And once again, we see that there is no situation so bad, no problem so severe, no nightmare so terrifying, that the Holy Inquisition can't make it worse.

Exactly. Perhaps a slight "Culling" of the Most Holy of the God-Emperor's Inquisition is in order. maybe just 50% to 60%, nothing to extreme.

@@ovk-ih1zp on this point. i always felt the recruiting and “processing” of imperial inquisitors was a bit lax. I get having hard characters who are willing to get dirt on their cloths as compared to the often “clean” astartes. The important but not as glorious task of policing the imperium and its parts, the ends justify the means stuff. but as far as I can see, the bar for entry should be a little higher.

@@midshipman8654 The old adage of "Power Corrupts & Absolute Power Corrupt Absolutely" has been proven correct in humanity relatedly over the millennia.
Unfortunately, the Emperor's Most Holy orders of the Inquisition have been proven repeatedly to be as fallible & corruptible by power as any other human.
To paraphrase "Watchmen", "Who Polices' The Inquisition?" & to the regret of tens of thousands of imperial worlds & probably TRILLIONS of it's citizens, NO ONE has the authority to "Police" the Inquisition.
I tend to agree that there HAS to be an organization that can & WILL do the dirty jobs that no one else could or would do. But like in current year American politics we find groups that ABUSE their power & are never held fully accountable. The FBI/DOJ uses it's organizational power in an attempt to destroy a duly elected President, not because they have evidence of crimes or corrupt foreign influence, but because they don't like his politics.
The DOD/Pentagon conceals the number of troops in a theater of operations in pursuit of their own agenda & AGAINST the lawful orders of the Commander-In-Chief.
The NSA LIES to congress repeatedly over two decades on HOW, WHY & TO WHAT END they are illegally spying on American citizens.
NO ONE has spent a day in jail over these actions.
These are governmental organizations that would take one look at the Imperial Inquisition & say "We Need To Be Like That". And THAT scares the crap out of me.
In EVERY governmental structure there must be both ACCOUTABILITY & Checks & Balances to prevent one party becoming too powerful & taking the road to Absolute Authoritarianism.

@@ovk-ih1zp ...ok. Dont know about all that irl stuff. But there should be a fast reaction branch given the massive and slow rate of the administratum. I just Wish the inquisitors in question had to pass a years long test, training and extreme hypno-indoctrination and arcane 40k stuff. AN organization of swift decisive action like the Inquisition is necessary in a universe as dangerous as 40k, I just wish the Bar for entry was higher and required more on the "resume". Like having to deal with administrative jobs for 20 years, military for 20 years and socio-political for 20 years, on top of mental augmentations and failsafes.

The Inquisitor stared across the desk at the tech adept who had finished the report on the Lamentors.
"So... what you are saying is... the only reason that the Lamentors had any resistance at all to the madness field of the space hulk is because they have been through so much pain and misery?"
"Indeed, sah." His servos that managed his eyes lowered in a simulacrum of a sad facial expression.
"And... if we reward them and thus make their lives better in any way, they will lose that edge they have and undoubtedly be less useful to the imperium, correct?" The sound of incredulousness creeped into his voice.
The tech adept nodded, "Yes, sah. If we show them kindness, it will weaken the chapter and thus make it possible for them to be destroyed by the next threat from the Maelstrom."
The inquisitor tapped the table with a single finger in a rhythmic fashion as he thought. He finally spoke, "So, the only logical conclusion is that we must make the Lamentors even more miserable for their own good." He sighed and leaned back in his reclining chair, rubbing the bridge of his nose, "I cannot refute your logic, but that doesn't mean I like this."
The tech adept shrugged what passed for shoulders, "And the irony is, you cannot even explain your actions, lest the abuse will not serve a purpose."
The Inquisitor sat up in his chair, "Fine, but... let's make the abuse we heap upon them so insane and ludicrous that nobody would take it seriously. Say... Let's condemn them for... Not destroying the largest Space Hulk EVER recorded... fast... enough?"
The tech adept paused and made whirring and clicking noises for a good ten seconds before he responded, "Agreed. Nobody could possibly take such a complaint seriously."
The Inquisitor stood up while slamming the palms of his hands on the desk simultaneously, "Good. I don't look forward to this, but in the end, it is the purpose of the Inquisition to do the dirty work that needs to be done, so that the good and pure do not have to be stained with dark deeds."
The Tech Adept began to put the final touches on the prepared documents, "It is for the Greater Good, Sah. The Emperor will understand."
The Inquisitor adjusted his ceremonial robes and started off to the audience chamber to give his final report to the assembled warders, "I fear that in the end, this will not be viewed in a favorable light.... but we do what we must to protect the saints among us, even if we must wound them to do so." He sighed and paused at the exit, "I pray that history will be as understanding... and I pray for the Lamentors as well."

Combine this with a diverse array of different ideologies within them and you have a nice mix of reasons to do stupid stuff.
We have those in the lore that are more fixated on pretty fires and sparkly sparkly planets (some could argue those are the ones thinking about stuff and declaring loudly one shouldn`t do it - thinking included - and prefer everyone and everything that scarres them rendered into xyz extra crispy, and create stupid situations by not wanting to risk it for the brisket, or save important info)
Then we have those that are too interessted in their devastating ol` game of lets "poke the warpbeast/necronomicon/... into its fluffy tail with a stick, whats the worst that could happen" and likly consider reason or the aknowledgment of ones own borders as heresy.
(These are the ones that seem to think that a stop sing is just a bad use for pwetty colors)
And then there are of course the edgelords within the branches of the inquisition, that go along the line of "oh we know exactly what can go wrong *hihi*, how much damage it will do *snicker* and how terrible it will be for all in generall *cackle*.... lets do it for the -lulz- .... strenghtening of the empire. While we vanish the moment the ork sniper hits the celestial -lion- fan"

If he worked to secure the bastions of streingth now, it might well have meant centuries of invulnerability on the great enemy's part. I mean sure, the enemy would return. But they WHERE GOING to return no matter what. It seams the chapter master simply did not understand that there where limits to what could be accomplished when you're dealing with an area like this. Plus it would seem likely that the various hostile elements would simply cannibalize each other after the campaign, which would finish off the weakest elements still standing, and severely reduce most of the elements that weren't dealt with as throughly as the wardens would like. Hell they probably could've let them kill each other over resources, and came in a bit later and finished them off after they were weakened from infighting. Or even bait them into fighting each other some more since the enemy was so decentralized, just like how they deal with Ork empires. If they had eliminated everything then it would have taken far longer for that vacuum to be filled. However, since they were forced to stop early, a new threat could easily walk in, show the survivors of the scourge campaign who daddy really was, then unite them against the warders. The only reason the warders got as far as they did was because they weren't fighting a united front and you can bet your last credit that the survivors realized that too.

The Wardens filled the vacuum. Factions like by there very nature wouldn't ever get along unless immediately and directly threatened. But I wouldn't be surprised if the writer just handwaved stuff away like this away since 40k seems to do a lot of that.

Warp travel can take you anywhere especially if your a servant of the dark gods. Not to mention that the scourge campaign spilled a lot of blood over a couple years. It would be a simple matter of a pirate tried to flee the conflict and got captured by a warband for them to learn where the conflict was as well as the situation. They could then use their mastery of the warp to appear deep in the maelstrom without the warders being the wiser. I Think, that the Lamenters were able to resist the influence of the Fuck-Hulk better than others, because, as blood angels descendants, they had to deal with the twin threats of the Red Thirst, and Black Rage. In this, they would have been very much Used to resisting such things like Psychic torment.

Add in the spice of a near unstoppable existential horror, and you have one hell of an event. All topped with the Imperium's favorite flavoring: Bureaucratic Nightmare Fuel.

... I'll give Rovik credit for wanting to remove the heart of the problem in the first place. But really, did the chapter master consider just what kind of enemy he was dealing with? This wasn't some xenos empire or disloyal world. Cygnax was destroyed by an organized chaos strike next to a stronghold of that source. And chaos is a VERY insidious force to the extreme. This was a war of the mind, not just bolters and void weaponry. He must indeed have gotten full of himself if he insisted on such a plan without careful precaution behind what could happen in the back of an astarties head. And what's more, if there really was any "end" to the forces involved... this is chaos we're talking about here. The rules of reality DO NOT apply.

    • @This_side_of_the_internet

Rovik was convinced that after securing the real space and planets surrounding the maelstrom they could push on ahead to establish some sort of beach-head and keep any intrusion pushed back at its source. he didn't account for his own Imperium's bureaucracy to literally sap his campaign's strength away before it began. the Astartes as ever sacrifice everything for so little to gain.

    • @manumainio
      @manumainio 4 года назад +1

The maelstorm was infested with much more than just chaos. And without the shield of Cygnax, if the grid was to be ever made "safe" again the maelstorm would have to be purged.
What force to better do that than 4000 astartes? Seems like they would have succeeded too if a fourth of their forces weren't pulled back.

Funny you should ask that. There is a faction in the Inquisition, called the Istvaanians, that think the Imperium's problem is that it's too complacent, and that they need to deliberately cause conflict and strife to keep the Imperium on its toes. They engineer xenos invasions and start rebellions anywhere that hasn't recently been visited by disaster.
I'm just gonna say that again.
There is a group of Inquisitors.
      Responsible for Mankind's survival.
      That look at WARHAMMER FORTY-COCKING-THOUSAND.

@@Venneroth To be fair they're doing the same thing a penetration tester does to the physical and electronic security of large companies, and what the Adeptus Custodes do to themselves during their Blood Games. I. e. the only way to reliably discover your weak points is to invite someone to deliberately try and break your defenses, then make sure any holes that were exploited by the attackers are patched up and covered. Doing that live and without constraints is of course very dangerous, but on the other hand during a genuine this-is-not-a-drill emergency nobody is going to fake their response or fail to take the excercise seriously, so Istvaanians do have a point.
