Never hard code a version number. One of the few reason video tutorials are broken, but not even a written tutorial should say "install this specific version" unless it's an actual fix to a very specific problem. Just use normal proton built-in for everything. You only ever need to change any setting if something doesn't work, or to set the default proton version for other games not marked as supported, to do that, just select the latest release that doesn't have experimental or " RC" (release candidate) in the name. Those are betas/snapshots. You don't need to download GloriousEggroll's fork unless you want to play a specific game that has been patched in the GE fork but not yet made it's way into Proton official. This would only be for quite new games. Maybe it gives a smidge of performance improvement, but you will likely not notice and not worth your time.

Honestly all this really fucked with my SteamDeck. Epic crashes after login consistently, and somehow when I switched up the Proton versions, Steam started to fail to initiate. After another version switch, my EmuDeck library disappeared from Steam. No clue what’s happening here.
I’ve got 2 questions, 1. Is proton safe to use? I’ve downloaded epic on my deck using this method and works fine so far but I just get paranoid when using the app just in case something goes wrong with my deck lol 2. Would I be able to delete proton and it still work? Or would I have to keep it in my library in order for epic to run?
Proton ge which is the proton used in this video is built on the same proton that valve developed just with some added tweaks from the community. It is useful for running games that won’t run with valves official version of proton. And yes it is safe

It usually means something is up with proton or the paths aren't right. Make sure you've got the quotes at the start and end, and make sure the start in only goes to the folder, not the file

The games themselves are hit and miss. I'm pretty sure I read some anti cheat stuff blocks Fortnite working on Steam Deck, otherwise I'd definitely have used an image of that in the thumbnail
If you get the Xbox game pass working on steam deck, there you can play Fortnite. However, the one drawback is that if many people are playing, then there may be an incredibly long wait time to play. I’ve found this to be my only way of playing Fortnite on steam deck so it doesn’t really bother me. I’m just happy to be able to play it at times

that jump cut at 3:20 fucked me all up. i accidently went through the whole process but in the browse option through steam and im hella stuck because i cant just copy paste into there for some reason and it wont let me type into the box at all
It does that sometime, especially with the on screen keyboard. Usually if you just close it down and try again it works. I'm pretty sure there is a paste button on the on screen keyboard too

I got everything installed, but I can not get the gamepad to register commands. It only works with mouse and keyboard in the Epic Games menu. once I load the game its fine but I cant select anything unless I have a mouse hooked up.

Yea I had similar issues the first time. Copying and pasting into those fields with the Steam Deck can be a bit hit and miss. Use a mouse if you can. If not, try doing in both desktop mode and big screen mode, which ever you didn't do last time. Bear in mind there is a paste button on the virtual keyboard to the right of space bar, I found that to be more reliable If it's still playing up, go into desktop mode, and open up a notepad, and try copying and pasting it into there, then editing it in the notepad and pasting it back across. Lastly, and not ideal, but the way I had to do it first time, as I had none of these tips, is to just type the entire text manually. Good luck
Make sure you're trying to launch it in game mode rather than desktop mode. Check the path in the target in properties points to where your Epic Games installed, don't copy my path. Make sure it's got the quotes around it. If it installed OK that step has got to be where your problem is.
After the whole installation, when I try to run epic launcher it does the steam loading animation and goes straight back to the launcher page, so basically I can’t actually get into epic. Does anyone know what causes this?
Hmm not really sure what to advise as you can't really go wrong by that point, maybe just try restaet your Steam Deck or updating it, but it definitely works with GE Proton 8-4

Sorry dude, I'm old school, my only knowledge of cheating in games is using a Game Genie. You definitely can't play *any* game though. Like everything on Steam Deck, some stuff just isn't gonna work.
Yea a few people have said that. All I can think is that it's defaulting somewhere else for some reason. If you have a look at the path during the installation step it should give you an idea of where it's putting it. It won't be exact as the folder structure is a bit different, but you should be able to find it from what it says combined with where I said it was

Steamdeck Oled. Doesn't work. Epic just shows a grey box with the "Now available: free game" popup in the bottom right of the screen and that's it.

When I open fortnite it says the game was opened incorrectly to open it from the epic games app and the game closes.

After the whole installation, when I try to run epic launcher it does the steam loading animation and goes straight back to the launcher page, so basically I can’t actually get into epic. Does anyone know what causes this?
Maybe try a different version of proton, or double check that the path is correct

The installer doesn’t launch with GE proton 8-4, after press play nothing happened 😢
Hmm not really sure what to advise as you can't really go wrong by that point, maybe just try restaet your Steam Deck or updating it, but it definitely works with GE Proton 8-4

I searched through all of my files inside compact data but I couldn’t find epic games 3:56
what i did was click each and everyone one of them until i found the right one, it worked for me. epic games eventually popped up

Sorry dude, I'm old school, my only knowledge of cheating in games is using a Game Genie. You definitely can't play *any* game though. Like everything on Steam Deck, some stuff just isn't gonna work.

Yea a few people have said that. All I can think is that it's defaulting somewhere else for some reason. If you have a look at the path during the installation step it should give you an idea of where it's putting it. It won't be exact as the folder structure is a bit different, but you should be able to find it from what it says combined with where I said it was

Launch it, install it. Then when it's installed open the properties menu again. Leave it open and then go find the file you just installed
