  • Electric Counterpoint by Steve Reich
    Performed by Mats Bergström
    Electric Counterpoint (1987) was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival for guitarist Pat Metheny. It was composed during the summer of 1987. The duration is about 15 minutes. It is the third in a series of pieces all dealing with a soloist playing against a pre-recorded tape of themselves. In Electric Counterpoint the soloist pre-records as many as 10 guitars and 2 electric bass parts and then plays the final 11th guitar part live against the tape.
    Electric Counterpoint is in three movements; fast, slow, fast, played one after the other without pause.
    1. Fast - 00:14
    2. Slow - 07:01
    3. Fast - 10:23
    This performance with Mats Bergström was performed and recorded as part of London Sinfonietta's Steve Reich's Clapping Music App project.

    I saw Mats Bergström playing this live in Birmingham (UK) from the front row, so he was almost standing over me. I've never seen someone so totally rocking out. At the end I went to the stage door to see if I could get Steve Reich's autograph and Mats came out, but nobody seemed interested. I walked up and handed him my programme and pen and said, "You've made my night". He signed it, handed it back, and replied, "You've just made mine". Utterly spellbinding performance.

    I heard Mats play this in a small church in the middle of a wood in Sweden many years ago now, 50 people there I guess. It was advertised as a classical guitar concert, which it was, but after the interval he played this piece. Hard to describe such beauty and how I learnt about Steve Reich - I was already a pat metheny fan so you can imagine this was a special moment for me and the Steve Reich journey I found.

    I had an Akai open reel tape recorder back in the 1980's that was also a two track and you could adjust the controls in such a way that you would get a slapback effect like he started out with. I swear, I recorderd hour upon hour of stuff like this and it was all just improvised. Not a lick of it exists today because I never figured anyone would listen to it except only a few close musician friends.

    Be interesting to take this on with today's looper technology. Counterpoint in the Lydian mode with a stereo looper would be really interesting....might give this a try next time the girls are out for the afternoon. But really if you want to experience counterpoint at its finest listen to JS Bach Prelude 996 it doesn't get better than that.

    • @MM-vs2et
      @MM-vs2et 4 года назад +3

      @@gabrielbennett9053 I wouldn't call this type of music rock. This is avant-garde orchestral music. Just because it has a guitar in it, doesn't mean it's rock. I know rock is such a broad term these days, but I think, though the line is blurry, I can safely say this is not rock. At least in my opinion.

    • @gabrielbennett9053
      @gabrielbennett9053 4 года назад +1

      @@MM-vs2et No, no, I said post-rock. Post-rock is a rather broad experimental subgenre of rock. It's basic definition is "music that uses rock instrumentation for non rock purposes." A good example is the album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor, I'd highly recommend it if you liked this.
      However, in terms of classical music, I wouldn't say this delves into full avant-garde territory, despite being experimental. This definitely fits into Steve Reich's usual genre of minimalism.

    • @MM-vs2et
      @MM-vs2et 4 года назад +1

      @@gabrielbennett9053 a buddy of mine is obsessed with Godspeed You Black Emperor, but I haven't checked any of their music. If it's anything like Steve Reich, then consider me a fan. But in terms of rock instrumentation, does Electric Counterpoint count? Yes, clearly it's the guitar, but if we apply that reasoning, then wouldn't every song/music that's written with guitar is post-rock?

      It's a very full sound here. Metheny's sound focuses on the attack of the notes, and here we've got a very warm, resonant texture, focusing on the ambience. I very much prefer this recording.

      With the difference that Metheny played it perfectly whatsoever.

      i really don’t agree. besides the fact that this isn’t mastered nearly as well (lead is way too loud in first movement especially) and isn’t played or recorded nearly as clean, in my opinion the tone on II sounds like a software instrument (sorry)
