some extra steps on how to copy your saves and mods over from an older 7th Heaven install.
I also wanted this out there to make sure people had something to follow and make sure they're doing it right.
I hope this helps!
Download 7thDeck:

You can pick any folder to install 7th Heaven. If you don't have a Games folder, just make a folder somewhere else.
Screw the video editing. Thank you so much for making this.
Appreciate the upload, crazy i was looking to do this when the video had only been uploaded for 9 hours. The old method was far more tedious than this.
i second this. was exactly in the same position
For anyone having issues with this on Pop_OS, running "sudo apt install gawk" should fix your problem! Awesome work! Thank you so much!
A little quick when you're clicking things, but luckily RUclips has an option to slow things down. Besides that, great work, and thanks for posting!
Thanks for the video!! FF7 modded on the steam deck is super sweet!! :-)
thank you so much for this video. Steam Deck stuff is so complicated for me. This helps a lot!
Great tutorial. Thanks, here you dropped this 👑
the most easy and best explained video, thanks a lot the video help me a lot and you explaination was great
For the love of god thank you so much for this. I must have spent a total of 20hours trying to get this to work. and you create this magical file that just does it you are a god.
This was super helpful! Thank you so much.
This is so appreciated. Thanks a ton, dot.
Thank you. Just bought FF7 for my steam deck because I saw this video. Going to try some mods.
Great and clear video, thanks a lot!
This is awesome, thank you!
Gonna attempt this soon and join your discord for trouble shooting. Thanks for helping people.
FYI I did this last night successfully with a fresh install, runs flawlessly after a first couple runs to stabilize and selecting the right mod list. Having SO MUCH FUN! Thank you!
Hey, great work - method worked flawlessly for me with a new install of Steam FF VII. Question for you: is there a command line to use to 'auto play' when 7th Heaven is selected (avoiding the Game Launcher while having all of my selected mods enabled) screen? My only nitpick is trying to click that small 'Play' button whenever I launch into a game. Thanks for the guide!
You bet. You can add "/launch /quit" without quotes to the "Launch Options" of the 7th Heaven shortcut in Steam and it'll go straight to the game.
Awesome, thanks!@@dotaxis
Great video, thank you sir
Thanks so much for this! Followed this guide to a T and everything is working perfectly! I do have one question though. Is there any way to save the order of the mods on your mod list? Everytime I boot up 7th Heaven the order is all messed up and I have to manually reorganize them a certain order or else some mods dont end up working.
Auto-sort mods is enabled in Settings -> General. It must not be working as expected, so disable it.
Just so I can relay it to the mod authors, which mods are you having to reorganize manually?
@@dotaxis Disabling this fixed it, thanks! The Wictoriously Avatar Pack and Enhanced Stock UI were the ones that wouldn't work if I didn't manually set them at the top of the list. They were always automatically at the bottom. All the SYW mods were all over the place as well. Some at the top, others at the bottom. They still worked though.
Did this and just completed the game, so easy and awesome thanks! Are there any specific uninstallation instructions? Or do I just delete the files and stuff. 7th heaven is still showing up in my applications on desktop mode
Just delete the files.
To get rid of the entry in the applications, you can delete `7th Heaven.desktop` from `/home/deck/.local/share/applications`
Dude ! Thanks so much !
For anyone reading the recent comments I can confirm that this method is working perfectly as I installed on 5/25/24.
Can you move your mods from your PC (ones that were already configured and installed) to the deck after installing 7th heaven on the deck?
How long does it do the background downloads? I have 1gb Fiber and it’s been stuck on the “the script may appear to hang here” message for almost 20 minutes. Surely that’s not expected.
this happened to me aswell. To fix it just go open up the folder you made to install 7th haven. the window should pop up
No that isn't expected at all.
Please use the dev branch. I'm going to merge it into master tomorrow since no one is having issues with it.

Bonjour
Il y a des choses que je ne trouve pas comme le dossier saves et dans la recherche il n’y a pas games dans la recherche
I'm at 3 minutes into the video and I've hit the stumbling black that the 'Games' folder doesn't exist for me in Dolphin. Can I make the folder in SteamApps > Common where all my game folders are?
You can make your own Games folder, it's not there by default.
I think it's fine to put it in steamapps/common but I would recommend just making a folder on your desktop or SD card or wherever.
Good vid, thanks!
I'm just disappointed that there's no CRT mod, that's all I really wanted :/
Hi there! Thanks a lot for your work.
I feel stupid to ask but I don't know where to find those files 5:38
Its a fresh install from scratch and in the mod directory I just have temp and steamedecksetting directory.
Can you help me ?😅
Those are the files backed up at the start of the video. If you started at 2:00 because this is a fresh install, you can skip these steps. Sorry I didn't clarify
Thanks a ton!
it doesnt run on Konsole, nothing comes out.
Is there a way to launch FF7 in 7th Heaven in Gaming mode? Thanks for this amazing tutorial!
Yeah, this automatically adds a shortcut to steam which can be launched from game mode.
@@dotaxis thank you ☺️
i dont see the mod steam deck auto-config, can you tell me which to download for 60fps? i see two other 60 fps mods
60/30 FPS Gameplay is the mod you're looking for
Embarrassed to ask but I don't have a games folder? I assume that's something that autopopulates when you boot up any game, but for some reason I don't have one. I started up FF7 a few times and other games and nothing.
No, that's something I added myself.
As I said in the video, you can put the 7th Heaven folder wherever you like.
I don’t have a games folder on my deck. How do I get that folder or where do I install 7thdeck otherwise?
Like I said in the video, you can install it anywhere you want except for the FF7 install directory.
When I try to get to the Konsole section, I keep getting the error "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." I have tried completely starting over and everything, but nothing seems to work
Delete the 7th Heaven installer from ~/.cache and then try again
I am using Bazzite OS - Gnome. Is this only specific to the KDE builds?
It should work on Gnome but it won't add a desktop icon or launcher shortcut, and it may create a couple of files specific to KDE that you don't really need to worry about.
Just don't be alarmed when it throws errors on the "adding desktop and steam shortcuts" bit.
Naturally, your mileage may vary when using less popular distros like Bazzite, but I'm happy to help you get it working if you run into issues.
I have a problem, it said "Unknown error when launching the game: Access to the path 'Z:
un\media\mmcblk0p1\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\dosdevices\e:\lost+found' is denied." when I try to play it
I managed to install and run 7th deck with all mods running fine, including auto-run with analogue controls. Then foolishly I tried to run og ff7 on my deck thinking my save file would be the same across both versions. Then when I tried to open 7th heaven the steam deck control inputs were not registering no matter what I did. But oddly desktop mode was still running fine. No matter what steam controller inputs changes I made desktop was not working. Now eventually a community layout for 7th heaven control input is working, but auto run no longer works. Is there anything I can do?
A Steam Linux Runtime update seems to have broken the controls somehow. I'm working on a fix and will reply when I have one.
Edit: master has been updated with a fix. Please disregard this comment and install 7thDeck normally.
Just an update, you can install 7thDeck using the dev branch to fix the controls issue.
github.com/dotaxis/7thDeck/tree/dev
Still working on a fix for master.
Hello,
Any reports of 7th Heaven crashing whenever trying to sort mod order or go into the settings menu? 7th Heaven just freezes and I have to spam the cross until it gives me an exit prompt. I’ve done multiple reinstalls following the steps and get the same results.
I've just pushed an update to 7thDeck which may fix this.
Please redownload and reinstall and if it still doesn't work, use Game Mode until I can find a fix.
Thanks for getting back quickly. Ended up using game mode and works fine. If I end up having to reinstall it in the future I'll test on the desktop. Been working great though!
YO i've got a problem, i have installed Proton 7 but the konsol with install cannot find it ??????
Restart steam and try again
I keep getting the failed to mount disc error.
Great guide! I am now able to launch via Gaming mode.... is there a way to get FF7 image on the 7th heaven launcher in steam game mode??
Yeah you can use the SteamGridDB plugin for decky loader
@@dotaxisLegend! This was the ticket and thanks!
I only have one issue now… for some reason I have a conflict in the Tweaks modification that won’t let me run the ‘always run’ option.
It doesn’t say what other mod is causing this though…
Any ideas? For reference I’m on steamdeck and all other mods are fine (as far as I can tell)
@@CJD87You need to use the Steam Deck Auto-Run which is listed right below it.
You don't need this when using Steam Deck Auto-Config because analogue_run is enabled by that already, which allows you to walk or run depending on how far from the center you move the joystick.
So I followed your steps and got all my mods loaded, the game launches when I open 7th deck from the desktop icon just fine, but when I run it from steam in desktop mode it does not open. Same if I run 7th heaven from game mode.
Do I need to change the compatibility to Proton experimental or something for 7th heaven?
You shouldn't make any changes to the 7th Heaven shortcut. If you set it to launch with any version of Proton, that's why it's not working.
@@dotaxis even when I try to launch it without compatability on, it won't launch from steam. Why is that?
@@autoxguyI don't know. You may have broken the shortcut somehow. Try running 7thDeck again and just pick the same folder for 7th Heaven that you did before. This time don't mess with the steam shortcut
@@dotaxis OK did it again and got running.
Hey dot, I couldn’t find my “games” folder in the desktop. Should I just create a folder for that?
You can put it anywhere, I just picked my games folder
@@dotaxis thanks, got it running already actually :) using your mod there too. Loving the game so much cause of your tutorial. Thank YOU Dot! ^^
For some reason when I launch through Steam (non-steam, 7th heaven, play) the game launches with no mods enable. I get the FFN splash but graphics, music are all vanilla and I get no prompts for new threat mode.
Update: None of the mods work even when launching through 7th heaven in desktop mode
Update 2: It seems as though my 60 fps mods will load but nothing else will.
Update 3: Fixed it! Just ran the installer through Konsole again
I’m following along but every time I try to launch proton I get an error message that says, “An error occurred while launching this game: invalid app configuration. Help!
What do you mean launch proton? Nowhere in the video do I say anything about doing that
I messed up. Lol. Thanks for getting me to watch it again.
I followed this guide to a "T" on my Steam Deck. The game launch through 7Th Heaven launcher, and it's playable, but none of the mods are working.
Open a terminal and run the following:
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 39140 dinput
If you get errors post them here. If you don't get errors, try running the game with mods again.
I removed everything and started over, and now it works, no idea what could have happened there, but hey it's working now :P @@dotaxis
Hey Dot! Great tutorial! Totally got it all to work! I was wondering if you or anyone else on here could tell me how to get the Speed Step Hack to work on steam deck? I'm using a Xbox series s controller, and when I input L3 or pushing down on the left joystick, it enables Speed step, but the speed stays exactly the same. I tried changing GPU's from DirectX to Vulcan and OpenGL and nothing changed it. Any ideas?
Leave the graphics driver on auto or vulkan.
You have to disable the framerate limiter in the battery/performance menu in game mode to get speed hack to work. You may also have to turn on the "allow tearing" setting, but I can't remember if that's strictly necessary.
@@dotaxis Thank you. That totally worked! Forgot that I had the frame limiter on!
Hey dotAXIS. Thanks for your work dude!
Sadly I also run into issues. While first install works fine the game couldn't boot via 7th heaven and I thought maybe because I played the game by a family account member. So I baught it, reinstall and now I couldn't start 7th heaven. It's asking for .NET runtime. I installed the asked version via link and download but 7th heaven keeps asking for it.
Any ideas?
Please download the script again from GitHub. I've added logging to a file called "7thDeck.log"
Run the script again and if it still doesn't work, upload your 7thDeck.log to pastebin and post the link here so I can get an idea of what's happening.
Don't know why but my comment with link isn't shown here...
Tried it two times and everything looks OK, but when I check by reload or with phone the comment isn't there. Can I send you the link somwhere else?

are you able to obtain achievements while unsing this mods?
Yes
Hello, I’m having some issues with this method and was wondering if you could help.
1) I ran a fresh install of Final Fantasy 7 1997 (bought through Steam).
2) I ran the game once.
3) I ran the installer through Konsole but it just tells me that Proton 7.0 isn’t found. It says it's opening Steam to download Proton 7.0 but it just hangs up and nothing happens.
4) I checked Steam and I already seem to have Proton 7 installed.
I can’t get any farther than that. Any word be appreciated.
Delete all of the following folders:
1. /run/media/mmcblk0p1/steamapps/common/SteamLinuxRuntime_soldier
2. /run/media/mmcblk0p1/steamapps/common/Proton 7.0
3. /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/SteamLinuxRuntime_soldier
4. /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton 7.0
If any of them are missing don't worry, just delete what's there out of those 4.
Then in Steam, find "Proton 7" and "Steam Linux Runtime 2.0 (soldier)" and verify integrity of both of them via right-click -> Properties -> Installed Files -> Verify integrity of tool files
Once you've done that try running 7thDeck installer again.
@@dotaxis Thank you for taking the time to reply and troubleshoot the issue.
I was able to locate and delete the second and third folders you mentioned, and then I followed the rest of the steps you laid out. The installer still attempted to open Steam to download Proton 7, but it claimed there was not an internet connection. The Internet itself was working fine.
Now, I’m new to Steam and the Deck so please forgive the ignorance here, but the only places I found Run->Media folders was under Devices ->rootfs and Devices-> var.
If I’m not looking in the right spot, I apologize. That’s the only aspect I felt shaky about when following your directions.
Okay, I was able to get it working. I unmounted my micro sd card to ensure that all the files were on the Steam Deck and that worked. I appreciate your help!
@@dotaxis where in steam do i find those files? im having the same issue, i deleted all the files i could find but cant for the life of me find the files to verify in steam
@@MrImaWizard are you looking for the files or for Proton 7 and Steam Linux Runtime in Steam? You can find the apps in Steam using the search button. You can find the files by double clicking the top of Dolphin and copy/pasting the paths in the text box
For some reason I can't get it to start FFVII through 7th. It just goes to "Verifying game files" and hands my deck completely. Keyboard, mouse, and controller stop working. It still does this after reinstalling. Any ideas?
Check inside your FF7 install directory and make sure there isn't a folder in there called "FINAL FANTASY VII"
If there is, delete it and then try again
@@dotaxis Thanks, I ended up uninstalling, deleting all the remaining directories manually, and then reinstalling, and it works great.
@@axessdenyd sorry, I never got a notification about your comment so I just saw it yesterday :(
@@dotaxis That's fine, YT is not great about sending notiications all the time. Thanks a lot for providing the updated install method, it's so much eaiser than using Bottles (plus when I first tried the old method, the version of bottles installed by Discover was actually bugged so it wouldn't open the YAML file anyway)
I was able to follow this guide and it worked for me. However, I then accidentally opened the normal ff7 and not 7th heaven today. Now, it utilizes my old character models despite launching 7th heaven. Any way to undo this?
You should be able to launch vanilla FF7 without causing problems for 7th Heaven, but you can try just re-running 7thDeck and selecting the same directory you already have 7th Heaven installed in. It will reapply all the fixes to the proton prefix without losing anything, but it will add a second Steam shortcut (which you can remove).
@@dotaxis thanks! I ended up just backing up my mods as you instructed and reinstalling 7th Deck. Worked wonderfully.
@@MistrMojoRisin Glad that worked! Next time there is no need to back up your mods as long as you don't delete the 7th Heaven folder. 7thDeck will simply overwrite the files already there and won't touch the mods directory.
are these steps the same for echos9 with moguri mod?
No
This is great. Makes installing to steam deck effortless. One issue I’m having however is that no matter what settings I adjust in 7th heaven, the game renders in 4:3 only. Tried Both docked and undocked. Has anyone else run into this issue. I’ve also made sure that both 7th heaven and ffnx are on stable and up to date
I broke the Steam Deck Auto-Config mod on the last update and the catalogs haven't been updated yet, so for now just uninstall that mod and then redownload it from the catalog
Thanks! The installer works fine but it skips the dotnet step and I can't launch the launcher without it. How can i install dotnet manually, or force 7thdeck to install it?

@@Little_Shovel I've made a bunch of changes to the Linux branch since this question was initially asked.

@@dotaxis thanks for the reply! I'll download the dev branch and let you know how it goes
been a while but it worked thanks for doing this
7th deck does not function for me, there's an error with the curl (no url) and it doesn't end up installing the program because the URL is missing.
I've installed both ff7 (steam) and 7th heaven, and connected the steam install and the mod library folder, but I can't get 7th heaven to actually launch because it has a disc requirement (in 2024 lol wtf). I've attempted to mount the faux iso in several areas to no avail and cannot seem to get 7H to actually launch the game under any circumstances (I attempted to place the contents of the manually installed 7h into the empty folder the 7th deck bash failed to install too and had no success with that either)
7thDeck does a lot more than just run the installers and point to the right directories. A manual install is not really worth the trouble.
If you join the Discord we can help figure out what is going on with your error but it's not something I can diagnose via RUclips comments.

I could swear I followed your instructions (well, I installed it in my SteamApps Common folder, instead of making a Games folder), but 7th Heaven is not showing up in Steam for me 🤔... Obviously I won't be able to run it in Gaming Mode if it's not in Steam, right...?
Not sure why the shortcut creation fails sometimes. If you at least get a desktop icon, you can just click on "Add a non-steam game" in Steam and then browse to the folder you installed 7th Heaven to and select "7th Heaven.sh"
Do not select a proton version and do not try to select the .exe instead of the .sh
If these steps are confusing you can try just running the 7thDeck installer again and overwriting your current 7th Heaven directory. It'll preserve any mods you have downloaded.
@@dotaxis I already tried both the .exe and the .sh, but neither worked. The .sh seemed to work, but not really (I couldn't use my track pad--only the toich-screen--and it wouldn't do anything when I hit "play"). I ended up right clicking the icon on the desktop and that worked.
...but now I can't get it to actually play the game. I could swear I did everything the same way you did in the video (aside from having to manually add the game to Steam), but the path for the game .exe was wrong, so I had to fix that, but it didn't actually work. I no longer get the error messages, but it doesn't actually launch the game. It *says* that it successfully launched the game, but it doesn't actually launch 🤦🏻♂️...
I may have to try running the installer again... Thanks 😊👍🏻.
