Thanks for the clear instructions. I like how you go for the less fussy/easy option. My sort of knitting lol. I dont finish the last stitch of the square. I count this as the first stitch of the next square. Makes it even easier to start of the next one :) happy scrappy knitting everyone.
If you do every first stitch of every row with a knit as if to purl, you will create a row of vee's on each edge of your square, it is very neat looking, and it has the right amount of stitches for when you pick-up for your cast on edge.
This was so helpful - thank you! I especially loved your advice about knitting 5 squares in each direction to start. I like working projects in a “chunk” so this gives me a way to easily measure progress. I also use a crochet hook to get started in the corner, those first stitches are the hardest to pick up.

I am now on my 5th blanket following your instructions. 3 x 16 x16, 2 x 12 x 12 which is a great knee blanket size. Now the ends, I use the weavin Stephen (West) method to weave them in as I go saves such a lot of work. I go in the purl bumps when picking up sts as I find that easier and neater. Thank you so much for starting my mitred blanket addiction.

Hi Anna, I do apologise, I have only just seen your message. I like your tutorial because you show people what to do instead of just giving the verbal instructions. It's cooler weather here now, and I have returned to your video, I am just a little unsure in what direction to go ?
When my watch later videos ended, youtube started this video ... which was so funny because I'm sitting here knitting a Cozy Memories blanket out of all of my left over sock yarn. One tip for you. If you will slip the first stitch of every row knitwise and purl the last stitch of every row, you will have perfect stitches to pick up when you are ready to pick up for the sides. It's like the slipped stitches on the sides of the heel flap of socks to pick up for the gusset. Easy peasy and no guessing whatsoever.
Thanks Anna. I am using your tips to create my first blanket. I am not sure how to do the white border. I saw below in the comments you said to pick up along one edge at a time and knit 20 rows but what happens at the edges? How would you make them square? Any advice or even another video would be much appreciated! Or if anyone else can help. Would you cast on ?20 stitches (corresponding to the 20 rows) to make a mini mitred edge?
As a suggestion it would be better if you were to slip the first stitch as if to purl in the beginning of each row and every front and back row. This way you have a definite place to pick up stitches. It's done that way in knitting socks for the heel and heel flap. Other than that I understand this concept to create the blanket.
I am not sure if I understand you correctly. Do you mean you would like to ad the squares only to the right side until you have the width of the blanket you would like to have? If that’s the case then the answer is yes. After the first square you cast on half of the stitches of square two and pick up the second half of the stitches along the side of square one. Was that helpful?
@@annaknitter hello, thank you for your speedy reply. I would like to knit the blanket in columns. With the first square being at bottom left, adding squares on top of each other to the length I want. Then starting the second column also at the bottom, joining each new square to the first column (which will be to the left)as I work my way up. I am struggling to explain myself. Does this make sense? I am thinking it would be like making the long columns on the knitted Jelly Roll blanket.
@@helenoreillylong9497 ok now I understand. Yes you can do that. For that you have to pick up the stitches along the top side of the first square and cast on the other half of the stitches.
