Everyone laments that Yahtzee didn't finish the Fantabulous Wonderment sequel or Cell, but I'd also liked to have seen Broken Boughs. In spite of the edgy elements, BB has an interesting premise. The mystery in it was intriguing and made me want to know more. I like the melancholy atmosphere it had. The protagonist guy's haircut is kind of dumb, but I like how sad and tired his expression in the bottom lefthand corner is. It perfectly conveys that he's deeply troubled without spelling it out through exposition.
It's intriguing how much Yahtzee depends on Gabe to bounce ideas and jokes off of, despite belittling him constantly. That awkward silence was testimony to that.
Yahtzee said he really wanted to see which of his 12 games in 12 months project people liked the most, but I feel like something similar could be done with the ones here. Some of these really are good enough to be given a second go, even if built from the ground up.
My theory on Cell. Perhaps the protagonist is the warden. My reasoning being that after a quick google search, 'Bestuurder' means 'Director'. So connecting the dots leads to the idea that he's the one controlling everything here. Also, I'm assuming the flashback about the bunk bed was about him having problems as a child, perhaps. Plus the guy he fought at the end seemed to think he killed someone he didn't remember, so I'm thinking perhaps that someone was himself. He was told throughout that death was too good for him, so I'm thinking this is his Silent Hill-esque punishment for what he has done
I wonder if maybe he was on his phone while driving, and the broken man is one of his friends who died in a crash. Norris "got in his way", because he was driving the other car.

Bestuurder, among other things, means warden, which also explains why the only palindrome phone number is the Warden's. The warden coincides with its opposite, which would be the prisoner.
Seriously, Yahtzee, if the whole making art aspect of development is what most frequently kills your motivation to make games, why don't you hire an external artist to do it? Some of your concepts looks extremely interesting (Phone/Cell especially), and it is a shame that some of them go to waste because you burn out on making the graphics yourself. Bestuurder, Dutch for: driver, director, manager, pilot, administrator, governor, ruler, chauffeur, head, conductor, guide, and last but not least, *warden.* Now I want to know the twist
I'm not usually a big fan of Yahtzee's product. For all that he loves to make spooky horror games, he rarely manages to conjure up much of an atmosphere -- it's always let down by shoddy art and awkward dialogue. But every so often his games come out with something genuinely startling and effective that makes me think if he really put his all into it he could do something great. Cell/Phone might be that thing. It's got a real feel of menace and some surprising moments, and the spell-casting phone is an awesome mechanic. It's a shame he gave up on it because it took too much effort, because that effort is the exact thing that could make it great. Yahtzee, remake this in something less shitty and it's the first thing of yours I might actually spend money on. And I don't even like adventure games.
I still think Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment is worth remaking in Game Maker, with interface improvements and possibly some other changes. After that, you can think about a sequel.
Haven't finished watching yet, but Phone looks amazing. Really interesting concepts. The Warden's phone number being 616 was a neat touch. I thought for a few minutes the twist was going to be "Besturder IS the Warden :O" until I realised that the prisoner uniform read 618 and not 616. I figure the numbers carry some significance though.
+JammyD2579 The character's name does mean "warden" apparently, so I think you hit the nail on the head there. Bestuurder doesn't really have a conscience so he has to rely on his perverted subconscious to punish him for the things he's done.
Totally understand why Yahtzee doesn't want to go back to old projects, but he should definitely think about remaking Phone (and absolutely calling it "Cell"). Would absolutely buy that.
Cell is the kind of game I would pay money for. I mean honestly just in that demo it's pretty much the kind of thing that looks like a peak for what he could have done with AGS, and it's a right shame he didn't do anything more with it.
you already wrote about sentient characters in a video game, how about you try your hand at short story about sentient characters in an abandoned build
It's prolly already been said, but "Bestuurder" can mean "Driver" but it can also designate a person in charge or running an organization, like a chairman, president, head administrator. Things like that. To be a "bestuurder" is to be in control or running something.
The Dan Gordon game would have some potential as a strategy / adventure game. Not just being able to work the factions, but could also add the option of missions expanding their territories, or just plain work the factions against each other. All the games looked like they had plenty of potential at least.
27:10 And after you cash in the insurance, walk out, if you walk back in he's killed himself. To think you have a customer, then to instantly have to pay them out.
+Prottimus Yeah, all the people saying it means "driver" sort of missed that point. The twist is obviously that he IS the warden and is somehow punishing himself James Sunderland style.
+Prottimus Right at the end, and on his prison jumpsuit, he is called 618, which I believe is the number of the Warden. Yep, that is totally the twist.
That's what Silent Hill is all about - monsters formed from your own strong emotions, like guilt, lust and hatred. The warden is probably punishing him for the guilt he feels, despite pretending to be a psychopath.
Maybe the Daniel Gordon that reversed the final equation didn't actually do that and is actually drawing all of the Daniel Gordons to the same universe, while the Extranoids are converting the now Gordonless universes
"Somehow this will only record when I put it on the very right edge of the screen, slightly overlapping the edge." I remember back when I wanted to play SC1 on Windows 7, I had to open the Screen Resolution window, and it would work properly. Otherwise it was really glitchy. Don't ask me why.
Haven't gotten past the intro banter yet. But mentioning things ending abruptly, it can't be any worse than The Box That Ate Time ending suddenly. Though.... that at least had a lot going on before it was just ended. Also... Getting my Blue Cup out for this. Cheers!
Wait, how can the whole Universe still exist, I thought the Galaxy in Fantabulous Wonderment went all third impact and ceased to exist in form? How did they get around that general ending?

It's prolly already been said, but "Bestuurder" can mean "Driver" but it can also designate a person in charge or running an organization, like a chairman, president, head administrator. Things like that.
To be a "bestuurder" is to be in control or running something.
I would really like to see Insidulous Cruelitude and Cell finished.
The Dan Gordon game would have some potential as a strategy / adventure game. Not just being able to work the factions, but could also add the option of missions expanding their territories, or just plain work the factions against each other.
All the games looked like they had plenty of potential at least.
On reviewing this, Rick & Morty's Interdimensional Council of Ricks is basically the Dangordonites from Dimension of Insidulous Cruelitude.
Cell reminds me a bit of The Cat Lady - both in atmosphere and artstyle.

And after you cash in the insurance, walk out, if you walk back in he's killed himself.
To think you have a customer, then to instantly have to pay them out.
Tonowen and his brother looking like Richie and Eddie in that photo at 32:39
Ooh, you should finish that !! *[Phone/Cell]*
Hah, Even yahtzee uses a oldgames folder! I'm not the only one!!
Besturder is Dutch for Warden
+Prottimus Yeah, all the people saying it means "driver" sort of missed that point. The twist is obviously that he IS the warden and is somehow punishing himself James Sunderland style.
+Prottimus Right at the end, and on his prison jumpsuit, he is called 618, which I believe is the number of the Warden. Yep, that is totally the twist.
That "Cthnk" noise that happens during Broken Boughs makes it feel like my sinuses are popping.
Phone looks fascinating! I'd play the hell out of it.
"Bestuurder" means "Director," "Ruler" or "Warden."
Is the twist that you are the warden or some shit?
or it means driver, just to fuck things up
That's what Silent Hill is all about - monsters formed from your own strong emotions, like guilt, lust and hatred. The warden is probably punishing him for the guilt he feels, despite pretending to be a psychopath.
In this scenario I think "controller" is a better translation. bestuur is a very flexible word in dutch (source: im dutch)
Yeah, It's either that, or that "Nate" is the warden. One of the two. Probably.
Maybe the Daniel Gordon that reversed the final equation didn't actually do that and is actually drawing all of the Daniel Gordons to the same universe, while the Extranoids are converting the now Gordonless universes
"Somehow this will only record when I put it on the very right edge of the screen, slightly overlapping the edge."
I remember back when I wanted to play SC1 on Windows 7, I had to open the Screen Resolution window, and it would work properly.
Cheers!
Wally made a suit out of cubicle fabric, but made a tie instead of a mask.
Wait, how can the whole Universe still exist, I thought the Galaxy in Fantabulous Wonderment went all third impact and ceased to exist in form? How did they get around that general ending?
22:16 to 22:21 If Yahtzee ever has a daughter, I hope shes like her :)
32:00 is that kimblee???
I actually just watched the episode of Drown Out last night in where you mentioned doing this exact video. What a coincidence.
The last game "Phone" is actually pretty cool, and i think it's the best looking game by yahtzee i've seen.
Would you consider making a spiritual succesor of it?
couldn't you pickup the vase and fill it up with the flow number? and then pour it on the wire?
Honestly I would have loved Cell to be finished, that final bit was fucking great.
Broken Boughs actually seems promising.
Why did you not ask how big the empire is?! NOW WE'LL NEVER KNOW!Also, Phone looks great.
That Cell/Phone game is so promessing....some really nice ideas there. I buy it XD
I looked it up. Bestuurder means Warden (among other things) *plays dramatic music*
Yep, I'm joining the massive campaign for a full length version of Cell to be made
soundless mountain and lone survivor are both by the same guy actually!
