    "COMPRESSED AIR! Yes. scientists in my century had begun research into this type of weapon..." His century? The first mechanical airguns date back at least to the 16th century. Then, as now, military-power air rifles were recognized as an effective weapon which is unnecessarily expensive because of the high quality of pressure vessels and fittings required...
    Actually, the hero's not the brightest bulb. Never mind, that explains that.

    • @hikerwolfspaine8200
      @hikerwolfspaine8200 9 лет назад

      +nopushbutton All you really need is a rapidly expanding gas to launch something really fast. Compressed air is easily renewable compared to its counterpart gunpowder. Maybe someday we'll have better ways of storing energy and compressing air and can have deadly air compression based ballistic weapons.

    • @nopushbutton
      @nopushbutton 9 лет назад

      Hiker Wolfspaine Well, as I said, we've had the technology for high-powered airguns for a long time. The thing is that alternative technologies (e.g. airguns, centrifuge based weapons, magnetic or electrical propulsion, etc), when compared to our current cartridge-contained explosively propelled bullets, would cost too much to develop into a modern human-portable system considering that the end result would be something of about the same effectiveness as our current guns, and would require major changes to military infrastructure & training.
      It is, however, plausible that people without those particular institutions in place (like, say, an alien civilization) would develop a different technology first. Major changes in the situations where gunfighting takes place could also make these technologies more appealing-for example, if a lot of gunfights took place in space or in an unoxygenated atmosphere, normal explosive propellants would not work.

    • @D0nCed
      @D0nCed 8 лет назад +2

      +nopushbutton yes they would. Gun powder contains its own oxygen. And in bullets there's even a bit of air for improved ignition

  • @satqur

    Calling the American version of the first Harry Potter book "Sorcerer's Stone" was J.K. Rowling's idea IIRC, because she didn't think American kids would buy a book with the word philosopher in the title. Which seems kinda shitty on her part tbh.
    Also, there was already an X-Men cartoon in the US called X-Men: Evolution, and they probably didn't want people to get the gum flavor confused with the cartoon. And wasn't the gum called Mutant in Australia anyway?
    But yeah, we do tend to have the worst box-art.

Which raises sort of a chicken-egg question: Is the insultingly base US box art for things like Heavy Rain a result of low standards among Americans, or is it a result of European marketers simply assuming that Americans have base, uncultured standards?

    i think i said "lol" aloud once, and immediately after doing so realized my mistake. i then proceeded to get a chopping board from the kitchen, lock myself into my room and bat myself over the head with it for half an hour. i never said it aloud again.

    Yes! Thankyou for knowing what Little Big Adventure is.
    When they were talking about french games, i was yelling at my monitor "LBA!"
    So underrated.

    For a French game, the art style sure borrows heavily from German Expressionism, what with all the skewed shapes and architecture, and stark shadows in the background.

  • @randomsamno9

    The whole box art thing is linked to that capitalist mentality in the US that everything is marketable and must be viewed as such. Another example of rebranding in the US is the film Witchfinder General, which was called Conqueror Worm in the US because Vincent Price films sold better if they had an Edgar Alan Poe link to them. The Witchfinder General itself is not linked in any way to Edgar Alan Poe, so once again it was purely a marketing strategy.

    As an American I must say, I am confused as fuck about why they insist on changing the names of things for no reason whatsoever. Staying on the subject of Delphi they changed the name of "Another World" to "Out of This World". I mean WHY? That's not even different in any meaningful way.

    • @ThePublicDominion
      @ThePublicDominion 10 лет назад +4

      A year later, but I know the answer so I might as well respond. It was changed because there was (possibly still is) an American soap opera entitled Another World, so the game was marketed as Out of This World to avoid copyright issues. Personally I think Out of This World is the better title anyway.

    I think I'm late to the party but, the text on the screen shot (USE lance on monk's habit. Well, it really seems to be fancy dress time!) NEEDS to be a T-shirt....or at least a bumper sticker :D
    Bravo Yahtzee.

    This adventure game has illogic puzzles like many others, but it's worth playing it with a walk-through (or watch this video). The graphics, also the characters and their animations are great for the year it was released.

    The Philosopher's Stone to Sorcerer's Stone subtitle change to Harry Potter one had to do with like, whiskey, or something. It's dumb...I think the censors at the time in the U.S. (the 90s) were still stuck up snobs of the century.
    "Thanks, I REALLY needed that censorship. God forbid it said *Philosopher's* Stone in a book about wizards and all that! Anyways, who wants to watch Robocop on VHS? I'm going by Blockbuster later today."
