I bought simple and reliable , i didnt want a dirtbike with streetbike comforts .maybe some folks need hydro clutches and counterbalancing, electric start ect. Ill take carbureted cable clutch premix kickstart bikes over all others!
I own a “ Dinosaur “ 1999 WR-400F Yamaha . Probably the best bike I’ve ever owned . I’m 63 now & bought it used from The guy who bought it from the founder of Baja Designs , so it has all the goodies to make it street legal in California. I’ve had it almost 20 years now , and having started out on a 60 cc Yamaha mini -enduro in 1973 , then graduating to a ‘77 RD-400 ( still own it ) , then an ‘81 YZ125 water cooler , then an ‘85 Tri-Z250 Three wheeler ( also still own ) I think I gradually worked my way up to what I’m riding now . While almost 24 years old now , the old WR still does just as well out riding with my buddies who own newer bikes , and I don’t have to worry about payments and land closure issues because of registration tag issues as noted in your video here. Because I’m street licensed and registered I’m good to ride any Damn place my mind & body & bike can take me pretty much year -round . Just some food for thought & my own 2 cents here. Enjoy whatever you ride no matter what & ride like you love it . 😊😉👍

The ideal bike(s) for trail riding also depends on what kind of trails, and where. It's not all-encompassing. And a 450 is definitely a great trail bike in places like Nevada.

Yep that’s a killer bike me and my son have the 450rx and the 250rx 2023. Great pair for the open trails we do, that 450 is a beast down low a little too much most times. But always walk away with a smile

Picked up a 2023 KLXRF 140 & a 2023 TTRE 110. Amazingly fun bikes. I do not do motocross so this is perfect!!
If you get into aggressive trails, and you gain skill, you will push those great starter bikes to their limit. But just one more step up, like a KDX200 (or what ever the size is today), can be very good for whooped out trails. I rode with 2 guys in the 80's with the older KDX200's, and they were hauling the mail really good on those bikes.
One of the guys was really cocky,--and I wish I would have ridden with him more. :)

CR500 is the beginner bike, period.
Great call on the larger displacement dual sports. The extra jam is so important for passing on hilly roads getting to the riding destination. Would love to see manufacturers make a de-tuned 550-600+CC truly lightweight dual sport. It would also be nice if we didn't have to buy a new tank and seat on day one.

Have a old 93 kdx 250 does great.... just picked-up a old 82 Suzuki PE $150 runs... I'm going to let my kid ride that... But the PE needs to be in the pipe way more than the kdx
For my supermini son we were looking at brand new 2023 125sx from the dealership for $6500 & then I found a 2023 250Sxf with 40hrs for $7k.. as much as I wish I could afford both, or the 125 for a year, I couldn't pass up on the 250.... My my 13yo son is lugging around a 250lb bike..

Just bought a 23 husqvarna tx300.
In my opinion the best beginner bike for an adult would be either a crf230f, or ttr230. The best used bikes you could buy as an experienced rider are in my opinion 04+ rm250, 05 - 08 crf450r, 06 - 08 wr450f, 05 - 15 crf450x, 02 - 07 cr250. Keep in mind what your planning to do with it aswell, be practical. If your riding nothing but track, it would be better to go with a mx bike, if your doing nothing but woods riding it would be better to buy a wr, or crf-x model. Obviously a motocross bike could be ridden in the woods and a woods bike could be ridden on a track. But could be ridden in the woods, but it makes more sense to buy a bike that's purpose built for what kind of riding you do. The mx bikes are a handful in the woods, the 450s get super hot unless your moving fairly quick, and the power is just too abrupt to be adequate for most trails. The woods bikes arent really suspended for the track if you hit any sizable jump your going to bottom the suspension every time. Plus theyre usually heavier than most mx bikes and slower aswell. The best do it all bike I would say is the ktm300xc, 350xc or 450xc. No matter what bike you go with proper maintenance and safety is key. If you take care of any machine it will take care of you for the long run
I got off the track in the early 90's, (or a bit later), took a few years off and bought a left over 1996 RMX250 for trail riding. It was great in the slow tight stuff, but I prefer my modified MX bikes in those trails. Plus, I like modifying my bike. I am making my own bark buster mounts right now, (I have a small machine shop). I don't like what is available for pro taper bars. The KTM's were the woods bike of choice in Michigan back in those days. They were much more "Moto like" than the RMX. If you took that RMX on the track, it was like riding a bike that was having a grand-mal epileptic seizure. :)
IMO, I am not so sure riding a dirt bike is a good thing for an adult to start to do. I am 59 and rode since I was 10, and I don't think I could take the sport up for very long as an adult. I bounced off the ground a lot better, learning how to ride, when I was a kid. I also had less responsibility as a kid and could take time off to heal. I am riding again,--but man, I don't think I would even think about it if I had not gained the skills when younger.
@EarthSurferUSA I'm from north western PA and have always had mx bikes that I've ridden in the woods. I swore by my 06 rm250 rc edition. Skid plate and cycra pro bends and it went almost anywhere. When I took almost all the slack off the powervalve it would get on the pipe right off idle and had bottom end for days.. I could also turn it up to 1 ¾ turns from all the way in and it had great top end hit. That bike was awesome. I myself like my Hondas too. But plan on buying a 24 ktm300xc to retire my 06 cr250 and do a frame up resto mod.. you can't go wrong with any bike but some work better then others for specific things
Whats often unstated is that a motocross bike is a race bike and is not designed for longevity. As a casual fun bike a 250f mxer is just not suitable. It just doesnt last well. My son and I both bought new 250fs mx bikes thinking they would suit us. Two different brands, and in no time they needed top end and valve replacements. One bike needed clutch as well. So for us, it was back to two stroke, cheaper to live with.

If Yamaha made a 350, they would out sell every other manufacturer and Bike size! I want a yz 4 stroke but am forced into a KTM, because I want the 350, 250f just doesn’t have enough low end grunt
There are a lot of forced advancements that I don't care for today, and actually hate, (like the 4-stroke bike in general). But I don't see anything wrong with a hydraulic clutch.
But my YZ cable clutch is very good also, easy 2 finger pull all day, and great modulation, (feel of engagement). So if it raises the price, it is not worth it to me.
I just want to ride. I honestly think I would be just as happy with a 1979 YZ250,------------------------------almost. :)

Can you comment on newer bikes not being able to ride trails in the forest? In California anyway
The race or performance bikes aren’t allowed on trails. Therefore, you can’t register them to get a registration and tags. Basically, they band all 4 strokes and 2 strokes that people would actually want to buy.
I would argue a majority of people buying dirt bikes are using them for trails and exploration and off-roading.
Everyone I know with a dirt bike rides them to stunt, ride trails, or just have fun off road.
Very people I know actually race or hit the track.
I wish manufacturers would kinda focus on trail bikes (Yamaha). Imagine a hybrid YZ250. 2 stroke power to the rear. Electric power to the front. Regenerative braking to feel like engine braking if you want. Or let it coast. Headlights. Electric start. Like, cmon Yamaha.

I'm looking to get back into motocross at age 59 now, after not riding for 40 years off road.( I do own an 18' Triumph Street Triple R, so I do still have riding skills. I also ride mtn. bikes hard, so I'm good off-road handling wise.) My issue is my inseam is only 30" and I am 5'8-5'9" tall. What options do I have as most motocross bikes(I'm thinking a 250 4 stroke) have a seat height of about 37+ inches. I did own two DRZ-400's with a seat height of 36.8" and was always tippy toed on those bikes. How did small guys like Ricky Carmichael (5'6" tall) do it? Any particular brands with lower seat heights or that are lowering link compatible? Love the channel!

Only put one foot down at a time. I’m 5’9” tall with a 30”inseam and own several late model motocross bikes with no issues concerning height on the track. In motocross, you rarely put both feet on the ground at the same time. Get out and ride.

@@mdgeroy I also know from having my DRZ's that the suspension will settle down along with the saddle over time. I'm hoping those factors and the height gained from wearing motocross boots too will even the playing field.

Klx 140 big wheel is actually a very underrated trail bike. Upgrade the carb and that bike is golden

Maybe the new bike prices are the reason shy you can't afford a bike today? Blame the 1986 production rule and the EPA dictatorship for forcing the very expensive 4-stroke on the industry. I was buying bran new bikes starting at the age of 12 in 1976 making $1.00/hr part time at my Dad;'s little highway rural store in Michigan.
No, I never got fast enough to race pro, but the bi8kes spurred me into manufacturing and engineering, and after all those shops and 3 college degrees, I was still just above poverty,---until I started a business porting little 2-stroke engines. I have no idea what I would be doing today, if I could not afford my own dirt bikes like kids used to be able to do. It is not just about racing. We lost all the opportunity that goes with it too.
Just my $0.02. Every KTM I’ve come across has had a failed starter/battery/ground.
People have asked to trade KTMs for my YZ. No thx. My bike works every time.

Don't you love the 4-stroke guys who "roll the throttle" on for a corner exit on a 125cc 2-stroke.
We clearly forgot how to ride a 125,--or never knew.
Listen up: A gear higher going into the corner, clutch in, pin the throttle, feed out the clutch and try not to bog it. You will knock many seconds off your lazy lap times. :)

Depending on your skill and size that’s a fine bike, if you’re a beginner probably wouldn’t be my first choice.

Who uses a warranty? Hmm, I guess you want one for a 4 stroke. :) Since 1978, I don't think I ever had a warranty for a MX bike. 2-strokes were sold "as-is" for decades, and I have never wished I had a warranty for a MX bike.

Hi guys I'm 6ft 240 lb athletic build. I'm a novice vet rider 37 yrs old getting back into the sport, can I still ride a 250 taking into account my weight ?

Sure. 2 or 4-stroke, both make about 45hp. You are not going to push the limits of those bikes on anything but flat ground. One thing you will have to do though, is get the right suspension springs for your weight,--or the handling will be terrible, and cause you to crash more often. I am about 225 with my riding gear on, and I had to go up two more spring rates to get the bike to act great. 18 years off a bike,--2lbs a year creeps up on you. But my stock fork springs noticed it right away. :). If you set the rear sag and use stock springs, the bike will feel like it is riding on it's front wheel way to much, (it is.), and the bike wont handle well at all, and never let you gain confidence.

Vet riders have less skill, and should not be on a 450? Some maybe. Heck, I started racing late (24), and watched the 30 plus class go slow in the mid 80's in Michigan.
By the time I hit 30 years old, the class was full of old A riders, some of them fast enough to still qualify for a pro national.
I know quite a few guys around the age of 60 today, who will show you and I the fast way around a track/trail.
Older guys may slow down and not take risks, (most of them were fast at one time in their life, or they would not still be doing it.), but don't mistake that for a lack of talent.
Out west there a tons of insanely fast mx and especially desert riders

A 450 is honestly a pretty terrible idea for most riders in my opinion. If you KNOW you need a 450, you just know.
For wide open long runs, sure. For sand, sure. For stunting, sure. But more amateur and beginner riders on a track or trails…. Just seems like a bad idea.
If you’ve never rode a bike before DONT buy a new bike. But an older bike. Don’t buy any small bikes because your gonna ride them once and want a bigger bike. If you want to start riding a 125 2 stroke or a 250f. Don’t go anything bigger and make sure you spent a good amount of money on a helmet and boots, nothing else matters.
Those are racing bikes. You don't start off on a racing bike. It is 9 out of 10 of these that go into the classified ads within a year or two. Start with a easy bike, that does not scare you. And---it is much better to start off as a kid to learn, because a kid bounces off the ground better. I know several people who tried dirt biking as an adult, and none of them did it for 2 years.
Ride a ktm/husky 300 n you prolly won’t go back for trails.
I will never buy a new bike again. They are all too tall today, (I am 5'9"), and now too expensive. I spent a lot of time and money getting my 2019 YZ250 2-stroke perfect, and if I ever by a new one,---it will be for parts. The plastic is also ugly. It looks like some 40 year old art school graduate, who still has Batman posters all over his bedroom walls, designed the abstract art plastic. Too tall, too expensive, and too ugly. Not interested at all.
Oh, by the way, my YZ corners better than any full sized MX bike sold today, since there has not been a "rational" bike made for decades now.
