  • This is turn 3, Scenario A, The Guards Counterattack from Advanced Squad Leader's Beyond Valor module. The Russian capture their first building and attempt to take another, but German machine gun fire prevents all but one unit from getting into the building.

    It's quite amazing to see how the gameplay shapes itself into a coherent story as you play it - the Russians rolling forward with abandon, only to hit a wall of German machinegun fire and run away, the Commissar 'motivating' them back into the fray, snipers on both sides consistantly seeking out and firing at whomever drew their attention in the first place... It's almost uncanny how accurate the whole thing turns out to be, even down to the famous Russian teleporting Melee techniques ;-)...

    Unless I'm mistaken, at 1:12:00 or so, you have the guys in the Melee in the factory building Encircled. You have units in both adjacent hexes on the same level, and another unit below them at the bottom of the stairs. They have no route to the ground, so they're encircled.

    Unfortunately I will not be posting any more videos for this playthrough. I finished it up and was about to do the final publish of the video and discovered around 60% of it, in random sections, was missing. I think it was due to some "make my computer run faster" software I tried out and it decided to delete some of the cache from iMovie (the software I use). Sorry I can't finish it. Thanks for all the help and comments. There will be more! At the end of turn four I had the Russians concede. The Germans retook the building on the left, and had a foothold in the Russian building on the right. I blame that initial human wave as the key to the Russian downfall.

      I want to thank you for taking your time and making these excellent videos. It's rare to have such a good camera, explanations and in depth. I'm going to try this game and this scenario for the first time tomorrow and your videos made me much more confident. Although I'm sure to get my ass kicked anyways...

    Great use of rules. As a bit of strategy, when some one assault moves in a hex with TEM it does not make a difference if you wait to fire after everyone else has moved or not. So a good rule of thumb is to wait until the DF to fire at units that have assault moved. Small error - when a unit cowers it is marked with a Final Fire Keep up the great work really enjoying this play through.

    watched this serie many times, must laugh everytime wkhen I hear "they have a hard day, shot multiple time by their Kommi, and now they go berserk" (at about 18:16). That is epic truely.

    And sorry but there are some my first observations :-)
    1) You should leave Residual Fire counter after the attack at that Berserk HS - Residual Fire counters are different from those Fire Line RF, they can coexist and standard RF counters attack first. (A8.21, A9.222)
    2) A leader can not direct a second attack again if this second attack is made by different unit/weapon that was not participating in the first attack the leader was directing. (A7.53) So that solitairy attack by squad (K5) which fired with MG previously would not benefit from -1 Leadership and the last attack from K4 could not be lead for the same reason.
    3) I think 6-2-8 could make it to K4 if he made a bypass move (J2/I2, J2/I3) and continue to J3 and K2 (taking FPF possible).

      I haven't done a whole lot of ASL... I have "Red Packets" from Beyond Valor on my list but have a hard time finding filming time.

    Hey Counter,
    Question, the second attack with the Germans at 12:50 to 13:05 you rolled a (7), (6) was the white dice, (1) was the color dice. Aren't you allowed to take another shot with your MG for ROF since you rolled a (1) with color dice?

      +Claystone x Not in this case - the MMG had already lost ROF on the first shot so can't 'regain' it on subsequent fire attacks in the same phase.

    This system seems excessively complex for the small amount of realism it delivers. Something like Band of Brothers rewards proper tactics without all the fiddly rules and exceptions. It’s like ASL got all the details right, but without managing to get the big picture correct.

    Two things I notice while watching the second time
    A sniper of 1 on a broken squad will break that unit again and in this case it causes casualty reduction
    the German rout from H5 was illegal because he is actually moving closer in Hexes to the know unit in N5
    He starts 6 hexes away and when he goes to J5 he then 5 hexes away so he should have surrendered

    Great videos you made here. Reading the rules regarding the Human Wave (25.23) it states that no Guard units :( so the human wave was not an option for this scenario the Guards Counterattack. PS sorry to hear you are not making anymore videos.. I really watched them all and i thin you did a great job!

      Thanks for the kind words. Regarding the restriction on "guards", after a careful reading of the rules I'm fairly certain it refers to units that are guarding prisoners, and not Soviet units designated with the honorific "Guards" for outstanding achievements. So I think it was OK after all. And... I'm not done making videos! Just too many games and too little time to put them out consistently. Thanks again.

      Man!! Never stop learning :) Yes u r right there is a difference between GUARDS (the elite troops) and guard (guarding prisoners). Glad you are not done making videos and I will continue watching them.

    Gotta love Commisars!
    Couple items - Aren't the Germans in k4 upstairs at level 1? If so, there should be no close combat when the Russian squad advanced in k4 at ground level. Only units in the same Location (capital L) do CC so these guys are just adjacent (if there's a stairwell) and use PBF, not CC.
    Also, when the squad rallied by the Commisar did HOB, there should have been another +1 mod for being broken (it's based on when the 2 was first rolled) - no harm though as it would have been the same result.
