  • ARE YOUNG ANGLERS BETTER THAN OLDER ANGLERS? MATCH FISHING DISCUSSION
With so many younger anglers catching loads of fish we wonder if there's an 'ideal age' to be a match angler.

I’m 62 been fishing club matches 2 years after not fishing for 40 years. Through RUclips channels from the top matchmen I’ve consistently been in the top 7 of my club and had 3 seconds, 2 third positions this year … hopefully I’ll get my first win next year … keep the tips coming guys 👍

Ditto! Won my first open in my first year at 61, commercial fishing. RUclips helps massively and out to prove that old guns new to the scene can compete.

I am in Spain, I am 68, and can still hold my own with younger anglers, many of which are Internationals and Provincial champions, however, my local venue ( totally natural, no stocking or management ) has seen an increase in the number of fish present, and so the weights have increased drastically- I had no problem winning sections and matches with 40 kg on the pole, but now needing 90 kg to win is too much for me, i prefer the winter matches where you can still win with less than 20 kg.

I am 55, been doing it just over a year, literally I am obsessed at moment 😂, I have exact problem about sat nav, but absolutely love it, never to old to learn, and not scared to go against the young men and women, just for the learning curve, great vid by the way

Bob Nudd said in his opinion you're in your fishing prime between 35 and 50 because you have the experience and your health is usually pretty good. And your eye sight is still ok

Based solely on my v own small experiences the age of anglers on natural venues tend to be the older generation who are still smashing it up. Great debate lads 👍👍

I remember the legendary Ivan Marks saying to me that Rob Wootton (and Andy Findlay) were absolutely brilliant angler's.
High praise indeed from arguably England's most respected and charismatic match anglers ever!

You both make a lot of good points about the differences between young and middle aged to older anglers.. But I'm willing to bet that Kristian Jones or Matty Dawes wouldn't have the first clue how to smash 20lb of Roach down the cut or How to clean Blood-worm and Joker for a winter league match or how to navigate a swim with 2 inches of ice on it. I think older anglers are brought up or into angling by having to learn several disciplines from nothing but notes or memories, experience.. Nowadays they can just watch RUclips and learn in hours what took years to learn in the 70's/80's/90's. The Angling Times and the Angler's Mail and a few John Wilson videos... Older anglers had to fill in the gaps themselves.

The youngsters have such an advantage now compared to before, the amount of information available to them from everywhere is unbelievable. I think they definitely mature earlier in terms of fishing a lot earlier due to drive, motivation, info available......so you will see a lot more younger anglers showing greater presence going forward, plus they see the prize money now.
Certain styles of fishing will still have an advantage and allow the older folk to be competitive such as your more natural venues, but your commercial work (mainly around carp) will see that age come down because there is so much effort required for the top matches.

Just getting the amount of tackle needed for today's match fishing to your peg, is easier for the younger amglers.
It takes me half an hour, just to get my breath back, when arriving at my peg. So yes, its a young mans game.

I think age will only affect the anglers that compete in matches where 500lb+ of carp is required or 50lb bags of silvers, basically matches that involve speed, efficiency, stamina and 100% focus to gain an edge. There's always natural venues to, where awkward access to the water becomes an issue.

Money is the biggest issue swinging a 5 grand pole is easier than swinging a 1 grand pole driving the length and breadth of the country or affording to another location one lives and everyone who sits on these great vids has backers

I gave up fishing for quite a few years and lost interest. I’m now 33 and got back into fishing at 31. I’d say I’m in the best form I’ve ever been in because of the knowledge I’ve gained.
I’d say when you’re bagging over 200lb+ it becomes a lot more physical.
There’s a lot of decent young commercial anglers but if we’re talking feeder fishing I don’t think there’s an age difference.

Quickly - the "Crumpet Barrier" has been the downfall of many.
But here's my look at life as an angler by age group -
Age 20-25 = going as much as you can, perhaps specialising at 2 /3 commercials, gaining knowledge, maybe winning a few (or in KJ's case a LOT). Fishing up to 5 days a week regularly 3 days.
Age 25-30 = settling down with the 2nd love of your life, marriage, a couple of ankle-biters, and finances are a bit tighter - mortgage, etc. Perhaps getting one or two days a week fishing.
Age 30-40 = life more settled (unless divorced), but still fishing once / twice a week. Starting to get beaten by those in 20-25 age group. Move away from commercials onto natural venues.
Age 40-45 - can count on experience from early commercial venues and more recent natural venues and can still dish it out once or twice a year, on 2-3 days a week fishing.
Age 45-55 - the best years, because you have the experience / knowledge / ability of over 25 years fishing and learning, and can deal with natural and commercial venues. Still at 2-3 days per week.
Age 55-65 - thinking about slowing down (unless you're nickname is "5X"), and staying local again, and only going when the bones don't creak or its dry when you open the curtains. Once or twice a week.
Age 65+ - 40+ years of experience, now teaching (potential) grand-kids to fish once a week, and getting out on your own once a week while missus has the girls round for their monthly book club coffee and natter.
All done while navigating marriages / job changes / house moves / bringing up kids / work-life balancing act, etc.

Water craft comes with age in my opinion and as you get older you adapt your fishing .But pole fishing long pole with a bucket of pellets slapping jigger is for the younger Lads .🎣🐟

I think you become experienced and dedicated in the discipline you first take too as a beginner. I’m 70 now and I get smashed up every week in the summer by younger anglers where pole fishing for carp is concerned. But in the winter when my waggler experience comes into play then roles are reversed. I can’t adapt to fishing the pole and likewise the young lads in my club refuse to fish or learn the waggler even when they’re getting their butts kicked in the winter. So I think it’s a generation thing myself. Fish an open on the Avon at Evesham and 95% of anglers will be mature anglers. That’s because that was the only type of fishing they did in their early years before commercials came onto the scene.

you can keep them commercial venues... i dont wanna haul out 90+ lb o carp from a muddy puddle every week... same as i dont wanna thrash 30lb of bleak out on a whip....
the older 35+ years matchman has more patience..ive definitely got more as im older.. i used to try win a match in the first hour trying all my set up's etc... but now... i work at it with patience.. i do prefer a traditional venue tho or a mixed fishery.. .. ..that John Arthur is good.. he works his arse off for the full 5 hours... and reapsthe results.. but i dont have that much commitment... it is after allour hobby/day out as well...

I don't think you can beat youth, and I've noticed the younger anglers are definitely better now than when I was younger........
I, too, am 55, and concentration along with physicality definitely declines.
I still think every old dog has its day, though, and I feel as if I'm as hungry as I was 40 years ago. And occasionally win something 🎉
