Tools like Mindmap and Infinite Canvas are very useful for organising large amounts of information. Now there is a new generation of note apps that combine these tools with bi-directional linking and flashcard. Most of them are young products and still round around the edges, but there's a lot of potential in them! If you've tried popular note-taking apps like Obsidian, Notion and Logseq already, these might be the next ones to try! Some of them are perfect for Zettelkasten method or atomic note-taking method.

I wish you'd explained the advantage or key features these offer compared to other note-taking apps - I don't really understand why someone would feel like switching to them or what makes them different to a standard notes app. They look really similar in functionality.

    • @AndresIbanezVasquez

Perhaps I can chip in. Coming from Evernote as a long time user (and now looking at some new alternatives) these "new" note taking apps (also called PKM apps) offer some innovative (altough some people might not find them useful) functionalities. I can only speak for Obsidian and Heptabase which are the ones that I have tested. Obsidian offers local storage which a lot of people understand as safety, since your data is not on the cloud but on your own PC, and it also offers backlinking functionalities where you can "connect" notes. You can also see a graph where you can see like a brain-like structure of all your thoughts. Apparently the "trend" now a days is for networking-thinking where people feel the need to connect thoughts and build a second brain in such a way that if you are writting a note, you can become aware that there is another note which is related and which might help you out in writting this new note. I see the value in this, but I think it is terribly hyped and overestimated, and people are wasting too much time on the planning and the structure and less on the making and the action (my case in point). Heptabase takes things a bit further in terms of innovation. For starters there are no folders to organize your notes (just like Roam Research, Reflect and many of the new network-thinking folder-less structure apps which are arising), all your notes (which they call cards) live in a card library. You can however "embedd" those notes/cards in multiple "whiteboards" (which could be projects, life areas etc) so you can access them from different places without actually having to search for them or drag them around. Also it has a clear mindmapping design, which I am still not sure how I feel about.
Comparing these to "standard" note-taking apps like Evernote (which has now added backlinks, and even AI search, which is a fancy way of saying that you can ask the app a question and it will search inside your notes for the answer, not as smart as a full-out AI like the one in Notion AI, TheBrain, Craft etc. but still nice and different from the traditional search), the traditional note taking apps still rely on folders and use a basic "dumping" methdology where you capture lots of notes and organize them in folders, without much emphasis on them being connected. The new generation of note taking apps are focusing more on folder-less structures where notes are connected between them creating a network of knowledge which is SUPPOSED to ressemble your actual brain, still not sure how I feel about this since I am still trying these apps out. So far having a lot of fun with the AI in some of these apps (currently testing Reflect app and TheBrain, they both offer AI), but I am still trying to see if I can make the transition into a folder-less and backlink-network-interconnected-2ndbrain structure. Hope this helps.

@@AndresIbanezVasquez I likked very much your comment, my friend! As you, I do also use Evernote for years, since Springpadit ended. I'm always looking for some new possibilities, but never gave up on Evernote. The same happens with Todoist, that I'm always looking for alternatives, but never find a better one.

if i may chime in on my undisputed champion in this space ~ anytype! my entire life is funneled through that app + nothing comes close to it b/c power is in databases + many note taking apps are documentation first, such as obsidian where the database aspect has been handled by a third-party plugin [dataview]
