Thank you for this tutorial. It is a great coincidence that I’ve been thinking about making a Mitered square blanket in honor of one of the lady’s from the Needlecrafters group I belong to, who recently passed away. One day she was determined to teach me how to make the Mitered square blanket, which was her favorite pattern for the blankets she donated to the veterans. I politely watched her instructions, but I didn’t think about making one at that time. Now I regret I didn’t start one immediately because I could have asked her questions if I had made mistakes. Now I know I can star one because here is your tutorial. Thank you again!
Thank you Jana. I knitted a blanket 5 years ago for my daughter from a surplus of sock wool and have knitted many more pairs of socks since for family and friends. So I now have another sock wool stash but didn't have the pattern written down to make another blanket. Thanks to you I now have the first three squares knitted to begin my next blanket project. 😍
This was exactly what I’ve been looking for !!! When I saw your blanket earlier I wanted to start one but didn’t know how. I’m still new at knitting so I haven’t made a blanket in knit before, only crochet. Now I won’t have any scrap bits to deal with as I do socks and hats ! Thank you so much !!!
Great tutorial...a couple years ago I found that my yarn drawer was overflowing with bits of baby yarn. I had been ruminating on just how to knit a mitered block, so after much experimenting, I managed to successfully use up all those bits by laying the squares in a layout like a log cabin quilt block which made the nicest baby afgan. All the baby yarn colors made it so cheerfull. Unfortunately, I neglected to take a picture before donating it, hopefully it is as loved as much as I loved the process.
Very interesting!. I have often wondered about the mitred square and now you have taught me. Thankyou. I hope to try this soon. Shield Bauer. Cape Town. South Africa
Thank you for this tutorial, I was trying to follow instructions for a mitered square blanket but I was struggling, after watching your tutorial I’m ready to start this blanket for my son.
Love your videos. I'd love to try this blanket but want to make it in stockinette. Thank you for the great instructions ...always! I learned a TON from you about sock knitting. thanks for that, too!
Thank you for this. I just resumed working on my mitered square blanket. I pick it up, work on it for a month, and then it goes into the UFO closet for a couple of years, by which time I've mostly forgotten the basics of getting a neat edge and raised decrease. Pretty sure I started it 12 years ago. The only thing I change is that on the back side, I purl that center stitch to get an even more distinct center line, but I watched five or six videos before I found yours, which is a perfect refresher of all of the steps, explained very clearly. Thank you!
I love these! I’m going to knit the Stella Quilt Cushion pattern, making it into a baby blanket and maybe other colors for a scarf one day. Great to familiarize myself with the method first!
Thanks for showing us how to attach the diamonds. I have began knitting one but it seems like it is taking forever. So it was nice to hear you are doing one diamond a day and it will take you awhile. Nice to know I will not be alone in this process. I love the look of your blanket. It looks what I call “old fashioned”. That’s my jam for sure. ❣️🧶
I sure wish I knew to use the CDD for the mitered center on my scrappy blanket. If I make another one, I will definitely use this stitch instead of ssk and k2tog. Another great video Jana!
Thank you so much, Jana….It’s been my project today. I’m using the Palette Yarn from Knit Picks. I have lots of it, and I think it will work out great! 🤗❤️🙋
Loved this. Just made a slight difference with the straight and finish of rows but it still has the chain edge. Slip first stitch knit wise and purl the last stitch.
I wish this was released before I started mine two years ago. I have a large number of separate blocks, now I need to know how to attach and then start doing it via this method... But I am really looking forward to begin putting it all together!
I don't think I can do it because of my eyesight is too little of yarn but I also don't have the equipment or the tools needed to do it but I did learn an awful lot and now I know and I have made minor squares and bigger and bigger yarn and it's been years but thanks I needed a refresher course and it really did help and the way you zoom in really helps since I'm legally blind in one eye totally blind the other when you zoom in and I got the camera I can really see what you were doing and what you're talkin about and it really does help once I get something in my heart and in my mind see the Lord then I can produce it with my hands I'm just learning to where I actually make stuff looks really good but I'm getting there well semi-good is good to me because I know the work I put into doing but I've made hats and scarves and such but not as good as you artist do but I'm getting there and takes a lot of practice a lot of yarn a lot of tears and a lot ofin a lot of projects and then just meet us keep on moving on that's what I'm doing right now I'm working on a hat and I'm working on a tank top first garment say a prayer for me I need help on that one but I'm knitting the back first and that's what they recommend I don't know how the construction is really going to work I've got the I've got the I got the directions with me how to make it but it's just trying to figure out how they wrote it down and what they exactly mean because they don't always put in everything and it really helps these videos to see here in the shown if that makes sense it's a three-way learning that really helps me God bless you and thank you so much Salome shalom
I've been wanting to make one of these for years. I do a alot of crocheting besides knitting and this is my latest foray back to knitting. You make excellent tutorials. Really nicely done. I struggled a little as I hold my yarn continental style and that first stitch was a little wonky at first but worked out lovely. Please do more and more tutorials and tips. How about the edging for these blankets, although I love the zigzag edges. Thank you so much.
Love watching your knitting…….is there a special way to deal with all of the loose ends? I assume you weave them in, however as a new knitter I would love to see how you do it. Thank you sharing your beautiful blanket project.
Love this and have started one.. I’m not sure how to add stitches to do a larger square.. eg 61 .. I’ve done 4 of smaller and managed to achieve all the mitres going the same way.
Hello 👋, somehow this technic/project came up, when I had no head for knitting..now I want to make a blanket. Watched a lot of videos and searched online…🤪 Your explanation and demonstration is the winner! Thank you soo much. So the little diamonds are 31 stitches and the big one is 61 stitches. You are using single threat stocking yarn (4ply). How did your blanket turn out? Is it ready? Would you recommend single thread, or would you take it double? The blanket would be heavier, but also warmer.. Thank you so much!!! Kindest regards, Silke from Germany
I love your instructions ❤❤❤❤I do have a question, to avoid the segment lines of different color what’s the best method. ? I mean when you add a new one 🙏❤️
Just love your videos and your teaching style. I have started a blanket but am confused…knitted my 2 initial squares, picked up stitches, knitted 3rd square, then picked up stitches for 4th block. One big square…now what?
So you knitted your third square in between the first two, right? So now you have 3 on your base row? If that's the case, just knit another single one, then add it to the base row by picking up stitches and knitting a diamond in between. Does that make sense?
What is the best start CO and the CO for the side that is after a pick up stitches when at the end of a row? Loved your videos and it is hard to knit WIP here triple digits degrees in Texas!
I have done this style before as a shoulder bag. But I don't remember it being so easy!!! I am going to try this with baby yarn scraps but on the diagonal. Do you have any advise?
The video explained a lot and I managed to join the third diamond to the first two, but how do I join any others? Will I have to keep on making "free" diamonds and then joining them? Sorry, I'm really lost 😢
Can we see how to donthe bigger ones to attach with different size squares. I love the jagged edge instead of straight i keep seeing im playing with it trying to figure it out but could use help
You can absolutely use a circular if that works better for you. I just have dpns that I've used since the beginning for this blanket and I find that works well for me on such a small square.
So I started this making the little ones and hooking them together. But it looks like a helmet for a baby or a nose warmer for an afghan hound. I see on yours you have larger squares in her spursed and I never saw the podcast. I just started making triangles so mine's bad. I need help
Just pick up the twice the number of stitches along two other diamonds. In my case, I'm picking up 30 stitches along two sides of the smaller, existing diamonds, one stitches in the center and then another 30 sts on the other side for a total of 61 sts for the larger square. Does that make sense?
I haven't made one of these blankets yet but I have made a Cosy Memories one with squares all the same size, so same process. For the larger square , I imagine you would just cast on half the number of stitches and then pick up from the side of your smaller right hand diamond ( 2 diamonds laying side by side as she showed), ...then pick up from the edge of the small left diamond, and then cast on the stitches for the larger square. Or maybe start with 2 of the larger diamonds, and pick up half way along the right one ( to the centre point) , and half way along the left one and make a small diamond that way. Would love to know what Jana does, but this is what I would try. Hope it makes sense to you.
Just found you…..most excellent tutorial! Thank you!!!!
I love seeing actual knitting on knitting podcasts❣️. Thank you Jana. I presume the large squares are the same process…just add the stitches.
Yes, exactly
show me how to do half traingles for memory blankets patterns
Thanks for posting this. You knew what we were thinking!

im learning this stitch now as i type. thanks for the clear, comprehensive tutorial.
Your video was excellent. I feel I can do this. I have a lot of left over sock yarn and now have something to do with them. Thank you.
Great idea! Thanks Jana 💕
You’re a great teacher! So easy to follow. Thanks.

Great, simple tutorial! You are very clear and easy to listen to. Thank you for your instructions, I'm about to start my own blanket. xx
Thank you so much for explaining in a friendly manner, beautiful colour combination,God bless you, stay safe n blessed ❤❤u

Thank you so much. Your instructions are very clear.I appreciate the fact that your tutorials are so concise. Keep up the great work ❤
I love your videos! I learn so much! Thank you, Jana, for all you do to teach us new things!
Thank you for a really clear and understandable video. 🇬🇧

I loved this tutorial. I learned so much and thank you for taking the time to demonstrate 😊
best mitered blanket ever❤❤. love it. starting today😊😊 thank you jana😊
Thank you!!!! Started my own blanket, going quite well.🙃🤗🙏
I am working on one but all the same size triangles. Wish I had seen your tutorial first! Not doing those clean edges but over halfway.
Thank you so much, Jana….It’s been my project today. I’m using the Palette Yarn from Knit Picks. I have lots of it, and I think it will work out great! 🤗❤️🙋

what a fun idea! thankyou for the excellent tutorial.
You are so welcome!
Excellent tutorial! Casting on now ,I have lots of scraps! Tfs
Nice video and that’s gonna be a fabulous blanket!
Thanks for this! Now I know what to do with all my bits and bobs! How do you attach the first two diamonds?

Im going to cast one on. I've got lots of scraps
When I go back and reach the middle I purl that stitch I like the look of the ridge better.
Seu vídeo veio recomendado pelo RUclips! 🥰 Parabéns pelo trabalho e obrigada por compartilhar com tanta simpatia e carinho! 😊🇧🇷

Thank you!
That was great - thanks!!
Love this and have started one.. I’m not sure how to add stitches to do a larger square.. eg 61 .. I’ve done 4 of smaller and managed to achieve all the mitres going the same way.
Cast on 61 instead of 31 for a bigger square, and knit 28 instead of 14, do the CDD and then you’ll have 28 more to knit.
I like that you have a couple of different sizes of squares. Any advice on choosing where to put them and how to create them?
I'm just knitting a row of the larger squares after a few smaller rows.
Hello 👋, somehow this technic/project came up, when I had no head for knitting..now I want to make a blanket.

I'm still working on my blanket. I enjoy the single strand of yarn and would not double it, for my purpose.
Thank you, l've just added a new feature with the smaller squares
I love your instructions ❤❤❤❤I do have a question, to avoid the segment lines of different color what’s the best method. ? I mean when you add a new one 🙏❤️
Are you referring to the lines on the back side of the blanket?
@@PurlTogether yes ! But when I change colors mine are in the back and front 😩🙏❤️❤️
@@lidasantander2714 OH! I think you may be picking up the stitches on the wrong side?
@@PurlTogether yes! Need to concentrate 😉🙏❤️❤️❤️
😮 beautiful

I don't think I have any further advice, but feel free to share photos of your project in the Purl Together Facebook and/or Ravelry groups!
With the mix of large and small squares/diamonds, how does the layout work around the edges? Is it all small ones as a "border"?
It looks like 2 small diamonds are on the sides of a large diamond.
The video explained a lot and I managed to join the third diamond to the first two, but how do I join any others? Will I have to keep on making "free" diamonds and then joining them? Sorry, I'm really lost 😢
You'll pick up and knit stitches from the sides of the existing diamonds and then knit the new diamond in the middle. Does that make sense?
Is there a video of knitting half patches, so as to make a straight end between 2 patches?
I haven't made a video like that, but I might in the future!
I am working a metered blanket for the first time. If you used 31 for your small squares are you using 61 for the bigger squares?
Yep, exactly right.
Can we see how to donthe bigger ones to attach with different size squares. I love the jagged edge instead of straight i keep seeing im playing with it trying to figure it out but could use help
I can keep that in mind for a future video!
Thanks!
Just wondering if I missed something...why are we using DPNs?
You can absolutely use a circular if that works better for you. I just have dpns that I've used since the beginning for this blanket and I find that works well for me on such a small square.
Do you end up using a circular needle or knit it all on double pointed needles?
Either! I prefer to use a couple of dpns that are dedicated to this particular project.
So I started this making the little ones and hooking them together. But it looks like a helmet for a baby or a nose warmer for an afghan hound. I see on yours you have larger squares in her spursed and I never saw the podcast. I just started making triangles so mine's bad. I need help
I just knitted some larger diamonds because I liked the effect.
Did you watch the video and read the blog that I linked to in the video description?
Nope. Don't know how
Do you have a video on how to do the large square
I’ll put on my list of videos to make!
Question: how do you add in the larger squares? Thanks
Just pick up the twice the number of stitches along two other diamonds. In my case, I'm picking up 30 stitches along two sides of the smaller, existing diamonds, one stitches in the center and then another 30 sts on the other side for a total of 61 sts for the larger square. Does that make sense?
@@PurlTogetheryes! Thank you..
I dont have enough sock yarn can i use worsted weight wont be pretty as sock yarn
Sure, it'll just be a whole lot larger and heavier.
How do you change colours in the middle of a block?
Those are scraps of self striping sock yarn.
How do you start a big square when all you’ve done so far is little squares?
Thank you!
Can this method be used to make other things?
Yes, you can make slippers, pillow covers, shawls, sweaters, etc. Look at Vivian Hoxbro’s books on mitered square knitting for lots of ideas.
How do you work through the treads
Just weave them in as you normally would.
😘🧶🥰❤️👏👏👏😍👍
