Just because PD may not have been as physically as imposing as the rest of the diamonds, but she was still just as powerful. She also shows extreme intelligence an manipulation skills. I would even goes so far as to say her miniscule size gave her an advantage. She looks fragile and sweet, and has also been eager to prove herself to the other diamonds. She may not have been the same size as the rest, but she wasn't wrong. If I had to describe her, I'd use the same phrasing as Bismuth: PD is a deepcut. The deeper you cut a gem, the more brilliant it shines, and has a lot more color/pigmented look to it. It's richer; almost more pure.

Amethyst is defective but she comes off as more capable than normal amethysts. So even if PD is defective, it definitely doesn't make her weak like Homeworld would say/think.

She reminds me of most stereotypes about short people; despite her appearance and physical looks of youth and innocence, but strong, and very concentrated in strength and power. (Also the whole “closer to Hell” thing, cause of the whole manipulation, cunning thing. Sorry, that’s less serious than the rest.) that’s just my idea, and I had the same feeling with Amethyst and PS (Off Color Saph, I cannot spell.)
I always thought of Pink as an off color, considering her other diamonds are in fact the primary colors while Pink is not
The color pink is more of a secondary color, a mixture of white and red, an off color per say, so the fact of Pink being an off color gem would just makes sense, at least in my perspective it does

to me, it looked like the diamond authority's color scheme revolved more around the additive secondary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow) considering the colors seemed to line up more cleanly, but this is also an interesting take!! also raises more questions for white diamond because rgb makes up white light (fusion??)

Also, Red Diamonds are the most Rare Diamonds that exist. They could have been thinking an even more large and amazing diamond, and got an overcooked pink one instead of a groundbreaking Red one.

She could've felt that way because of how blue and yellow treated her because of her size and/or because of her adoration for them.
Well they say that a gems physical form reflects their mental state so what if Pink Diamond is just small because she had a child like state of mind at first? We have never seen Blue or Yellow Diamond when they were first made so what if they were smaller as well but grew and changed as their minds did?

P_O_T_A_T_O -_- Kinda but not on the same level. Amethyst can only hold her shapeshifting abilities for a few hours max while Pink Diamond is able to do it for literal *years* at a time. Amethyst is actually defective and I suppose the same could be said for PD, but their abilities are in two different league.
My mini theory is that Pink Diamond isn’t defective-but the other diamonds make her feel defective; that they make her feel like an inferior to them. She isn’t defective-but the other diamonds already have their own images of flawlessness imprinted into them at “birth”-and, I’m unsure if they feel as though that she fits their view of perfection as a diamond-thus why they treat her more as a child that a peer/equal
So she could, potentially, see herself as defective or useless-like she can’t fit the shoes of being a diamond/strict Commander
Akin to how Steven couldn’t see himself as able to fit/step into Rose’s shoes as the leader of The Crystal Gems-due to his already perceived view of what his mother was-a great, strong, dependable, and intellectual leader
But, after some time, he saw that his mother wasn’t as great or as amazing as everyone painted her to be
And, going back to Pink Diamond/Rose-maybe she saw the same thing as Steven did-she May have seen that the diamonds weren’t perfect-that they just put up the front of being perfect to their subjects within order to maintain power over gem kind
And, upon her seeing this, she decided enough was enough
And tried leading her way
Which would be a really unique way for Steven to go-instead of trying to be Pink/Rose-he could lead The Crystal Gems his way-and try to make peace with Homeworld-instead of Pink’s view of just staying far away from it
I think as a Diamond she would have grown as she gained more colonies. After acquiring Earth she seemed to grow.

Well, in "Jungle Moon" she was about the same height as Stevonnie. But in "A Single Pale Rose" we suddenly see her twice the height of Pearl.
She definitely grew.
I think diamonds grow with their maturity level and experiences like Steven did in So Many Birthdays. He did a Diamond like thing with a human twist to it.

I feel like Pink Diamond’s court represented the misfits.... if she was a misfit, then those they deemed flawed went to her. That would explain why everyone, including other gems liked pink bc she took them in when they would have otherwise been destroyed. Like Jasper said, u have to fit in the diamond authority. Without pink, there is no place for those flawed. Idk, thats just what im 🤔 thinking right now. Even if pink wasnt a planned defect, they still could use her to toss aside the gens the other diamonds dont want.
RedVulture Drawing I don't think that is the case, because Pink Diamond staging her shattering would possibly result in the destruction of her "useless" and leaderless defective gems, who would no longer have a place. I doubt that Pink would put all of her defective wards at risk by cutting herself out of the picture. The exception I guess would be if she thought that Blue or other Diamonds would be merciful toward them, or that they could somehow take refuge on Earth.

Holly Blue said that Blue Diamond has been maintaining the human zoo since the dawn of era 2. Which would mean that Pink Diamonds shattering took place before era 2. Era 2 was caused be Pink diamonds shattering.
Undernet That makes sense! That would also help explain why White would be larger (if she is) for she might have come from a time where resources were much more plentiful.

i remember watching a video, i think it was this one, but it said something about her emerging AFTER her mural was painted, but i also realized that those circles in the mural represent the planets they have colonized, meaning the mural was painted AFTER she recieved earth. the two circles in her mural represent earth and the moon, and in everyone elses mural represent different planets
I believe that Pink Diamond was the most powerful of the Diamond Authority tetra; she can heal cracked and possibly shattered gems; she can control the rate of friction at which she fell based on emotion aka floating; she can also bend plant life to her will while also giving it humanoid form; all yellow can do is shoot lightning from her fingers INQUISITIVELY; I mean does yellows lightning even have a purpose other that wide range combat; does she have a power that may be suitible for HOMEWORLDS well-being other than violent occasions such as war or invasion; blue is able to bend peoples emotion to her will, but again what good can it do for the well-being of HOMEWORLD; only Pink Diamond and of coarse possibly White Diamond have powers that may prove useful to the difficulties yet to come on future colonized worlds.

That’s really unlikely. Sure, Pink is probably one of the most powerful gems we’ve seen on the show but we never really saw what the other diamonds are really capable of. Yellow was able to instantly poof a gem with her lightning and Blue was able to affect two diamonds (and all the minor gems) with her emotional powers. Both of those were clearly just a fraction of their real powers. I’m sure we’ll see even more OP feats from them soon enough now that PD is revealed to be Rose Quartz. Pink might not be the most powerful diamond out there but out of all of them, she is definitely the most versatile (and the one with the most potential) based on Steven’s own feats.

Yellow diamond is all about glass cannon dealing high damage quickly and effectively

I think one of the theory I still enjoy is that Pink was supposed to be Red Diamond, as well as normal sized like Yellow or Blue. If she came out smaller than expected and a different color, then the defective narrative would make more sense but...We don't have any evidence of that. If there's another flashback or something that explains the process of how to make a diamond or how specifically Pink was made, Then That would really help!
I'm surprised that people are not talking about the size change of Pink between Jungle Moon and A Pale Rose. Do Diamonds grow as they age? White is believed by the fandom to be the oldest and she is the biggest. Blue and Yellow are nearly the same size and depicted as the older sisters of their bratty younger sister Pink that White probably maded them babysit.
We believe that the Diamonds popped out of the ground like the rest of the Gems just more powerful. Maybe they don't and that is a reason why they are more powerful. Why it was unthinkable that they could be shattered.

Maria Elena It can't be just art style. In Jungle Moon we have a known height for where Pink punched in relation to how tall Stevonnie is. We know how tall Stevonnie is to Pearl and how tall Pearl is to Pink in A Pale Rose. Pink has gotten tall in that time.

Earnest Brown thank you I was also thinking this I believe that diamonds can grow over time and once they reach a certain age of over a least a few thousands of years they do not grow no more because they are different from normal gems they don't have to follow the normal like how Pink Diamond was able to make her gemstone look like a rose quartz gem for thousands of years and no one knew the difference I believe. remember when pink diamond was in the desert with the lions that might be a small tabit that while she was out there alone she might've form back into original form because she is growing still and probably stopped before Steven was born cause she reached her max height. We really don't know what diamonds are capable of they are beyond that and white is probably above the normal diamonds because she is the first diamond probably the original gem but I digress just a lot of gaps in this and I can't prove it but this seems to me a possible headcanon.
The height was inconsistent even from one section to another of Jungle Moon. First, when YD had the appearance of Connie's mom, she seemed to have the height of a pearl. The next scene, when the appearance of yellow changed, she was taller and similar to recent episodes.
You know, I actually have a theory that Pink Diamond is not defective. Maybe she was supposed to be that size. And I think the diamonds size is caused by gem placement. The higher the gem placement, the taller. And since White Diamond has the highest gem placement, she is the tallest diamond. And Yellow and Blue are the same size because they have the same gem placement. And since Pink Diamond has the lowest gem placement, she is the smallest, thus therefore, making it seem she's defective.

They might mean that she was formed more recently than Yellow or Blue and therefore is still rather childlike, which is backed up by her behavior in flashbacks or just the scenes between Pink Diamond and Blue Diamond, for example.

Well she is still a diamond. Defective or not, she is still a more “powerful” gem compared to the rest of the gems so it would make more sense that she still has many powers.

Pink Diamond *is* defective. She's defective by Homeworld's standards. It's not *just* her short stature. It's also in her character design. She is designed to look like a clown: The poofy hair, the poofy pants, the little poofs on her shoes. Clowns wore that. Another way she could be deemed defective is in her character. She's impulsive, a little (or very, depending on how you look at it) selfish, and doesn't always hold herself accountable. By what we've all seen, it's implied that Diamonds are meant to be calm, and collected. Diamonds are the leaders of conquest, and when you look at PD she doesn't fit the bill.
On top of that, the other Diamonds have known PD longer than we have, and if they're treating PD this way then there must be something wrong with her, in their eyes. *However*, just because PD is defective, it doesn't diminish her narrative in any way. In fact, I think that the message is actually that "being defective doesn't diminish a person's importance or their brilliance." Another message could be that "you can be special in your own way; you don't need to conform to society's standards (Homeworld's standards)."

I said that it's not just in her appearance. Her personality is too impulsive, and unpredictable for the conformist mindset that is Homeworld culture. We kind of have to take all of this into account anyway because the devil is in the details. Based on PD's overall design and the fact that her personality is nothing like any of the Homeworld gems, we can safely assume that she was meant to be written as wrong in the eyes of Homeworld. Besides, there's more evidence backing up the theory that she's defective than evidence against it.
One could argue that she's super powerful, and because of that she's not defective. But that doesn't really prove that she isn't...? Of course she's powerful, she's a *Diamond*. Diamonds are meant to be more powerful than the average gem.
Based on the size difference of pink diamond before and after getting her first colony I think it could be possible that the more colonies you have the bigger you get. I mean, white diamond is the largest and has the most colonies, blue and yellow are the same and have the same amount of colonies. Pink was the youngest and still immature, at some point she got earth, grew bigger and also seems a bit more mature (at least she is not throwing tantrums like in "jungle moon").
I think she is small on purpose. White Diamond is at the top of the insignia, and she is the largest Diamond. Yellow and Blue are both on the middle, and seem equal in both size and power. Pink is on the bottom, so her being small and having less authority than her fellow diamonds makes sense.

Amethyst could be considered defective, because she has a smaller physical form than the rest of the famethysts. That said there's actually a lot of variation amongst the famethysts, there's short ones and tall skinny ones, slightly off-color ones, etc. Maybe rose/pink just had sympathy for those ones as well.

I disagree with the idea that PD being defective/off-colored would take away from her message. So many other characters have done a lot and grown a lot in the series despite their more obvious defects and I think that's what the crew is trying to get across here--especially since we got Paddy, who has shown value despite what she does. Times like these, I remember when people thought Rose saying "my pearl" was looking down on Pearl as if she owned her, but Rebecca Sugar later confirmed it to be the opposite with the possessive "my" being a form of respect. Can never be too sure :) Another thing I was thinking about in response is...
Veering off to another less concrete argument that relies on symbolism: the NFPA diamond has red in it and the diamond insignia closely resembles that, so that kind of has me wondering if Pink Diamond was supposed to come out differently. We also know unusually small size to be correlated with overcooking, like with Amethyst, so I don't think that PD's size might just had to do with the crew just wanting to make her Rose. Also pink diamonds IRL have warped structure from compression. Another thing is Yellow and Blue have obvious small flaws in their personality--with gems all saying the diamonds are perfect beings and the show illustrating ways they exactly AREN'T, I'm super curious to see White Diamond, because in real life the yellow and blue color of diamonds is due to the presence of impurities. Is White Diamond really perfect??? Haha

I think that since Pink Diamond was small the diamonds almost shattered her on sight but then decided that they should watch over her at all times. I think that was one of the reasons why she wanted to take the presence, person of rose Quarts.

Why is being smaller a disadvantage to a diamond? Being smaller makes amethyst defective because she is suppose to be a powerful soldier. A diamond is not a soldier.
For example, Aquamarine outranks Topaz despite being smaller.

On the episode Jungle Moon she was a bit whiny and acted like a child, wanting a planet. In the episode Rose's room, Steven wanted to play mini golf with the gems but they said they were busy and it "wasn't fair". Pink Diamond said it "wasn't fair" that she couldn't get what she wanted, in the end of the episode of Rose's room, Steven says "I always get what I want."
I don't know what to think of this but it is kinda strange.

I think her small size was meant to convey her temperament. She's very child-like, so why not look like a child compared to the other diamonds?

It could just be that she was a tad over cooked. So while she was smaller, she had a thicker, more elaborate gem and had more impressive abilities than the ideal cut like Blue or Yellow. Aka her amazing shapeshifting and multiple powers. So being over cooked made her less significant to the diamonds, but she was still imposing and amazing to regular gems so it wouldnt have mattered to them how large she was. If anything they may have loved her more for being more relatable.
Technically she is off colored based on the diamond authority, since she a rebel and all.

Well considering that on Jungle moon she seems to have been smaller given the location of the fractured window, how she was nearly twice the size of Pearl in a Single Pale Rose, and how we've seen Steven change age and size due to his self perception and maturity, it's entirely possible Pink diamond was still growing in size as her perception and the other diamond's perceptions of her changed..
I think she’s a defective/off diamond is because she isn’t a primary color like white blue and yellow. She’s two colors mixed in. Plus it you look at their hands at 3:45 you see whites pointing upwards maybe showing how she’s the strongest and better, so are yellow. I believe yellows hands are pointing up because she thinks when white is gone she’ll be in charge. Blues hands are up and down like she’s in the middle. Looked down upon but still is treated right. Then pinks, hers is down and she is being looked down by everyone

Can gems grow?
This is a question I've had in my mind for some time. When you look at Jungle Moon, you can easily see that the glass breaks at the same level Stevonnie would punch. Isn't Rose Quartz bigger than Garnet, and Rose smaller than her Diamond form? Pink diamond is still quite big compared to Pearl. I'm trying to compare sizes here, and something doesn't add up...
Actually there is a moment where you do see gems rotating during transformations. Watch the episodes with Topaz when she combines in the episode I Am My Mom. During the fight between Connie and Steven versus both Topaz, there is a part when both the Topaz gems are on the inside when they are split apart and are standing side by side, but when they combine, they rotate so they are on the outside but still on the same side they started. They rotated then and there, and not only that, if a singular Topaz had their gem on they're right, it was on the left, opposite side for the fusion when formed. That is it. That small detail which, perhaps hinted at the fact that gems can rotate and change their position.

Another thing I wanna say is the gem shape is strange compared to yellow and blue, and also we can assume that she should have powers considering all the diamonds we’ve seen so far have shown them (I believe the corruption wave was a combining of yellow, blues and whites “special abilities” ). She’s also much less mature than the other diamonds, which is something we also see in amethyst, so I’m thinking maybe defective sized gems may have personality differences too? I’m just throwing stuff out there, but your theory is pretty solid
and pink is a mixture of red and white so maybe shes off colour or has been idk somehow fused with a white gem during her creation

I'd say it's more with the fact that she's younger than the other diamonds, like amethyst in the flashbacks? While she's still short she has clearly grown from that time, plus, pink diamond clearly had the mentality of a rebellious child

I have a theory that Pink's powers are affected by her emotions, like Steven's are. So maybe Pink's stature is so small because she is made to feel small by the other diamonds. My theory for this is furthered by the thought that the human part of Steven has mutated this ability so that instead of changing size based on his feelings, Steven changes in age.
The thing I find most interesting about Pink is that all of her powers eg. healing, re/animation of organic life, floating, empathy, dream connectinf with other minds and her shield I want to know what all of that says about the Pink Diamond that exsisted as soon as she came from the ground and the difference it makes compared to Rose Quartz
Also the fact that Pink has all of those powers proves that the Diamonds have WAY more powers for us to see and I can't wait!!! :D
Oh and I know this has nothing to do with the video or my comment but I just wanted to point out that in the trial when Blue Diamond let off her emotional aura a lot of people say that Lars wasn't affected by it because he was human or the bubble, and more people (as far as I know) are saying because he's human, but that just doesn't make sense since YD's destabilization ability is based purely on the form of a gem which based on the destabilizers that peridot used on steven won't work because of his organic human form
BD's empathy abilities are purely based on emotion which obviously both humans and gems have so with all that in mind the reason Lars was not affected by Blue Diamonds aura is the Yellow Zircon's bubble placed around his head it shielded his mind from BD's empathy
I feel like White and/or Blue and Yellow wanted to test out a diamond who could grow OR they had also grown once upon a time and are just so old it seems like they've always been big. There are so many questions!!!
I kinda figured a White vs Pink comparison could be like a Jasper vs Amethyst comparison--like, how Jasper came out different from the standard in the opposite way, as "the Ultimate Quartz".
I mean I still don't think there's really enough evidence of to definitively say that she was defective, but I do think that would be an interesting idea that would be really to see developed. Maybe it could even be used to help pacify Sapphire.

i still think she may have been a deep cut like Amethyst, since there's a bit of parallels in terms of their powers and such, and plus ir someone on tumblr pointed out that her gem was indeed a deep cut irl so lmao

In comparison to Stevonnie and Pearl, Pink definitely grew between the Jungle Moon flashback and the Single Pale Rose flashback. She was almost three times Pearl's size in A Single Pale Rose, whereas in Jungle Moon she was the same height as Stevonnie (about a head taller than Pearl).
So, seeing as diamonds in reality grow as they get older, I definitely think the same happens in SU with the gems.
In the sense of physicality, you have a great point. In the sense of her defecting from Homeworld, ehhhh. She covered it up, but, we know the truth.

well she is still have powers that both yellow and blue doesn't have, she can somehow connect with organic life, she can restrict the dead and heal bot injuries and not fully defective gems but I'm foreseeing steven doing that in the future, and can produce a shield which can withstand the power of the three diamonds combined together she has a power far more stronger than her size
We’ve never seen White diamonds face reaction. Like in that one silhouette of them seeing that Pink had been shattered? White Diamond is always shown face forward. White Diamond could have given Pink the idea of being ‘Rose’.

I have a whole theory on "defective" gems and why some gems like Amethyst are considered defective but ones like Peridot aren't. I don't rlly want to write an essay in the comments section, but I might make a Tumblr post, or a video on it.
Hey I wonder if the diamonds truly knew how unique pink was? For example aside from changing shape, her healing tears to be precise .. if the connection was made during the war or anytime after, how different could things have been. I wish I could ask that to miss suger, so I hope you read this and ponder well.
I have a few theories. What if white diamond's gem is like pink's but the other way, since pink diamonds in real life are supposed to be white diamonds but overcooked. Also what if topaz sings escapism? How about blue when she finds out Steven is pink? Or even pink diamond singing it

What if pink was ment to be small just like white was probably supposed to be bigger. even the gem placement makes sense. white is at the top pink is at the bottom and blue and yellow are at the sides. When their gems are put together like this they resemble a shape of a diamond

Seeing how OP Steven is, if Pink Diamond were to be defective, I don't think we could even comprehend White Diamond's powers.
The parrogram diamonds show where their gems are place like for example White Diamond has her gem on the head, so it is at the top of the parrogram yellow and blues gems are on their chests so their on the side and pinks is on her belly button so hers is at the bottom

I’m thinking that there was a purple diamond that created pink but her experiment was ruined by white cuz she didn’t like the idea of another diamond for some reason. And that it would have caused pink’s gem to shrink and turn a lughter shade of red. But this is just some crazy little story/theory that I came up with. It’d be cool if this was in the last season or movie though😁😊

The only thing I can't understand is why on Stevonie dream, Pink and Stevonie has the same size, but when Pearl show her memories for Steven, and later when Pink first Shape Shifted on Rose, the size is really different. Gems can't get old, but I do remember on the Greg Flashback when he told Steven how he met his mom, Amethyst was smaller than she is now. So, I don't know if it's inconsistency or if Gems with certain potential just can Reform taller than before sometimes. At some point, Pink was smaller, and then just shape shifted to be bigger? That would make sense IF Rose isn't exactly the same amount of mass of Pink's body since Pink is really thin and Rose is more large in comparation. I don't know, sometimes I get really angry with those things, I wish just one person to make the drawings for the animations sometimes.
I have a theory of the movie villian identity Pink Diamond fake her shattering a long time ago but maybe another Diamond was in the makes right after and it is going to popped out of the ground during the movie.
I honestly think since rose was pink diamond and had a child maybe diamond can have children and pink is the child of blue diamond (blue seems to be a moaning mother) and maybe pink was still so young but felt she was responsible enough to have her own planet. This is only if my other theory isn't true
I think it's possible, but I saw a White Diamond fan portrayal with traces of colors reflected from her head and I'm starting to rethink that.
If we are considering her size than Pink Diamond is most likely overcooked like Amethyst which could explain why she was able to stay shifted as Rose Quartz for so long. Speaking of this I have a theory that the reason that Pink?Rose had to give up her physical form to have Steven might have something to do with her holding her shapeshifting for so long because like Amethyst said in one episode holding a shape for an extended period of time can put strain on the gem something Peridot indirectly confirmed by referring to shapeshifting as a significant use of energy. Considering that Amethyst's ability to shift is due to her being an overcooked gem giving Pink a similar classification would explain a lot about how she can appear as Rose Quartz for so long.
I think, since Diamonds aren't "programmed" like normal gems, they don't come out already knowing everything, hence the treatment from the other diamonds. As you said, each diamond is their own standard. They have to create that standard by themselves.
I don't like to think she's defective, though, for the same reasons you brought up. And I don't think such a diamond would even be seen by other gems if they were truly defective. I think the other three would have destroyed her if that was the case. Like the other defective gems on Homeworld (that didn't escape).
what if the 'every gem must be perfect' rule came in place after pinks shattering.

Because amethyst couldn’t stay looking like jasper too long so it makes sense for PD to choose the form of a rose quartz (while hiding her diamond on her stomach) and not change back after being poofed.
The reason I think she could be smaller is because she is on the bottom when the diamonds are together like white is ontop blue and yellow the same and pink the bottom and we saw the shadow of white diamond being slightly bigger then blue and yellow

They usually show that yellow, blue and red make up the color white, so what if pink diamond IS off colored and white diamond is a fusion between those three and yes I do know that when they corrupted the gems, white, yellow and blue diamond were present while pink was not which is the reason I said what if

If she's defective, her size difference from the other diamonds is so dramatic, even more dramatic than white's from what we've seen, it is possible that the crewniverse did not intend to portray her as a "normal" diamond; in fact wanted to show how different she was.
The other explanation would be if White was meant to be large, Blue and Yellow medium sized, and Pink small, in equivalence to their measure of control and power.
I would accept either explanation though.

She’s neither defective or off color. If anything else she is unique. She is empathetic towards everyone and sees the beauty in things. But then again the color pink does represent love and compassion so she definitely displays those characteristics of the color pink. So yeah she’s great

I believe that pink was supposed to be red diamond and as strong as white but white didn’t want anyone as strong as her so while pink was being created she probably did something to her so she would come out smaller and defective.she probably did this to the other diamonds as well but on a smaller scale
