    Thank you so much for these recommendations. This video has helped us to have the most memorable holiday!
    My partner and I had originally planned to be in Sicily in May, and when that fell through, I came across this video. After watching, we ended up planning a trip to the Peloponnese based on your recommendations.
    Last week, we visited Nafplio and the ancient site of Epidaurus, and we are now in Gialova. We cannot thank you enough, Sara, for these recommendations. We would not be here if I hadn't seen your video. We are having the most special trip that we will remember for our lives.
    I highly recommend the Gialova area, especially in May before it gets too busy.

The Greek islands are over crowded in the summer time with all these ugly sun beds , especially on the island of Mykonos. I rather visit the mainland of Greece rather than the island . The only island I want to visit is Kefalonia . Thank you for your amazing video!

    In the winter of 1724 two French both philologists priests Michel Fourmon and Francois Chevin envoys of Luis the 15th ( French king) arrived in Constantinople to apply for permits to collect writings and inscriptions. Chevin came in contact with the Patriarch which pointed him the best libraries. But Fourmon wanted more in order to glory the name of his king. So he started visiting multiple archaeological sites and he started copying inscriptions or taking them if possible and whatever could not take it with him he destructed it either by smashing them or setting fire to it in order to save from the uneducated local peasants as he described them. In the February of 1730 he reached Sparta and Mani peninsula and there did his biggest destruction of all times. He stayed outside of it in the village of Zarnata. As he quoted : I erased her, I dug her up, I destroyed her, I didn't leave a stone upon a stone. He gathered 300 inscriptions and transported most of them with ships to France and the rest he destructed them to save them. He even took the Lycurgus Clause. He proudly wrote that he destroyed what even the Venetians had respected and for thousands of years no one had dared to touch. After Sparta, Amykles came next, where he demolished the temple of Apollo. He even entered the tombs with the help of the workers he hired to the tombs of kings:
    I scattered the ashes of Agesilaus to the wind, entered the tomb of Lysander, and discovered the tomb of Orestes.
    Thankfully when he returned to France, he was bitterly attacked by intellectual circles. They called him a "vandal" and called the destruction of the ancients one of the greatest insults in history. They denied the validity of the information and inscriptions he collected, precisely because the originals had not survived. The material he collected and hundreds of his letters were stored in the Royal Library of Paris, without anyone paying attention to them. Furmont's punishment was the discredit of his work and personal contempt. A nemesis who could have stepped out of ancient Greek tragedies, whom he so admired.
    All of the above are part of the book : “Multiple Antiquities - Multiple Modernities: Ancient Histories in Nineteenth Century European Cultures” by Gábor Klaniczay, Otto Gécser and Michael Werner.

    Very good! I will this in 2019, road trip of 12 days. The Peloponnese amazing and one could easily spend a month there. I wanted to ask... Is a road trip on Crete similar to a road trip on Peloponnese?

    • @SaraGoesLocal
      @SaraGoesLocal  2 года назад +1

      I prefer the Peloponnese, I also made a video about our trip to Crete, but the distances between interesting places are huge. It's also a lot more touristy in my opinion. It's nice but I wouldn't do it again. This year we are roadtripping across the North of Greece.

      @@SaraGoesLocal Ah wow okay. From what I have seen, Crete & Pelolonnede share a lot of landscapes, Venetian castles and houses, as well as both of their cuisines are more mediterannean than Balkan. Northern Greece (Thrace/Macedonia/Epirus centre) are a lot more Balkan in terms of ingredients and dishes, and the terrain is way more Alpine/Green. If you need any help/ideas, ask away. My dad was born in Florina and my maternal grandfather was from Kastoria (Both in Western Macedonia, up north)! 🙂

    For those who don't know!
    Today's Peloponnese of Greece used to be called More, the Greeks changed the name from More to Peloponnese, a place inhabited by Albanians. The people who were violently expelled in 1534 who went to the east of Italy and today are called the Arbëreshes of Italy. The Albanian land that Greece took from them took them by force, today it is called "Europe", living in a foreign land is a shame, but we will never forget it! Long live Albania.
