When you have had the success of this man, he proves we're all human. Dropping a stick, who cares. His drumming is legendary and will be listened to forever.
I started learning a couple months ago. I watched a lesson about holding the drum sticks very lightly. Another video talked about drum sticks falling out of people's hands. I thought that was silly. As I'm playing now I'm dropping my sticks quite often. Hell, sometimes they hit eachother and go flying around haha.
Its inevitable. And usually in the middle of a performance. Or, when a director is talking, and everything is quiet, until that dreaded sound of stick hitting floor makes you want to find the nearest hole and crawl into it.
Such a beautiful thing to see. Music production has become so mechanized, computerized, and unforgiving, that feel, humanity, and style have been processed out, and to hear the human element is really refreshing ... when it's allowed to be heard.
Such great playing, and so awesome that the stick drop was not left out. Who cares!! So nice to have something that's totally honest. No need to take things too seriously or pretend to be "perfect."
This wasn't just a hihat lesson, this is also a great groove lesson :) I love how he uses the tip of the stick on the hihat, not just the shoulder of the stick, like so many drummers do nowadays
Thanks for the lesson sir. I been a guitar player most of my life and just started playing the drums less than a month ago. This was a solid lesson, thanks! Yew!🤙
doesn't look like it but, this is a great lesson because after he drops the stick(which was real, we all do it )he does the same beat using opposite hand work and keeps it simple.that teaches your left hand independence while using match grip, which steve can do.butt his bread&butter is traditional grip, like all other great drummers.
I Have a hi hat problem... i cant seem to find the right gap between me and the hi hat. If I put the hi hat were i feel the most comfortable with my hands I eventually get cramp in my foot/ancle. If I put it further away I Have problems playing with my sticks, losing them etc. Anyone has any tips? Bigger hi-hat? ( Have 14 Inch) Steve Smith is the greatest, bought Sonor drums cause of him!!
You're not human if you don't drop a stick every once in a while. You are human however if you can be able to laugh at yourself about it. That's the lesson here folks. You're a legend Steve.
Yeah its very common of me to drop, throw, and/or hit myself with my sticks just about every sesh. I might have to invest in a helmet and goggles soon...

I love this guys playing style. It's so relaxed but yet so complex.
He’s a pro and a professor. My first virtual mentor.
New to drumming and just now realizing how to play and get different sounds from the high hat is a whole skill set.
Lots of fun! great drummer with a great sense of humor.
And the coolest thing: no edition about dropping the sticks
1:57 so he IS human.
and so deep ...master
btw new Avedis z's kick ***
and if you count it out ... he never droped the beat !! :D

trust me, he had planned it long before the recording had happened
LOL
Thank you for all you've done for drumming and taking the time to demo hi hats! cymbals !!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for leaving the stick drop in the video and not editing it out, even the best make mistakes!
Such great playing, and so awesome that the stick drop was not left out. Who cares!! So nice to have something that's totally honest. No need to take things too seriously or pretend to be "perfect."
Mr. Smith: You could drop the stick a hundred times and still be AWESOME!
This wasn't just a hihat lesson, this is also a great groove lesson :) I love how he uses the tip of the stick on the hihat, not just the shoulder of the stick, like so many drummers do nowadays

Well done Super Slim Steve! Always a pleasure watching you play.... Blessings!!!
Even the masters drop their sticks sometimes.
very cool! I just love how these amazing drummers do so much with very little set ups!
SS is a damn legend in his own time!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and humble still; Love this dude!)
1 of my favorite drummers
That was actually fun to watch and useful application-wise!!
Those who didn't like this must be Travis Barker fans
dvinmf what's wrong with Travis😂
adan flores He pretty much has no touch.
@@TheTechAndScience he also has bad technique and he tears up his hands when he plays
Thank you Sir Steve Smith 👍
Please, make a book & DVD on how to drop sticks!!!
He's great! This is a master-class-clip
Nice ,Makes me feel real good! Thanks Steve
Such a great kit
Very nice. The ending fill and tom tuning reminded me of Tony there at the end;). Steve is great!
Just pick it up! Always an education hearing, but especially watching if able, so thank you Memphis Drum Shop for having Steve, it was invaluable
Wow. That was fantastic.

Seems like such a good guy in addition to the excellence. Best combination....
Just pick it up-love it!!👏🏽👊🏽🖖🏽🥳
thank you
You're great teacher!
Are your Tom shells and bass drum, pine shells? They look gorgeous.
Gracias por la clase maestro.
humble genius. :)
What sticks is Steve using here>?
I thought I was good. There’s always room for improvement after seeing this guy play
The guy has style even when dropping the stick! How not to love him?
hi! i have a question
if you hit the hi hat
do you hit it with the tip?, the neck?, or the body? thanks
Maestro.......
I Have a hi hat problem... i cant seem to find the right gap between me and the hi hat. If I put the hi hat were i feel the most comfortable with my hands I eventually get cramp in my foot/ancle. Steve Smith is the greatest, bought Sonor drums cause of him!!
What a legend
Pure Genius
Good to see that drummers much better than me also drop their sticks occasionally
So awesome to leave the stick drop in the vid.....even the greats, are human.....sometimes
Very nice
So great and so relaxed, which is why he dropped the stick. No problem!! Just pick it up!
You're not human if you don't drop a stick every once in a while. You are human however if you can be able to laugh at yourself about it. That's the lesson here folks. You're a legend Steve.

Máximo De Mario zildjian avedis 14'' hats:)
What brand and size hats are used.
Zildjian Avedis
Awesome.
WHAT IS THAT KIT!!! I NEED IT NOW!!
Sonor Vintage Series
Came for the Jeff Goldblum, stayed for the great tips!
What drum kit is he playing?
Sonor Vintage Series.
Yeah its very common of me to drop, throw, and/or hit myself with my sticks just about every sesh. I might have to invest in a helmet and goggles soon...
Lol me too. He was trying to be fancy and dropped it.. so he gets a pass. I'm just a noob.. so I get a .. practice harder. Haha
@@WaltRBuckhe wasn't trying to get fancy, he was simply changing his grip by doing what just about every drummer does to change their grip.
You should hear him play some Journey songs, like on this video he has a pretty good left hand on the hi hat too, thats fancy!
Maybe the most musical drummer ever.
Just pick it the fek up 😎👍 awesome drummer... one of the best ✊️
a master.
I fucking loved the way the still keep recording after the stick drop. That makes him twice as godlike
Those quarter note triplets on the high hat or amazing like dang 😂😂
Even the greats drop sticks sometimes
😁😁👍👍👍👍
You learn more in three minutes with Steve Smith, than hours with all the 100 mph wanabees....
DAT Bass drum
My hats are almost level with the snare.
OMG he actually dropped a stick ...he is human.
How the hell does he play snare like that without getting carpal tunnel? I'm getting anxiety. >^
Ringooooooo
even steve smith drop his sticks heheh
Well at least I have something in common with SS and obviously is not the groove.
As a beginner drummer I can't laugh about him dropping the stick. My sticks are flying out of my hands sometimes
All professional drummers drop a stick once in a while
Steve Smith looks cool and all, but I'd rather hit my hi hats with a stick, their just so much lighter.
Imagine if you had to use the Ravens' Steve Smith . . .
That gave me a chuckle
Grip tape..lol!
I wish people would not spend so much time on intros. and get more riiiight into things.
The tom has a mount on it yet it's on a snare stand. mount that sucker on the bass drum. So stupid.
do you see a mount on the bass drum ?? stupidever heard the term resonance ? stupidugh stupid
