A USA PRS with a bolt-on neck? Nothing untoward here, it just needs a proper setup and the tremolo needs to be set. Enjoy...
NOTE: Remember that some of these video's are recorded many months before they are released. I may have changed my opinion on something mentioned in this video by the time it is on RUclips so do not take my opinions as set! I may also be incorrect on some info posted here: my knowledge is not definitive! Victor...
DISCLAIMER: These are client video's (for my reference and for the client's record) so these video's should not be viewed as 'instructional' or 'how to' video's! I am posting this information to try and put an end to viewers informing me that my 'camera angle is wrong' or 'I missed such and such out' etc. These video's are for the benefit of the client and myself...
My information on setting the tremolo screws was incorrect! All 6 should be at the same height! Victor...
Thank you so much!! I was finally able to setup the trem on my guitar after a long time of struggling with it. The video was very helpful.
Wow! I wished I had seen this when I came out! Sucha great comprehensive vid on this elusive procedure! 🤙🏽
Prs recommends all swivel screws for the trem to be exactly equal to each other; regarding its height. So not just the upper and lower as a swivel. But I guess everyone has its own preference.
Yes, I found this information after I made thgis video! Thank you :)
Really love the details of My CE I have never seen Radiused Pickups and Pickup rigs before my CE
Greetings from Cornwall! Nice job Victor.
Cheers Ronnie! Lovely part of the country Cornwall :D
Thanks for this Victor, now i can set my trem up properly on my Prs custom Cheers
I have the exact same one. It's a sweetwater exclusive paint.
The pickups are the 85/15 model.
Really good demonstration. Thanks!
thank you for this vid. can’t find any other one on this shit.
07:15 Just FYI. Should probably edit this video. PRS bridges should rest equally on all the 6 screws, not the 2 outside ones. All screws must be the same height. Hope this helps.
Yes, I found that out the day I posted this video...
I thought all six tremolo scews were designed to be in full contact on PRS guitars?
Yeah, you're absolutely right! Did I not do that? Oops! I will let the client know...
Yeah man they're notched screws... the bridge has a knife edge that sits in the notches. If any screws are out of line you will damage the knife edge... that bridge is probably damaged now. I had a luthier work on one of mine and he messed my bridge up by trying to set it up like a strat trem. They're not the same
Also adjusting the screws with string tension on is a good way to ruin those too.
@@kbkman7742 Yes. That was how I damaged my Custom 24. The screws of the PRS bridge have to be all in line as the screws have notches. I hope the knife edges of the bridge was not damaged.
I was watching this video specifically for the reason of seeing how to address the trems 6 screws and the razor edge, and improve how the guitar returns to tune after using the bar. That's a very common issue with SEs and a lot of people are curious about how to perfect that knife edge and make it work properly. According to the PRS website, the 6 notched screws should rarely need adjusting. They shoukd all be even, and the trem should be 1/16th inch from the body. You definitely are not supposed screw them all the waydown that much and it definitely WILL cause permanent issues. You should consider editing this video to reflect the proper way to do it so people don't mesa up their guitars so much. Not trying to be overly critical, but like I said, this is a issue many are curious about but isn't addressed in many RUclips videos. While researching it, your video was one of the first to pop and I'm sure others will see it and possibly follow suit. Your videos are very informative and well done and in most cases people will rightly believe what you tell them.
Nice guitar there. I love these Charcoal bursts (blue, red, purple, green, and so on). Must admit I prefer the older CE's to the newer models, but they're good guitars nonetheless. The EB Cobalt strings aren't coated, they are strings that use a different alloy, with a lot more cobalt in the alloy than regular nickel strings, they supposedly make for more output and clearer tone--I've heard some people love them but most don't seem to like them from what I've seen, however, I haven't played them so I can't give any personal experience there.
Brilliant video mate. Could I use the same method to set the trem on a Strat ?
Hi and thanks... It's the same method for all floating tremolo's so yes! regards, Victor...
Just got my PRS 24 Standard and when I push down on the bridge it makes a clicking noise and goes sharp by a little bit? If push it back up from the bottom of the bridge it goes back in tune. is this easily resolved? Do I need to tighten anything?
Quick tips would be great. Just upgraded to PRS locking tuners.
I don't know. Never had this problem...
So only the outside screws need to be set the same and the others need to be 1/4 turn taller? I’m having issues with my PRs standard 24 I recently got used. The bridge was slammed to the body and I have been trying to get it set back up properly myself. I have tools and good mechanical skills, but for some reason the g string keeps sounding off like I didn’t intonate properly
Disregard 🤣 I finally got it worked out I think. But this video was super helpful
I believe PRS tremolo screws are all set at the same height! I found this out after I made this video. Victor...
I have been watching this and had just bought my guitar when had added locking tuners from prs.. however I believe the kid set u p my trem system wrong.. is there any chance of actually talking to you? not sure how he lowered the action... trying to follow along with you while looking at what he did
Hi... PRS screws have to be set exactly level with each other (different from a Fender). Google can help if you get stuck. Victor...
Great vid thanks
Was on the fence about the CE 24 till I seen you setup this one. That's 2 guitars I've picked up after watching you do a setup.
Great video!
You're great. Thanks!
Great video. But you did not mention how high you set the trem. So how many Business cards you used or mm you set it to. Or did I overhear that in the video?
Because that measurement is guitar or client specific depending on what action height is needed. Thes are client videos: they are not meant to be 'how to' or 'instructional' video's per se :)
My daughter has the custom SE(I am not a guitar guy) - the E&A (fat strings) were making a buzz sound as they hit frets. I was able to stop the buzz by adjusting the two little screws in the block where the string attaches - the tool was like an allen wrench and I raised the little blocks slightly. That worked - but wondering if that was the right thing to do - or should I have messed with the truss rod? (I know you'll say what the h are you touching it for --- I'm mechanically inclined).
By the way I bought 3 PRS this year (me, son, daughter) so we could learn how to play. We live in Maryland so I guess if I mess it up I'l drive over to the factory
It would take me too much time to say what is right/wrong but there is plenty of setting up info on youtube/google. Each way has plus/minus points. If you are unsure, take it to a tech. It would be easier and better for someone mechanically minded to actually learn it for yourself: you'll pick it up real quick. Victor...
thanks mate
Do the two outer screws on the bridge always need to be all the way in? Got my PRS yesterday, the bridge was super high (3mm), and I couldn't get action low enough. I have turned each screw same amount (around three quarters of a whole turn), and got it to about 2.1mm, which is much better. Will probably lower even more (PRS website says it should be 1/16 of an inch, which is 1.5mm or so).
Thing is, the outer screws are not all the way in. The bridge looks pretty much parallel to the body - skewed neither left nor right, though screws are not perfectly level. All screws are roughly on the same level, but there are some differences
All screws MUST be level on a PRS tremolo! If I didn't say that in the video it's because I didn't know myself. Each screw has a pivot point so they MUST all be level. Regards, Victor...
PS: If your action is still too low, check the relief? It may have too much so may need adjusting via the truss rod...
I have a CORTEK PRS SE CUSTOM 24 that will not stay in tune for more than 5 minutes of playing.(Not using the Vibrato arm) I have tried everything on it bar a new nut. It is a pig of a guitar. beautiful sound for the first 3 minutes then... Thanks for the info. FYI It is a Vibrato bridge NOT a tremelo. Tremelo is a change in volume, Vibrato is a change in pitch.
Yes yes yes: I know what we tend to call a tremolo system is really a vibrato! There was absolutely no need for you to mention it was there?
Love the video
Thanks Don :)
How to set the saddles right ? Thnx
Google 'setting intonation'
Call me tupid, but prs uses block saddles, and i am watching this on my phone, so cant see what is on this guitar.
What i can tell you is block saddles will throw a guitar out of tune based on their design. And in spite of that, it is apparantly cheaper and easier to mass produce than vintage, bent steel type.
All the guys that are notorious for tuning stability with non locking trems use traditional bent steel saddles. NOT block saddles.
Lets look at deaign of block saddles,...as i have one in front of me. The round ness, on the front of it is much less round than bent steel.
They are also grooved, and that tiny bit on the round front edge is grooved in a v shape. Put on some strong readers to see.
That v catches the strings and pulls it sharp usually on returns from dives.
PRS CE come from the factory with 9-42,at least the 22s did.
Okay...
85/15 pickups
Mine were swapped out in a heartbeat
Very educational video
I just got this exact guitar and kind of regret it because i can't bend strings without getting getting the other strings out of tune which is a bitch as i am finally getting good enough to where i play very clean. Now i suddenly can't grt the bending to sound right, especially when i have another open string ringing out (f.ex in i'll be there for u intro)
Is there a way to block off the tremolo so that it doesn't move when i bend strings?😆
You need to stretch the strings properly so it will stay in tune with tremolo use. Victor...
Hello, may I ask a question: I have a PRS Custom 22. Somehow the guy that set it up at some point convinced me to flush the tremolo on the body so now the screws are all the way in. What is the correct height in cm that the bridge should be at to make it a floating tremolo again ? thanks a lot.
Off the top of my head, the screw heads should around 4mm-5mm out of the body with the tremolo base-plate about 2mm off the body and angled slightly forwards (like on a Fender)...
I've just done a PRS 22 Custom (USA) so watch for that video in a few weeks (there is a queue)...
Great thanks for the quick response my friend! I will keep an eye for that video!
the tremolo bridge is floating 1/16" off the body, and the guy on the vid did it wrong, because all 6 screws are pivots, so they need to be leveled
@@redheart6995 1/16 bottom of plate to body? On the side? At the screws ? Thanks for the reply.
When would you adjust the bridge posts? I've noticed if I raise the action at the string saddles it stiffens up the playability a lot a makes it hard to bend. I have a PRS copy with a hipshot floating bridge, very similar to the PRS setup.
Re: When would you adjust the bridge posts? When the bridge is not in the correct place or if the client wanbted the guitar setting as a hardtail...
@@FretFriendGWaL thank you for responding. Just to clarify, would raising the bridge height or the individual saddles effect the intonation? Ruling out that the bridge is at the proper length from the nut.
@@pmayh3m It shouldn't change the intonation...
I have had a guitar sent to me which plays like a dream, sounds amazing... some of the strings do go out a little using trem although it was only set up 2 days ago and only got it yesterday.
The issue I have is the action feels great, but.... the bridge is sitting pretty much against the body, can just about see light between body and bridge but we are talking like a mm or less (you couldn't get a business card in there... put it that way).
Its definitely angled towards body, do I send it back in to them to adjust... which is a pain or can I simply adjust springs in the back without messing up any tuning, intonation or the way it plays...
Don't want to waste time running around if I don't have too but worse than that would be making my guitar sound like crap and not tune properly if I mess with it.
Any thoughts from anyone? Could really do with the advice lol
Some tremolo's do bend slightly forward. I know Fender use this method though not many people seem to like it that way. You can slightly tighten the springs then looses the strings to compensate. I'm afraid trial and error is your best solution: there is no right or wrong way. Victor...
@@FretFriendGWaL I forgot to mention... It's PRS
The trem on your PRS must sit flush, not higher or lower on one side like a Fender. It should be 1.6mm or 1/16th of an inch around the entire bottom. You MUST loosen the strings before adjusting screws or they WILL snap and ruin the knifeedge. Adjust springs accordingly and get that 1.6mm gap, flush all the way around.
I'm going to guess your set up guy thought PRS tremolos were supposed to be set up like a Fender which is not the case. Do not take another guitar to him. A simple google search would have given him all the specs and info he needed. I own a guitar repair and set up shop so I hate suggesting this but, as a guitar player you should learn all this stuff yourself. It's not hard, it must be done from time to time and you will save a ton of money.
Why do you adjust the fulcrum screws when PRS guitar techs say that they are factory set and shouldn’t ever need adjusting? They are set to share the load equally between the six so as to keep the trem working properly for the life of the guitar, guaranteed.
Errr... because they were NOT set right?
Did the 6 bridge screws have the grooves cut on the shaft near the screw head? Those grooves act as pivot points also. Or is that just the Core models I'm guessing.....
Why not get it in tune and start backing out the 2 claw screws just ENOUGH to let the 4 business cards fall loose. And then tighten the screws 1/2 or 1/2 turn to make the bridge bottom parallel to the top?
Because the way I do it is the correct way :)
People do it that way as well and it works fine. Either way is the "correct way". As long as it gets the job done.
Because with the tension of the strings you will most likely snap the heads off a screw and ruin your knifeedge. Take the time and do it right and save yourself a headache. You may have seen some kid do it once and it was fine, great. He was lucky. Do you want to be lucky or smart?
Is that 4 business cards you're usung?
Could be: I don't know! I haven't watched the video in a while. I will use as many as I need :)
Is it possible to hard tail a PRS trem?
Yes. Put a block in the cavity in the back of your guitar.
How would lemon oil damage the guitar?
I was talking about REAL lemon oil from a lemon tree! Like this: ultranl.com/products/lemon-oil-brazil/ It's like acid! Lemon oil you buy for guitar fret-boards in NOT lemon oil: it is mineral oil with a little lemon added to make it small nice! Pay attention!!! ;)
58/15 Pickups.
85/15 on the ce series. The numbers are the year they are trying to sound like/the year they were recreated.
Unfortunately, your instructions for setting up a PRS trem is TOTALLY wrong !!!!
Please watch the MannMade USA video by John Mann on how to correctly set up your trem.
Yes and I have already mentioned my methods were incorrect on this video in the comments section 2 or 3 times. I have changed the description to show this! Victor...
no fret buzz on low E with 1.6 at the 12th fret is simply bs.. with that action you get fret buzz no matter how well leveled are your frets even without hitting the string hard.. and I'm sure you know that.. ;-)
Sorry but I cannot agree! A colleague of mine with a Brredlove acoustic has an action as low as 1.25mm on the 12th fret with no buzz.
