    We were an African American family , and back in the seventies , my entire family watched this show. So well written, tremendous acting, in fact my dad worked at a factory, overnight, get home at 730 sleep till 1130am, wake up and we would watch it together. Miss those days . Miss great shows like this.

    Helen Gallagher was on fire! The writing was perfection. Ilene Kristen should have been nominated for an Emmy. Someone else said it here - you can see what Delia is thinking even when she doesn't have a line. I used to have a bit of animosity that Helen Gallagher won THREE Emmys for RH because I grew up watching and rooting for the NBC soaps. However, thanks to these clips and watching the show on SoapNet, I can certainly see why she won those Emmys. Anyone else think a RH reboot would be a great idea?

      No, I don't think a RH reboot would work because the world has changed so much. The power of the show was in the fact they were first generation Irish immigrants in New York, negotiating all the cultural heritage that went with that to modern American life.

      @@DeepScreenAnalysis This! I was thinking more along the lines of actors being hired that can't hold a candle to the cast here, but you hit the nail on the head about the show as a whole.
      Although, I think GH mentioned recently that a (very-much alive) Maeve still sings "Johnny Boy" at Ryan's Bar and I'll settle for that 😊

    • @laken44
      @laken44  Год назад +4

      Back around 2009 or so I lived in NYC and had an idea for a reboot that would have incorporated NYC as it was at that time. Pat would have just died of cancer brought on by his having wanted to be on the frontlines as a doctor on 9/11, and one of the grandchildren would find themselves being drawn to someone who worked for a real estate development company that was looking to bulldoze and gentrify the block, including Ryan’s. I never wrote it down and it flew out of my mind completely when I moved to LA; that’s all I remember.

    Delia was a classic case of a person drowning in her own misery. And in order to make herself feel better she took full advantage of all the Ryan's by using lies and manipulations in order to have a place in their lives and to feel as if she belonged. There are REAL people in the world who behave in this sick and twisted way. She was in desperate need of a therapist...

    • @laken44
      @laken44  Год назад +7

      She did start seeing Dr. Pagano after this, I remember. And I feel like between that (and the recast to Randall Edwards from 1979-82) it did take some of the edge off this sort of frantic desperation.

And I also loved her as Roxie on "One Life to Live," even if she was often exploited by the writers for her camp factor (which was OK). And Helen Gallagher ... wow! Dee: "How could I know how to get pregnant?" Really Dee? Two doctors in the room and you ask such a stupid question? I'm no doctor but even I know that was one of the oldest tricks in the book. Pretty stupid question from someone who already had a little boy. The fake sniffling and no tears were so annoying and so was the grotesque smile she did when she pretended to cry. There wasn't one tear from her.

      Catherine Hicks was the best. Faith Catlin’s Faith was kind of an emotional mess. Then Nancy Barrett as Faith came flouncing in with her long blonde hair and chirping, “I’m all better now!” She lasted about 30 seconds. And Karen Morris Gowdy’s Faith was a total cold fish. Hicks was warm and likable and versatile.
