      Instant meme there 😅👉
      I like this version for one reason, wich is since Yoda is the greatest Jedi alive in that era, it would make sence that not even the great sith lord could defeat him, reminding that even the most skiled dark side user can not beat the strenght that comes with the light side, and that if it weren't for Palpatine having control of everything in the galaxy, he wouldn't have won. Wich brings back how tragic the whole situation is (the Jedi could have beeten Palpatine, but the roots of the dark side were spread to long).

      True. I feel yoda is one of most powerful beings ever due to his many years of knowledge and training. I feel like this ending could have happened with yoda overpowering palpatine but I do understand why yoda did say he lost just from his perspective the only real win from this fight was yoda killing palpatine. Just imagine yoda harnessing some of the dark side or even turning to thr dark side he would be immensely powerful but i definitely would like to see yoda in his younger days.

    I've noticed something interesting. As Yoda is backing up Palapatine towards the central rising platform, you see Yoda's shadow is projected on the floor and slowly moves to the platform where you see his shadow increase gradually to a massive size, to the point it's much larger than either of their mortal bodies. Yoda's power transcends his body, this also gives a sense of how Palpatine felt, he's obviously nervous about taking on such a powerful master. Behind the scene's stuff like this really lets you into the mind of George Lucas.

    I actually think that both Yoda and Obi-Wan winning their battles, yet still losing overall has a greater impact. It kind of shows not only how much of a mastermind Palpatine is that he basically couldn't lose, but also puts emphasis on who the jedi are supposed to be. It was never about winning the battles, but about something greater.
    It kind of goes full circle when Luke is defeated by Sidious, but still wins by choosing to stand for something greater and redeeming Vader.

      @Sheev Palpatine Them being arrogant (which they were), is not a bad point, but especially considering what the jedi are supposed to stand for makes for a shallow point in my opinion. Especially when you consider that Windu did beat Sidious fair and square according to Lucas and it wasn't his arrogance that defeated him then, but rather his very non-jedi attitude of wanting to execute a disarmed Palpatine straight away.
      The same can be said of the clone wars itself and the jedi order. Jedi aren't supposed to want power either, so trying to be objective about it and preparing better for it, wouldn't really be the jedi way either. As soon as the jedi wanted to win the war and beat Sidious they were always doomed, no matter how they tried to do it. That's what I think is the better lesson.

    There was obviously a big power shift between Palpatine and Yoda in this one vs the actual film... They had a standoff and Yoda admitted that he couldn't defeat him... I wouldn't even say that Palpatine necessarily won... But he stayed and Yoda left whereas Yoda stayed and Palpatine left in this version so it's all a matter of perspective I suppose. Yoda's spirit had been broken so I always imagined that affected him a little too as he was conflicted internally.
    Also, maybe they didn't want to overshadow the biggest duel happening on Mustafar between Anakin and Obi-Wan, even though I feel it wouldn't have affected it much at all because their duel focuses more on their immense skills with a blade while this duel focused more on the mastery via the force. It would be cool to see an extended cut with some of this laced back in the film!

    • @theasphole

      Direct power levels are only part of the story. The will of the force was at work here and this was destiny set in motion many generations before. Even if yoda was more powerful, the entire momentum of the darkside and the true will of the force was behind Palpatine.

    Although I agree with that defeated Yoda made a greater impact on the creation of Empire than the escaping Palpatine could, there is also one crucial detail which I think is absolutely cool and it is shame they didn't use it. Those TV-bots there. That was an amazing detail. We saw that Palpatine claimed he was attacked by the Jedis. But this, this would add some more evidence to Palpatin's cause. A footage of him being attacked by the grandmaster himself. Propper cut of this footage (to hide lightnings and red blade) and he would have evidence to convince most people that Jedis really used deadly force against the democratically elected chancellor and thus Jedis attacked the foundations of the Republic.
    The initial speech in the senate, that was just words. I can imagine that many people of the galaxy would be confused by the speech. Jedis did what? But this footage with Yoda that would be the final strike to the public image of the Jedi Order. That would minimise any doubts about it. It would confirm his claims about the jedi treason, it would strengthen his position, it would justify the jedi purge in the eyes of the majority of the galaxy.
    That was the thing that puzzled me in that movie. How Palpatine managed to convince the galaxy so easily that Jedi Order betrayed them all with just his speech. Those TV-bots during the fight with Yoda, that is the answer.

    So this is actually a previs edit. Usually in previsualization there is a shitton of ideas being thrown around, just like this, and often times most of it never makes it into the final movie.
    Nowadays most big budged action movies use previs, especially Marvel, and oh I wish we were able to release all those different previs edits to the public, it's amazing to see how certain scenes originally could've looked completely different to what people see in the cinema.
    The whole previs thing pretty much started with George Lucas and EP3, but I thought it was only for the Mustafar fight bit, I had no idea they actually did it for other sequences as well!
    But yeah, working in previs made me realize how much really cool stuff gets thrown out for many different reasons (Sometimes very good reasons :D) and also how much of the really cool stuff doesn't come from the director but many individual artists that no one will ever hear about.
    There are some directors/producers/etc that have barely any vision and you'll just have to keep outputting different ideas until they finally find something they like

  • @SaberEBW
    @SaberEBW 3 года назад +44

    I feel like this is a truer yoda. When we are initially introduced to him and who he is in the originals is very different than how he was in the prequels.
    This shows how much more powerful Yoda truely was with the force, and that he would have won. He only admits defeat to the point that he couldnt defeat Sidious, the same can be said for this fight. Sidious was able to escape and he wasnt able to beat him in time.
    Sidious has always came off as the shadow puppeteer and corruptor. Not the all mighty god of the sith, as a pose to Yoda who is and always was said to be extremely powerful, but he is humble and the pinnacle of the jedi.

    • @theserpent8667
      @theserpent8667 3 года назад +2

      This. Besides, what better way to showcase his mastery of the force than showing him almost beating the manipulator in a straight fight, but realising by the time that Luke arrives that he's easier to beat when his overconfidence is at its highest.

    • @darth3261
      @darth3261 3 года назад

      Darth Sidious was the almighty god of the Sith though.
      Yoda was more powerful when they met because of their age difference and experience. Palpatine was around 80 years old and Yoda nearly 900, and yet the Emperor still hold his own against the most powerful Jedi of all time.

    • @SaberEBW
      @SaberEBW 3 года назад +1

      @@darth3261 thats my point. Sidious wasnt built up to be the moat powerful Sith. He was just the first Sith Lord to appear and attack the jedi in a 1000 years. Yoda on the other hand is directly refered to power throughout the movies. He is boasted as the strongest Jedi and the Jedi who taught the strongest Jedi of pas generations.
      Yes i get your point that Palpatine was impressive, but he also was made super powerful for no reason. He is a corruptor, a rogue who fights in the shadow, never revealing his true twisted nature. Not the most powerful evil the galaxy has ever seen.

    That shot of the ruined senate chamber is so emotional. Like all this damage and destruction and for what? Really sets it up nicely, how the whole world fell and suffered from the greed and fear of a few. And you could say Yoda then fled so as not to hurt more people in the friendly fire, though I don't guess that would have the same impact, plus probably would have rang false as so many people were put under the boot of the Empire that probably could have been saved if Yoda had stayed to fight.

      I don’t think he lost but this ending is more sensible in all aspects for Star Wars. It would have empathised this bit so much more as yoda only had winning in his mind as killing palpatine that is why he said he lost even though yoda just fell which made it pretty impossible as palpatine was backing up at that point.

    When I was younger, I always thought that Yoda would win but would do so in such a way that he would have to flee and go into hiding regardless. Thisbis pretty much what I imagined. That Yoda would defeat the Emperor but Palpatine would avoid being killed and escape. By that point, the Clones would arrive and Yoda would be forced to bail as Palpatine had survived and either escaped and/or made his way to the safety of the Clone lines and went back to playing the part of Supreme Chancellor. This in turn would leave Yoda to either try and fight all the Clones and get to Palpatine, or be killed in the attempt. Basically he'd lost his one window for victory and needed to flee - winning the battle but losing the war so to speak.
    .
    That would leave us with a situation where even though Yoda may have technically been the victor in the direct battle, Palpatine had won overall, returning to safety where Yoda could not get to him and being forced to retreat. Over time, Yoda would continue to age and get slowly weaker, meanwhile, the Empire would thrive and grow, its grip on the galaxy ever tightening. As such, the Emperor would become even more inaccessible while he was free to devote all his time and effort to studying the dark side and became stronger. To the point where Yoda's failing age, the Emperor's ever growing power and Palpatine's basically unreachable/untouchable position in the Empire would prevent Yoda from ever trying to assassinate or directly fight Palpatine again. Instead, he chooses to stay in exile and prepare to train the next generation of Jedi, passing on the knowledge, wisdom and teaching of the one being in the galaxy capable of actually defeating the Emperor.
    .
    This would add, in my opinion, more weight/gravity to Yoda's position as a Jedi Master and "the one who defeated the Emperor". It would make the fall of the Jedi and the Senate and it's transition into the Empire all the more tragic as it was that much closer to being prevented. It also makes Palpatine' s plan seem even more brilliant as even when he is defeated directly, he still won overall. And it also adds a plot point that a young, naive Luke can latch onto and maybe even get a bit confused/angry about - I.e. why is Yoda hiding all the way out in Degobah when he is the one being that can an has defeated the Emperor before - only to find out just how truly a monumentous task it was to even reach the Emperor. It could also add some foreshadowing to Yoda's eventual death (Which in my opinion was actually pretty lacking) with a clear indication being Yoda telling Luke that he is too old now and no longer possesses the strength to fight and defeat the Emperor as he once did, all the while indicating that the Emperor had only gotten stronger while Yoda himself had weakened. This would drive home how Luke really was the last hope of the galaxy and also really set the stage for the new generation becoming both the next stage of the Jedi and the foundation from which a peaceful galaxy would emerge.
    .
    Finally, it would add more weight to Yoda's failure, depending on how you look at it. He was even closer to saving the galaxy in this version and actually seemed to defeat the Emperor, only for that victory to be stolen away at the last minute by bad timing and bad luck. Yoda had "won" but at the same time had somehow lost far worse. He'd missed his one window of opportunity and proven unable to truly end the threat of the Emperor. While this did happen in canon also, the idea that Yoda still suffered and overall loss (one that the galaxy would pay dearly for) that mimicked the overall loss he had in canon DESPITE technically defeating the Emperor in combat, would make the failure all the closer to a victory but then, as such, all the more tragic.
    .
    It would also point out just how screwed the Jedi were even from the start. That once caught in Sidious' web, they were doomed from that moment on. So much so that even facing and defeating Sidious himself could not save them. Remember that the Jedi are most commonly ascribed their losing position due to the fact that they focussed on preparing for a repeat of the Jedi-Sith war. They approached the threat of Sith resurgence the same way as they did ages ago and it left them completely unprepared for the modern Sith who had changed, adapted and evolved to become something completely new, different and in the end, deadly. The idea that the Jedi would continue to fight using "outdated" tactics against an enemy that had evolved far past such attempts, was quite telling for the Jedi. This was exhibited in every one of the duels that takes place. Maul first shows up as an assassin and is met with Jedi force, being defeated (and his appearances in the Clone Wars only seem to strengthen Jedi belief that the Sith are returning as they did in days gone by).
    .
    Then Dooku appears and despite his penchant for diplomacy and aggressive politics, still ended up confronting the Jedi and the Republic directly, bringing war to them through the Separatist armies. He too is eventually met with the Jedi directly and he too is eventually overcome. Not once in this time was Palpatine even suspected as being the true Dark Lord because the Jedi were too taken with the more obvious and immediate threats right in front of them and were meeting with success well enough by employing direct, old war tactics to consider anything else. Believing the dark side was behind the Clone Wars in some capacity, the Jedi geared up for another galactic battle with the Sith that would never come. Of course, when it was revealed that Sidious was the Dark Lord, it was far too late for the Jedi to deal effectively. Hell, half the reason they were unable to deal was because their wartime tactics resulted in them spread all over the Galaxy.
    .
    Even once Mace was informed directly that Sidious was the Chancellor, his knee-jerk reaction was to fight directly, just as the Jedi always had. Moreover, for this to culminate in the last days of the Jedi Order, where Grand Master Yoda would end up fighting the Dark Lord of the Sith directly, just as if they were at war and then still losing said war DESPITE actually defeating Sidious in open combat, would be the perfect cherry on top of showing just how woefully unprepared mishuided the Jedi were and just how costly it was for them (and the galaxy at large) to have remained with their minds in the past, spending generations preparing for a war that would never happen - at least, not in the way they expected.
    .
    Basically, this version would drive home a few of the existing key plot points, add yet another layer of tragedy to the fall of the Jedi and the Republic, make the Sith victory that much more bitter for the good guys, make out Palpatine to be even MORE brilliant that he is already, cement just how truly outdated the Jedi ways were (giving the next generation - and what's left of the old - a completely new view and being more open yo change), point out more clearly that the Jedi were their own worst enemy and indicating the dangers of arrogance, overconfidence and complacency, set Yoda up as even MORE of a grand and legendary figure and leave a few interesting points lore-wise for Luke to explore as he grows and matures that would also show us how the galaxy has generally developed in the time between Revenge of the Sith and Yoda's appearance. Finally, I think it would add more gravity to Yoda both as a character and just how impactful/meaningful his death truly was.

    While I prefer what we got in the film, I also always had a problem with how Yoda admits defeat. Sure, he slips and falls a long distance but he appears to be mostly uninjured. There are no clone troopers present to force him to flee. He just seems to give up at that point.
    The novelization (which I haven't read) may explain how Yoda was extremely tired, but the movie doesn't seem to show this very well.

    I thought in the novelization of ROTS, which I really liked, was Yoda thinking he HAD the edge, but he saw how the Sith evolved where the Jedi Order became stale, lost…. So Yoda made the decision to escape and train the next generation of Jedi Knights and go for the wise, long term play, like the Sith when they went underground than push his advantage and risk it all. I think Lucas wanted to push, “Good always overcomes evil, but if it isn’t wise it gives evil a longer and longer reign before it is overcome.” Matthew Stover’s ROTS novelization seemed to stress that to me at any rate. The whole book how patients and powerful and creeping the dark is - but even a little candle flame can keep it at bay. …and how love can light stars.

    The ROTS scene we got is what we needed, Yoda needed to fail otherwise it would have been weird that he stayed in exile for so long. The second the camera drones got involved and started broadcasting, even locally, the scene had to be deleted. This was really cool but it’s definitely good that it went the way it went. It adds more to yoda’s (the Jedi’s as a whole) downfall. He lost the war, obviously. But he lost the battle. That had to have hit his ego in some way, right? That’s the reason behind their downfall anyway. They were so arrogant in their power. Yoda, himself, was arrogant. He thought he could beat sidings but he didn’t, technically. He had to flee. Very damaging. The movie was beautifully done, but still. This was really cool and I love seeing alternate versions. Theories are amazing!

    There are alot of elements to the previs that are better overall imho. The way the drones came down had a huge impact. With tbis duel, palps could have very well turned the entire galaxy against the jedi with evidence instead of just saying the jedi betrayed him.

    What I would have done would be to extend the battle like in the deleted scenes, but with the difference that the main reason Yoda has to retreat is not just because of Sidious having the high ground, but also because Clone Troopers start arriving with all the types of weapons, making the fight even harder for the Grand Master.
    The fight will still continue for some time, but eventually, after killing or evading various CTs, and seeing how cannot deal significant damage to the Dark Lord, and with more and more reinforcements arriving, he will then retreat....
    But not before using the remaining energy he has to execute a powerful Force Repulse or Wave (one more less OP like the one Pong Krell did when the 212th and 501st confronted him in the HQ chamber of Umbara, or even a more OP and devastating one like the ones of Starkiller). With the Repulse or Wave, all Clone Troopers remaining and coming (apart from Darth Sidious), will be knocked out at fast speeds against the walls, leaving them out for a while out of combat, giving them Yoda the time enough to escape and rendezvous with Bail Organa.
