    Jump on board with us as we embark on an Atlantic adventure, commencing in Shetland, in the North Sea.
    In this episode, we navigate our way through the madness of the Solent in summer, visiting secluded anchorages and a nature reserve. It truly feels like we have sailed into the mecca of sailing, passing hundreds and hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes. A great opportunity arose to practice boat handling under sail, as we choose a spot to anchor. Lots of sailing in this episode, and some rather uncomfortable and nerve-wracking navigation in some snotty weather.

    The skipper of the Queen Mary II might not recognise you, but he does recognise us, in Snow Gum. We were crossing Cherbourg harbour in the minutes before he was about to steam out (we didn't know!) from the Titanic's berth when we lost a fender right in front of him, at night. It took us three attempts, reversing and going in circles, to snag it and pull it back on board. He said, 'Snow Gum, Snow Gum - Queen Mary II. Well done. Can we leave now?' Ha! 🙂

      We went a little west of Poole and then headed all the way back to Harlingen in the Netherlands. The dream of getting to the Scilly Isles is still just a dream! We are hoping to get to the Mediterranean via the Canal du Midi this year if all goes well.

      If the wind is right we like to drop anchor under sail as often as we can. That way if we do lose the engine we've practiced how to get in and out an anchorage 🤞🏼

    Great video! Yes Poole harbour entrance can be quite demanding when the tide is ebbing and particularly if there is wind over tide. You got in though and that’s the main thing. Running aground in there is pretty common. It is a very shallow harbour outside of the main channels but v rewarding. Safe travels 😊

    • @sailingmaalie
      @sailingmaalie  5 месяцев назад

      Yup, there was a fierce amount of water moving in that channel, wind over tide like you say. Poole Harbour was amazing, we spent a couple of weeks there. Thanks for commenting 😁

      @sailingmaalie  5 месяцев назад

      Does yours work well? What sort of boat is it on?

    • @sailawayteam
      @sailawayteam 5 месяцев назад +1

      @sailingmaalie I've only got it installed since last late summer and used it in lighter winds, and it works quite well in all points of sail. Not yet tested in big following seas which is hard for any autopilot. I have a 31 footer, quite light and somewhat narrow boat, it's an enlarged version of the Finnish H-boat.

    • @sailingmaalie
      @sailingmaalie  5 месяцев назад

      @sailawayteam Tightening the bungee has helped us in lighter wind, bit below 9 knots it's time for the autopilot! We can attest to it working in following seas, 3000 miles across the Atlantic. Haven't seen this boat before, the H boat looks quick!

    • @sailawayteam
      @sailawayteam 5 месяцев назад +1

      @sailingmaalie yes, it's wonderful boat to sail, and fast too for a non-planing hull. I've noticed too that the bungee is indeed a critical part of the pilot 😃

      @@sailingmaalie They also go downwind like dream. No boom to worry about. Reefing is just a matter of lowering the halyard. Because it's a fully battened sail it's as easy as that.

    I have issues with my (raw) water pump failing prime, too. Have rebuilt it several times but it still fails to prime. I have therefore had to develop a technique of assisting the priming (after a heal or a dry out) by pulling the water through.

    • @sailingmaalie
      @sailingmaalie  5 месяцев назад

      This was our experience too, inconsistent priming. Vetus called it a 'lazy pump.' Perished lip seal at back of pump and a bearing that you almost could not turn by hand. Lots of footage in the next video with shiny new pump.

    • @stephenburnage7687
      @stephenburnage7687 5 месяцев назад

      @sailingmaalie Mine is a Jabsco but the same issue. I replaced all seals, bearings etc but still have the sane problem.

    • @sailingmaalie
      @sailingmaalie  5 месяцев назад +1

      Ah that is a real pain! We decided not to replace piece by piece as we were on a tight schedule sailing south, so would struggle to pick up post. It was expensive, but new pump now primes and works perfectly. Perhaps you have an issue downstream of the pump? Closer to inlet or water strainer? Hope you find a solution!

    Your main sheet set up looks dangerous to me. Seems like same design as the one that killed 2 sailors recently. They had steel cables though on almost 70ft yacht

    • @sailingmaalie
      @sailingmaalie  5 месяцев назад +1

      We only use this setup when we have the sprayhood cover extension on, otherwise we have a standard traveller and mainsheet. What seems dangerous about it? Plenty of serious offshore boats with this setup, including Kirsten's CG36 in which she won the GGR..

    • @DaleNewnham
      @DaleNewnham 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@sailingmaalieI also watched that video where people died. They lost control and crash gybed and the main sheet being close to the helm caught round them if I remember correctly. It was a big boat and the forces were massive compared to your boat, but your mainsheet is very close to you when sailing so caution when gybing is needed!
