    Beautiful work. A week ago I bought an abused 78 GL1k to restore, and I'm so happy with the decision. I bought my very first motorcycle when I was 19, and it was in 1978. I went into a Yamaha store to buy a dirt bike, saw a used yellow motorcycle in the front window, looked at it, saw that fantastic engine and walked out of there the delighted owner of a Sulfur Yellow '76 GL1000 with about 30,000 miles on it. Mint condition with a white Vetter fairing on it, I could smoke cigars while cruising the back country highways. I missed it badly for decades and just took my blue '78 for a ride tonight. It needed a lot of work just to get it ready for that first ride, and as you said, it needs work from one end to the other. But what a machine. The engine was designed by Honda's top F1 engineer to be the king of the American road, and in my opinion, the GL1000 is still the perfect tourer. Perfect for one rider with bags, and still great for two-up. Not as big as the 80's bikes, and much better looking, too. Smokes like a house fire on the left side on startup after a week. Has a nasty backfire on the right side for several minutes after initial cold start. Tires are shot. Mufflers are garbage. Seat frame rusted like a depression era tractor seat. Hideous and cramped ape hangers and the last owner actually CUT the rear fender off to give it a "bobber" look. Oh, and he removed the center stand with a jack hammer, it seems. But the motor is still beautiful, the frame and forks are perfect. All the gauge lights work, dim though. The rear caliper loves clinging to the rear rotor. Plain water in the radiator (original Japanese radiator cap and no bad seal :) ) Clutch is rather stiff and the gears clunk into place, but what a beauty she will be come spring. Thanks for the valve tips. I am sure I need to yank the carbs, so the valve seals will get replaced with the timing belts and those belt gear seals too, thanks for the tip. You are right about parts scarcity.

      Thanks Jerry. What a great story. We all have our fond memories of our first bike. You actually started off with a big bike back then but they were and still are an awesome machine. We are about the same age. I started off back in 1970 with a Honda Z50. Rode it until I grew out of it and went up to a CT70. Loved those bikes and had many Honda’s ever since. Now I restore them as a hobby. Congratulations on your new wing. They are a diamond in the rough but with time, money and the love of the machine you can get them back like new. I see so many older wings getting bobber chopped and I hate seeing them that way.
      Here’s a few I have restored. Good luck with yours. I’m sure you’ll do an outstanding job on yours. Keep well.

    Hello! Simplest way to remove valve springs: 1. Remove spark plugs. 2. Put 1,5-2 m of thin rope (paracord, etc) into spark plug hole. 3. Accurately move piston to TDC turning crankshaft with hands. 4. Do manipulations with valve springs, seals, etc. 5. Remove a rope. 6. Enjoy! Thank You for this video. I like BMW oilhead bikes and ride it for long time, but some months ago i bought an old 84' gl1200 and trying to put it back on the road.

      I was a Honda Technician for 5 years. GM master technician for 11 years and self employed for longer than I can count. Your method is far from the best. There are risks involved in doing it that way. I’m only responding to your comment so that anyone who reads it can judge for themselves. You will NEVER see your method in any manufacturers service manuals. Lets do things by the book and show them being done by the book, that way anyone coming here to learn they will learn the proper way to do things. Ride safe. God bless.

    Excellent video again. I own two 83 Wings....a dresser and a naked wing. Engineering marvels, and still pretty cheap to own. Great tips you are posting in your videos. By the way, it seems that most people on the Goldwing docs forum all agree that Saber Cycle seems to constantly rip--off its clients. I got burned, along with many others.....so, your luck may run out.....be careful with those rascals.

I didn’t have one negative thing happen. I can only speak as I find and they aren’t sponsoring me. I paid like everyone else. Very very happy with their products and service. Ride safe. Hello Paul and Kathy .. Excellent video on the gl1100. I have a 82 gl1100 standard with the amazingly functional Vetter windjammer fairing which gives the wing a very unique vintage look and has plenty of storage in the fairing itself .. so I really don't need the saddlebags or the trunk to keep the rear end looking stock and sleek. I also have a gl1800 which is a different beast but the gl1100 is my to go bike .. Keep up the good work and videos. Cheers.

If you ever hear of anyone in Alberta that approaches your skill level please let your RUclips subscribers know. Keep up the good work. Paul, I did a bit of reserching on Hondaline bags for your 1980 GL. Found a number of the Samsonite bags with trunks. But, from your pic of the bag you are looking for the ones that unlock from the rear, and then you tilt forward to remove. Would this be correct? I did find one, left bag only like them. I have the Bates bags and trunk on mine. The Bates are nice, but the Hondaline are nicer. And you are quite correct, they are rare, and EXPENSIVE!!!! Maybe "Don" has a set?? I know, dream on that it would be that easy to find.

    Paul, what is that poor looking sony remote to that was on your bench? Did Honda sell both the naked and full decked out models at the same time, and was their a lot of different in price?

    • @7863348
      @7863348  6 лет назад

      That’s for the old Sony stereo hanging above the bench. It works and sounds great but the remote have had a rough time. Paint thinners spilled on it along with other still but it works perfectly lol. Back in 1980 there were three goldwings offered. The Standard, the Interstate and the Aspencade, not sure of the pricing but it ended up that the standard was the rare one. Now guys are taking the other two and removing the other still to make them look like a standard. You can tell the fakes by them not have Honda emblems on their tanks.

    My 83 is in ok shape runs well , but since I changed the exhaust to an 82exhust (they said it would be the same) the carbs have been backfiring through the carb , and seems like it is getting worse. Its been a couple years since I had carbs off to clean them is that why?

    • @7863348

      I’d try re-installing the orginal exhaust to see if the issue leaves. Maybe the newer exhaust has internal damage causing back pressure.
