I'm seeing lots of people saying they're now switching to this note app from others, especially Obsidian. Capacities is like a cross between Notion and note apps like Logseq, Obsidian and Reflect. A little similar to Anytype which I reviewed a few weeks ago. In this video, I talk about what you can do with Capacities and why many people are choosing to switch to it.

5:49 Why people are switching from Obsidian to Capacities
Some of the links above are affiliate links because they help me survice as a creator! Thank you so much for your help and I really appreciate your support :)
What people are forgetting is if you keep jumping between applications, that’s taking away from time and energy you could use for creating and learning.
yeah, unless there's an actually significant upgrade, stick to a major player that you expect to stay around in the game
Learning how to set up Obsidian is such a drag. Every day something new brakes and it takes hours of troubleshooting to rebuild the code anew because some update messed up the plugins again. I spent 95% of my time in Obsidian setting it up, rather than actually using it. I'd still stick to Obsidian as I'd like to own the data and all that, but man is it a drag to use for anything useful.
ty I'll keep in notion @@Stuck313
That's the problem with productivity porn now...there is always a new app coming up trying to solve problems with current apps, it's a new shiny object.
@@Stuck313 maybe you’re doing too much tinkering? What are you using obsidian for?
For many of us, we prefer our notes -- our "second brain" -- to be fully owned and managed by ourselves, rather than by a corporate entity. This removes the risk of our data being subject to the whims of the market and developers in terms of access, features, and cost. This is probably a good alternative for the average person, but I can't see most true users of Obsidian actually wanting to switch.
Does Obsidian used to be free and open-source?
I can't find anything about this anywhere, but i'm pretty sure that the first time i've accessed Obsidian's site it was presented as an open-source software which had its back-end part mainly made by an asian guy while the front was made by an asian girl.
That would make it a trustable place to put your personal things, but why do you think so about a proprietary software like it is right now?
Yes this is the main appeal of Obsidian for me. Don't see myself leaving for anything else, especially a platform.
@@guilhermeg.4589 The app isn't open source, but the files are made in plain text, so they are not locked away in a database, uploaded to the cloud (unless you do it yourself) or using a strange syntax, it's a rendering engine and editor for markdown files that can be ported to whatever tool comes next should Obsidian fall out of favor.
@@guilhermeg.4589 Same here, I also thought Obsidian was open-source the first time I used it (around 3 years ago). But I can't find anything about that now.
@@guilhermeg.4589as the files generated by Obsidian are all in .md and are created locally (with the option to put them in the cloud/sync or not), we can simply change these files later with any text editor, even if Obsidian goes out of business for some reason.
I value Privacy. So, Obsidian is much better than capacities.
Don't lie to people just for the sake of some views. Nobody is leaving obsidian. Obsidian provides long term stability with unlimited features with unlimited tweaking. Obsidian is most secure and you own everything and also it is completely free. These new apps are just shinny new things which loses their shine in few days when people realise the whole picture.
Ok Rajesh
I did leave obsidian, to complicated and hard to maintain
I leaved Obsidian for Scrintal.
Plenty are leaving for Joplin, Logseq, we've Capacities I just learned from him, as well as Anytype. Capacities has a much more robust organisation system, and the graph view is more elaborate. Anytype looks great, too. I've used Obsidian and, and it's cool, but no blocks, and the plug-ins for blocks doesn't work too well. Don't watch then. You're the one lying. 😂🤡💩💀
@@ReligionAndMaterialismDebunked You can clearly see I got 130 positive votes and only 4 negative. So the ratio of people leaving obsidian is very few. Normally any kind of best app could have this kind of churn rate. This doesn't say that everyone is leaving obsidian. Understand mathematics and then you will understand how to conclude statements.
I think the main objective of note taking apps must be to take notes and not internet connection. Obsidian and logseq is an epitome of such tools because their priority is the complete ownership of data and the ability to use the tool without the internet connection be it woods or airplane which is more private and secure. Anytype too again focuses on "offline first" and then backup the notes to the node(cloud) when there's internet connection. These tools really prioritise note taking and not the need for internet connection just to take a simple note.
I agree with this.
Exactly! This is why I will stay with Obsidian. And is also already have a great mobile app that actually works.
@@christerjohanzzon And the plugins... text generator and whisper are enough to surpass all notetaking apps in my opinion
If I am tired of customization, I dont. Why is it a problem? It is a privilege to customize. OMG I wanna give a thousand downvotes to this for wasting my time
100% and this is the reason why I also stick with obsidian
Nobody has left obsidian and nobody will. It’s the best product right now . Totally in love with it.
Yep!
This video did not age well 🤣
He said that while downloading his 200th plugin in obsidian cuz the app supports nothing natively
@@musicaddict9058be thankful that it is not bloated like everything else
tbh obsidian is getting on my nerves in my use case. I use it take notes in school and to scan documents like assignments, I have to scan it in another app, screenshot it and then paste it in obsidian which is a pain in the a$$
I don't think storing images in obsidian is that good cuz of indexing each time I open it
@@je4a301
Honestly, I don't know many persons who left Obsidian.
No tool is perfect but it's continiously improving updates after updates with new features (and plenty of community plugins available), while still remaining free, interroperable (markdown format), synchronizable and privacy respectful (local storage with the freedom to sync with any sync software). Another big advantage of Obsidian for me is that it does not force me to follow a specific way to organize your notes unlike many other apps.
There are not a lot of apps offering all these advantages ...
this guy wanted a hook that shatters some realities 🤣
Yeah, I was already expecting this to be a clickbait title.
Although I did hope that this could be an offline version of Notion - as otherwise, the vast majority of Obisidan users wouldn't even have bothered taking a deeper look.
But alas, 40 seconds in and it turns out that this is yet another cloud-based service that locks your second brain into proprietary servers.
@@LinkEX About an offline version of Notion, there is an app called Anytype that looks like very similar to Notion and is offline.
I did not take a closer look, but if you don't already know it, it may interest you.
whats the app you are using for sync obsidian
As many other commenters have already pointed out
There's no way Obsidian people like me would leave Obsidian to this Capacities app
Obsidian have many advantages and features out of all the other note taking apps key important one is the private data ownership of data with key features from many popular note taking apps RoamResearch (Second brain of linking notes) to Notions integrated features of All in one note taking that's the reason why Obsidian started to begin with
Capacities entire design language from the start is made for the Apple people aka people who have preference of aesthetical simplicity which is seen on several of your video chapters (Graph view, Page Layout, Gallery and Table views etc) over functional complexity and these are entirely two different approach and target for app user customers not even the same
Even the paid model is a exact copy of Apple centric app AI Assistant and AI chat which can be used freely if you know how to sort out the hugging face extension in Obsidian
Video title is very click baity with no reason to even exist cuz the target user of Obsidian and this app Capacities are very different even if they look similar in a glance
If vid was titled new simplified obsidian or obsidian alternative both neutral titles would be much better than this type of click baits also shows need further research or writing change from the creator
I don't see how this app is even remotely comparable to Obsidian. Obsidian is a notes app that stores your information locally and syncs using E2EE. Capacities does not have these features or privacy protections. From what I can tell, like Notion, you don't really "own" your information in this app. That is a huge concern for me.
Yep. It's not even comparable. Obsidian is completely free and can be synced either with subscription or 3rd party tools of your choice. Any online-only alternative is not "just worse", it's completely unusable.
Have you tried SiYuan notes, it's everything Obsidian + Everything I needed on top of it, sad that not many people know about it .
woah wwhat do you mean by we dnt own our information while using notion ? i am an obsidian user myself bt i am curious
@@MODEST500 it's on the cloud instead of your device
@@DrQuestern no notion is not on the cloud i can still use it offline i mean ? btw just heard about logsec ,sad its such a beautiful looking app but no folder mode, still prefer obsidian
obsidians absolute MASSIVE ADVANTAGE is
+ It stores its information on your device and not in some sort of internet cloud thingy.
+ It has as much storage as your Device is. if your PC has 1 terabyte storage, your obsidian has 1 Terabyte storage.
+ It doesn't require the internet to get access to your files. its fully Offline app. all you need is Charge your PC.
+ It is a FREE APP. No monthly subscriptions etc.
as long as other note apps did not implement these features. Obsidian stand tall among any Note apps without any worry🤣🤣🗿🗿
Yes, let's not use applications where you can store information on an encrypted disk, synchronize between devices in any way, even through your personal git. Plus, you can edit files with regular vim. In favor of cloud-centric and closed-source apps that sell your content to third parties and train artificial intelligence
Kinda ironic posting this in YT, tho.
@@rheavictor7
There is no decent alternative to RUclips, they have a complete monopoly.
This video was Sponsored by Capacities.
Capacities is really cool, but for Long Term writing and privacy i still think Obsidian is much better
No one's leaving obsidian. This is the problem. The moment some new app comes in RUclipsrs hops on to that bandwagon 🤐
I recently got started with obsidian, but I'll not switch for tiny bits
Also, obsidian doesn't need internet to work with, and I can use 3rd party sync so, for it it's privacy + control, which is good enough for me to stay
3rd party sync, much privacy
@@Turned2Ice you know you can easily setup your own server using a rasberry pi and dedicate the task of uploading and downloading files, you can even find YT videos for it. 3rd party doesn't always means you have to use someone's services, you can use your own if you have the gears.
I like this app -- but I think in the end, it's a funnel towards a paid app. Obsidian splits the difference where it offers much of the core functionality for free and any of the advanced sync apps are available for a modest price. I believe that Obsidian -- more specifically the Obsidian developer community will walk anyt advantages this app offers down in short order.
The biggest drawback of this app is that u can not use on moblie for free plan , you need to switch to paid plan to use on mobile. also formatting is vary bad ,if you copy md file to paste in Capacities ,it will show badly
Not true. If you're in the apple ecosystem iCloud works fine.
For Android it's not as easy, but there are workarounds
Syncthing is your friend
One Chinese folk wisdom says: -If there is no advertising in the video, then this video is the advertising itself. (the text was translated using Google translator)
One big issue with me with capacities. Its not opensource meaning once they stop working in the future I would just go back to obsidian. They are built by a company not the community and because it is not opensource you will never know what they are doing with your notes.
Definitely, agree with you on that and Evernote is a great example, although they did not close down they sold their company to Bending Spoons and now many Evernoters are looking to alternatives because the direction Bending Spoons is going starting with the price increase. We need more open source note taking apps that fit most use cases.
Obsidian is free and allows users to own their own data
This is what makes Obsidian better, and in-contrast with defeated business models such as pay-walls ans cloud driven apps
Data entry friction is much higher for Capacities (which I love) than Obsidian. Obsidian is much better in allowing you to use a keyboard-focused workflow with customizable shortcuts for triggering actions (e.g., Specific note types and which folder they are created in). In that respect, I feel Obsidian remains the better overall app.
I don't see anyone from Obsidian leave to this app. Why this clickbaity title? Really misleading.
Privacy first => Obsidian 😊
I actually go back to Obsidian after tried out Capacities and some others app. the most deal breaker for me is when I copy markdown to Capacities, it's fine but I copy that to paste to others places and the format just broke down. And it's hard to copy the whole page to other places
Did you try heptabase Natalie ?
@@ARNBNDL Hi, I did saw Heptabase in product hunt but not yet try it. I think it's quite complex for my need right now. "Complexity" for me is key when looking for a Note app. I tried Notion (and still using it for some task) but it's too much function for just site down and write a note. Up to date, I'm using Obsidian (because of LYT of Nick Milo) and Logseg as quick capture thought
Had the same problem, really liked the look of Capacities though
Are people leaving Obsidian? I don't see it happening.
this video is an ad and he wants you to click on his afiliate link
Is there a way to list all the tasks I created in different notes? Like in a meeting, list that I should do X+Y+Z task by the 20th of december, and have a way to see all the tasks
The mobile app is in beta and costs 10€/month!
what is the privacy aspect? are the notes encrypted, or does Capacities team have access to my data?
YES WE DO in case your data lost
The problem with capacities
is you can't create table in a page
you also a notion user wanting a obsedian feel relation view>? hahah i wonder how we can pettition that to notion devs
Is there any quick capture functionality?
Personally, as a tablet user id prefer obsidian since its offline and local. Also, using a pen with handwriting recognition keyboards in obsidian along with excalidraw is something ive seen no other app have. Handwritten notes + text notes + tasks, kanban and other productive features already make obsidian an unrivaled app. Nothing comes close
The Ai Assistant can be replicated by the “smart connections” plugin which creates a vector space search embedding using OpenAI. You use your own API key and you know exactly what privacy terms apply. They don’t train on your data and you can exclude individual files from training. Much more private
But you have to pay for the API right?
@@pyr3x_ yes. However, openAI gives you $20 of free credit when you create a new account. That free credit is on your account for 2 or 3 months before it expires (regardless of if you use it or not). I pay on average $2 per month to use this using GPT3.5, but you are in total control of how much you use this or not.
I use it because it provides me with instant info retrieval as a student. It is a lifesaver since Obsidian's default search is really poor in comparison.
I have no doubt that there will be a locally powered llama equivalent sometime soon for more powerful computers, but for now this solution is worth ~$2 a month to me. And if it ever isnt, I can simply stop using it and it will not bill me
Obsidian really was the gateway to just using markdown files in nvim for me. The only thing I’m missing is excalidraw
00:03 Capacities is a popular note app with endless customization options.
01:00 There is no option to change the appearance.
01:53 The app allows users to add and manage web links and information about people.
02:49 Organize information with ease and use AI to clean up your email inbox
03:42 Samebox is a time-saving email management tool
04:36 The app allows you to organize information easily
05:29 AI chat feature is available on the paid plan
06:23 The app is fun and simple to use, but lacks some features and ease of information capturing.
does it work with PostgreSQL (e.g. CRUD)?
So, probably not the first person to think this. but it totally seems feasible to recreate this type of system in obsidian. Like down to the different dashboards. And page formats for. various objects. I think the only limitation is the integration with an email client. which admittedly is extremely cool. Has anyone had a similar thought or potentially even attempted to recreate this system yet?
I am not sure if i can make a switch. Obsidian is workinf well for me. I mean can we load our existing notes ?
Bulk upload is not a current feature but is said to be coming soon.
@@StevenMichels upload ? ok wait , so the app is online ? what ?
Obsidian notes are Markdown files. So yes. Their proposal is precisely this: a solution that is future-proof.
Obsidian users is there a way to do something like this 1:57 in obsidian? I searched for a while in plugins and other places, but couldn't find anything like it. I wanted to do this, but for a character not an actual person, and having a place made specifically to describe and even include photos seems to be really practical.
Did I see your plans about visiting Singapore?
I'm in love with Capacities. So simple to learn, Tags and Collections are superb. Searching for items is robust. Works well on desktop and IOS. This app is relatively new and the designers are very responsive.
How does it work well with iOS when the iOS is not even out yet?
Do you mean the web version on iOS?
I don't see the advantage. Is it the possibly slightly nicer formatting or something? I'm only about to try Obsidian for the first time, but on the surface the two apps seem incredibly similar.
Capacities is super polished for how old it is and the mobile app is the best I’ve used in the PKM realm… still in beta!
I really want to try the capacities app when is supposed to come out? How would you compare it to the obsidian app?
@@idarci7202its better, shame It doenst work offline yet
How do you know people are leaving obsidian? Any evidence?
I absolutely hate the fact that these apps are made using web technology. They're so demanding and consume all RAM. There's a code editor called Lite Xl which is made in Lua, It runs like butter on the oldest hardware and it looks so good and modern. Why the hell is everyone using JS with Electron????
次から次へとツールを探して試して彷徨ってるのは 果たして生産的なんですかね?
cmon bro this guy is advertisement youtuber who is only looking for views and money... this is why mrbeast is not losing his subscribers when picking the right companies
"The best is the an enemy of the good" - Obsidian is perfect for my needs
why is there no people/person in my option to change the content type ?
After seeing "Stored on encrypted servers. Your data is securely stored on encrypted servers in the EU." I understood it's another Notion, not an Obsidian =3
Don’t bother watching the entire video, Mobile version of Capacities costs you money. Saved you 7 mins… wished he cut to the chase instead of leaving this important detail to the end.
How much is it?
3:18 inknew a tool like this would become a reality anytime soon and lo behold it is here. Coz i knew that this problem existed and it was time someone would have made it .
This is basically what happens if Logseq and Anytype had a baby together. Obsidian can't even be compared to this because they are two different fields... (Obsidian for long form, non-outlining, traditional note taking, Logseq is for daily journalling and Anytype for objects with your favourite types). Honestly, I would say go for Anytype.
Why are u deceiving viewers? They are not the same. You are better off comparing this to notion.
Obsidian is as simple as you make it, it has excellent functionality without any plugins but that huge community is there to help you customize your use if you want/need it. I haven't really heard of this app before this video, so I haven't really seen people leaving Obsidian for it as you claim. If anything, the lack of onboarding in Obsidian is its weak-point, which they are working on, but would mean that people just simply don't make the effort to learn it, so if you said "users that never wanted to learn Obsidian are trying this instead", I might believe you.
How many are leaving? Where did you base your assumption? This is a very clickbaity title and video. And more often than not, youtubers who do this kind of thing are not very credible as they won't offer you genuine content and are just mouthpieces of whoever sponsors their video.
TLDW: no it doesn't have Obsidians core feature
its good its was ideal i did create anaccount but i cant create database inside a page from a database plus i cant add formula property
The app it's interesting, but the title it's kind a "bait", it's more than a pay promotion of the app devs, in what study or poll it's based the "affirmation" or ask the "question" of "people leaving obsidian"
Who's left Obsidian for this...? You're clearly making that up..
Hey, love you style. Can you tell me how you achieve that zoom in effect when you do screen recording. When I try that, it just gets blurry
i wish you gave some attention to tags and backlinks features if any - that Notion has but they don't seem to work well....
Cloud-only is a big no no after the privacy-invasion of the last few years
Nope, capacities did not replace Obsidian for me.
If there were so many people unhappy with Obsidian that they'd leave it for something like this there would be more videos about it. This is just made up to promote a product.
I like Shu introduce me much tools before, but seem too much ads now that I dont think people leave obsidian and logseq as that is most useful
Please tell me the best Android app for my second brain
"I've actually known capacities since last year" suuuuure 😏
I don't know... Obsidian still looks quite attractive to me and much simple and more things that can be done there. I guess Capacities does have some nice features but due to the risk of not fully owning my notes and the fact that I have to register to use the app, I guess those points detract me when app like Obsidian exists.
Thanks for the video. It looks nice and easy. But there are many advantages of Obsidian that you did not cover. You only covered the looks and functionality. But what about important things like does it store things on your local drive or is it all cloud based? Is it end to end encryption based? Is there are good community? And so on. I wish you had covered a lot more things than just the immediate bells and whistles. Also, as a new platform, will it survive in a market where Obsidian definately has firm roots?
Notebook and Pen are also fine!
😂
"People" are not leaving obsidian for this.
A handful of people and this guy turns it into an exodus
No people are not leaving Obsidian for this.
This is not even remotely comparable to obsidian.
I am not switching apps unless I own my data!
Tried it. Paid money for a few months. Not ready for prime time. I'm sticking with Obsidian. Also, the people doing their YT education lack charisma. I had a hard time staying awake long enough to really learn the app. But that's on me. Sort of.
I enjoyed your review. Thank you.
Obsidian or Logseq? And why?
The formatting part was something i always needed. Seems like i need to check this out asap
The problem of obsidian there is now LIVE PREVIEW MARKDOWN EDITOR
@@Bunkerniy_Gadenish what ? how is that a problem ?
@@MODEST500surprise, I've met a lot more people who have no idea of markdown and no free time to learn it because they have other stuff to do. So if you have to use markdown it's a definite dealbreaker.
Personally, I am quite tech-savvy, I can write a vba macro or build a computer or install an os or set up basic proxxmox and a few vms or build a basic home network with a few APs, poe, and stuff, including planning, procurement, and installation.
But I don't have time or desire to learn markup because in this day and age you can find solutions that offer normal formatting/tagging options.
So they perhaps should consider implementing those as an option, it's not rocket science
10 a month lumped in with all the other subscription services can be a lot, as many services require subscriptions
local = ownership = privacy = control
cloud = not the above + occasional internet problems
Sorry , no one is leaving Obsidian for This Note App period. Capacities are musrooms, will come bright and die before the sun goes down. do not compare online vs local. Please compare apple with apple not with oranges. Obsidian vs logseq makes sense..
Why are people fleeing RUclips due to _this_ flaw in the video titles? I've completely given up watching RUclips clips where 'this' in the title veils the central topic. Thumbs down, with extreme prejudice.
Interesting alternative to Notion. Capacities seems to be from Germany? So your Data are a little bit more save.
But Obsidian is totally "privacy first" I think and i never heard, that someone is leaving Obsidian.
looks like a mixture of notion and obsidian
This does not offer much more than Obsidian, and is not even local first.
In three months someone will come with a plugin that supports multiple object styles inside obsidian and that's it.
Please cite your source data that indicates people are switching to Capacities, else your title is merely a hook to get one to watch the video, I agree with the previous poster, I don't know of anyone who has switched. I'll stick with local storage options and a file format that's portable. I get that there is a free tier, but we've seen free evaporate. Hmmm, where's my source data on that?
So its just Notion?
Capabilities looks awesome but anytype is opensource! ❤
The title "why are people leaving Obsidian" seems click bait to me, I know a lot of ppl that use Obsidian and haven't left. I know this video a paid promotion so a catchy title brings ppl, so I know that the title probably means, cool app alternative, checked it out. I don't mind checking out new things at all, seems good.
I just dont like anytype export to PDF option, it makes it fully white and notes kind of unindeted u can say
Imagine leaving obsidian or any type of local based note taking app to use a pwa app.
Nope! I would keep my freedom free of charge.
Clocking a button to highlight or make formula doesn't replace the good old syntax typing for formatting 😊
Yeah, this isnt an Obsidian replacement. Maybe a Notion replacement. FOSS or bust.
Anytype and Obsidian are the only two because of offline and e2e tbh.
I prefer Anytype, but both are great.
True.
I heard Emacs was great too. Anytype is a proprietary format tho right? kind of a concern.
Waits for the end of the video to say there's no mobile app
PLS do a video about ANYTYPE. It's offline first and secure, your data is yours
I did one on Anytype a few months ago :)
It's cool but obsidian is my way to go. No app or tool will make you more productive. It's always just a tool so it depend which tool is easy to use and fit your demands.
For heptabase ok but capacities, whattt!

obsidian one love
I've seen ads that are more objective than this video.
