One of the best and healthiest canned proteins that I didn't see was sardines. Now I'm 64, served my country and ate a lot of nasty stuff, but I never even tasted sardines until this year. And they are awesome. I just mash em up and make a sandwich. Better than tuna, little to no Mercury(since they eat plankton). In olive oil they have like a 4 yr used by date and are actually good for you and recommended by doctors. Your video was well done and informative. Stay well.

Last yr with all the CA wildfires, I found out I was only family member with a disaster backpack. So I bought 5 backpacks in September and gradually filled them with flashlights, gloves, n95 face masks, solar charger, TP, maps, $150 cash, dehydrated & canned food, pet food, collapsible bogs, etc. Each bag had bout $500 worth of stuff. My 40+ yr old sons thought “what the hell is this about”. After Xmas when CV-19 was becoming a pandemic, boy were they excited about their gifts!! Three of us live in earthquake areas and three live in Indianapolis tornado area. I never dreamed they would need for a pandemic. These were the BEST gifts I ever gave to my family members!! EVERYONE should be prepared for disasters. Each keeps kit in their vehicle in case a disaster strikes when they aren’t at home. I was traveling in the Midwest when I got stuck on freeway due to huge multiple vehicle accident for almost 12 hr. I was able to eat and feed kids in other vehicles near me. So, get yourself prepared!!

Corned beef hash is great, fry it up with a can or two of diced potatoes, then make 4-6 holes in the skillet, add a pat of butter and crack an egg in each hole.. serve with toast - this stretches out your 14 oz can to a hearty meal for 4-6 people for around $5

I'm so broke I bought 2 cans of hard rolled oats for $2.63 each, off brand. One can makes 30 breakfasts. Can't beat that! Remember to save your bacon drippings and store in refrigerator. Great flavor, oil and a butter substitute. I also bought canned ham made in Canada from the "Gross Out" (grocery outlet). I sliced it thin, fried it and it was absolutely delicious. It cost around $3. Could make at least 10 meals for 1 person. Add to lentils soups too. We can make it folks! Get it now as inflation is gonna be out of this world. I am starting to realize this and also realize that meat products are killing us anyways with heart attacks/ clogged arteries/strokes. If that is your family tree. Instead of buying canned tuna/albacore that is Fukashimaed, just break out that fishing pool and dig up some worms in your back yard and head to the river. Raise a few chickens and feed them scraps, heck they dont even need that. They peck the ground for bugs in the soil. Our paper money will be good for fire starting and the 1% can't eat gold, unless they have really strong teeth. Watch every penny and make your money go farther, like with the one can of rolled oats making 30 meals for $2.63. God bless all of U struggling out there.

We've stocked up on food over the past few months as well. The first thing I did was make a food rotation plan based on each canned food's shelf life. All we have to do is eat 1 day of food storage a week. We bought canned fruit, veggies and meats to stick with the basics and avoid all of the chemicals and other "bad" ingredients that are in premade canned foods. I love Keystone meats, just meat and a little sea salt. Open the can and you've got a little fat which can be used to saute your aromatics and about 2/3 cup of broth which can be used to build a sauce. Last week I made spaghetti with their ground beef, 2 cans of crushed tomatoes and pound of dried pasta and it was fantastic...$9 for a good 6 servings, a far better value than freeze dried or other "emergency" food. I tried everything before we stocked up and good thing too. Both SPAM and DAK hams are disgusting IMHO...I had high hopes for the ham, but not to be. I also don't like the ingredients in canned chili (TVP) or canned pasta like ravioli, preferring to make our own. Over the years I haven't had much luck with canned soups most being far too salty but Campbell's Chunky soups now have lower salt versions that are pretty good as well as the store brand versions (generic) and it makes a good meal if served over rice. I've also been able to stock up our freezer to bursting over the past few months by shopping sales at our local grocery store and butcher. Our latest acquisition is 3 porterhouse steaks for $6.29/lb and a few weeks ago a whole pork loin for $1.29/lb that I cut up into 2 nice roasts and 8 boneless pork chops. I put everything in gallon Ziploc freezer bags and get ALL of the air out using the water displacement technique which is awesome as unlike a vacuum sealer uses far less expensive bags, is silent, can be done without power and doesn't take up valuable kitchen real estate. By repackaging everything without the bulky store packaging I can fit far more into our freezer. I also scored a brake bleeder kit and FoodSaver's jar adapter kit so I can vacuum seal dry goods like rice, rolled oats, beans etc. into wide mouth quart canning jars, also independent of electricity. After years of contemplating the options I finally got stocked up like I wanted to. Freeze dried foods were always way too expensive and I hesitated on canned foods as I didn't want to waste money without a plan to rotate through it. A few other products to mention, Sardines in olive oil, canned mushrooms and evaporated milk (yes, I know the last 2 aren't canned meat). I don't like powdered low fat milk, so instead, with a 12oz can of evaporated whole milk you add another can full of water to make milk and it's a good amount (3 cups), tastes pretty good and is great for cooking. Just my 2 cents, good luck to us all.

    • @tomj528
      @tomj528 2 года назад

@@krisqueen5939 I use ordinary Ziploc gallon freezer bags and use the "water displacement technique" which you can find in a few videos on here to see it. I like to use our pasta pot/stock pot, filling it halfway full with water. I seal the bags leaving about an inch unsealed with my index finger in the gap to ensure that it allows the air to escape instead of accidentally sealing. Then I push the bag under the water, forcing the air out of the bag and making sure to dip the locking seal below the water line but leaving the water line below the top of the bag and then I seal the last inch of the locking seal. I pull it out of the water, press the entire seal again to make sure it's well seated and then dry off the outside of the bag and it's ready for the freezer. Another tip, I roll the opening of the bags inside out before filling the bags so nothing gets on the seal. This works very well for grocery store meats, butter, English muffins, etc. Everything we get from our local butcher is wrapped in butcher paper so no excess packaging and it's good for up to a year in the freezer so no reason to repackage it.
The brake bleeder kit was $20 if I recall and I got it from Amazon. There are many different ones listed but they're all the same and made in China like everything else these days.

Be adventurous and try stuff, I found chicken bologna, sounds crazy, but, it was pretty good, mild flavor and NOT overly salty. I buy one of something, try it and then make a buy/pass decision on adding it to the pantry. Lastly, cheap does not always mean bad. Food insurance is the perfect term! I can't say how important this is. As a child my family had to head into the WV hills for shelter during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Canned goods were about the only option back then except for WW2 MREs. Canned meat and canned fruit topped everyone's list. I remember vividly watching my parents load up our 1960 brown Rambler station wagon and heading to the hills around the Greenbriar Hotel. This is to say how true your advise is for today's times.

Lentils are a very good protein. During WW2, the ppl were told to replace meat with lentils. My parents were survivers of WW2 and depression. After all this was over, I was born, my mom continued using lots of lentils and continued cooking in that style.
Whenever ppl thi nk of lentils, all they know is lentil soup. My mom used lentils as meat and to stretch the meat. I though ya'll might like knowing what she did with lentils.
She made bbqs (some ppl call them slopy joes) she added cooked lentils to the mixture and it tastes the same.
She made beef stew and added lentils while cooking (at end). Stretched the meat.
She made lentil gravy. Added lentils to our gravy and not as much meat eaten.
And then there was the lentil gravy that she added cut up green beans, mushrms. carrots, whatever she had. Put this lentil gravy over mashed potatoes, noodles or rice. It was a meatless meal.
There was a lentil burger made by mixing cooked lentils, ( drained) egg, breadcrumbs and whatever spices you like. Clove of fresh garlic in there. Formed into patties and frozen. Cook frozen. Lettuce, tomato and a bun. Good, but not as good as a hamburger.
I made lentil hummus once. Got recipe from www. It was just smashed up lentils, oil, garlic and spices. It was good, but work. Good for sandwiches if need be.
If didnt have broth for soup or gravy, she used bullion cubes. Works well in a pinch. Im stocked up on them. Store well and dont take up much space.

@@strawberrytart321 I canned for years on an electric cooktop. Now using propane. With either one, it's simply a matter of learning how to regulate for your individual stove. After using electric for so long, I thought it was harder when using propane. An easy way to learn is to can water for a few times. No you don't have to put lids on the jars, unless you want to store some sterile water for emergency/first aid use. Just can water, as if you were canning broth.
If you have a Presto canner with the standard 15 lb weight, buy their adjustable regulator. Part number is 50332. I ordered it for 2 of mine. You adjust the regular to either 5, 10 or 15 lb pressure. Using this regulator makes it easier to maintain pressure at the desired setting. Don't have to fine tune the stove dial setting as finely.
      Hope this helps, a bit.

A good investment to make, is a pressure canner. Prices on canned meat has increased considerably. For instance, Keystone Meats were 7 or $8 last year. Thank you for the information! I want to add one more thing to your list. Dirty Moore Beef Stew!I live in Hurricane country! I just wanted to give you this information you may or may not like! When the power is out and I don't have time to get the camp stove out Ditty More Beef Stew can be eaten cold out of the can. Now I didn't say it is really good that way, just that it can be eaten that way. Trust me don't do many of the other things cold out of the can. There are some other things that can be eaten cold out of the can, but not many. Don't do chili! But one my favorite ways to do the Ditty Moore Beef Stew is to put the stew in a pan fill the can with water and add that to the stew then add about 1 or 2 Table Spoons to rice to it. You can adjust the amount you want. And there are other things that can be added to to get it to feed more than one or when doing a lot of work clearing tree limbs off the house or whatever you need more than the one can. The can has a lot of beef, potatoes and carrots, not a lot of water. It is my #1 go to!

agamum1 in Milwaukee u can find KeyStone at Walmart n meijer. They always stock the cans way down on the bottom shelfs. You have to look very closely cause it almost looks like someone hides them. You can find chicken most of the time. But the rest r harder to find. The prices reasonable. They r the healthiest can meats out there. It is made in USA n only ingredients is meat n cube of salt. I have a stock of a bunch of those cans. They r 28 oz. I am 70 yrs young n my family thinks I am losing it because I stocked up on so many. The expiration dates r awesome. Bear Creek produces r good too. I am going to try the beef KeyStone with the package of bear creek stroganoff pasta mix. Bear creek comes in a package, it is also soup mix. U can just add water n if u want add meat or veggies to it if u want too but u don't have to add anything it is eatable just as the soup mix. I just read that KeyStone is Amish I never seen that. One advise is do not order KeyStone from Walmart. I ordered an the cans were all dented. Not a little but a lot . I returned all of them. Stay safe n keep prepping.

We recently purchased 4 new storage shelves units because our food storage has increased. The shelves are bigger and the actual shelf is a recycled plastic/rubber composite board. The old shelves were wooden pressboard and a few spills proved how useless they were as they swelled and fell apart. Meat has increased significantly in some grocery stores, so your advice of stocking up on canned meats and other meals is spot on. By the way, Campbell's Tomato soup cans are good for about 5 years past the "use by" date, 7/2015. Good advice on all points. I also can some of our dried beans for heat & eat meals. Also experimenting with cooking beans and rice separately, then, dehydrating them for "instant" beans and "instant" rice. Can combine or use separately. Add boiling water at approx 1:1 ratio to rehydrate in a few minutes. Another form of "heat & eat". Dehydrating frozen mixed vegetables, for example and storing them in vac sealed mason jars greatly reduces storage space needed. I use a FoodSaver with the jar sealing attachment. It's easy to toss a handful of mixed vegetables, dehydrated onions & celery, into a pot with some type of meat and cook for a hearty meal. Cook with rice for even more nutrition and meal extender, as well.

Use heritage breeds...a good combo egg/ meat bird for example is Production Reds, R.I. Reds, Barred Rock... just a few examples. They can forage for food, and you can feed them most scraps you will have from making meals or left over stuff before it turns. And eggs from home chickens taste so much better than store (the meat does too).

    I don't consider myself a prepper
But I do like to be well prepared in case of an emergency. So I go grocery shopping throughout the months and I purchase a few items here and there only when they are on sale and store it in a ready box
So I don't have to panic last minute and try to go buy everything all at once leaving other people without anything
Great video take care and be safe

Thanks for the suggestions and sharing your knowledge. We also buy canned bulk sausage and jars of pickled pig feet. We used to eat canned anchovies, but after my spouse developed Gout, we stopped buying it. I found canned, cooked ground beef (called Beef Sprinkles) at Dollar General. It's the only store I know of that sells it.

Did you know you can make your own "hamburger rocks"? You can cook and dehydrate hamburger, yourself. A lot of backpackers do it to have lightweight trail food. If interested google hamburger rocks for more information & how-to. Thanks for the tip on Dollar General. I'll check ours next time I go in that direction.

Love your honesty. I think it makes no sense to not be prepared even if you doubt infrastructure failures and what not. We have blackouts supply chain issues and many other reasons to just set aside a few bucks worth of shelf stables to set aside for when not if situations arrise requires.

canned bacon is insanely expensive per pound...

BUY and freeze ground beef.. most bang for the buck

I pressure can bacon. It is super easy to do. I usually do it with bacon ends. Not that it is any cheaper but I like the end product better. The texture is not the same as fried. It is like a smoked pork. I do 1/2 pint jars. I like to put a heaping table spoon and a big pile of greens in a skillet. No left overs. :) Pressure canning ground beef is more involved. Flavor is good and super convenient. My your pantry be ever full.

I have nearly everything on your list (except the Yoder's and a couple others). Yes, it was amazing to watch stuff like SPAM disappear from Walmart overnight. Insofar as it not being "health food," it all is protein and calories - both absolutely essential in many survival situations.

I bought about 25 cans of the corned beef, from Brazil or Argentina. Ive always liked the stuff , and I once found two cans in the house that were both 17 years old. Man, they tasted delicious, better than the fresh cans being made now.
I found for the money and content, Armour brand Chili with beans is tops. I bought the 24 once cans for $2.24 a piece ( they were on sale) Each can has about 900 calories, so one can + a few cups of rice should take care of you for a whole day. Now for my bugout or go bag, I have tins of sardines, packed in oil. Each tin weighs 3.75 ounces and they are small, thin and compact, about the size of a deck of playing cards. Each tin has 340 calories and 14 grams of protein. They store so easily in my go-bag. I dont really like sardines but they are mainly for a total emergency, when you have to flee your home at a moments notice. Plus, I have a dog that will need food too, so if I really dont want them and can scrounge something else, Willow my dog will be happy to eat the sardines herself.
