I joined one of Pakistan’s best Unis after getting my PhD from the US around 9 years ago. Worked there for 5 years. Our students are outstanding and helped me do some amazing research. I even opened a startup to try to create jobs and make myself financially stable. I eventually came to the realization that buying plots would have been better. As far as local startups go, the cost of doing business was way too high and banks and high equipment import costs (through legal channels) ensure that you don’t make a profit. Eventually I moved back abroad. The majority of my former students are now doing PhDs and research in the US and EU. I advised most of them to help their country indirectly and carefully consider the decision to move back. I don’t see things improving unless the elite capture is done away with. There’s no doubt our youth is our biggest asset, however, our system is holding them back and prevents them from reaching their true potential.

you are right, i have also wasted 10 years of my life, try to initiate startups and businesses, and sure young generation are talented but most of the time they struck in , due to financial dependecy of families, endless cycle , while elite captured all the resource and on that, move resources to other countries and live lavish life, miserable life there.

I honestly admire your bravery Shahzad! It takes immense guts to actually name Malik Riaz. Since Khans removal, this is now the third government but no one’s actually naming Malik Riaz. TV channels don’t have the freedom to speak the truth.
At this point, only chance for Pakistan is a revolution unfortunately. There’s gotta be a tipping point for the people. And I’m certain it’s quite near.
Pakistan has never truly been independent. We’ve always been under colonial rule. The only difference is, after the British left, the colonisers have been our own people. This time, Pakistanis need to get independence from the state of Pakistan.

Corruption is a problem, but not insidious if the wealth remains within the country working on creating further economic activity. The Pak problem is that the country is looted to transfer wealth to foreign countries. Dubai is just a tip of the iceberg. Multiply that by, say, 10. Essentially, the total debt, ~150$B, is looted and put to work outside the Pak.
The economic, intellectual, moral, and civilizational bankruptcy of Pakistan is comprehensive, thorough, complete, and irreconcilable.

And why would they? They (elites) know their policies will not bring Pakistan back to normal, so push money outside to keep value, while their policies generate more money in Pakistan for them. Shehzad - respect your brave decision to plough this lonely furrow. Must be frustrating to see the same story played out with different characters as heroes and villains while the thieves can change laws to legally steal.

Me and my wife had a small business. We are white collar people making good living for ourselves. But recently we both were able to sleep only 5 hours and working round the clock and still barely making ends meet. I moved to UK and my wife is selling business and she'll soon be here too. We wont invest in Pakistan ever again. All because of economic conditions and bribe culture.

Apologies for the long comment 😰
Between minute 6-6.30 you said Ambanis and adanis are at least investing in the country - is that not the equivalent of Khata hay to lagata bhi to hay? Given your discussion with Rosita Armytage was about this whole thing and how you have mentioned several times that the elite thinks that because unho ne ye factories lagayi hui hain to unki wajah se employment hay etc.
I believe you could have made a stronger argument there and would love to know how you'd objectively approach the difference between the intellectual prowess of india (or any other country)'s elite. Likely that you have answered it further in the video so will listen to it and reply if I think you've answered it.

It’s still better than rent seeking, making money and then taking that money to Dubai

    • @faizanmallick2408

@@ThePakistanExperience Understand your point. The whole economic-political landscape of pakistan is multilayered and looking at it in 0s and 1s won't get us anywhere. Love how you've over the course of TPE have worked so hard to do that. Obviously it isn't humanly possible for you to do it all in totality. But I have certainly found myself more informed and unlearned a lot to develop a new perspective and probably have made more room in my personality for objectivity over emoational appeal.
This particular argument about Indian v Pakistani elite you made I think was unlike you. Looking at GDP per capita vs dubai investments, Pakistan's GDP per capita is around 62% of india's and investments are 64%. Again it is just one data point, but I think Dubai-wise our elite hasn't done too bad compared to them lol.

    Dear Shehzad ji,
Please make a podcast with former FBR Chairman Shabar Zaidi regarding Dubai leaks. Every type of corruption is usual & normal in a society of unaware, unwise public. Even media houses & senior journalists become purchasable. However social media in Pakistan is performing its duty to some satisfaction. Thanks
