I would just like an all rounder to be able to go on trails maybe hit a track on it also but have no idea were to start. I do like the sound of a 2 stroke though
@@Jayjay8812m So the cross country models are in my opinion the best do it all bikes. My personal favorite is the KTM 250XC as I feel like I can ride it anywhere. I also am a big fan of the YZ250FX or KTM250XCF - ruclips.net/video/rkQW7sJOvFQ/видео.htmlsi=8z6MahK50-8sEAgE
67 years old, did motocross in the mid 70’s Yamaha. Roadraced in the 80’s RZYamaha, now I trail ride a 150te Husky and I love it. Fuel injected always run great, electric start, wow is that nice we you stall it on a hill. I’ve always preferred to ring the neck of a smaller engine than be afraid of a CR500, you could loop that thing at any speed!
You do realize the throttle goes both ways, right? I’m 71, 120 lbs, with a 27” inseam. I think the cr500 is an exceptionally easy bike to ride, and man oh man does it open up when you want to haul the mail.
@gungadingo just curious, do your feet sit flat or are you just on your toes straddling the seat?? Maybe im figuring this wrong but your around 5'9 give or take... The reason I say this is I personally don't like a high seat ( feel like I have less control ) As I've gotten older (54) but with that being said, I still want it 2 rip... I'm think about a gas gas 125 ... these bikes seem to run strong with a lower seat height.
The older (and bigger) I get, the smaller the bike I want. And I’ve been riding for 47 years. As the saying goes, it’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow….
I ended up with a yz250x. It’s in that category of do it all, but man can you tell it wants to go fast. Def gotta take my time and ease into it. Def not a beginner beginner bike, I kinda consider myself on the high end of beginner. I was hoping to do trail, single track, and one day hare scrambles. Def don’t like premix and jetting but I like the idea of reliability, cost, and growing with the bike.
The YZ250X is one of my top 5 favorite bikes! Yes I would say it’s not really a beginner bike but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn on it and have a blast! What year is your YZ?
The GYTR flywheel is one of the best mods I ever did to my 250X. Smooths out the bike and makes it way harder to stall. I'd recommend sticking with the stock carb if you can because they're easy to tune and you can get away with doing jets without taking the carb off of the bike, if you want to get something that you set and forget get a smart carb. A gear down in the front sprocket might be good too if you ride the slow slow stuff.
Switching from 4t to a 2t is also a challenge with lack of engine braking. I see what all the videos mean about you have to get more skilled in the braking dept to ride one - but the lack of jerkiness on trails is wonderful for flat stuff
At 47 and not riding at all in 25 years. A good mate talked me into a 300 2t for our local single track. I got a 2017 beta 300rr. What an awesome beginner bike. Such good low end power. You can chug and lug around and the angine never quits. 5 years on and now ride about 10 litres of fuel a week.
Good bike. Was on yz250f mx bikes since like 2001 or something. Got a gas gas 300 and was the best Enduro bike I've ever owned. My mate who's been riding almost as long as me said it was the best engine he ever rode. I would love another 300 2t but I'll probably get a wr450 as they are so good now and want to be able to ride on the road and use it as a smaller adventure bike
@@scottgoddard3497 I recently purchased a swm re500 for lightweight adventure ridind and love having the choice of 2t and 4t. Both bikes are awesome but so different.
@gasnxt6805 I have a 2023 klr adventure bike. It's cool. I like it, huge for the hp but that doesn't bother me as much. Good for multi day adventure rides but I want something for day missions off road as alot of the guys in this new town I've moved too have like tenere 700 or like dr250 etc. So... I'm thinking it be cool to have an Enduro bike again that's road legal. In NZ they have to have abs which I hate off road but do provide safer road riding for less experienced riders I'd assume. This 500 you speak of? I've never heard of it. I'll check it out
My first bike was a Honda XR200. Good bike, exceot the kickstart gear would strip about once per year. Then a KDX200, which i wish i still had, that bike was light, powerful & could do anything! This was the 1980's. Now I ride a KTM 350 EXC-F which is a street legal dirt bike & is awesome.
@@basilistitieh5862 I have a EXC-F also, and agree, not a beginner bike, but something to aspire to. I had an early 2000's KLX300R. For an adult, I think it's the perfect beginner bike. It is VERY good on trails. Indestructible, pretty light, and super easy to handle. Plus, and I think this is important, it rewards good technique in a way that a "backyard bike" like a TTR230 does not. I mean, as YOU get better, the bike responds better, and you have more fun. You might say it has more "headroom". Add barkbusters and go for it. One other tidbit from me: gearing. It's easy to swap sprockets of course, but the KLX had quite low gearing. This is very confidence inspiring on trails and hills. It makes it easy to modulate traction and avoid spinning the rear. Oh, one more thing to begin: learn to modulate the clutch on hills. A dirt bike clutch can be slipped continuously. It's not like a car. Traction is controlled with the clutch more than the throttle. Once you wrap your brain around that, and practice the heck out of it, your riding will take a big step up.
I bought my 1st dirt bike about 4 years ago in my early 40s. I got a 1994 yz80 and installed a 2.3 gallon Acerbis axillary tank that attaches to the front forks since I mostly trail ride it.
I wish this video (or the internet in general. Lol) would’ve been available when I started riding. I wasted so much money, did so much needless maintenance, got hurt way too many times, all for a over priced, stiff suspended, finicky, no warrantee, no creature comforts race bike OR race snowmobile, because I had to have the ‘cool race version’. I look back and it’s dang near devastating to me that I wasted my whole life doing my favorite thing, riding, on equipment that wasn’t the right choice when I had a choice. Newbies, listen to this guy, I wish I would’ve been better informed and more open minded. Funny how you know everything at 16, then grow old and realize you knew absolutely nothing. Great video.
Thank You. I wish I had someone as well to help me when I first started. I have spent years and years trying to unlearn all the bad riding habits I developed. I spent my fair share of time on bikes that were too much power for me to handle even though I did not want to admit it. I rode with Shane Watts a few times and he had a TTR230 and none of us on our fancy expensive big bore bikes could keep up with him....
Yup, same here by now a vet A rider and a great friend. I got my azz handed to me when I met him, became great friends and I’ve learned a LOT from him. I still stink, but not as bad, lol.
Sam the only thing I would add is some events require a license plate and a headlight and taillight. The Betas and KTM enduro bikes are a little more ready to go in that regard as they are factory equipped. Im 58 yrs old and run a Beta X trainer and love it. I ride dual sports and enduros.Bikes such as the CRF 250 F will have to be equipped with those items after purchase if needed, but can be done…
My need is for hunting. Riding forestry roads, slashes, decommissioned roads, deer trails. Just getting out farther quite as possible. I am 5'10'' no experience rider. I would like to have road legal if possible. Thank you for your response. Great Chanel.
There are a few options depending on how much you want to spend and also how much time you plan on doing technical single track riding. For mostly road riding with a little bit of single track you can get away with a dual sport like the yamaha XT250, Honda CRF300L, or Kawasaki KLX 300. If you want to do more tight single track then Beta 350 RS might be a better bike.
I went with a KTM 450 XC-W for my first, and it was excellent. I mostly ride trails, and it has good suspension, and lots of torque for climbing hills. You just need to take it easy as you learn, but I’m sure you need to use throttle discretion on a 250 as well.
Thanks for sharing. The 450xcw is a great bike and actually not a bad bike to learn on when compared to other 450 bikes, they just have lots of power so your right …take easy on that throttle
I started on a 450 and regret it. I switched to a 250 about a year after that and I was way better and more in control of the bike. While you can survive a 450 as a first bike, I think a smaller bike is easier for most beginners.
I’m just starting out my bike journey and I appreciate your video so much. I’ve also subscribed because I don’t know how you’re not huge yet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
Laid a 450 down in a motel parking lot. Never had been a bike in my life. Immediately released the clutch whiskey throttle dragged me about 40 yards luckily didnt die
Got a 2024 KTM xc-f 250. Great bike. My last one was a little crf50 way back 15 years ago. The power is incredible, and definitely took some time to perfect getting into 1st smoothly. So happy to be riding again - great video!
I grew up riding dirt bikes in the golden era of the late 60's and early/mid 70's...I started on a store bought 3 hp mini bike then a Vespa 150 scooter that believe it or not I learned a lot about going fast in the woods with it and those small tires and also became very skilled at pulling wheelies with it. Then to a Bonanza mini cycle with a hodaka 100cc motorcycle engine a with 5 speed transmission that was basically a mini bike with suspension...it would pull wheelies at 50 mph with a top speed of 60mph. Then a Yamaha 125cc DT, then a YZ100, then a YZ 125 as a 17 year old, where I earned my first AMA Expert/Pro License. If you really have never ridden a dirt bike in anger I would recommend learning on no more than a 175cc bike, the 450's are way too dangerous but so are the 250's for a real novice.
@@dirtbikesamYes, that's exactly where I'm at! A beginner adult looking for a used dirtbike for two major reasons, one being that I can't afford to buy an expensive dirtbike, the other is that I would feel inhibited on an expensive shiny bike trying to learn. Wouldn't want to hurt the precious thing! 😅 So far my shortlist consists of klx300r, xr250r, xr400r, dr350, drz250 and tt250r. Crf250/230f has never been sold in Sweden, so no point putting those on the list. Any comments or suggestions are more than welcome at this stage 👍
@@SwedBear1 All of those options are great options. The KLX300R has a little taller suspension and a liquid-cooled 4-stroke motor. The XR bikes are probably the most reliable and are solid bikes. All the bikes you mentioned are going to be reliable bikes so to me it would just to find a used one that has low hours and that has been taken care of.

I’m 60 and just bought a RMZ450. My history is Yz250 when they were yellow. CR 500 and then KTM 550 MXC. Vstrom 1000,Tiger explorer 1200 and as of now a KTM 1190 R. But I think the Husqvarna TE350W is in my future or the TE300.
Very well done Sam. I have been riding since I was 9 years old and you gave excellent advice. Only advantage I see with the four stroke is it doesn’t gobble the gas like a 2 stroke. Weight is a big issue when you look at how a bike handles terrain.
Hey Sam. Last bike was a CRF250X, miser on fuel, decent power. But I am betting a 150 XC-W will be more nimble and better power to weight ratio as well? Thanks. Tom

My first dirt biking experience was with my neighbor when I was 13. He was 17 and idolized him. He rode his 125 and put me on his 450. He left me behind on the trails after a short time and I tried to keep up. I rode over something that caused me to flip over the handlebars, the bike landed on top of me, and something on the bike punctured through my ankle. I walked back to his truck, blood pooling in my shoe, and waited. He got back and was pissed that I left his bike on the trail. I waited for him to collect his dirt bike, load up and then we drove back home. My parents then brought me to the hospital. He never forgave me for bending that bikes frame. That day still haunts me thinking about riding a dirt bike again. Maybe one day
My 16 year old has been riding for a while and at 6'4 he outgrew his ttr125. Just picked up a wr250f. It has mods and is fast. Thinking I should reinstall the throttle stop screw until he gets comfortable.
Im 34, been riding since I was 7 but nothing crazy. Have had 2 stroke 125s and a 2 stroke 250. I have been off a bike for 4 years and picked up a rmz450. Definite difference in power delivery but I am loving it
The Beta Xtrainer is probably the best all around beginner bike for almost everything on this list minus motocross. The engine is beginner friendly out of the box but can easily be tuned for more power as you progress and figure out what discipline you would like to focus on. Pretty much same can be said for the suspension. It is more set up for trail/hard enduro out of the box but can be affordably tuned for more xc type use. A true beginner wanting to get in XC will not be fast enough to find the stock suspension lacking.
@@murddraals It has a carb that works great and is prewired for turn signals including the switch but does not have the actual lights. There are kits readily available. You will also need to add a mirror. It can be licensed depending on the state you are in.

Glad your getting into dirt biking. The KLX is taller and has better suspension but is heavier then the CRF125F. I feel like if you have riding experience then the KLX300R is going to be more fun for you then the CRF125F.
@@justinmhollis I went with the klx300r. It's been a lot of fun, but I decided to get some lowering links since I'm a bit short for it. The kiddo outgrew his klx110rl, but his next bike will be a klx140f.
My dad got me a ktm 250cc two stroke as an unconfident beginner and it was so bad I didn’t get a bike until 5 years later, now I’m looking for my third bike on this video
@@dirtbikesam Can’t really tell if my riding style is trails or hard enduro but a crf250f sounds good to me, what would you recommend? Im from Costa Rica where backroads are very steep and often pretty damaged. I want a bike that can explore every single nook and cranny of my area something unstoppable by bad conditions.
Had lots of big road bikes. Got a 250cc 2 stroke for enduro wild in low gears & unforgiving. 250excf next bike great bike fast enough, just missing the extra grunt when needed. Now on KTM 350excf good all round, took a while to get use to extra power.
I have ridden mx, hare scrambles, and gncc/woods races for over 25yrs.. I have owned and raced approx 15 different bikes of all makes, displacement, along with 2 stroke & 4 stroke, obviously as I started racing in 1992.. When I got back into racing vet/40+, I found I was struggling with too much power & weight.. Rode a friends CR125 built with good custom suspension, OMG, I fell in love again with lightweight bike that loves my style of riding.. After that ride in 2019, I found a barely used 2015 ktm 200.. and used xcw parts to turn it into the 200xcw that I always wished I could buy.. Its fucking amazing, perfect for my 215lb 6ft 1" ass to rip for hours in the woods.. I hate to admit that I prob have over $10k in the bike even after buying it used for $4800.. I'm keeping this one forever, no matter what.
My KTM 200EXC is just brilliant. Super light. Not so much punch you get freaked. I ride with guys on 450’s on trails, some I can’t keep up with, some can’t keep up with me

I have always been used to riding machines with high hp but everytime I have tried clutching and shifting I stall or mess up the takeoff everytime, I really really want to fix this and ride actual motocross and not just snowmobiles and quads, are there any dirt bikes or enduros that are a very beginner friendly and have easier methods of shifting
@@dirtbikesam yeah I would prefer to ride a manual shift bike but am wondering which brand has the best shifting/clutching overall in terms of feel and longevity

In my opinion the xtrainer is "THE" starter bike for trail single and double track and Enduro! Just when you order it run it through the suspension program get set up for your weight and terrain. Don't be concerned with the two stroke engine it will last a long time before you have to do a top end you will be ready for an upgrade by that time.

When I was 13 years old I bought me a 250 and a 125 . Both were fast and fun . I preferred the 125 for most of my riding sessions because of the lower weight . The 250 for fast days and hill climbing . Later on graduated to a 500 and maaaaaan are they powerful and fast . I would put 250 emblems on the 500 and race with my buddies . 😂 I was taller and heavier than they were and I would leave a trench with dirt and rocks flying behind me . They didn’t want to go riding anymore . 😅
Not a great beginner bike but it really good bike. Our 2018 YZ250x that we had was one of my top favorite bikes of all time. You definitely did not make a bad choice as ANY dirt bike is a good choice. Just make sure you work on clutch control and proper riding technique.
Old video but thanx for the heads up I just brought a RMZ450 and the thing is way too powerful for me as a beginner also had a big stack on it already flipped off hit my head
I currently have a klx230 dual sport and ride mostly in the desert on slower technical trails. The 230 has enough power for me, but he suspension is horrible. I am thinking about an xtrainer given I am still learning and am 5'8. Thoughts?
Too late, I already bought a used wr450f and finding out its a lot of power. It is intimidating. I was hoping to knock down the power delivery by going smaller on the rear sprocket by a couple of teeth. Any other suggestions?
What year is your WR? A great way to control any dirt bike is using the clutch to modulate the power. You can shift up to a higher gear and use the clutch to control the power. So practicing clutch control!
Make sure the throttle stop screw hAsnt been removed until you get used to the bike. It won't allow you to use all the power. Just bought one for my 16 year old. His 125 the handle bars were hitting his knees. LOL He is 6' 4
What would you recommend for someone who has ridden street for 30 years and limited hours in dirt? I'm 240lbs and will trail ride almost exclusively. The kids want dirt bikes and are 14 and 17 years old. I'd prefer a similar bike for all 3 of us just for spare part / easy to maintain. Currently riding a R1200RT and a SV1000S
So if you go with one brand of bike usually all the full size bikes levers and such are interchangeable. Most bikes these days are pretty easy to maintain but I feel like my 2 strokes take less maintenance. Also most bikes these days are pretty reliable if you’re buying them new. Used is a whole different story. It’s way cheaper to rebuild the motor on a 2 stroke vs a 4 stroke. The Air cooled trail bikes from Yamaha TTR and CRF Honda are really reliable. But they are not full size frame and suspension. Are you wanting to stick with 4 strokes or 2 strokes?
@@dirtbikesam 4 stroke, EFI, possibly liquid cooled because we will be riding in Tennessee where it could get hot and humid. I'll mainly be doing fire trail riding or doing some single track, hopping rocks or roots, etc. Not planning on doing any crazy jumps or anything. My 50 year old body is getting more fragile every year. I should also add I'll most likely have a SxS to carry gear as well.
rode every weekend when i was a kid, havent touched a bike since then (15 years) I want to get back into it. Live in the Texas hill country and just want to hit trails. 6"4, 185, what would you point me towards
Be honest about what kind of terrain you will be riding most. The 2T bikes are better the steeper it gets. The 4T bikes generally have a longer range and cruise flat ground with less effort.
After riding on road since 1986 I tried a dirt bike about 7 years ago. It was not a good fit. First it was a 450 - bad I know. Then I could not shake techniques used on the street that just do not apply in the dirt. Also there just seemed something wrong about jumps. I ride liter bikes and if both wheels come off the ground it’s generally a bad day. lol. I really still would like to ride dirt so maybe try a 250 and find an instructor.
Yeah a 250F would be a better a 450. Proper riding technique is crucial and makes riding so much better. I recommend my buddy Josh's online riding technique training course - here is the link - www.ridewiththeknights.com/a/2147488325/6yZ8wrsn
I found this video because my Beta 390RRS is too powerful for me to learn obstacles, pivot turns, and other hard enduro on. Even on the lower map I find the throttle too sensitive to learn to wheelie and pivot on. Thanks for the free advice! I think I'll look towards the KTM150 XCW to learn these skills on and hopefully be able to transfer those skills to my 390. I love my 390, but I'm really trying to focus on skills. I'd love to try out a Beta X trainer too.
50 year old beginner. 300lbs currently. Rode when I was a kid. I want to ride whatever type of trails and terrain I can find. What would be your suggestion? Thank you.
@ I wanted to add more info to my below comment. Your video is very helpful but was hoping for a little more insight because of my additional weight. I was about to buy a 2024 WR250F at a discounted price but then discovered a 2024 YZ250FX marked down even more. @@chadsmith5224 The WR250F is probably a less snappy version of the YZ250FX so I would probably start with that bike unless the deal on the YZ250FX is too good to pass up.

Hello. Can you recommend a smaller bike for a novice rider? I am looking for a 4 stroke motocross bike for my daughter. She has experience riding. She's 17, 5'2", 100pds. She prefers jumps over speed.
I'm 220lbs 6' and I basically just want to learn to wheelie and do stoppies without being crushed by a street motorcycle. Will a 125 be good enough? A bicycle can do a stoppie but I'm not sure how well wheelies would translate to a streetbike.
Hey guys, I live in Colorado and I’m looking for a bike that I can take when I go camping to ride some casual trails but also can get me to work down the road just 5 miles. Is there any street legal options out there?
Im 56 6’0” 175lbs, rode a yz80 when i was a kid. Looking to get back to riding, no plans for moto but would like a bike that has some 2-stroke bite but also feel safe and comfortable? What do you suggest?
Forgot to add i rode a yamaha 450f and a 2-stroke yz250 and felt bike was a little heavy and the bike rode me. Maybe i just need to learn bike balance again but liked the power. Just dont want to over bike buy?
My first dirt bike was Chinese 125 when i was around 14. Got it for $400. Next bike was a chinese 250. Chinese bikes are great cuz theyre cheap, but do not expect them to be anywhere near as good as a proper bike. Although i did like my 125 more than my friends xr100. The 250 isn't great though. I think pretty much any old yamaha or honda 100-150 is a great starter bike if it's in good condition. Im currently building an old yz125 2 stroke, which should be a superfun bike when finished.
Just getting into riding and looking to purchase a bike. I demoed a CRF250f and had a blast on it but since I’m in California would I be better off growing with a CRF250RX due to the different terrain we have? I live near the high desert but also mountains for enduro not looking to do track, just not sure if an RX is too advanced to just jump into
We have a 22 Honda CRF250RX and its a fun bike but its considered a closed course race dirt bike. You can learn on it be its basically a Motocross bike with a few offroad goodies. MUCH more power and its a taller frame. However, that doesn't mean you cannot learn on it. I would recommend getting some dirt bike training which will help you with the proper riding technique.
Currently trying to sell my dual sport KLX230 since I only ride dirt and save weight. Just starting but when I went to the trail everyone else was on 2 Stroke KTM’s and pretty overwhelmed on the trail difficultly. They describe it as single track borderline enduro. I’m looking at the TTR230 and CRF250F would those be good options? I really like the idea of the Beta but kinda pricey. I’m 200lbs and 5’6.
Yeah a TTR230 or CRF250F work well for trail riding once you get into the more technical enduro terrain they still work they just aren’t as good as a Beta Xtrainer or 200RR but you can still have fun.
41 year old with 0 dirtbike experience. I have always wanted a dirtbike and I am finally ready to buy. After a few weeks of research I have decided to go with a klx300R. It seems to check all the boxes for me and It looks great as well. I like how it doesn't have the fork covers. It looks the most like a real moto x bike. ( I am well aware it is not a moto-x bike lol) Is there any reason you may think I should look at any other bike before I go ahead with the purchase?
The KLX300R is a solid choice liquid cooled 300 motor with better front forks I would say the only downside is that it’s heavy. What type of riding are you looking to do?
So the CR85 is not a good beginner bike it’s considered a motocross race bike and has a bike of a on off switch for the power. You can definitely ride it but might be better with a trail bike.
I just got a 2006 wr450 and I realize my mistake. It is great condition from marketplace just too big. Would you recommend taking it to a dealership or a private seller to trade? I am looking for either a yz250fx or a wr250. I do have experience with manual quads and have a Sur Ron I’ve had for just over a year. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you
You usually can get a better price selling it private. Yeah both the YZ250FX and a WR250 are solid options the YZ250FX is more of a race bike so keep that in mind
I was thinking about getting the CRF250F and upgrading the suspension for clearance and control, but that would cost a good bit of money. Would it be smarter just to get a CRF250R since it already has the better suspension? This is for trail riding in the desert. (6'3" - 210) Thanks!
Yeah the cost of upgrading the suspension in the CRF250F isn’t worth it for sure. The Honda CRF250R is a motocross bike and not all that great at single track. The CRF250RX is better but not much. I would recommend the YZ250FX, WR250, or KTM250XCF if you want to stick with 4strokes
@@dirtbikesam I am good with 2 strokes as well. I just want something that wont break the bank (I have an adventure 890R) that I can throw around on a trail and not worry about it quitting on me.
The road registered 450s are a bit milder making around 40hp, if you have self control and can use a clutch, one of these 450s is doable as a beginer bike
So Sir- Outstanding commentary. About me. 57 years old. Big Guy. 270 Pounds. Rode some as a Kid back in the day. Nothing to spectacular. Moving to Nevada from California soon. Many trails available. I want to get a decent Older Guys Bike. Who's basically going to be a beginner again. I really have my eyes on the Kawasaki KLX 230 or KLX 300. Good choice for a Fat, Bald Old Guy to get back in the swing of things. Thanks for your time and consideration!!!!!
Greetings earthlings 🖖 I stand 6foot’2inches’ and weigh about 275 pounds. And what would you say would be a fit bike for me to ride from South America to Los Angeles? This thought crossed my mind today and plan on going forward with it. Although I never ridden a dirt bike and would be seeking some sort of class to give me the fundamentals that will help me out. Thank you for your help
I looking for a bike that will suit me ready for a road bike ,would like to work on skills with training drills like msf coarse etc.and trail riding.im new to riding so no need to go suppa fast.what is the best option for me ?
i want a dirt bike to ride around on gravel roads and since i live on a farm i need to have one that can handle like corn stocks and things like that. I also dont know anything about them, but i am looking for one.
I went with the 300 xc w even though i didn't need the 300 it ran by far the best at low speeds and really has that low end grunt . I just found it an easier bike to ride for me . But you have to watch out for that big power it can catch you off guard
Yeah its a sneaky good beginner bike because you can ride it in a higher gear and it still has the grunt to give traction. For sure its still can be a fire breathing dragon.
Because i live on the East Coast (North Carolina), I'll stick with a dual sport. But if i lived out west, out in the open, I would definitely get a dirt bike!!
@dirtbikesam Honda xr150l 😅 i know, i know it's not much to speak of, but at the moment, it's what i can afford. Plus, it's my first motorcycle, and i always wanted to ride, especially dirt roads, etc. Can't wait to go on a BDR trail!!!
Im 6.3' and i have no idea what a good starter bike for me would be coues i only got dirt and gravel roads around me but i think id travel abit to hit some trailes once i know how to ride
I have a 2017 KTM 250xcf and really like it, though would consider a less powerful and fast bike for more challenging mountain, rough terrain. Would want it to feel light, crawl well, and be easy to handle. Would not want to go down to a trail bike. Skill level is intermediate. Are there options that sound right for this? Thanks for the helpful video.
I’m 13 so obviously not an adult but I was looking into upgrading from a 85cc to 125cc as it’s too small (I’m 5’8) I don’t do motocross or enduro or any type of racing but I love riding on extreme off road tracks on and around the farm, lots of hills and my favourite type of riding, mud running! Anyways I wanted to know if you had any recommendations, the bike needs to be durable and be able to take a beaten (probably gonna fall off a lot lol) would like it too have a liquid cooled engine and preferably electric start but isn’t a must. Power isn’t really an issue, doesn’t need a lot since I’m not racing but enough to get over hills with ease. Also I won’t really be doing any single tracks.
Does this still hold true for somebody 6'4 230lbs? I have owned a lot of street bikes - looking to transition the XC. Worried about the 250 for my weight. Thank you
What type of riding are you planning on doing? Remember it’s not about the power it’s being able to control the power. These new 250 four strokes and 2 strokes rip. Learn the proper riding technique and the. Ride the crap out of the 250 and sell it once you feel like it’s not enough
The old GasGas company before they where bought out buy KTM are totally different but the newer GasGas are just red KTMs with a few parts differences. However Rieju took over the old GasGas company and they do have lower seat heights
I'd like to get an off-road bike but I need to use it on the road for a small percentage of the time. I've seen a Beta 200 RR for sale and I'm tempted at that but concerned that it might be too off road focussed? A two stroke appeals to me as I have four strokes road bikes. Just want a fun machine that can do most things. Any advice appreciated. BTW great overview. Thanks Sam
If you are only on the road a little bit a 200RR will work great. If those road trips are more then a few miles then you might want to consider getting a Beta 4 Stroke.
I’m 6’ 240lbs. I’ve ridden just about everything in Motorsports including dirt bikes. Never owned a dirt bike though. Looking into getting one but also don’t want to break the bank. Def want a 4 stroke. I kind of have an awkward body, super long torso and shorter legs. What are your suggestions?
@@TURBO-TR a 6' person at 240 lbs is either morbidly obese or juiced to the eyelids. Either way, unhealthy. Facts don't care about your political correctness.
Great video I subscribed because of the great info. I would consider myself a beginner rider adult. Would a Honda crf 125f be too small for trail riding not looking for a powerhouse. I’m 6ft 205lbs.
I would go with a CRF250F or the TTR230. Both of those have bigger suspension and more power than the CRF125F. They are also the biggest trail bikes you can get but don’t be fooled by the 250/230 they both are air cooled 4 strokes that aren’t super powerful. Thank for the support.
I have very little knowledge and experience riding a motorcycle/dirt bike and am mostly looking to get one to get around on logging roads, up logging slashes and to access remote hiking trails so I can save truck from getting beat up. I am about 5'7 155 lbs. Would a 4 stroke 250 be the right choice for me?
Comment below if you have any questions!
What do I get as a bigger guy? 6’0 280
@dirtbikesam So would you still recommend a 125cc two stroke for someone that is 5'11 and about 250lbs?

I had CR500 at 35. At age 60, I wouldn't recommend it.
Well said! Thanks for your comment
what do you ride?
@spclcyclegstmusic
Whatever you do, don't get a 450 as a beginner... (like an F1 as your first car)
Exactly
My first bike was a ktm 250 2 stroke it was a lot but it didn’t kill me can’t say the same for everyone
Whoops....
@@BrokenBiker450R I guess you can run the tame map and plan for the best... CFR250F=23 HP@265lbs , CRF250R = 40HP@231lbs, CRF450R = 52 HP @245 lbs.
That was my first dirt bike. Kx450F. It’s a lot if you aren’t safe or have experience which in my case I do.
@@jacobboswell9325perfect timing you beat me to it but see my last comment. Those are the exact mods I plan to do 👍
Switching from 4t to a 2t is also a challenge with lack of engine braking. I see what all the videos mean about you have to get more skilled in the braking dept to ride one - but the lack of jerkiness on trails is wonderful for flat stuff
@@jacobboswell9325 Great advice.
300RR is a solid bike

I'm thinking it be cool to have an Enduro bike again that's road legal. In NZ they have to have abs which I hate off road but do provide safer road riding for less experienced riders I'd assume. This

I'm thinking about buying this bike as my first, been hearing good things about this motorcycle, i reckon 125 cc is suitable for beginners?
My first bike was a Honda XR200. Good bike, exceot the kickstart gear would strip about once per year. Then a KDX200, which i wish i still had, that bike was light, powerful & could do anything! This was the 1980's.
Now I ride a KTM 350 EXC-F which is a street legal dirt bike & is awesome.
Would love to have a KDX200 ...one of the funnest bike i ever rode!!
DO you recommenced the 350 EXC-F for beginners?
@basilistitieh5862 Not really. It's tall & very powerful.
Nice sounds like a sweet setup

This is helpful info for me.
Similar needs, experience.

Nicely done video. The only thing I might add is if you are a beginner to try to start with a good used bike if you can find one.
Great point! Thanks for the suggestion

As far as a bike that doesn’t have a manual clutch transmission?
@@dirtbikesam yeah I would prefer to ride a manual shift bike but am wondering which brand has the best shifting/clutching overall in terms of feel and longevity
@@dirtbikesam I have been wanting a kx250 or a kdx 200 for a while now and am not sure if that’s something I could start on
a KDX200 is a great bike to start on.
Thanks for the video Sam. What if I cant afford a new bike? I am looking at the $2000 - $3000 range so something between 2000 and 2010 model years.
Plenty of options around that price point, what type of riding are you planning on doing?
@@dirtbikesam Mostly open desert and trails. Maybe commute to work on it. I only live 3 miles from my office. So if it's a dual sport kind that works too but not the main purpose
I agree
So I am looking to getting into riding, I have rode motorcycles for years (Harley) but not dirt bikes, I’ve rented a few, and took them on the trails, one was a crf230 and the other was a tt230 I believe, I am 6’1” approx 200+ lbs.. both the previous bikes just seemed a little small for me, I’m gonna be mostly riding trails and riding with my kids, what’s a good bike that is big enough that’s not gonna rip my arms off, I was looking at the crf250f vs the crf250rx…
The CRF250RX is a better bike on the trails than a CRF250F
@@dirtbikesamwould you recommend the rx or another bike/brand .. fyi I’m 40 so not really planning on motocross ever
I like our 2021 YZ250FX and the KTM250XCF better than the RX

I’m 55 years old. I ride street bikes daily but I haven’t ridden a dirt bike since I was 16 but I’m wanting to get back in the dirt. I feel like I’ve done all of the research and I’ve decided I’m going w/ Kawasaki 250F. I like the Kawasaki because it’s not too much power and I can adjust the handlebars & foot pegs but my research says it handles well too.
Welcome to the dirt! When are you picking up your Kawasaki?
@@dirtbikesam I’ll get my bike in the next 60 days. Unfortunately, no dealers here in Las Vegas have a 250F. They have 250’s & 250X’s so I’m thinking I might have to order one. Thank you for the very helpful video.
Man 500 bikes deserve all the respect
What about a yz250? Rode a smaller bike as a young teen and am just getting back into it and I bought a 01yz250 and wanna know if I made a bad choice
If I’m just looking for something to ride in fields and In Forrest with us that considers trail or cross country
I currently have a klx230 dual sport and ride mostly in the desert on slower technical trails. The 230 has enough power for me, but he suspension is horrible. I am thinking about an xtrainer given I am still learning and am 5'8. Thoughts?
Xtrainer would be a solid choice
Too late, I already bought a used wr450f and finding out its a lot of power. It is intimidating. I was hoping to knock down the power delivery by going smaller on the rear sprocket by a couple of teeth. Any other suggestions?
What year is your WR? A great way to control any dirt bike is using the clutch to modulate the power. You can shift up to a higher gear and use the clutch to control the power. So practicing clutch control!
@@dirtbikesam 2015, Thanks for the tip.
Make sure the throttle stop screw hAsnt been removed until you get used to the bike. It won't allow you to use all the power. Just bought one for my 16 year old. His 125 the handle bars were hitting his knees. LOL

I would agree with everything he said. You can be a Beta, KTM or Yammy fanboy and agree that this was a fair analysis.

@@we3v321 WR250, CRF250RX, YZ250FX or if you want a 2 stroke the KTM 150XCW or even a KTM 300XCW
@@dirtbikesam thanks man I appreciate the input and recommendation.
Yeah the Beta Xtrainer in my opinion is a better bike to learn on than the KTM150XCW because of the lower seat height.

So are you just going to be trail riding?
@ orv trails in Michigan and Ohio and what ever else I can find. That is really all the options I have at the moment.

The CRF150R however they aren’t super reliable I would go with a YZ85 big wheel
I'm 220lbs 6' and I basically just want to learn to wheelie and do stoppies without being crushed by a street motorcycle. Will a 125 be good enough? A bicycle can do a stoppie but I'm not sure how well wheelies would translate to a streetbike.
Yeah a 125 will be enough and is super lightweight.

Hey guys, I live in Colorado and I’m looking for a bike that I can take when I go camping to ride some casual trails but also can get me to work down the road just 5 miles. Is there any street legal options out there?
Yes beta, KTM and Husqvarna make street legal bikes,
I just acquired a 2015 CRF450R, haven’t rode a bike since I was 9, I’m 22 now an I’m starting to see I should get another one for starting😂
Yeah the 450r is a beast of a bike

Forgot to add i rode a yamaha 450f and a 2-stroke yz250 and felt bike was a little heavy and the bike rode me. Maybe i just need to learn bike balance again but liked the power. Just dont want to over bike buy?
Beta Xtrainer or Beta 200rr or KTM150xcw
My first dirt bike was Chinese 125 when i was around 14. Got it for $400. Next bike was a chinese 250. Chinese bikes are great cuz theyre cheap, but do not expect them to be anywhere near as good as a proper bike. Although i did like my 125 more than my friends xr100. The 250 isn't great though. I think pretty much any old yamaha or honda 100-150 is a great starter bike if it's in good condition. Im currently building an old yz125 2 stroke, which should be a superfun bike when finished.

Yes never ride in my life but im having a look at the two you recommended on my other comment. Nice one 👊

Currently trying to sell my dual sport KLX230 since I only ride dirt and save weight. Just starting but when I went to the trail everyone else was on 2 Stroke KTM’s and pretty overwhelmed on the trail difficultly. They describe it as single track borderline enduro. Want to also mention yes overwhelmed but had so much fun!

That depends, if you like 2 strokes you can go with a 250/300 2T or for 4T maybe like a 350F.

Im 6.3' and i have no idea what a good starter bike for me would be coues i only got dirt and gravel roads around me but i think id travel abit to hit some trailes once i know how to ride
Hmm are you wanting the bike to be street legal?
I have a 2017 KTM 250xcf and really like it, though would consider a less powerful and fast bike for more challenging mountain, rough terrain. Would want it to feel light, crawl well, and be easy to handle. Would not want to go down to a trail bike. Skill level is intermediate. Are there options that sound right for this? Power isn’t really an issue, doesn’t need a lot since I’m not racing but enough to get over hills with ease. Also I won’t really be doing any single tracks.
so a KTM 125XC or YZ125X might be the best option for you.
I've never rode a gas gas ( thinking about getting 2 stroke) Do those bikes have a lower seat height??? In the videos i watch , they seem lower....
