In my opinion, Cathy depicts the devious, conceited, and annoying characteristics of peter better than anyone I've seen. She does a great job of brining true boyhood to this role, the good and the bad. I think this works really well for this production as the entire show leans deeper into the comedy of the musical than other renditions. Additionally, I would like to mention the phenomenal skills of Tiger Lily and the intricacies of the choreo throughout this rendition. Watching Ugg-a-Wugg as a kid is my earliest memory of appreciating form, the grace and strength with which Dana moves amazes me to this day. Not to mention the performance of the entire ensemble in that number and the choreographers ability to work someone as young as Michael into the number seamlessly.
I got to see her perform it again live (with most of the original cast, too!) in 2005 with my mom. She was just as fantastic as in the recording I used to obsessively watch as a kid.
I got to see Cathy back when I was little, with a friend, in Los Angeles. It was the BEST experience. We sat front row. And she made effort to fly directly over us to shower us with fairy dust since we were cheering her so enthusiastically. I loved it so. So much so that I've been looking for this particular show for ages to remember it. And I still have fond memories of it even though memories of other things have faded.
Did they just filmed the broadway production in front of an audience at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts in La Mirada, California @whatdafuq715
I had the honor of seeing her last tour playing Peter Pan in 2012. I remember the audience gasping at her crazy acrobatics on the wire during the flying scene. Hard to imagine a 60 year old moving like that, she was amazing!!!
Mary martin version is a super classic but this version is a master piece and Cathy Rigby does this so amazing :) just saying it the Mary martin one and this one are 2 of the best there is! :D
Daughters loved this on TV… when this came to Tampa around 2011/2012,, we sat in the center… when Cathy flew above us, we got showered in pixie dust and it was amazing. She signed autographs after, it was an amazing core memory with my daughters
I’ll be honest this holds a special place in my heart because I saw Cathy Rigby’s LAST performance of this ever live. Like retired after. I have the dvd and merch 😂
This play is so funny and heartwarming. And also surprisingly mature...and ngl a little dark. Just as any good fairytale should be. I mean the backstory they give Peter is absolutely heartbreaking. The entire number of "Once Upon A Time and Long Ago" and the scene after it are so sad. But it explains a lot about why Peter acts the way he does, and Cathy Rigby does SUCH a good job of portraying both Peter's innocent joy and his complex feelings about adulthood that come as a result of being abandoned like the other Lost Boys. I LOVE his character arc. Going from being bitter about his past and wanting to encourage the Darlings to literally stay children forever like him, to realizing that maybe growing up isn't all that bad if it means that there will always be new generations that he can inspire. And though he must accept the sad reality that people he loves will come and go, he's able to accept growing up (at least for others) because now he knows that he'll never truly be alone just as long each generation is taught to embrace childhood wonder and imagination in addition to maturity. Not just one or the other. It stays true to the original book's themes while also being its own story and making changes to the characters that I personally really like. In my opinion, this musical is the best adaptation of Peter Pan. And I'm saying that as someone who literally majored in animation in college. I like the Disney version too. But the musical has a more mature and complex message, while also managing to keep an overall positive and humorous tone. And I know some people may want to smack me for saying this...but I think this version also has better songs than the Disney version. I was obsessed with this play as a kid, and tbh I still am as an adult. There have been so many different adaptations of Peter Pan, but I think this one will always be the best in my eyes. Also my younger brother was Captain Hook when his theater group put on this play, so that's fun :)
I love everything you said and agree with it wholeheartedly! I've been saying the same thing about this production for years and I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way!
I really think the Disney version misses the point of Peter Pan. It was my favorite as a kid, but I don't think it understood what made Peter Pan special.
this was so poignant from my childhood😭😭😭 cathy is a materclass. No wonder im a theatre actress now for a living! this truly stuck with me. i wore out my VHS copy also like everyone said as well😂
So I am a dancer and are dance studio for are theme this year is Peter Pan an we use a lot of music from this show so I decided to finally watch it and I love it 😍
It’s a shame they never did a recording with Sandy Duncan in the lead. She was the first to have the role. It said she was amazing, particularly because this was after the surgery that had blinded her in one eye.
A better way to bring Peter Pan's shadow to life: Hire an extremely agile and athletic stuntwoman who is the same height as Cathy Rigby, and wears a black full-body spandex.
It's looks like new DVD releases review history books documentary about it take a few days before New year would be there in the past few years before New year 2016
It’s amazing in the other version and the book the wife of George darling and the mother of Wendy John and Michael her name is Mary and In this one her name is Sylvia
Personally I thought the Disney version of this story was delightful, this musical version is quite good too. Walt Disney’s mission was to make old stories more accessible and joyful for children and therefore that’s why he turned them into animations.
@@jakej2256 Considering this post was made 4 months ago I don't think they're talking about the animated version. I think they're talking about the newest live action remake. I know that the animated version has received some criticism because it was made in the 1950s and there are some bits that are considered offensive or outdated by modern standards. But other than that, I think that most people like the animated version and admire Walt Disney's mission. It's considered one of the great classic animated films. I'm actually an animator myself, and Peter Pan, among many other classic Disney films, are what inspired me to pursue my dreams. But sadly today, Disney doesn't seem to appreciate its own animation as much as they should. They keep making live action remakes that don't really need to be made and that frankly do a much worse job retelling fairytales than any of their animated films have. I don't think all of them are awful. I'd even call Maleficent and The Little Mermaid pretty good. But none of them are truly great movies that I want to watch over and over the way I do the animated films. And honestly I think that's most people's opinion too. The only reason Disney even continues to make live action remakes is because it's easy money. They know that some people just have so much nostalgia for the stories that they'll watch them retold again and again even if those retellings are bad. And from what I've heard, the new Peter Pan and Wendy remake is pretty terrible. They miss the mark on a lot of the original story's messages. I think that's what op was talking about.
It is super uncomfortable watching a very whitewashed performance. I realize it was 1990, but 1990 wasn’t really that long ago. The original Terminator came out in 1984. Back to the Future was 1985. Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were 1994. Heck, Beauty and the Beast was 1991.
Maybe ........ or just a very gentle boy character that will eventually change into a man if he grows up ..which he is trying to avoid! One interpretation from the movie was that Peter Pan did not want to grow up because that meant getting old..... and eventually dying. Maybe better not tell you young viewers that .Just letting my grandson watch, Just lovely!♥♥♥🔮
I would have my grandmother check this out every week from the library. This has a special place in my heart.

Jane and Peter pan in later today
My grandparents taped the Mary Martin version when it reaired many many years after it premiered. We damn near wore that tape out.
Oh gosh I remember renting this from the library too!!
I had my mom check this out weekly from the library too. It’s probably my favorite Peter Pan adaptation
So glad they captured this entire performance on video. The definitive Pan and Hook performances….period.
Sandy Duncan's the definitive Pan
I’m sorry, but that’s extremely debatable. What about Mary Martin.
@@Leamichellefan2244 - I never found her Pan to be childlike. Mary Martin played the role; Sandy Duncan inhabited it.

I absolutely love this Mr Darling/Captain Hook!!
This was the first musical I ever watched, it’s what made me love them so much
Jane Peter pan I just love so much it's looks like it I just love it so much
I haven’t seen this in years ….. my grandma got the vhs for me we would watch it all the time … how time flies
In my opinion, Cathy Rigby makes the most best actress to ever play Peter Pan in a musical like this!
The place this holds in my soul is indescribable.

I grew up with this version of peter pan. #1 top favorite. Keep this alive forever❤😊❤❤😊😊❤
Why that audience wasn't on their feet, I'll never know! This was wonderful!
I got to see the in 1990 on Broadway. Seeing this woke up the actress in me!!
This was such an iconic part of my childhood. I lost the VHS when my mum passed and I’m so happy I found it here ❤️
