Actors You Never Knew Were Australian REACTION
This was another interesting video to watch. Australia really is stacked with amazing talent whether it is acting or singing. Tell me who your favourite Australian actor/actress is.
Australia~ Yeah we go alright 👍😉
Yeah Kate has an 'educated' Aussie accent.
Fave Aussie singer is a real hard one.
Farnham for voice, with Barnsey up there,Jon English,Billy Thorpe.
Richard Clapton for singer songwriter. & Paul Kelly.
Band..Cold Chisel, Australian Crawl.
VIKINGS..yep it's a great story & watch👍
Didn't know he was an Aussie till after I'd watched it.
Watch it for sure! Binge it! 😄
🍻🍻 cobber.
✌️
Hugh Jackman by a mile. Apart from his acting abilities, he puts on one hell of a live show ❤️
Cate is brilliant. I was so fortunate to be a stand in for an American actor who was late on set so we ran through the scene sitting next to Cate looking straight at me for 5 minutes. Surreal to say the least as I adore her as an actress. Yes, her eyes are amazing. Love struck. Me, not her. :)
Mel Gibson is an American actor, that Australia adopted as one of their own. Born in Peekskill, New York, Gibson moved with his parents to Sydney, Australia, when he was 12 years old. He returned to the US in the 1980s when he was in his 20s, to pursue his acting career.
Over the years I loved Jack Thompson and Bryan Brown, for their true Australian portrails and longevity as Toni Collette , Guy Pearce and Anthony LaPaglia have shown their versatility. Of course there are too many to name that have brilliant talent and were snapped up for years by Hollywood 🤭 and why not, they are real and professional. Russell Crowe and Chris Hemsworth have shown they are a force to be reckoned with also. Not to be upstaged by the brilliance of one's already mentioned here.
A few more - Toni Collette, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush.
Rusty is actually a kiwi
Russell Crowe is New Zealand, but that’s okay because the world thinks his Australian, and Russell himself decided to become a permanent resident of Australia so he is ours now for sure
@@lesliedavis2185 Not any more. He's adopted Australia.
All excellent actors. I'm happy to claim Russell as an honourary Aussie. Rachel Griffiths is another that many people overseas probably think is American.
@@michaeldudgeon I actually just looked it up, Russell Crowe emigrated with his family when he was 4 years old. I think we could call him Australian now 😊
Really surprised to see the following excluded:
- Chris and Liam Hemsworth
- Eric Bana
- Mel Gibson
- Heath Ledger
- Naomi Watts
- Hugo Weaving
- Guy Pierce
Tony Colette, Isabel Lucas
@@editashton1179
Yvonne Strahvoski, Anna Torv
@@shawnbenson7696 Magda Szubansky,Paul Hogan.I think Melissa George is also Aussie
its about people they dont know as aussies
Mel Gibson is actually American, Born there Lived here moved back to America his home country.
Noah Taylor, Ben Mendelsohn two very underrated actors with long Hollywood careers
One that they always seem to miss is Hugo Weaving who played Mr Smith in the Matrix movies and Elrond in Lord of the Rings. Another amazing actor!
Totally underrated I think. I still love him in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Hacksaw Ridge, Bangkok Hilton, Bodyline Proof plus voice overs for Babe and tons more under his belt. He's a very versatile actor.
Hugo is actually English, born in Nigeria. Family went back to England before moving to Australia. But yeah he has spent the majority of his life in Australia.
@@louisekindred0059 I find it hard sometimes watching him in serious roles and taking him seriously. Can remember him in Priscilla all too well.
@@theghost6412 Yeah I know what you mean. After Priscilla even I have trouble with him in straight roles .
2 brothers that always stun people when they learn they are Aussie are Anthony and Johnathan LaPaglia. A South Australian family now living in America.
Errol Flynn is actually from Tasmania!! 😁👍 Also missed are Anthony LaPaglia, Bryan Brown, Hugo Weaving, Ben Mendelson, Sam Worthington, Chips Rafferty, Peter Finch, Rod Taylor, Jackie Weaver, Rebel Wilson, Ruby Rose, Etc!! Yes, don't forget Heath Ledger! 😪
rebel can go away . shes not talented nor funny
I almost forgot.Radha Mitchell (Man on fire and Pitch black)and Rachel Griffith.
Mel Gibson is actually American born and moved to Australia when he was 12. I suppose he can be called Australian to a point considering his adult life started in Australia and his training was all done in Australia as well.
It’s safe to say the world refers to him as Australian anyway. He is iconic as mad max
I miss the days when he had an Aussie accent.
I thought Gibson was kiwi borne & moved to OZ a age 4 or 5.
Apparel my misunderstanding
@@stanleywiggins5047 You might be thinking of Russell Crowe? His family moved from NZ when he was 4 years old.
It was the Americans who started calling him Australian lol. And so did Mel Gibson. Australians didn't really care either way.
Cate Blanchett is a brilliant actress, she can do so many different accents convincingly as a range of movie genres from Carol to Hela in Ragnarok. Margot Robbie as well, she was amazing in The Wolf of Wall Street, her Brooklyn accent was so spot on that Americans were convinced she was a NY native.
I love Margot Robbie, But Cate Blanchett is Australia’s answer to Meryl Streep. She can do any accent, is super smart and super classy!
There are three main accents in Australia: broad, general and cultivated. When Kate Blanchett (educated in private schools) speaks in her original Aussie accent it's the cultivated one, with many similarities to British RP/Received Pronunciation, though some distinctive Aussie vowel sounds are faintly detectable. Anyway, I guess that's one reason she's so good at sounding English, although with her talent and brilliance she could no doubt still pull it off very well if her usual Aussie accent had been general or even broad.
Saved me saying all that👍😄
Cate went to MLC Kew and I did too
Right on
Hugh Jackman had great success playing Curly in Oklahoma at the Royal National Theatre, London, before his screen career took off. My favourite Aussie actors are Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette.
Julian McMahon was in Charmed and most recently a lead character in FBI Most Wanted. His father was the Australian Prime Minister in the early 1970s
He was also in Nip/Tuck, Premonition with Sandra Bullock.
Nice pickup
There are so many more actors that are Australian, even during the golden age of Hollywood e.g. Errol Flynn and Peter Finch. Peter Finch and Heath Ledger (another Aussie actor) are the only actors to win a posthumous Oscar.
Errol Flynn was Aussie?! I had no idea! 😮
@@Erizedd yes indeed. He was born in Tasmania.
@@Erizedd There is a classic Aussie song about him : ruclips.net/video/rpxgn01rwjE/видео.html&ab_channel=AustralianCrawl
Rod Taylor and Ron Randell.
Michael Pate (who played many native Americans in the 40s and 50s.) Lana Cantrell was a singer, Helen Reddy.
@@cgkennedy I don’t know how widely known Lana Cantrell was known, but certainly Helen Reddy immortalised herself by releasing the most famous song of women’s liberation - I Am Woman.
They're wrong about never seeing Rose Burn with an Aussie Accent. Rose Burn has an Australian accent in the Australian movie two hands. Also starring Heath Ledger and Brian Brown. Excellent movie.
Sam Worthington from Avatar is an Aussie. And of course the late great Heath Ledger. Mel Gibson was born in America and came to Australia when he was 12.
Toni Colette is my favourite Aussie actor. She is a phenomenal in everything she touches. She should’ve won an Oscar for hereditary
Eww she is cringe af.
@@FranklyAussie okay
My God so many : David Wenham( LOTR ) , Magda Subanski ( Babe) Jack Thompson ( Star Wars) Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One) Noah Taylor( Edge of Tomorrow)
Surprised that Simon Baker (the Mentalist, the Guardian) never seems to make it onto these lists, but I'm fairly certain he isn't universally thought of as being Australian.
Did you know that Eric Bana (Hanna's Father) was another Aussie in Hanna. Show check out his filmography..bigger than most others in this list
This video didn’t cover Anthony and Jonathan LaPaglia, Poppy Montgomery, Anna Torv, Daniel Lessing, Naomi Watts, Helene Joy, Geoffrey Rush, Olivia Newton-John, Eric Bana, Rebel Wilson, Chris, Luke and Liam Hemsworth, Simon Baker, John Noble, Guy Pearce, Isla Fisher, David Wenham, Ryan Kwanten, Bryan Brown, Errol Flynn, and Jesse Spencer, just to name a few!
Peta Wilson
Heath Ledger
Jackie Weaver, Guy Pearce,
Hugh Jackman starred in the Broadway musical "The Boy from Oz" based on the life and music of Peter Allen which ran for a year (2003 - 2004). He then embarked on a tour to Peru and Australia.
Rose Byrne was in the great Australian movie "Two Hands" with Heath Ledger, before going to America
You may already know but Heath ledger is also Aussie and was in an Australian movie with Rose Byrne called two hands, one of my favourite movies
Nicole is now married to another Aussie Country Music's Keith Urban and Mel Gibson was born in the states but grew up in Australia just a note if your ever watched Mad Max there is a beach scene if you look their are 2 people laying near the pier that is me and my girlfriend at the tie I think I was 15 or 16 no bullshit!
Keith Urban is another kiwi (Whangarei) who went to Australia.
The one you don't know was me . Yep me . I played a Bikie in the song "Leader of the pack" . A Chicago Gangster in Curtain Up , and the 7Th Cavalry Major of the Fort in Calamity Jane. I Just have to travel further and get noticed . further than my local Town Hall stage
Anthony LaPaglia
One Aussie actor that totally fooled me was Damon Herrion who played Dewey Crowe in the series Justified.
Ha, had a big teenage crush on Rose Byrne after seeing her in a 1999 Aussie crime/black comedy called Two Hands. Stared along side Heath Ledger and is an awesome movie with a similar vibe to Guy Richie's Snatch.
Some of my favourites that these lists forget: Jai Courtney (Divergent series, A Good Day to Die Hard, etc.), Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Eric Bana (Hulk), Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck, Charmed; also the son of a former Prime Minister), and so many others.
Richard Roxburgh is a class act
Heath ledger!?!?
What about Toni Collette! Bloody brilliant actress and does an astonishing American accent.
Love your work. Cheers from Adelaide, South Australia
May I say one name ….. Hemsworth
You may!
Though your reason may may be optic 😄
Good blokes👍🇦🇺
Oh yeah, how could we forget him!
Errol Flynn
Guy Pierce
Simon Baker
Rod Taylor
Peter Finch
Heath Ledger
Just to name a few
George Lazenby - James Bond in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'
My favourites are Eric Bana, Heath Ledger, and Guy Pierce who comes from my city of Geelong in Victoria, Australia
Home and Away, neighbours, blue healers, and younger actors blue water high, h2o amd mako mermaids. The standard TV shows for Australian actors.
You could have do the 1st 100 You never knew were Australian. So many missed.
Hugh Jackman started in musicals and theatre. His first dramatic role was in the movie, "Erskinville Kings" which is available on Netflix. It was this movie which garnered him a lot of attention in dramatic roles. A very young Joel Edgerton also stars in this movie.
Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA - Mel is American, he lived here and now back in his home country.
John Jarrett tis the best.... everythin from playschool to wolf creek.... cant beat that... not even heard of most of the ones u mentioned
I went to school with Jacinda Barrett, she started off modelling then moved onto acting. She was in Brigitte Jones Diary - Edge of reason, Poseidon (remake with Kurt Russell) Ladder 49 with John Travolta and was on Suits with her husband Gabriel Macht. She pursued her dreams and succeeded, and she really is lovely person 💕
Yes, Jacinda is a lovely person. I spent a few hours with her at her parent’s home in Brisbane in 2006. She was very down-to-earth and girl-next-door type. And she was very polite, showing strong interest in everything we talked about. She had only recently married her husband, and had about 6 movies on her plate. Her main concern was that the heavy workload was interfering with her plans to have a family. The following year she had her first child and since then has cut back greatly on her work to concentrate on her family. I also remember talking to her on the phone for about 20 minutes when she was in Rome for the premier on one of her movies. It was just general chit-chat about our families, but when we hung up, I remember thinking how lovely she is. Not well known, but certainly one of our treasures.
@@Donizen1 oh that's cool. I grew up around the corner from her in Jindalee and our mum's played squash. I'm so happy for her to achieve her goals and still be grounded. My daughter loves acting so I told her about Jacinda as an example of it can be done
@@annabanana7071 Another interesting thing Jacinda mentioned was playing the wife of a fireman in Ladder 49 hit home to her as her father was a fireman and in the back of her mind growing up, there was always the thought that he may not come home. In the movie, her husband did die in a fire. She was able to absorb herself in the role due to her childhood fear. It is good to watch that movie again with that in mind.
Matt ,I made a suggestion for you to check out 2 Ozzie comedians, Norman Gunston interviews, and Aunty Jack 😅
Australia~ Yeah we go alright 👍😉
Yeah Kate has an 'educated' Aussie accent.
VIKINGS..yep it's a great story & watch👍 Didn't know he was an Aussie till after I'd watched it.
Watch it for sure! Binge it! 😄
🍻🍻 Mat
✌️
It's called 'cultivated' not 'educated'
Aussie actors been making it big for a long time in Hollywood, Errol Flynn, Michael Pate, George Lazenby...more but I can't remember off the top of my head
And Rod Taylor and Peter Finch
Mel married an Adelaide nurse and had his many kids before leaving her, he lived I Adelaide, specifically unley, and they always mention it when that house goes on sale
What about an early one. Dame Judith Anderson. She played Mrs Danvers in Rebecca.
Travis Fimmell 💕
Home and Away and Neighbours are the shows that most actors want to be in as its a stepping stone to greater things
Cate Blanchet is amazing in "Little Fish", which is an underrated wonderful little film, with a great script, and all actors nailing their parts. She is even better than Meryl Streep and can genuinely nail any role. Plus, she is a really nice person. I'm astonished you didn't know she and Nicole Kidman are Australian. While Mel Gibson grew up Australian and identified as such, he was born in the USA. Isla Fisher - whose parents are Scottish, but she was born in Oman, is Australian to the bone. She is Sasha Baron Cohen's wife and also started in Home and Away, but has some decent film credits to her name. Luke, Chris and Liam Hemsworth, Geoffrey Rush, Eric Bana (the original Hulk), Russel Crowe, Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Sam Worthington, Dacre Montgomery (Billy Hargrove from Strager Things), Devon Terrel (from Cursed), Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, Guy Pearce, Anthony LaPaglia, Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians), And a plethora of others. There was also a very famous police series actor in the UK for years who was actually Australian. His name escapes me now. He was an older man, and returned to Oz later in life and acted here for a bit. I wish I could remember which series or his name. Even the Brits thought he was British.
good thumbprint
I think you maybe referring to Rod Taylor, who starred in the original Time Machine, among many other Hollywood movies. The series may have been called something like Hong Kong?
@@joycie014 Yes in his day Rod was "hot property" in Hollywood
Ian Bliss…played Bane, the villain in Matrix.
I love the movie Hannah. Her father was played by Eric Bana, another Aussie,
Joel Edgerton? Had no idea. Joel and Jason Clark were in the same movie Zero Dark Thirty though the pair were not in any of the same scenes (as best as I remember)
What about the Hemsworth brothers? Can’t believe they didn’t make this list?!
Mate if you get the chance to watch Vikings watch it, i thought it was a real good show. But if you do get a chance just have a look can't hurt.
You will hear Rose Byrne use her Australian accent on film. Watch her in Bad Neighbours 2...Aussie accent all the way.
If you're going to talk during the video PAUSE THE BLOODY THING FIRST
Everyone always talks about Hugh Jackman, but I never hear anyone say anything about regular sized Ackman
We have so much talent as does New Zealand . We have also invented some pretty cool stuff too, eg. the blackbox
Their is a fantastic Aussie who lives in Thailand as well.
Chris (plays Thor) and Liam hemsworth are Australian too
My neice and nephew both do drama stuff. They both had to work on american accents from their early teens.
You should watch interviews of Cate, she is absolutely hilarious!
I'm Australian and I recognise only 6 of them and one of those is from very short vids on youtube.
Have a look at Vikings if ya can get it mate. Ya won't be dissapointed Matt.
Hugh Jackman is a "triple threat", he acts, sings and dances.. (and is good looking, sucks to be him!)
Guy Pearce, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Worthington , there are heaps more.
Jason Clarke, Zero Dark Thirty. Correct.
Check out ,interviews by Norman Gunston particularly interview with Shirley Corruthers, also just check out Auntie Jack ,you will have a laugh
Have alook at cate blanchet on a tv show called RED FACES where she first started her televion carreer
Met Travis Fimmel at a pub in Brisbane a few weeks ago. Really great guy from what I could gather. Had no idea who he was until a woman (I’m pretty sure she was due a change in underwear, she was EXCITED) told me who he was.
lol
Elizabeth debecki , the crown as princess di, even though she trash talks Australia now
Heath Ledger is my favourite actor but he is just one of many
Poppy Montgomery
Yeah, it is an irony that Aussies can do accents great, but almost no one can do a perfect Aussie or Kiwi accent. I throw in the Kiwi accent because of Star Wars, because Omega and Emerie Karr in "The Bad Batch" are voiced by actual Kiwi voice actors. The male clones are voiced by an American and I can hear it, as I am sensitive to accents, especially my own and Kiwi. A fake Aussie or Kiwi accent hit my audio uncanny valley, and while the Kiwi accent hit it as well, it hits it as being "Not mine, but a true accent".
Actually, on Star Wars, there are a lot of Aussie and Kiwi peoples in it, due to Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were filmed in Australia, and thus got a lot of both playing secondary and background roles. The most noted of which, besides the mention of Joel Edgerton, is Temuera Morrison playing Jango Fett, his face on the Clones, and recently Boba Fett.
Rose Byrne - played one of Padmé's handmaidens, Dormé. Very much a background role.
One person I doubt anyone doesn't know is Aussie is Chris Hemsworth, because outside roles, he doesn't hide his accent any.
Now as an aside, I hold the best non-Aussie to do an Aussie accent is Robert Downey Jr. I don't actually recall which movie (it's not Tropic Thunder), but I have seen clips of it and the accent is perfect (I have also seen comment section debate and one person opined that the accent was a Tasmanian circa Launceston accent specifically.
James Cromwell always gets forgotten as well. 🐨🐨
James Cromwell is American.

Cary Grant, Errol Flynn.
The first time I watched Cate Blanchett, she was being a clown on ‘Red Faces’.

Errol Flynn 🇭🇲
We have heaps more than just those. Cate is always coming home and she has a huge library of films she has been in. They asked Cate to come and be here charge of what when on at the Sydney Opera House for three years. Cate was here and she did a great job plus she kept making movies. Nicole is underrated too for her body of work.
She knew nothing about her divorce from Tom Cruise. She thought they were happy but Scientology reminded Tom he only had two weeks left of ten years and Nicole could take half of what he owned. She didn’t need any of his money. She was 12 weeks pregnant with his child when he told her and she lost that baby. Nicole’s Mother and Sister had to come and take her home because he nearly destroyed her. I have never watched anything he made after that. It must have killed him when she won an Oscar and he still doesn’t have one. She has also been nominated for them many times more than he has. So sad for him.
Toni Collette is great
Take a look at Ragnar Rothbrook (Travis Fimmel) when he was a model. (Prepare yourself ladies) 😲😲😲😲😲
Peter Finch, Errol Flynn,
chris hemsworth?!?!?
Nicole refused to join scientology. Split up with Tom Cruise after Eyes Wide Shut.
I love Toni Collette. I personally think she is the best Aussie export to the US, but sadly she's not getting the recognition she deserves.
Errol Flynn is the greatest, don’t be so shy!
Ironic that you mentioned Mel Gibson who is actually American. He was born in America and moved to Australia with his family when he was about 12 (?). Yes he spent his teen years and early adult life in Australia where he learned his acting and started his acting career before moving back to America and becoming a household name. His native accent is actually American, but naturally he has an Aussie tinge and can switch easily, having spent many of his formative years in Australia.
Technically Mel Gibson is American born Australian arriving in Australia at age 12.
That’s true, however from his iconic role as mad max and him starting his career off in Australia, the world refers to him as being Australian, same with Russell Crowe, his kiwi but the world and even Russell Crowe himself refers as being Australian
@@michaeldudgeon I think he has spent more time in the US than in Australia.
@@dianacasey6002 yeah that’s probably true, I still think it’s widely believed by the world he is Australian, I could of sworn I saw an interview with him saying he considers himself both Australian and American but maybe I’m wrong
It's interesting you didn't know Keith Urban is Aussie as he's actually married to Nicole Kidman.
They missed Errol Flynn
