    I built the re-release in December 2020 and started on it straight away.
    I did buy the resin "batted" F1 engines and aftermarket decals. I also did a fair amount of scratch-building. The whole thing is housed in an IKEA "Deltof" cabinet with a full colour photo poster of the LUT on the back wall, this and a mock up of the launch pad came from the USA. I completed the display with led some LED lighting at both top and bottom of the disay case.
    I also built the included LEM with the "unfolded" landing legs and that sits at the base of the Saturn IV instead of being folded up inside of the rocket which you can't see! I have just completed the Dragon 1:72nd scale "Apollo Retrieval" kit, (Old 66 and Capsule and raft). Its not a bad kit but needs a lot of work and scratch-building to make a more accurate model of "Old 66", (the Sikorsky SH3D helicopter). This will somehow be fitted into the display case too.

We seem to be of a similar age, and I guess we have learned that whatever you say, some people will always complain, so you might just as well say whatever the frack you have in mind. I would be as happy as you are if I had one of these! It's going to be a smidge over 5 feet tall when complete- my 1/96 Revell is 'only' 46 inches, which is a pretty impressive beast in itself. All the detail looks lovely and from what I've seen here looks correct for Apollo 11, apart from the blanketing on the F1 engines, but who wants to cover those?
    I look forward to watching the build.
    And who among us has never sometimes said glue when referring to polystyrene cement?

    • @memkiii
      @memkiii 2 года назад

      My Revell Contacta Professional bottle says GLUE on the label. So anyone who thinks that is wrong should tell Revell. My bottle of Gorilla Super Glue has the word Glue in the name. I blame Tamiya with their fancy extra thin cement.

    Nice one Nige.! I once owned an 'original' production Dragon kit in the all grey styrene. Was an absolute joy to go through seeing all the detail etc. I sold it on only because the huge Dragon box took up too much space.!
    Interesting to see the 'veyron' improved tooling version - looks much the same as mine from memory but I would have to compare side by side.

    I remember as a small kid having a Saturn V rocket kit that wasn't anywhere near the size of your kit, Nigel. If I remember correctly (been so many years!) The entire model with launch tower stood just over 20 or 22 inches high. I don't remember who made it or when, but it must have been in the early 70s. Great trip down memory lane, thank you!
    It was your sprue review of the Tamiya 1/350 IJN Yamato that made me a subscriber. Remember the old saying about I like the way you do something better than the way your detractors and critics DON'T. Don't give way to the haters like so many others did.....

    Hi Nigel:
    Like a few others who have commented, I have this magnificent model as well and look forward to your build of it in the future. However, as I know you enjoy accuracy, I recall from other reviews of the kit that Dragon made the F-1 engine bells too small and the stringers around the inter-stage rings represent only 1/2. There were some other shortcomings as well but I can't remember what they are. The stringer matter can be resolved by adding lengths of the proper shape of Evergreen strip or, as one chap did, sanding the rings bare and adding all new stringers. My! As for the F-1's, since you want to build them "naked," I don't think anything can be done to alter their profile but I could be wrong. Nevertheless, I think they look the part and if you were to add some of the complex plumbing at the engine tops, no one would be the wiser. By the by, I believe the only Saturn V that flew without the engine coverings was Apollo 4.
    Should you decide to detail your Saturn a bit, a set of 1/48th scale plans of the rocket is available from "Real Space Models." I have these and the details and information are excellent. As an example, there is one page of the plans that shows all of the black and gold (mylar foil) patterns applied to each Lunar Module flown (including Apollo 13); every LM was distinct from the others.
    However you approach your build, I will be watching with great interest. Your Revell 1/96 Saturn project was very informative and I have no doubt the same will be the case with this beauty!
    Cheers!

      My error; thought it was the 1/96th scale "mini-beast" you had constructed. No matter; your techniques for the 1/144 build will be transferable to the bigger edition.
      And I assume the resin that you're referring to for the 1/96th scale "Sat V" is by "New Ware?" If it is, I have the set as well and it's very well done; offers a lot of improvements for the model for a very reasonable cost. "Real Space Models" offers a correct Block 2 CSM and batted F-1 rocket bells for the 1/96th Saturn.

    Great channel Nigel. My Dragon Saturn v came in the original box and unfortunately it was almost totally destroyed. It had been run over by something. They just told me to keep it and refunded me. The second one came in two boxes same as yours. The engines are crap, well under side, resin batted ones are way better and make it look right. If you want to show all the detail, there is a kit out there of an F1 rocket motor in a much bigger scale that looks amazing.....if it's still available.

    I built one of these bad larrys a while back- with a lot of my own 3d printed parts to boot. Out of the box it seems lacking, but with a minimal amount of effort it really turns into an awesome kit! I really loved putting in the extra effort to make it a bit more realistic. And with aftermarket decals it really finished off nicely. Id build another at some point - and HOPEFULLY, Hopfully they get around to letting that Saturn IB out sometime soon.

    Dragon 1/72 Apollo 11 Saturn V. One of the many mistakes with the instructions is in STEP 2; it shows two tank tops F2 & F4 going into the second stage body (b2). F2 (ribbed cap) is the top of b2 S-II Second Stage and F4 (domed) is the top of the LOC tank S-IC First Stage and goes in the top of b1. The tank tops are a poor fit into the tops of the stages, bit of a 'sausage down a hallway', leaving an off centre fit to the inner walls. The CSM and LM are from the Dragon Apollo 11 1/72 kit, so some parts are for an extended-leg LM in landing or landed mode. Am yet to get to the clear parts and work out where they fit or if they are relevant to this kit. The 1st stage tank/body seams are covered by the Cable Tunnels, but the 2nd and 3rd are not, so much filler and sanding needed there and of course enormous surfaces to paint. I think your comment on Dragon instructions worst on the planet is being kind! For reference (indispensable) I have books, PICTURING APOLLO 11 ISB 978-0-8130-5617-3, HAYNES APOLLO 11 OWNER'S WORKSHOP MANUAL ISBN 978-0-7603-6657-8 and John Duncan has a fantastic web site www.apollosaturn.com/ cheers.

      Sorry I asked a question when you were showing the instructions instead of watching the video further through.
      I was thinking of using gold leaf for the landing module if I get it.

    Hi Nigel, I have purchased the Dragon Apollo 11, 1/72 (in Australia) and find the instructions an absolute Barry Crocker! Using Dragon's plans, man would not have made it to the moon. I looked to see if you did a build video for this model but can't find one. I found that the instructions have upper and lower case designations yet the sprues are all uppercase, also the A, b, C etc are multiple yet different part sprues. Also the instructions show ex E12 (E12) go here, what are the 'in brackets' referring to? do they mean the bracket is a duplicate part on the opposite side? Hoping you have go before and can shed some light on my dilemmas, Cheers.

      I haven't built it yet Michael. Dragon make the worst instructions on the planet. I reckon the brackets denote ,"repeat on opposite side"?

      I think I will, it looks like a pretty quick build, and the results are very rewarding. I gave my Revell Saturn V away, and I miss it.

      @@NigelsModellingBench I had the Estes, Sat-v and the Sat-1b rocket kits, and they were interesting builds. To me, the hardest part of the builds is the black marking 2 tones paint schemes. Im interested to see how you paint the black and white body tube panels in 2 tone. Its a awesome kit you got there!

    I've thought about building this for years and it's still available, thankfully, but all listing's seem to be selling it without the original box, just as you received it. Enjoyed the review, but is the Revell 1/96 model better than this?

    I got two of these kits, one to do stacked, and the other separates. However, i have learned that instructions are awful, and very very inaccurate. so much of the kit is discarded for resin upgrades, inc those terrible shaped F1 Engines.

  • @aj-2savage896

    Note the conical fairings for the main engines on the first stage are wrong. Dragon portrays them as looking bulged, or "overinflated." They should be straight, as if you curved a piece of paper or sheet styrene. Every other Saturn V kit has it the right basic shape, yet this one didn't. Sad.

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  2 года назад

      Thank you. That should be easy to sort out?

      @@NigelsModellingBench Looking at your copy of the instructions, looks like they are moulded integrally with the bottom circumference of the stage. So not extraordinarily daunting, but not a 30-minute delay either. But a big, fairly obvious error. Have fun. Just saw Dragon are releasing a 1/72 Saturn IB roundabout March.

      @@NigelsModellingBench Not really a simple thing to sort out. The Dragońs fairing are wrong shape and are way too short as well as the corugation on the base of the first stage is short too. The kit´s fairing is about 1/3 of the lenght they should be. This is really the biggest error - almost uncorrectable of this monster.

    Probably several google translate errors. Dragon = Weilong = Veyron. Dragon = Weilong one is English and Weilong probably how it's called in China, the long in weilong translates to Dragon, but google translated decided to spell the company name that way. And the Weilong = Veyron is a phonetic transliteration error (same sound) by google translate, just like you'll find a lot of jokes and memes about erroneously translating by sound the chinese word 'Fuk', which means good luck, into the F-word.

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  2 года назад

      Thanks for this info.. so it is still Dragon after all, but apparently better than the older initial issue in quality.

    • @kamui004

      @@NigelsModellingBench Now that I remember, since Chinese doesn't have an alphabet, a lot of foreign language words are phonetically spelled using other words in Chinese, often times making a play with words that have close meanings to the foreign term. And looking at the words more closely. The Bugatti Veyron in chinese, in fact it is spelled using the word WeiLong. And Dragon (DML), the company name in Chinese is indeed written Weilong which roughly translates to 'Prestige Dragon'. So, it's not technically a google translate error, rather it not knowing context and going all over the place with those words in the same paragraph, like is it a company known in the west as Dragon? is it a company named Weilong? or are you talking about the Bugatti Veyron?
