Adam Hanly people say this about EVERY SINGLE musician who's performed for over 10 years. Cmon if you grew up with him you'd see age, but you see pictures of him from years apart from every day
I'm studying to be a nurse. Sometimes when my brain starts to hurt during study sessions, I take a fifteen minute break and watch Jonny Greenwood play this. My favorite musician of all time playing one of my favorite pieces of all time. It's the perfect reset.
Most underrated guitarist of all time. The work he has done with Radiohead and others shows that it doesn't always need to be about 80's hair-metal solos to make a top-ten list. Jonny deserves his place as one of the greats.
It makes sense to me, Johnny Greenwood rarely plays the guitar the normal way, as you "should"/ like it's a guitar. That's what makes his stuff interesting. However, I wouldn't personally call him an "underrated guitarist". Firstly, he's kind of famous. Secondly, Greenwood is known and cherished for picking up interesting pieces from other (less known) musicians and turning them into pop music. That's his thing and what he does best. Inventing new music he does not. (Not putting any negative values into this.)
you don't think he invents new music?! It's possibly what he does best. He's a very original composer. My personal favorites of his are Piano For Children and Prospectors Arrive from There Will Be Blood.
Marz E He is definitely a talented and open minded composer, but I wouldn't say he is exploring new territories in music. It's hard to imagine Jonny Greenwood's music without the influences of Arvo Pärt or Steve Reich, for example.
Wow he's got so many layers going an playing along with still adding more. How the heck one could keep track of where they are in the piece. Amazing work of art.
What I love the most about Jonny is that he appears completely content to just stand there and play like a genius while Thom takes center stage & Jonny doesn’t try to compete for attention. A true artist and musician.
This is Jonny Greenwood playing Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint for Electric Guitar. It was performed for the first time by Pat Metheny. About Mike Oldfield and Robert Fripp, both were influenced by Steve Reich in different periods. In fact, Mike Oldfield was influenced before. Mike Oldfield made a cover of North Star of Philip Glass in 1979's Platinum album. Around 1978-1979 Fripp watched Reich's performing with Eno and Belew as audience. Manuel Göttscjhing was influenced by Steve Reich around 1973-1974, you can check Inventions For Electric Guitar album. All those people, from Progressive rock, Ambient, New Wave, at the end were influenced by Minimalism. So, the idea was in the air.
Jonny completely changed my perspective as a guitarist. Broadened my horizons and helped me become more fearless. I owe this man so much for extending my career in his indirect way. The most humble of genius's as well.
I saw Jonny perform this last autumn as part of a fundraiser for the earthquake-affected area in Central Italy close to his heart. I was overwhelmed and cried, partly because of it's beauty and partly because I never thought that I'd have had the chance to hear it in person being performed. What can I say?? 🙏💕🇮🇹
It was like dreamtime. What I love about this vid is that you can hear people coughing, although it's a festival where Johnny fucking Greenwood is playing. Priceless.
I made a mashup once - Pat Metheny all in left speaker, Greenwood all in the right speaker. Everything matches perfectly, no editing had to be done! Best version of Electric Counterpoints and an unlikely collaboration of two remarkable guitarists.))
It is no surprise to see Jonny showing his admiration for Steve Reich. The man is quite radical and virtually invented sampling and looping... something Jonny and the boys are rather fond of.
Jonny is a composer first and foremost, he repeated many times that guitars are just tools. He can play so many instruments and really shines creatively.. underrated artist
Yea the others are just chopped liver... /s please. Ed is what gives them their spacey feel, Thom's writing the songs and Phil and Colin are a powerhouse rhythm section.
May 28th 2024 1:17am Not sure if I traveled into another dimension in time. I'm not sure what I'm listening to. It is mesmerizing. He is playing on another level that is above anything you would hear on a FM station. I frequently tune into wprb 103.3 Princeton Thanks for posting this very interesting piece of work.
This isn't a loop, but rather a conventionally notated classical piece by Steve Reich for live player and a pre-recorded track. It is played exactly note for note as it was originally written in 1987.
It would be really cool to see this with a whole orchestra of different guitar players with different guitars with different guitars and amps settings so you get a huge smattering of tones and tambres
Deathshuck That's great. Big fan of Tool's music. They did something radically different in metal music in my opinion, a genre which always gets flagged for being unnecessarily heavy and repetitive. Adam's playing is very different from the typical thrash metal lead guitarists and stuff like that.
Jonny's aged like 5 years since the 93 mtv 'creep' performance
not even 5 xD
Adam Hanly people say this about EVERY SINGLE musician who's performed for over 10 years. Cmon if you grew up with him you'd see age, but you see pictures of him from years apart from every day
Adam Hanly oh my god right??
They definitely don't say that about Thom..
Christian Castellanos no way.... case in point being Thom.
"i dont trust anybody here" - Johnny Greenwood
Also him at Oscar
oh man that makes me laugh so much. thanks!
😂😂😂
Jonny not on Telecaster makes me feel weird
nesfan8 I believe that’s Johnny Marr’s guitar that he just gifted him.
D Escalade really?? I’ve seen him play the Les paul with another group and I feel like it was a while back
He plays a Starcaster on some tunes :)
@@the_musiccellar pyramid song with a bow
wait til you see jonny on a les paul and thom on mustang/starfire bass with the smile!
he's an alien from a planet where they communicate with guitar harmonies as their main language
One of the most underrated comments on RUclips
We can do that on earth now too. 😉
!
Its so mesmerizing to see him play like mindlessly
So cool man
i bet Jonny's dream is to duplicate himself and made a band with himself playing all the instruments.
I've dreamed about that a couple of times myself. Problem is that i can only play the kazoo and a bit of triangle.
Kurorin Haha..the funniest part is he can actually play all the instruments necessary to make a great band and even more.
he must of been so excited when ableton live was invented and he could do just that, but using a laptop
Def Operator maybe that's why he programed a "shitty Live copy" in Max for TKOL
Kurorin What if he already did?..

Big respect to you for the career you are going into. Glad to know you appreciate this piece like I do!
That's beautiful
I've never heard this before
I played it right after John Cale and I'm blown away
Have you listened to John Cale

how come he kinda hate playing guitar but play it extremely good?

It took Jonny 30 extra years to transition from teenager to adult.
Yes he's 25 now lmao
What I love the most about Jonny is that he appears completely content to just stand there and play like a genius while Thom takes center stage & Jonny doesn’t try to compete for attention. A true artist and musician.
Absolute genius and super shy and humble. Sorry to have discovered Radiohead's music and its members only 9 years ago. Better late than never!
last night i had trouble sleeping, so i started listening to random Radiohead music on youtube in bed. I fell asleep but woke up to this...
I love how the youtube video 'stabilization' adds to the overall psychedelia of this video :w
look at those cuuurrrtaaaaiinnnsss
Initially I regretted allowing RUclips to stabalise. But I think you are right. It suits the song.
I swear, Jonny never ages.

Wow this changes things a lot knowing that this isn’t something Jonny composed, but something he had to teach himself with sheet music
Thank you for more context!
Jonny completely changed my perspective as a guitarist. Broadened my horizons and helped me become more fearless. I owe this man so much for extending my career in his indirect way. The most humble of genius's as well.
hey, i can see jonny's face

and he's so good looking
@@valleyofthedolls he is one handsome boy
weird innit
Fascinating to look into Jonny's eyes while he's playing...
It’s not about your guitar skills john, it’s about your beautiful ideas.
This is Steve Reich's composition.
👍😁
Try it sometime

Pure sex juice.

Pablo Rodríguez Haha! I see what you did there. (Love KC btw)
That'd be perfection
It is no surprise to see Jonny showing his admiration for Steve Reich. The man is quite radical and virtually invented sampling and looping... something Jonny and the boys are rather fond of.
As much as I like Steve Reich, didn't Bach invent sampling and looping? That's a fugue.
Andrew Was...that sarcasm?
Steve Reich didn't invent sampling what the hell
Beautiful chords
He is so beautiful, and his hair OMG!!!!!! ♥️😲🐰😲🐾🐾
Jonny beautifully executes THE perfect, double hair flip at 9 min. and 55 sec. into this video! ;D Love it!!!

Ugh he's just... Uh. Such an awesome human being.
The true heart and soul of Radiohead is Johnny Greenwood.
Mmm But can he write a song?;) While I agree he is amazing and beautiful I don't think he could he ever write a song like Exit music...

so Jonny IS the London Contemporary Orchestra?
Yes. There is no need for an etire orchestra when you have Jonny fucking Greenwood
+Stitch Grimly I guess it's a joke and you actually hear the other musicians...
Wow! The level on which he is communicating here I dont think I've ever seen before.
Thank you Fred!
What conditioner does he use? I could use a Jonny G recommendation.
Why does his hair move in slow motion while everything else is in real-time?
Funny. It may have to do with the manupulation of the image for stabilisation, first by the cam and second by RUclips.
His hair can manipulate the very fabric of time
Just an unreal expansion upon a magnificent work. utterly supurb.
A genius piece to choose, with exquisite timing and skill in orchestration, I might add.
This man Isolde a fine wine- only getting better with age.❤️
