Like your advice in this video. I am neither a pro golfer or fitter, but even I don't like the idea of setting all of my iron lie angles the same the 7 iron. To me, that implies a poor or lazy fitter. 😊
Very interesting. I actually put a vertical line on ball with dry marker which imprints on the face, i find this very helpful, more from a health check on swing tbh.
It’s my understanding that lie angles of clubs like pw and sw makes the most impact. If you’re off 2* upright or flat for you pw you’re going to miss a lot more to the left or right of your intended target.
Hi Trottie, will a muscleback balde (P7TW/P7MB) from a head design perspective spin more or less in the short irons than a head with some tech like tungsten weights (P7CB)? If lofts are bent equal
How come some use a sharpie and draw a vertical line on the ball and whatever the print is left on the club face after impact will show if you’re flat, upright or standard? Which one is better the lie board or the sharpie on the ball?
A lot of players do this with woods, it's pretty awesome. I like the lie board, I like the sharpie, I also like the launch monitor and I like looking at divots. I like all the info and then a conversation with the player and ideally coach about preferences and future targets. Then I'll look at Data too if given the chance. Good call on the face sharpie though and providing that ball is set up perfectly it's a good tool
Trottie, I got 2021 p790’s 1 degree flat, I still feel like I am hitting them more right then normal… I am a left handed players. I’m also hitting my 7,8,9 and pw off the toe. Would that be more length or lie angle to upright?
I'd move them .5* flatter in the shorts, 1* flatter in the longs and then I'd work with a hanger to check that downswing plane. Steep usually means Toe bangers
This is totally the reason why i pull a lot left but havent got the means to fix it. so aim slightly more right and then when i dont pull left im fooked.

Hi trottie, I’m a decent golfer but my iron play is probably the worst part of my game. I’m 6ft 2 so my irons are a little upright, would you ever suggest going flatter in order to improve your swing in the long run? For example if the clubs are too upright people will raise their hands so the club comes into contact with the turf level. If I were to go flatter, even though the toe would probably dig for me at first, would I then react to this by lowering my hands to accommodate for the flatter lie and therefore stop the early extension? I’d love to swing it like Tommy and I know his are quite flat 😂
Stop trying to copy your lie angles off of professional golfers, they have perfect swings that are repeatable every time. If your irons are worst part of your game it sounds like you would do a lot better by taking lessons rather then changing your lie angles. You would be better off going standard lie angle and fixing your swing then change your lie angles and your swing evolve into something else.
@loucunny17 figured actually getting a reply would be better then a fake one from trotties media team. I definitely wouldn't take any advice from a scratch golfer.....
Tour truck flash back....do most players adjust each lie angle different thru the entire iron set? I went 2 degrees flat thru my entire set of P770-P790.
Good content but modern clubs are not so easy to bend , as most have a face insert, blades or muscle cavity clubs sre the way to go and can be bent easily
Good work Trott..IMO, I think you may have finally hit the nail on the head @ 8:18. You're now moving the club out in front of you in the downswing. Makes you wonder why so many people try to shallow a short iron when they are attempting to get 'zero' path with -4 AoA.

Bro you’re way too smart of a guy to believe in lie boards. Turf interaction happens 1-4ish inches past the ball. That dynamic lie angle can be vastly different than your dynamic lie angle exactly at impact. Just use the ball flight. If it’s a pull draw, flatten it a few degrees. If that doesn’t change it, go flatter. If you can’t get a guy to stop the left miss with lie angle, then focus on other components of the club… Shaft flex, length and weight. Grip size and weight. Weight in the toe of the club… Lie boards are crap.
Impact is 1-4ish inches past the ball…. Maybe in The Matrix, if Elon Musk recalibrates physics/gravity for a day, or if you pound a bottle of ambien with Eldrick, bro. Place the crack pipe on the ground and step back, slowly.

never any nonsense.... not my bag 😎

Yes more loft and the face loft will aim left or right if the lie angle is way off. Even if the face is aiming straight

how many degrees did you flatten your irons to correct your recent left miss? Thx Chris!
1* on average
Could you also measure or verify your appropriate lie angles with Trackman data?
You certainly use that to help you yes. Obv not everyone has access to the TrackMan and you can go more basic than a lie board and use a rubber mat

Is it necessary to have 0.5 degree of lie angle between each club? Great content!
yea because they get progressively shorter as you go down the bag
My elbows hurt 😂
Fit a club to a swing that works, don’t use an upright fitting to fix a swing flaw
But of it’s a flaw, the swing does work. Right?
I certainly like that approach providing the player understands the task
at what point would you decide it's you and not the clubs lie angle?
🤣 NEVER
