The M26 Pershing really was quite the overmatch for the T-34-85. It's frontal armor was essentially impenetrable to the 85mm gun and there was essentially no range that the M26 could realistically hit the T-34-85 that it wouldn't penetrate unless the shell struck at a very unlucky angle (as happened sometimes with older conventional full-caliber style AP projectiles). However, the M26 were very few in number as their production was very short lived due to the end of WW2 so there were only a little more than 4,500* ever made due to the lack of a need. Once the Korean War kicked off the M26's replacement, the M46 (which was just a Pershing with a lot of improvements) was already in production so there wasn't a need for more M26s to be made. In fact a lot of M26s were busy being converted to M46s (yes the tanks were that similar that the older M26s could simply be updated to the M46 standard). For a bit of a comparison in hard stats (these don't tell the full story but they'll give you an idea of why things unfolded the way they did). Frontal Hull Armor (effective thickness): -Pershing: 155mm (102mm inclined at 42 degrees) -T-34-85: 90mm (45mm inclined at 30 degrees) Frontal Turret Armor (effective thickness) -Pershing: 216mm+ (102mm mantlet, 114mm underlapping turret face, spall shield of unspecified thickness) -T-34-85: 180mm (90mm mantlet, 90mm underlapping turret face though coverage was to a lesser degree) Maximum Armor Penetration (best AP shell available, only using data at shared test ranges): -Pershing (T33 AP): 211mm at 100m, 200mm at 300m, 193mm at 500m, 178mm at 1000m, 174mm at 1500m, 150mm at 2000m, 139mm at 2500m, 128mm at 3000m -T-34-85 (BR-365): 119mm at 100m, 115mm at 300m, 111mm at 500m, 102mm at 1000m, 93mm at 1500m, 85mm at 2000m, 76mm at 2500m, 70mm at 3000m There are also other factors like the Pershing being considerably less cramped than the T-34-85, having actually pretty good sights for it's time (unlike the T-34-85), being an exceedingly stable platform due to it's design and weight, having decent commander's sights (again, for the time), etc. There are a lot of soft factors that go into why a tank is successful and they're often have a greater impact than strict hard stats if the tanks are even roughly comparable. Unfortunately by the standards of their day, they were not even remotely comparable even if the difference seems minimal to us by modern standards were tanks are armored to resist shells with 600-800mm+ penetration values. It's all about context. The M26 Pershing crews back then also had absolutely no way of knowing this. They likely knew that their tanks was pretty good, they might've even known that it was likely better than their opposition...but there is simply no way that they logically could've assumed that their vehicles were that much better because assuming something like that and turning out to be wrong is how you get yourself killed. It is always safer to assume that you're at best on par with your enemy when it comes to such things. After all, making such assumptions when you don't know is simply laughing in Death's face and asking him not to laugh back. As a final note there is also one last very important thing to touch on. The M26 Pershing was "practically" frontally impenetrable to the 85mm D-5T anti-tank gun the T-34-85 carried. However, there were two weak spots where it likely would've been capable of penetrating at close range. These weak spots are actually quite infamous. The bow machinegun port in the hull and the coaxial machinegun port in the turret. Both incredibly small targets but important to note regardless. There's also the obvious factor that none of this matters if they got to the M26's side because it's armor was only 76mm on the sides, still much greater than the T-34's but still completely vulnerable. No tank is invulnerable, no tank has ever been invulnerable. Some tanks have just been notably harder to kill in their time.
Tldr the T-34-85 is a medium tank, with rushed production and design due to the brutal war going on when it was designed. The M26 is a heavy tank produced very late into a war that was already guaranteed to be won by the point it was made, and had many amentities unavailable to the 85. Both North Korean and UN tankers were both extremely brave and fought hard with both machines
@@geraldl33playz79 and I didn't choose to use APCR for either tank because it was rare and expensive to produce and it just hurts the T34 even worse because the Pershing's had over 300mm at a similar range. Permitting APCR makes it even more of a slaughter.
You guys are doing great things!! This gave me a nostalgic feeling for the type of shows The History Channel had(when it was good lol) or like the type of show your teacher would show you in class in high school but ya know this is something actually interesting. You guys are killing it and the progress you guys are showing on your animations and detail is amazing! Keep on keeping on!
It wasn't really "ineffective" the HVAP round probably traveled through the turret and killed everyone in it, with the driver probably unaware of what happened
@@YukarisGearReviews What you said. None of the NK crewmembers were really that smart. Probably didnt even know they were hit, and if they thought they were hit, probably thought the round did no damage.
This was the tunsgten cored HVAP round which had insane performance against flat armor. Main AP fired by Pershing’s 90mm gun wasn’t that strong,it was toe to toe with Tiger I’s 88mm Pzgr 39.But still very effective against T-34s rather thin armor.
I'm going to say this now. Yarnhub. Your animations are so perfect, at 3:14 you captured the expression of these M26 Pershing crewmembers, and also added sort of a blur to it. You really captured the moment right there. From your earliest video to this video. This has been a Improvement. You should keep on making more of these videos!
Do not take the comparison seriously: the T-34 was handed over as an outdated weapon. T-34 = M4. The USSR already had the T-44 and T-54. The T-54 was superior to the M26 and caused panic if it was delivered to Korea.
The M26 was already being replaced by the M46 and the M47 was just around the corner. The HEAT projectile on the M47 in particular was more than capable of dealing with the T-54, and the M46 had a less powerful HEAT round that could still dispatch a T-54 frontally under certain circumstances. Both the M46 and M26 could deal with the T-44. The M48 was pretty much on par with the T-54 in protection, and had the same gun as the M47. They were also somewhat more survivable vehicles and had somewhat better visibility. Both the M47 and M48 were in service by the end of the Korean War due to fears of the T-54 being deployed. I'd expect the (at the time) fairly limited number of T-54s to suffer some decent losses as well as the T-44s. In turn however the M26, M46, 47, and 48 were also completely vulnerable to the T-54, and battles would depend entirely on infantry and air support plus positioning. The Soviets also operated T-34-85s as a combat vehicle up to the early 60s. Other vehicles like the ISU-152 and IS-2 made it into the 80s and 90s.
@@rebelgaming1.5.14 the shaped projectile was unreliable against sloping armor. A 105mm cannon was used against the T-54. Heavy losses are expected if the Koreans fight against the Americans.
Gotta hand it to you Yarn, your videos keep getting better and better, and these men along with all of those who fought have guts of steel to make it this far into the war, keep up the amazing work
It used to take them like a full month to get a video that was like in 2D but now they're cranking out these videos in like a week this is just amazing

fun fact: alot of crews preferred the upgunned sherman over the pershing due to the reliability, and (for some) familiarity of it due to the previous war. In addition, alot of bridges were too weak for pershings, so many had to keep using SHerman tanks until better ones were constructed for the heavy beast.
@@AFT_05G IT WAS A NIGHTMARE for tiger crewmen. ALot of the time, they had to wait for engineers to make sure a suitable crossing was available. And if there wasn't, costly train rides or long detours had to surfise. It was one of the main reasons why tiger tank encounters were rare on the western-american front. Other than lack of numbers, they were often used on the eastern front for heavy tank combat and alot more suitable crossings.
@@ponycentaur1456 that the asian bridges of that time, they made with wood or poor concrete. That ehy they cant handle tanks, im surprised that the T34 reached the Pershings without problems, i think he is less weight though..
@@AFT_05G POORLY in Korea. The lack of good bridges and roads, and the hilly terrain largely negated the armor/firepower advantages of the German "big cats". Mobility, especially the ability to traverse hilly terrain, is what counted the most, and the Sherman had that above even the Soviet-made T-34/85. Using HVAP, the Shermans M1 76 mm gun also out-ranged the D5T 85mm gun on the T-34, and was more accurate. However, it was leadership, training, doctrine, logistics, and close air support that accounted for the reason(s) why, in the August-September 1950 battles along the Naktong river in SE Korea, why the Shermans creamed the DPRK armor.
Like other commenters I have seen a huge improvement over the years. For me the bigger things are the researcher or research team finding the stories to share with all of us; the animator or animation team for bringing theses stories to life, and any other roles I didn’t mention. Thank you.
first video i ever saw on this channel was the medics inside of a church, it's so nice to see how the channel's evolved, both animation wise and storytelling. Keep it going!
The production value just keeps getting better and better. The videos from a few years back have their own distinctive style and charm, but the recent ones are History Channel (back when they were actually a history channel) worthy.
Which is crazy, since in scale it was MASSIVE compared to most other wars of the last 100 years. The whole British Commonwealth, US, half of Europe, and even Colombia and Ethiopia were backing South Korea, while China and the Soviet mercenaries were backing the North. I sometimes refer to it as "World War 2.5", because of just how influential, wide-ranging and huge in sheer size it was. For America, it was actually the 5th-deadliest war we've ever fought (behind the Civil War, the two World Wars, and Vietnam).
Thank you for the great video! 좋은 영상 감사합니다! Many countries are truly grateful for participating in the Korean War. 많은 국가들이 한국전쟁에 참전한 것에 진심으로 큰 고마움을 느끼고 있습니다. I hope people remember this war and I look forward to good videos in the future :) 사람들이 이 전쟁을 기억해주기를 바라며 앞으로도 좋은 영상 기대하겠습니다:) 감사합니다!!

Wow, the animations are getting better and better and more realistic looking. I remember a year or two ago thinking the animation of the people looked funny, but now they look great. The Pershing's was so powerful it over penetrates the armor ironically making it ineffective at killing the enemy in one hit. Though that T-34-85 is already combat ineffective from that first hit because the shell that over penetrated had likely turned the turret crew into minced meat.
I mean it wasn’t really that powerful.Pershing’s gun when firing standard APBC rounds had very similar performance to 88mm mounted on Tiger I.Though it had much stronger tungsten cored rounds high velocity rounds than Tiger I such as T33 and HVAP,but they were rather rare in quantity. But either way it was indeed a bit overkill for T-34s armor.
@@AFT_05G the gun not being good due to lack of pen assumes that they dont have pleanty of ap to use. Its like thinking m1 garands in ww2 arent as powerfull as they were because they dont penetrate as much when firing standard ball which forgets that almost everyone had ap and were firing ap so theres no reason to expect them not to be firing ap cause ap was everywhere. Its also is easy to forget that the 75mm sherman had a better gun than the 76mm and the tiger because it makes alot of shrapnel which is the point because your fighting infantry not tanks. It is also easy to forget that those ordnance bureau like to under powder rounds so the barrels lasts longer. Bad comparisons happen all the time with American stuff. Its the whole Iowa has huge advantages over Yamato but everyone forgot what they were including the people who crewed her.
it is actually estimated that the first T34 lost ist entire crew to death and injury with that first shot. the driver simply stiffened up on the controls so it kept moving. the same probably happaned to the second T34 as well, but due to the HE bombardment it is harder to tell as the crew inside was littered in shrapnel and burns.

One of your best animations so far, a minor issue I have is with Pusan being portrayed as somewhat of a barren landscape, even though it's usually very green.
Well to be fair the landscape probably had no shortage of bombs and other explosions at the time. It can take anywhere from a couple years to a couple decades for the fauna and flora to come back after a fierce battle/war
From the duel at Cologne to the battlefields of Korea. The M26 Pershing is America's answer to combating legendary enemy tanks, whether they be German or Soviet.
comparing the Pershing of 1945 with the T-34 of 1943 is of course strong, but something tells me that the fight would be more honest if instead of the T-34 there was an Is-3, which, like the Pershing, was also created in 45. no, I understand that this is not a competition who is cooler, but be proud that a tank of 1945 defeated a tank of 1943, well, that’s it ...
@@gibbon8827 You mean IS-2 mod 1944, not IS-3. If we're being serious, NorKs actually had IS-2, if you really want to dick ride the heavy classification. Not that would mean that much when you pick apart the reality of glaring Soviet foibles. IS-3 was effectively Armata vaporware until the IS-3M. M26 was re-designated as a medium tank by the time of Korea. Pershing is 4th quarter 1944 mass production after over a year of preproduction fucking around by the bureau. -T-34-85 (BR-365): 119mm at 100m, 115mm at 300m, 111mm at 500m, 102mm at 1000m, 93mm at 1500m, 85mm at 2000m, 76mm at 2500m, 70mm at 3000m
There are also other factors like the Pershing being considerably less cramped than the T-34-85, having actually pretty good sights for it's time (unlike the T-34-85), being an exceedingly stable platform due to it's design and weight, having decent commander's sights (again, for the time), etc.
Why dont you compare a Renault FT to a Tiger I?
The T-34-85 APCR(BR-365P) has a penetration of 187mm at 100m

Wow, the tanks are looking AWESOME. The extra day of waiting was worth it!
Thanks 👍
I love how the gun is so effective that it's ineffective at first
It wasn't really "ineffective" the HVAP round probably traveled through the turret and killed everyone in it, with the driver probably unaware of what happened
@@YukarisGearReviews What you said. None of the NK crewmembers were really that smart. Probably didnt even know they were hit, and if they thought they were hit, probably thought the round did no damage.
@@owo1744 it isn't that they weren't smart. its that they were inexperienced
@YukarisGearReviews it probably went all the way through without killing anything
It’s been great to watch this channel evolve from 2d to full on cinematically keep it up guys ❤
*Wow. I've gotten a heart from Yarnhub. I feel accomplished.*
This is beyond mind blowing production quality in comparison to the already amazing production quality i've watched from at least two years before!

Long time viewer abroved.
fun fact: alot of crews preferred the upgunned sherman over the pershing due to the reliability, and (for some) familiarity of it due to the previous war. In addition, alot of bridges were too weak for pershings, so many had to keep using SHerman tanks until better ones were constructed for the heavy beast.
If even Pershing was too heavy for bridges at barely 42 metric tons i wonder how would Tigers and Panthers would’ve fared..
@@selfdoYeah Sherman’s were amazing tanks. I definitely prefer them over the T-34

The production value just keeps getting better and better. The videos from a few years back have their own distinctive style and charm, but the recent ones are History Channel (back when they were actually a history channel) worthy.
The Korean war is one of the most overlooked conflicts of the 20th century
🙏🏼🇰🇷🇺🇸👍🙇♂️🙆
A lot of people don't even know it exists
Which is crazy, since in scale it was MASSIVE compared to most other wars of the last 100 years. The whole British Commonwealth, US, half of Europe, and even Colombia and Ethiopia were backing South Korea, while China and the Soviet mercenaries were backing the North. I sometimes refer to it as "World War 2.5", because of just how influential, wide-ranging and huge in sheer size it was. For America, it was actually the 5th-deadliest war we've ever fought (behind the Civil War, the two World Wars, and Vietnam).

@@gabriels5105 are you for real ? The 75mm gun was shorter and quite inferior to the long 76mm Sherman gun. Even against infantry, 76mm HE > 75mm HE.
I guess they geared up the Pershings to kill King Tigers so much that it ended up as overkill for T-34s
it is actually estimated that the first T34 lost ist entire crew to death and injury with that first shot. the driver simply stiffened up on the controls so it kept moving. the same probably happaned to the second T34 as well, but due to the HE bombardment it is harder to tell as the crew inside was littered in shrapnel and burns.

From the duel at Cologne to the battlefields of Korea. The M26 Pershing is America's answer to combating legendary enemy tanks, whether they be German or Soviet.
The Pershing was evolved into the M47 during the Korean War, but glitches kept M47s from the conflict.
comparing the Pershing of 1945 with the T-34 of 1943 is of course strong, but something tells me that the fight would be more honest if instead of the T-34 there was an Is-3, which, like the Pershing, was also created in 45. no, I understand that this is not a competition who is cooler, but be proud that a tank of 1945 defeated a tank of 1943, well, that’s it ...
T-34-85 S-53 mass production that the iconic T-34-85 parade diaspora really descends from is 1944. If we include test batches, M26 precursors are also found in 1943.
