I think it wouldve been dope to see him in atleast one race/season of F1 like we did with Indy car and Fernando, never know what he couldve done!
I remember when Tony Stewart was encouraged to test for Formula 1 in the early 00's right after Jeff Gordon tested. It would have been a crazy opportunity to achieve what would have been the ultimate triple crown; A NASCAR Cup series, IndyCar and Formula 1 championship. Getting him or Gordon would have been the door-opening moment for the American market that Formula 1 wanted so badly back then.
Naoki Yamamoto has 69 license points in his hand. He won Super GT & Super Formula in 2020 and two P3s in Super GT in seasons 21' and 22'. Little did we know, he had F1 driver test back in Suzuka 2019 with Toro Rosso and his overall test performance has impressed by the Toro Rosso's engineers.
I wish more Japanese drivers came over to Europe. It must be difficult to be the only person flying the flag for the nation. It would take the pressure of the drivers and they could enjoy the racing more.
There were two indycar series when Dixon started, cart and irl. His first year was 2001, winning in his 3rd race in a small team on fuel strategy. He signed with ganassi when pac west folded early 2002, followed them to irl in 2003 and never left.
As for your questions about Dixon not sure I'm an 'expert' but I've been watching Indy full time since 2003, ironically his first season, and I will say Dixon is famous for his temperament. It's beyond even being safe, he will almost always choose not to battle even a bit, content to pick up lots of 3rd-8th place finishes, very safe. It's ofc highly effective, he rarely has incidents (on his own) and is a king of picking up points which always keeps him around, but for F1 not that you don't wanna be smart but need some more of an aggressive killer instinct. It could be there but to make a jump and try at 40+ nah fam lol As you say F1 or bust isn't the best mentality to have. Indy isn't nothing and he's one of the GOATs for that series. Id say the GOAT since caliber of driver always increases w time (nothing against the legends) so it was harder in his era.
It's interesting how playing those margins is such a polar opposite approach to so many. JPM, Verstappen, Senna. But then Hamilton, I'd say he's got more of this Dixon approach.
I heard Jimmy Broadbent describe F1's racing style as "move or I'll crash into you" a short while ago in a video, and I think that describes F1 racing pretty well, it's often about faking-out the other driver into giving space in order to avoid a collision.
Jake Dennis needs to be on this list next year, guaranteed. Great racer, it’s a shame he only has 16 points in the last 3 seasons, I think Formula E is underrated in the super licence system with Mitch not having enough points in the last 3 years, but I do think Dennis make up the remainder this season hopefully.
Formula E deserves the few SL points it gets. It’s almost like a demonstration series. The cars’ driving characteristics also don’t share that much with other top formula series. So, don’t think the experience would be very applicable to F1, IndyCar, Super Formula, etc.
@@TommoMcCluskey it honestly looks like the Jag powertrain has caught up the Porsche, its an interesting season a team that scored no points prior today locked out the front row.
@ryutenken1 I think the race proved that was probably a great deal down to the rain, but I am pretty confident Mitch Evans probably will be able to get enough super license points from this season, he's only the second driver to win 2 races this season after championship leader Wehrlein, Jaguar seem to be turning their season around significantly with consecutive wins and a 1 2, and Mitch Evans is already in a competitive championship position, now he just needs the consistency of Nick Cassidy, who has managed to get within 4 points of Wehrlein from 4 podiums and only one win in the last 5 races. I would love to see a Jaguar v Porsche dynamic in the championship this year, hopefully it can be possible!

Dixon's first year in Indycar style racing was 2001 for PacWest racing in CART during the split so don't skip those first two years, Indycar doesn't. I remember watching his first win at the Nazareth oval that year, caught everyone by surprise. I think he'd be pretty good at F1, but the time needed to fully figure out the series would hold him back.
When Dixon started in Indy Car it wasn't a spec series in the same way that say F2 or F3 is, there were different engines and different chassis, so having the right combination still could make a big difference. In 2003 for instance, there were two different chassis and three different engine manufacturers. Even now, they still have two different engine suppliers.
Yep. I think once you qualify you keep it.. the points don't roll of.. Schwartzman's issue is the same as Mazepin, even if he's now racing under the Israeli flag
The non-F1 driver I want to see in F1 without question is Alex Palou. And I think there's sufficient evidence that he wants it too. I mean, he already won Indicar, so he might try to win F1 too. And God knows that McLaren needs to have a back-up because Lando looks depressed this season.

You just forgot Arthur Leclerc already has 40 pf from FRECA and F3 regional Asia, and 2 pt from participating in F3. Also Forgotten Will Power, Josef Newgarden, Jack Doohan. Drivers won't lose the SL once they reached 40pt, they have to apply it and pay for it, they just need to run a minimum km in F1 testing.
I would love to see Brendon Heartley get a fair chance in F1 in a competitive car, instead of a car that can't even finish half a race, he's consistently one of the fastest drivers in the WEC
This is only semi-related but the video reminded me of back in 2002 when Toyota made their debut. They paired Mika Salo (who was a very well regarded driver, quite fast, and very experienced) with Allan McNish, who was coming from sports cars and in his early 30's. Although Salo outperformed him it wasn't by much. Especially later in the season. Toyota didn't renew McNish's contract which I think was silly. Anyways... the whole point of mentioning this is that drivers coming from other series can absolutely do alright in F1, especially if they are given more than one season to acclimatize.
Tommo, is cereal a soup or a salad? Is the milk a salad dressing or is it a cold soup broth? Soup isn't normally cold but it can be, and salad usually has vegetables but it doesn't have to. Or maybe milk is a condiment.
Robert has also been busy racing the new 296 GT3 car. Not many teams have adopted the 296 yet ans Ferrari are currently racing it with a team of factory drivers, Robert being one of them
Also, once you acquire a superlicense it can be renewed indefinitely... So someone like Robert Shwartzman can apply for his superlicense, if he hasn't already, and then renew continually for years without scoring any more superlicense points and get his first f1 drive when he's 30... And that will be totally acceptable by the FIA. You just have to continually renew it before it lapses and pay the application fee. Like, I remember reading a few years ago that Adrian Sutil still had a valid superlicense for some reason, even though he didn't drive anything at all for years.
Fun fact, Robert 100% has a super licence, because he's a reserve driver for Ferrari. All official reserve drivers have to have super licences, because they might be called to drive at any point, and that is an eligibility requirement to drive in a Grand Prix race. There's lower requirements to just drive in an fp1.
You could make an entire series going over IndyCar drivers and how good they are with the stats they hold and such. Could even do this with Formula E drivers too
Honourable mention to Dino Beganovic, 38 super points and only 19 years old! 1st in Formula Europe, 3rd in Formula 4 and 5th in Formula Middle East. He races Formula 3 this year and is above 40 points if he finishes top 5.
I'm now wondering "how many superlicense-eligible drivers are there in the world"? I'm vaguely aware that when drivers leave the sport, their licenses are valid for a certain time before they need to go through this criteria once more - meaning the pool of ex-F1 drivers who can return is also limited. Maybe there's a stat expert out there who can work this one out?
The thing with Dixon is even as a Kiwi he never really showed interest in F1. You can find a video on RUclips of him an early teen saying his goal was to go to America and race IndyCar. Of course on that timeline was the heart of the CART era where it legitimately was a threat to F1 and Nigel Mansell leaving F1 and Senna testing a Penske... and even tho he finished 3rd in points last year...it was arguably his most consistently GREAT season. 1 mistake amd a quirk of IndyCar points system cost him an easy title. He dominated the indy 500 and was going to win or at the very least finish top 5. But he made a mistake and sped coming into the last pit stop by 1 mph. he got a drive through penalty and that win/top5 turned into a 22nd and since indy 500 awards double points, a dominating 7th championship win turned into aclose 3rd place By time Scott did those Williams tests he hadnt even driven on a proper road course in a couple years as the IRL was an oval only series and he was supposedly right on Ralf Schumacher's times but Williams made their decision long before Scott sat in the car anyway. He's also noted that he didnt get alot of time in the car cuz the car had all sorts of mechanical issues during his test days. Also in a complete power move that no IndyCar driver has been able to use since...he used threatening to go to F1 as a means to get a raise in IndyCar lol
How Colton Herta was ever considered I have no idea. He's a social phenom. Everybody rants and raves about how great he is and the spotlight is never off him yet he constantly crashes himself by pushing his car too hard when he's half a track in front of everyone and all by himself lol. I would be shitting my pants anytime that guy is in front of me or behind me lol.
if shwartzman doesnt get an f1 seat (hope he does) i see him going to dtm or formula e and doing very well, and possibly joining f1 later like devries, i think evans does deserve an fp1 session
For simracers: if you have not tried GT500.. do it.. one of the most enjoyable classes in all of motor racing. Just enough power to make it scary, just enough downforce to make it go REALLY fast. Faster than you think. It is midpoint between open wheelers and GT cars. Just a word of warning: you may not like to drive anything else, if the mod is well made of course.
I got to watch Dixon live in St. Pete this year. He has that “it” factor, similar to Fernando. I think he would be quick in anything you put him in. He’s that good.
6:18 that same experiment was tried before with Sébastien Bourdais, after he won back-to-back Champ Car titles in the mid 2000's. It went badly tho....
I think generally Indycar is under-recognized and it is really unfortunate because it's an awesome series with some very good drivers. Atleast a handful of Indy drivers could honestly have a solid run in F1 if given the chance
Indy car is great, so many more competitive teams and cars and it’s just so diverse where they race when you also add the variety of ovals they race as well
This video got me some questions - "Could they be in F1?" (if there would be 21st car on grid that could be used for such 1-off appearances for like 3-5 races each, provided for last season last place team - with some 20M bonus ofcourse) and same time "Why they even would want F1?". For young, thirsty drivers it kind of makes sense but there isn't that much "racecraft" (if you know what I mean) that can be find in other series (tighter, sometimes bigger field) and also might have more "handling" characteristics (you gotta be pretty tight in F1... some likes it a bit more wild and wider.. I mean car handling).
Dixie is, as my army friends would say, a "PT God." The man is in shape. There is absolutely no doubt he could physically handle F1 - as Fernando Alonso does. But, he has absolutely no interest in it. He was supposed to test an F1 car, I forget the team, like 15years ago, but it didn't work out. He has since made it clear that his heart is with Indycar. (which of course, as an Indycar fan, I love.) The young Indycar driver I'd love to see jump over is Pato O'Ward. He's at 34points, but I'm afraid his chance was lost in the last decade.
SVG winning the last 3 supercars would give him 45 points, plus he does a bit of other racing so he could have more. He just signed a new contract with redbull so he probably isn't moving soon
Unfortunately for Edo mortara the Maserati team is pretty poor this year. He was an absolute beast last year when the car was using the Mercedes powertrain.
nice subject you choose, never gave this much thought till herta was mentioned. thnx, I know a lot about f1, but this I overlooked. offcourse I know how it works and that there are drivers not in f1 that have a superlicence, but never gave it much thought. thnx for giving me something to think about.
Just a FYI, Dixon really started in CART in 2001 and since Indycar reunification in 2008, stats from CART are back to being official Indycar stats now. Oh and yeah, I think he or Power (Also has the points at over 40) could preform in an F1 car today at their age. Both are legends. Power is the all time Pole leader of the sport, he can still put down fast laps. Dixon is just very consistent, he can hit numbers, save tires (Fuel ... lol oops F1), pull off whatever strategy the team throws at him to a T. It's why he is so frustrating, he could be nowhere all race then bam top 5 finish fighting for the win at the end every week for years.

Najiri and Yuki in a Honda would be epic...
Or chaotic
Inject it
I wish more Japanese drivers came over to Europe.
In response to you query though, f1 passed him by a long time ago, entering f1 as a rookie in your 40s would be a disaster whoever you are.
Of course, the CART days!
Man I would love to see Edo or Mitch in F1, the latter of which I think would be the more exciting prospect.
Mitch would do a job no question
Dennis is decent no doubt, could do a job if the opportunity presented
Hi what about Antonio Felix da costa
Formula E deserves the few SL points it gets. It’s almost like a demonstration series. The cars’ driving characteristics also don’t share that much with other top formula series. So, don’t think the experience would be very applicable to F1, IndyCar, Super Formula, etc.
Mitch actually might get the 40 with how this formula e season as well as edo could turn it around based on this weekend
He's doing pretty well so far aye
I honestly think António Félix da Costa deserved a place in a F1 car… he won Formula E in 2020, and almost had a ToroRosso spot long ago, they opted for a Torpedo
You could fill at least 3 teams with drivers who didn't get their chance in F1, or got it in the wrong car or at the wrong time. Di Grassi, JEV, Antonio, Bird, Wehrlein, Lotterer, Vandoorne...
@@EmyrDerfel If someone was to make some sort of "Formula One 2" you could fill another entire grid of 20+ drivers with those who didn't get a fair chance in their time. Teams included
@@juanin200 Red Bull could probably launch their own academy series. Sort of like Formula Renault, but more strictly an academy. Call it Mobil 1 Red Bull Racing Academy.
Would love to see Scott mclauchlan in f1, he did amazing in v8s and came 5th tied in indycar last year in his second season and has romain grosgeons backing
That sponsorship was soo smooth it had me singing smooth operator
Love the recognition of Indycar. It is def one of the most competitive series in terms of racing. However, Josef Newgarden is also super license eligible 2x champion & would prob be the most competitive/consistent out of the current Indycar crop.
Plus his & Scott McLaughlin's BusBros show is great.
Sorry don’t wanna be that guy, but just respect how a RUclipsr of this size actually checks his comments. Respect my dude. (Love f1 btw so I really enjoy your vids)
Scott Dixon debuted in 2001 in cart which is indycar as well
When Dixon started in Indy Car it wasn't a spec series in the same way that say F2 or F3 is, there were different engines and different chassis, so having the right combination still could make a big difference. In 2003 for instance, there were two different chassis and three different engine manufacturers. Even now, they still have two different engine suppliers.
Shwartzman actually had superlicense. He showed his superlicense on his social media back in 2020 that’s before he got P4 and P2 in F2 championship
Yep. I think once you qualify you keep it.. the points don't roll of..
Schwartzman's issue is the same as Mazepin, even if he's now racing under the Israeli flag
The Scott Dixon video idea is 🔥 🔥 the way he got into racing is a great story.
The non-F1 driver I want to see in F1 without question is Alex Palou. And I think there's sufficient evidence that he wants it too. I mean, he already won Indicar, so he might try to win F1 too. And God knows that McLaren needs to have a back-up because Lando looks depressed this season.
Palou would be my no.1 pick too
@@TommoMcCluskey Imagine an Alex Alex (Palou + Albon) team in F1
3:28 robert does still race, his in GTWC Europe Endurance
I hope Colton Herta can one day join F1, he's got a lot of talent and because he's so young, a lot of longevity
I hope him or Kirkwood might jump to F1 one day.
The raw pace is there, he just needs to get more consistent
@@mattiasgarbi9470 Kirkwood and Herta need to work on their consistency first. Especially Kirkwood. He's finally got that race win but he needs to keep his car out of the wall and other drivers.
If you're asking who I would be most interested in watching race, hands Down for me its Nojiri. Such an amazingly gifted driver. Obviously I have absolutely zero personal knowledge about him, but he would be an asset to any team as a professional driver.
That being said Evans seems like the best overall package to build a team with .
Tommo uploading getting me through my A-Levels
Good luck with your studies bud
Same lmfao
Scott Dixon being Fernando Alonso but in Indycar is so accurate lol
As an American it would be fun to see Scott get a shot. He’s just been such a treat to watch all these years
Loving your wider content lately like these videos, speaking about drivers outside of the current F1 grid
Cheers Gemma! I always want to tie it back to F1, but I just love motorsport so am more than happy to squeeze other series in when I can!
@@TommoMcCluskey it’s so different to anything else other F1 creators are doing right now. I obviously love your more current F1 focused content and your streams too! But this feels really fresh and exciting
Ive notice the shift in your ad inserts. I watched you YT$ video where you talked about changing your style and ive noticed…well done Tommo
Cheers Omar, I appreciate that!
Nojiri has 80 super license points? That's nuts.
I've been saying for years now, it will be very interesting to see F1 bring in some talented veteran IndyCar or Super Formula driver instead of the typical F2 junior
Great video Tommo a banger🔥 Great to see some Kiwi's coming up on the list as there are very few in the Formula categories at the moment I would love to see Scott or mitch make an appearance in fp1 but most likely not so Liam is my home country's best shot at the moment and he's looking pretty quick :)
SVG could have made the list too n'all. You Kiwis dont play
@@TommoMcCluskey it's a shame here the F1 season time schedule is not good otherwise I would be watching every race :( about 3/4 or more of the season is between 12am-3am
Tomoki and Naoki Yamamoto could be future F1 drivers in a few years time probably
Edo Mortara has been my favourite driver in FE since he made the most legendary double overtake I have ever seen a few years back.
You should have mentioned IndyNXT champion Linus Lundquist, who shockingly has enough superlicense points.
I should have!
7:40 that hand placement on the left is nuts lol
Didn't even clock that hahahahahah
Another notable driver from Japan is Ryo Hirakawa, drives Super Formula and WEC
I would love to see Brendon Heartley get a fair chance in F1 in a competitive car, instead of a car that can't even finish half a race, he's consistently one of the fastest drivers in the WEC
Can't believe I didn't know who Scott Dixon is! He sounds like an absolute legend!
Regarding Dixon, if Alonso can then why not. Age is just a number.
Especially these days, drivers know how to take care of themselves better than ever.
@@TommoMcCluskey So just imagine how much Max could win racing till 40. (Given the car he's in)
Tommo, is cereal a soup or a salad? Is the milk a salad dressing or is it a cold soup broth? Soup isn't normally cold but it can be, and salad usually has vegetables but it doesn't have to.
Or maybe milk is a condiment.
Cereal is sh*t, that's what it is.

You have also Alex Palou, the 2021 Indycar Champion and 2023 McLaren Test Driver
Robert has also been busy racing the new 296 GT3 car. Not many teams have adopted the 296 yet ans Ferrari are currently racing it with a team of factory drivers, Robert being one of them
I saw Steve pop up when mentioned Super GT
V8 Supercar driver Shane Van Gisbergen has finished 3rd in 2020 (10 points), first in 2021 & 2022 (15/15 points). So 40 points.
The biggest surprise is that Scott McLaughin can qualify for super license despite only being in 3rd season of single seaters
This is something him and Newgarden brought up alot on Bus Bros last year to.troll.Herta
You could make an entire series going over IndyCar drivers and how good they are with the stats they hold and such. Could even do this with Formula E drivers too
I honestly think Schwartzman should get a shot at F1 with maybe Alfa Romeo or Haas in 2024
I hope he doesn't go to Haas. Bully boy Steiner has proved he shouldn't be trusted with rookies.
What do the super license points look like for driving in F1?
Steve made a nice appearance in Tomkoi’s part
The real SuperGT
Scot Dixon is also a super nice guy. Complimented my good wood sweatshirt at Texas.
But he made a mistake and sped coming into the last pit stop by 1 mph. he got a drive through penalty and that win/top5 turned into a 22nd and since indy 500 awards double points, a dominating 7th championship win turned into aclose 3rd place
By time Scott did those Williams tests he hadnt even driven on a proper road course in a couple years as the IRL was an oval only series and he was supposedly right on Ralf Schumacher's times but Williams made their decision long before Scott sat in the car anyway. He's also noted that he didnt get alot of time in the car cuz the car had all sorts of mechanical issues during his test days.
Also in a complete power move that no IndyCar driver has been able to use since...he used threatening to go to F1 as a means to get a raise in IndyCar lol
honestly tomoki nojiri is a legend
8:53 I see what you did there with Super GT 😏 Steve would be proud
Basically, what Tommo says in the intro happens in Iron Man 2 when Tony Stark decides he can race at Monte Carlo!
Tony Stark and Jean Todt were besties
the super gt poking up „hello viewers“ had me dying hahahaha
The other option is that if you are a Preferred Species, THAT is all that matters!
Didn’t schwartzman earn some points for competing in fp1 practice last year
Yes he would have, good point! So he's got even more points than I mentioned here.
I think Scott Dixon could do it. But I don't think any of the seats offered to him would be worthy of his posterior.
if shwartzman doesnt get an f1 seat (hope he does) i see him going to dtm or formula e and doing very well, and possibly joining f1 later like devries, i think evans does deserve an fp1 session
A Sudden Sunday banger is always a win
That's what she said... when served a lovely Sunday roast.
If things that happened last year, with McLaren and Ganassi, I would have scene Dixson doing a free practice session in the US races. But, uh yeah...
Indy car is great, so many more competitive teams and cars and it’s just so diverse where they race when you also add the variety of ovals they race as well
Jamie Chadwick has 30 points for 2021 and 2022. In 2020 unfortunatelly W-Series was cancelled. Technically she could get missing 10 points from FP's
Would love to see Mitch in a F1 Seat! He’s amazing in Formula E, does have an always bridesmaid never a bride situation!
Loved the supergt cameo
Dixie is, as my army friends would say, a "PT God." The man is in shape. There is absolutely no doubt he could physically handle F1 - as Fernando Alonso does. But, he has absolutely no interest in it. He was supposed to test an F1 car, I forget the team, like 15years ago, but it didn't work out. He has since made it clear that his heart is with Indycar. (which of course, as an Indycar fan, I love.)
The young Indycar driver I'd love to see jump over is Pato O'Ward. He's at 34points, but I'm afraid his chance was lost in the last decade.
Scott Dixon is no doubt in the top 10 best Racing Drivers in any series (right now)
SVG winning the last 3 supercars would give him 45 points, plus he does a bit of other racing so he could have more. He just signed a new contract with redbull so he probably isn't moving soon
i'm pretty sure chase elliott is closer to a super license than colton herta and that is very funny to think about
Unfortunately for Edo mortara the Maserati team is pretty poor this year.
Colton Herta deserved that drive more than Nych De Vries
Tommo saving the spring break
💪
The hello viewers was too funny 😂
Give Steve his royalties SuperGT!
Missed Scott McLaughlin, Supercars champ, Indycar racer
Does Newgarden also Qualify? Just curious
Get rid of the Super license. I’ve only been a fan since like 2020, so I have no attachment to the sports tradition. I would love to see the chaos a driver going 5-15 seconds slower a lap would cause.
