My brothers, your spiritual arrogance - even if unintentional - is simply breathtaking; as we observe two "fallen" [though redeemed] finite, pea-brained, specially-created human beings speaking - in almost gnostic terms at that - FOR the infinitely omniscient, immutable, and wholly inscrutable Ruach Elohim! Additionally, and going by your words: you both seem to be afflicted with what's been called the "Elijah Syndrome"? (See 1 Kings 19:13-18)
And yet you both engage in this unashamedly, while confidently assuring one-and-all, that your sole driving hermeneutic of wooden-literal "Cessationism," is binding upon every individual that's ever lived, in every conceivable geographical/cultural context throughout planet earth, for say, the last 2,000 years, or so.
Why in the world would the Holy "Spirit of Truth" himself speak to either of you brothers, when you're driven by raw spiritual unbelief to begin with? Yet contra your assumptions of unbelief, countless people [myself included] have been wonderfully supported, thus aided and directed by the "voice" of Almighty God, when in desperate "need" of such, when encountering, or confronted by a variety of highly challenging situations in our collective lives.
It simply boggles my mind to think that you brothers must, of cessationist necessity, believe [by faith alone] that the personal, omnipresent/omniscient Holy Spirit - "IN whom" his children throughout this planet share in that magnificent, though spiritually mysterious "union" as a daily reality, 24/7 - 365 no less, namely "we in him," and "them in us," [e.g., John 14:23; 17:20-21; Eph. 5:29-32; Col. 3:3-4] - had somehow willfully and/or immediately become MUTE, after the so-called "closing of the Canon," almost two-millenia ago??
How can either of you sincere, yet sincerely wrong brothers "in Christ," honestly maintain that your spiritually suffocating "one-size-fits-all" view of one's "personal" walk with their Lord and Savior - throughout Church history at that - would nonetheless be binding upon all people, in all places, and at all times?
Moreover, what kind of loving "earthly" parents, would purposely ignore the requests [or petitions] for communication, brought by their own children?? And please remember: that Luciferian-inspired, spiritual monstrosity called the Roman Catholic Church, had basically removed the "Word of God" from the people, for roughly 1,100 years, or so!
"Who is this who darkens counsel by [speaking] words without knowledge?" (Job 38:2ff)
I just wonder how the [personally] omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent Ruach Elohim, has been able to accomplish his redemptive purposes, ever since "Day Six" of the creation week; in spite of the fully-constraining "box" INTO which both of you well-meaning brothers et al. have tragically banished him?
After all: "Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as his counselor has taught Him?" (i.e., see Isaiah 40:13-14; see also Romans 11:33-36; Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8; 11:3; Acts 18:9-11; 2 Tim. 1:8-10; Titus 1:1-3; Rev. 13:8.)

@@davidhuston7559 David, just as you accuse us of having a “one size fits all” cessationist theology, you hold to a “one size fits all” charismatic theology. Both positions cannot logically be true. To say that we are putting God in a box is a tired, old,, fallacious argument. Our position is derived from exegesis and biblical theology. We believe the scriptures are sufficient. Charismatic do not. It is a fundamental difference.

Brother Justin: your curiously UN-omniscient reply, also fails to consider that you're not the Holy Spirit - of whom "alone knows the thoughts and intents of one's heart." You have absolutely NO idea as to how I view the content of inerrant Holy Scripture - and I carry an enormously "high view" of God's Holy revealed word - nor anyone else's view; let alone our brothers & sisters throughout the Body of Messiah Yeshua, on this planet.
Please stop doing the adversary's work [for them] amongst the brethren; much like our well-intentioned "YEC" brethren have been accomplishing, for far-too-long now! After all, Ephesiahs 4:1-7 actually means what it says.

I did have a vision just one time. My sister had cancer and it had spread to her lymph nodes. I saw the cancer being completely gone, as it it were kicked violently by God out of her body. I told her that it was "all gone," not knowing what that meant. She was encouraged. She did have treatment, and after the treatment was over, the doctor told my sister that the MRI showed something no doctor had ever seen before. Even if all cancer cells are dead, when it spreads to the lymph nodes, there are always going to be residual cells that can never be eliminated. The doctor then said that my sister's MRI showed NO residual cells. The doctor was shocked and my sister was happy.

I’ve been taught this for 25 yrs or so. Just left a church that focussed on this. The problem Is, people get obsessed with all this listening- and also with all the telling- ”God told me this or that”. They are ‘hearing’- I was hearing too- I long followed this teaching. But WHAT were we hearing? I think our own imaginations, our own thoughts. That’s all. Because New Agers, Mormans, Catholics, muslims, mystics- all have these teachings and practices. So do Buddhists. These promptings are part of being human- not exclusive words from God. And half the time these strong promptings are wrong- you call the person you felt ‘prompted’ to call- and they’re are totally fine! But if you called them and they’d just had an accident, for example- you’d go around telling people, “God told me”. Such is our proud natures.
The other problem with this teaching is that it insinuates people can get to God- without going through the cross. No need for repentance or bowing the knee to Jesus. Just sit silently and wait for God’s voice. This is Richard Rohr and all the progressives. I’ve been in a church that teaches this over and over week in and week out- and I can promise you- there’s no repentance or sin ever mentioned. No need for it- you can reach God through meditation and hearing his voice (they teach).

So well said Mary. Thanks for staying on the subject, so many posts here are going down rabbit trails that are unproductive and in some cases just an excuse to revile people who think differently from them. You are correct that this “hearing” is used by unchristian groups and is often made to fan our pride. You sound like you have the experience to know of what you speak, thanks for that.🙏

We had a dear couple of friends call us after years of not seeing them. It was really really good to hear from them. But we soon found out the reason for their call was they thought God had told them I had brain cancer. Nope. None. They kept asking and kept asking to the point that it got uncomfortable and weird. There would have been no reason for me to hide something like that from friends. I would have told them IF it were true. It simply wasn't true. That was about 14 years ago. I hope they are okay.

It leads to such a bondage trying to listen for a voice
It’s about a renewed changed heart not trying to listen for a voice
King Saul had direct words from God by the prophet and he sinned greatly so God Chose a man after HIS OWN HEART to be King (David)
I should know I used to be in bondage to that but Jesus set me free
He’s always leading me away from sin and into Truth and righteousness and love and trust
He will lead away from error
You can trust Him He loves you

We have to compare everything with scripture, don't we? If it doesn't line up with God's Word, it's wrong. In recent years, I have found that the only reading I really need to do is bible study. I like Kay Arthur's approach to the bible because she teaches women how to study any passage of scripture and understand it by examining what it really says. She starts with the formula we were taught in my high school English class - look for Who, What, Where, When, and Why. Then she shows how to use a couple of tools like looking up the meaning of an important original Hebrew or Greek word. I have been so surprised at what is in the bible when I've slowed down and really paid attention to what it says. So many of my biblical "knowledge" turned out to be incorrect when I really examined the well-known passages. I have found the bible to be a treasure trove of truth. (didn't mean to do alliteration there, lol) I'm glad you were able to discern false theology. God bless you!

@@simply_miki Nice job Miki! Way to be a berean. All these comments about hearing is interesting because every passage that is used by teachers teaching it is in the wrong context. Scripture never says to listen for God to speak to us, that sounds knostic. It’s definitely taught by the Mormons which should make us think twice about it. The Holy Spirit regenerates us, convicts us of sin, illuminates the word pointing us to Christ etc but I don’t see in scripture he talks to us. I think our sinful hearts can fool us and we have to be careful. God spoke to his prophets in the OT but the scripture says he speaks to us in these last days through his Son, in context that is in the incarnation and his teaching in scripture not literally and audibly. Joyce often quotes scripture and then restates it with one word changed, and people don't notice, and then they begin believing a lie. She also takes one verse of scripture and applies it to people or circumstances that have nothing to do with the original meaning and context. The main point of it all is to get people to believe that she has secret knowledge that they need. She rakes in millions and enjoys the adoration of crowds of people, while silencing and banning anyone who points out even a tiny discrepancy between her teaching and biblical truth. She is quite evil when making people go away. She has nothing to do with Jesus, other than using His name as a cover for her money- and power-making scheme. She follows the evil one, not Christ. She is dangerous to people's souls. She is very slick at attracting people and keeping them hooked on her false teaching. I'm glad you got away!

I had always believed that part of being a follower of Christ was to hear His voice or at least be prompted by His leading before every decision I have to make - or at least, every major decision. This scared me at a certain level because I was afraid of making a mistake and not hearing Him correctly. And I was always in awe of and a bit intimidated by the people at my Church who said that they heard the voice of God so clearly, not just about their own lives but about others', too. I felt that there was something wrong with me because I seemed to keep getting confused, and there have been many times when I recorded something in my journal which I thought was His personal revelation to me, but looking back at it it just simply.... did not happen.
So thank you so much Justin Peters, and to other faithful preachers and teachers of God's Word to God's people like you. I happened upon Pastor John MacArthur one time in RUclips, and it was as if scales fell from my eyes. And listening to Pastor John MacArthur, I was also to the Justin Peters Ministries here in RUclips.
You, Pastor John MacArthur, Pastor Phil Johnson, Pastor RC Sproul.... my heart is so overflowing with thankfulness to God for you, for your complete and absolute devotion to the faithful teaching of God's Word. Indeed you are working for the Lord, and not for men. Through your teaching, I have learned to stop wasting time on trying to "hear God's voice," and to instead focus my time and energy on the study and meditation of His actual Written Word in the Bible for the daily direction of my life. I have no other desire now but to grow in the knowledge of God through His Word, to walk in His ways, and to allow the Holy Spirit to transform me more and more into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ.
Much love and thanks from a sister-in-Christ in the Philippines! :)

As an ex-mormon this was incredibly refreshing! One of the hardest things for me about leaving the mormon church years ago was that the Christians around me talked about receiving spiritual promptings in the very same way as my mormon family, which left me very confused about how to know what was true. Only since becoming reformed and holding to sola scriptura do I now understand the glorious role of the Holy Spirit and the sure foundation of truth I have in God's objectively inspired word. I have felt uncomfortable with people who claim to hear the voice of God telling them to do things or telling me they felt God was giving them a message to share with me. It sounds New Age to me. I can’t find this as being scriptural. Thank you for your teachings.

    • @lukericker8325

It is 100% scriptural. What do you mean? There is an abundance of scripture, both New testament AND Old about being led by the Spirit, and walking in the Spirit. Which we are _supposed_ to do. When Paul was about to go to Rome OTHER PEOPLE were led in the Spirit to warn him that he would be bound.
It has absolutely nothing to do with “new age”, I’m not sure you even know what that is, but you just apply it to everything you don’t understand. 1 Corinthians 2:14.
Do you have discernment from God in your spirit? That’s God speaking to you. Do you have supernatural conviction of sin? That’s God speaking and directing. That’s what the Spirits job is as it says in John 16:8. Which is exactly what God was doing all the way back in Job 33.

Being led has nothing to do with this sort of prayer or meditation. YOU made this false association. God speaking through people has absolutely zero to do with “New Age” like your comment says. That’s absurd. New Age thinkers don’t even believe in a God who speaks, they think they ARE god. So you have no idea what you are talking about.
However, I would direct to the abundance of scripture which supports meditation and contemplation on God and his word, including being still. This has nothing to do with any New Age practice, and existed long before that was around.

In the early 90’s I was the associate pastor of an A/G church. The senior pastor resigned and I was asked by the church to serve as the new senior pastor. The church was in terrible shape and I didn’t want to stay on as senior pastor. However, before I took the new position I wanted to be absolutely sure that it was God’s will that I stay. For 3 days I prayed on my knees that if God wanted me to stay he would have to speak to my heart. I prayed and prayed for three days. On the third day I “heard,” so very clearly, God say to me: “Do you believe that I called you to pastor the church? [yes Lord] Rather than pray for peace to stay, stay until you have peace to go.” I was blown away! The “voice” was SO clear that I got off my knees and stayed on as the senior pastor. I believe that God does speak to us today.

Try the spirits and see whether they are of God. Discernment is key. One way to always know if it's the will of God is it will ALWAYS and ONLY glorify Jesus and Jesus alone.

It actually lifts a nagging burden to understand that there is not something wrong with me spiritually because I can honestly say I have never had God talk directly to me. I know that the Bible is the sure Word of God and that is how God speaks to His own. But sometimes I hear enough of this "God told me" stuff that I think I am missing something, that maybe I am too flawed and sinful for God to interact with. But I know God interacts with us through His written Word primarily and overwhelmingly so it is good to have that reinforced. I am pretty sure we have all eternity to hear directly from God anyhow.

    • @Pyroverbs205

Whether God speaks directly to people or not shouldn't really matter. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God will speak directly to those who are His.
God spoke directly to the prophets of old and the apostles/disciples, but it doesn't mean that there was "something wrong" with the rest of the people who believed but God never spoke to directly.
Whether God spoke to you (or another person) directly or not is not the barometer to determine God's favor/love for you. God interacts with us in different ways. Be of good cheer.

That nagging burden was probably God convicting you to have more faith. Instead you went the opposite way and became stiff towards him, like in Acts 7:51.
He interacts with us primarily through his Spirit, that’s what the bible teaches consistently. No where does it say he speaks or even teaches primarily through written word. The bible says that scripture is “God breathed and useful for teaching”. It actually says though that the Spirit is our primary teacher, the only one we need, AND he can bring remembrance of things God said. Scripture is vital, but it is not a replacement for the work of the Spirit. The Spirit didn’t stop arbitrarily after the bible was finally canonized in 200 ad, or in the 5th century. Or when the apostles died even earlier. He didn’t stop his work as soon as the last word of the last book was written on a piece of paper. Rather, the bible teaches, that in the last days (meaning from Jesus ascension to right now) the Spirit will be poured out ON ALL FLESH. That means not just on the apostles, or during their time, but all times for all people in the last days. The bible also says that if a father gives good gifts, how much more will God give the Holy Spirit to those who ask.

@@Pyroverbs205 It’s true that the way God speaks is not a measure of how much God loves you. That’s 100% true. Scripture in fact teaches that God speaks to different people in different ways. Read Job 33 for this. I'm sorry you got that impression from this video. I didn't hear Jim or Justin say that, so I'm not sure where you're getting that. Jim is saying that God has spoken in His written Word, so now we don't need Him to talk to us, audibly, outside the Bible. Prayer is you talking to God. You are invited to bring your cares and petitions to Him. He answers every prayer of those who belong to Him, but _how_ He answers those prayers is not _audibly_ but in time, in reality. For example, you want to pray for your friend's healing. Do that, and if your friend is healed, that's your answer. If he's not healed, that's God's will, too, and that's your answer.
There are great promises that will be realized in the future, that's for sure. The Christian is not guaranteed a nice, easy, healthy, wealthy life. In fact, we will suffer in this life. But we have received the Holy Spirit who will never leave us. We live in hope of the resurrection to come. In the meantime, we trust God as we read His Word and see how He is faithful, and that all things work together for good to those who love Him and are the called according to His purpose.

Sometimes I think that Cessationism is easier for skeptics and atheists to accept in many ways. But God has not changed and will not change with time and seasons.
While there is no teaching in the scriptures about how to hear the voice of God, it's clear that God still leads, speaks and guides today as the master communicator that He is. It is so critical to be led both by the Scriptures (inspired by the Holy Spirit) and the fellowship/communion of the Holy Spirit lest we make the Holy Spirit synonymous with the Holy Scriptures.

So when I ‘hear’ the voice of GOD, I will basically be hearing God’s Word / Scripture; that I have already read before ? I have not heard God speaking to me, except when I heard a statement in my mind….. saying “pull over, the ladder will fall of the truck in front of you”. I moved over without even thinking. The ladder flew off the truck, it would have hit my front windshield. Since then God is with me but He is silent. I believe in the cessation of Apostolic gifts. Also believe in Dispensationalism.
Mr Peters please let me know if I am understanding the Bible correctly. 🙏🙏🙏

I would like to ask someone about dreams because I don't know if I am diseaved I am new in faith and need to watch someone that can help me understand the bible better
I am praying and just trying to stay on God's word only and pray before I sleep so I don't dream anymore 😔

If it brought you to Christ then it was probably from God. These guys are talking about folk who expect stuff like that everyday but your situation is very different and God has used dreams before.
Love Christ because He first loved you and follow the scripture the best you can loving those around you. Don't get too worked up. These people are tackling a different problem. Sounds like God decided to show you grace and call you to Him in your weakest state. Praise God I'm so happy to hear your testimony! Scripture Scripture Scripture, keep reading it trying to hear God though it and fall deeper in love with our God and Savior Jesus Christ and find fellowship with other Christians so you can be loved on and you can love on others in the Church body.

Hmm, I just want to say, right here, right now. I don't follow the promptings of any of the Pastors you mentioned. However, I don't to do that, nor do I need to have the verses in the book of John, to believe what I believe. I have without a doubt had promptings by the Holy Spirit. Not to figure what church to attend or what doctrine to believe. It was in fact, that prompting that led me to Justin Peters Ministry. So, I guess, I should stop following your ministry. I mean from what I'm hearing here, there was no prompting by the Holy Spirit to follow your ministry. Too bad too! Because, I really enjoy listening to you and the biblical instructions you've provided. Wow! Now what do I do?!?! 🥺😯😕

I agree with you, except, do you really mean that you didn't need the book of John to believe what you believe? No, we believe the Bible because of the conviction, the "unction", of the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit won't guide anyone away from the Bible, and He would never provide some direct guidance _instead of_ the Bible, to anyone in rebellion against the Bible. It is His word, inspired by Him, and to reject His word is to reject Him, probably in favor of another spirit. It is the "sword of the Spirit", and notice that Paul described His use of it as like a surgical instrument: able to divide between the joints the marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. We cannot do without that, and the Holy Spirit will not guide us in rejecting His own word.
We can become so confused and offended by misinterpretations and misapplications of the Bible, and associate it with spiritual abuse, that we don't see how it can help, but that's exactly what Jesus said the Spirit would be sent to do: to guide us into all truth, as well as to be our Comforter, and to cause our hearts to say "Abba, Father", so the truth that He wants to guide us into is good for us, not destructive. The word and the Spirit go together. It is His instrument, inspired by Him and actively used by Him. Some of these people talk about Him as if, once He inspired the New Testament, He returned to heaven and sat down with Jesus and the Father. No, Jesus said He would be sent to 'be with" us "forever". Jesus said He would show us things, and that is through the apostles, but in our daily lives as Christians, He shows us things, too. The difficulty is in explaining the difference between the things charlatans deceive people that He shows them, and the things He really promised to do for us. It is really hard to put into words, and especially in a stressful encounter with people who have an agenda, Iike happens all day, everyday, online. That's why we need the Bible all the more. Look at it this way: the unction of the real Holy Spirit are authoritative in our lives; there is no way that they could not be. He's God. But what we say that the Holy Spirit showed us has no authority in someone else's life. Only when He has shown them something can it have any authority for them, because no one should believe that God has spoken, even inaudibly, just because someone said so. Without a true confirmation by the real Holy Spirit in your own heart, how would you know? And without confirming that it was the Holy Spirit through testing the spirits, we can deceive ourselves, and get into spiritual strongholds, etc. But the Bible's authority as the Holy Spirit inspired word of God speaks to all of us.. We test the spirits to see it they are of God through the Bible, and that which doesn't line up with it, is not of God. We'd need the Bible for testing the spirits, if we didn't need it for anything else.

I appreciate and am thankful for Bro. Justin’s ministry. Though I DO NOT believe God audibly speaks to anyone, nor in prophecy. I do believe God can lead us thru the Holy Spirit. In study and in preparing/preaching a sermon. I get a sense of an arrogant spirit from this author. There is a difference in boldness and cockiness.

I think you're raising an issue that Jim Osman has never argued for. Jim Osman has never argued that the Holy Spirit doesn't lead/guide us. The issue is those who assume that the Holy Spirit leading us means that He's going to speak directly to us about what job to take, or which person to marry, or where to go have lunch, etc. I'm sure that's not the view you hold to, and Jim Osman doesn't hold to that either. Jim Osman, Justin Peters, and every Bible believing Christian believes that the Holy Spirit guides us by His Word in every aspect of life, and that includes preparing a sermon.

Sometimes I may feel a nudge or an unexplainable urge to do something nice or giving like stopping to get someone a gift for no reason or to seek out a particular person at church or maybe the Holy Spirit will put someone in my heart to call overwhelmingly for no reason other than to leave a voicemail sending my peace and blessings. I dont believe we go through life with no inclinations or supernatural godlike Urges, but yes as far as "hearing God" goes im definitely convinced by Justin at this point that its complete nonsense. My favorite quote so far of his is the "...if you wanna hear God speak audibly, read it (the bible) out loud." I go to a charasmatic church and im hearing "God told me" all the time. I beening feeling so insecure praying so much saying "Lord let me just hear you or feel you or anything. Show me a sign" kind of prayers. I stand by them and I know they've been heard but I'm seeing now that I have to trust and believe without seeing like Im told to. Ive known for a few weeks that I dont fit with the charasmatic church and ive actively been trying to get people to stop listening to bethel and hillsong and teaching and talking directly or indirectly against the teachings of bill johnson and his pals.
